Queen Lila and King Padma of the pavilion story; the goddess Sarasvati who guides Lila; the Brahmin Vasishtha and his wife Arundhati who are the earlier lives of Padma and Lila; King Viduratha, whom Padma's minister becomes in a further life.
Vasishtha tells Rama the story of King Padma and his devoted wife Lila. Fearing her husband's death, Lila performs austerities to Sarasvati and wins a boon that his life-force will never leave their inner chamber, even after death. When Padma dies in battle, Lila hides his corpse among flowers and, guided by Sarasvati, learns to leave her own body at will. Sarasvati shows her that Padma's life, unknown to him, is simultaneously being lived out as a different man, a poor Brahmin named Vasishtha, in a mountain village elsewhere in the same cosmic egg. Lila and Sarasvati travel through the universe to that village, meet the Brahmin's grieving family, and learn that the Brahmin has just died too. They revive him briefly to comfort his household, then follow his subtle self as he is reborn again, this time as the minister's son Viduratha, who nearly dies in turn. Throughout, Sarasvati explains to Lila that these lives, deaths, and the whole visible world are appearances within consciousness, not separate real events. In the end Padma is restored to Lila with full understanding; the couple, now enlightened while still ruling, live out their reign and are ultimately liberated.
एकं तावद्विदेहस्य भर्तुर्जीवो ममाम्बिकेअस्मादेव हि मा यासीन्निजान्तःपुरमण्डपात् || ३९ ||
One boon, mother: let the life of my husband, the king of Videha, not leave this very inner-palace hall of ours.
हे मां, पहला वरदान यह है, मेरे पति, विदेह के राजा, का जीव हमारे इसी अंतःपुर से बाहर न जाए।
श्रीदेव्युवाच । स ते भर्ताद्य संपन्नो द्विजो भूपत्वमागतः । या सावरुन्धती नाम ब्राह्मणी सा त्वमङ्गने || १ ||
The goddess said: The brahmin who is your husband has today become a king. And the brahmin woman named Arundhati - that is you, dear woman.
देवी ने कहा तुम्हारा पति जो ब्राह्मण था वह आज राजा बन गया है। और अरुंधती नाम की जो ब्राह्मणी थी वह तुम ही हो, प्रिय स्त्री।
जीवन्मुक्तास्त इत्येवं राज्यं वर्षायुताष्टकम् | कृत्वा विदेहमुक्तत्वमासेदुः सिद्धसंविदः || १७ ||
Free while still alive, they ruled the kingdom for eighty thousand years like this, and then, their knowledge complete, they reached liberation without a body.
जीते-जी मुक्त रहते हुए, उन्होंने इस तरह अस्सी हज़ार साल तक राज्य किया, और फिर अपना ज्ञान पूरा करके, बिना शरीर के मोक्ष पा लिया।
