3

candrānanāvadātāṅgī śvāsotkampipayodharā | tārakākāradashanā sthitā dyauriva rūpiṇī || 3 ||

English

With a face like the moon, slender limbs, breasts heaving with sighs, and teeth like stars, she stood there, beautiful like the sky.

atha tasyā vayasyekā rājānaṃ taṃ vyajijñapat | bhūtasaṃgrāmasaṃrabdhamamarendramivāpsarāḥ || 4 ||

English

Then one of her friends informed the king, who was engaged in a fierce battle, like an Apsara informing Indra.

deva devī sahāsmābhiḥ palāyyāntaḥpurāntarātśaraṇaṃ devamāyātā vātārteva latā drumam || 5 ||

English

O Lord, the queen along with us is fleeing from the inner palace seeking refuge, like a creeper seeking the support of a tree in a storm.

rājandārā hṛtāstāste balavadbhirudāyudhaiḥ | ūrmijālairmahābdhīnāṃ tīradrumalatā iva || 6 ||

English

O King, those beloved ones were taken away by the powerful enemies with weapons, like the shore trees and creepers by the waves of the great oceans.

antaḥpurādhipāḥ sarve piṣṭāḥ śatrubhiruddhataiḥ | aśaṅkitābhipatitairvātairiva varadrumnāḥ || 7 ||

English

All the protectors of the inner apartments were crushed by the arrogant enemies, who attacked unexpectedly like strong winds striking the best trees.

dūreṇāśaṅkamāyātaiḥ parairnaḥ puramāhṛtam | rātrau varṣāsvivoddhōṣaiḥ kamalānīva vāribhiḥ || 8 ||

English

Our city was taken by the distant enemies who came without fear, like lotuses by water during the rainy season at night.

dhūmaṃ varṣadbhirunnādairlelihānograhetibhiḥ | vahnibhirnaḥ puraṃ prāptaṃ parayodhaiśca bhūribhiḥ || 9 ||

English

Our city was reached by the smoke, loud noises, and fierce weapons of the numerous enemy warriors, who were like raining clouds.

parivārairvilāsinyo devy āhṛtya mūrdhajaiḥ | ākrandantyo balānnītāḥ kurarya iva dhīvaraiḥ || 10 ||

English

O goddess, the playful women with their attendants were forcibly taken away, crying out, with their hair pulled, like cranes by fishermen.

prabuddhalīlovāca kimidaṃ devi he brūhi kasmādiyamahaṃ sthitā | yā sā'bhavaṃ ahaṃ pūrvaṃ kathaṃ seyamahaṃ sthitā || 11 ||

English

The awakened playful one said, 'What is this, O goddess, tell me, why am I in this state? Who was I before? How did I become this?'

ityākarṇyāvalokyāsau devyau yuddhāya yāmyataḥ | kṣamyatāṃ mama bhāryeyaṃ yuṣmatpādābjaṣaṭpadī || 12 ||

English

Hearing this and looking at those two goddesses, he said, 'Forgive me, my wife, who is at your lotus feet,' and then he went to the battlefield.

ityuktvā niryayau rājā kopāruṇitalocanaḥ | mattebhanirbhinnavanaḥ kandarādiva kesarī || 13 ||

English

Having said this, the king, with eyes red with anger, went out like a lion from a cave with a forest broken by a maddened elephant.

līlā līlāṃ dadarśātha svākārasadṛśākṛtim | pratibimbamivāyātāmādarśe cārudarśanām || 14 ||

English

Then Lila saw another Lila, who had a form similar to her own, like a reflection in a mirror, beautiful to behold.

mantrīprabhṛtayaḥ paurā yodhāḥ sabalavāhanāḥ | sarva eva ta eveme sthitāstatra tathaiva te || 16 ||

English

The ministers, the citizens, the warriors with their forces and vehicles, all of them were there, standing just like that.

tatrapīha ca he devi sarve kathamavasthitāḥ | bahirantaśca mukure ivaita kiṃ pracetanāḥ || 17 ||

English

O Goddess, how are all these people standing here and there, inside and outside, like images in a mirror? Are they conscious beings?

śrīdevyuvāca | yathā jñaptirudetyantastathānubhavati kṣaṇāt | citiścetyārthatāmeti cittaṃ cittārthatāmiva || 18 ||

English

Shri Devi said: As the thought arises within, so one experiences it instantly. Consciousness attains the state of the object of consciousness, just as the mind attains the state of the object of the mind.

yādṛgarthaṃ jagadrūpaṃ tatraivodeti tatkṣaṇāt | na deśakāladīrghatvaṃ na vaicitryaṃ padārthajam || 19 ||

English

Whatever form the world takes, it arises there instantly. There is no extension in space and time, nor any variety arising from objects.

bāhyamābhyantaraṃ bhāti svapnārtho'tra nidarśanam | yadantaḥ svapnasankalpapuraṃ ca kacanaṃ citeḥ || 20 ||

English

The external appears as internal, as exemplified by a dream. Whatever is imagined in a dream, that dream city is a mere creation of consciousness.

tadetadbāhyanāmnaiva svabhyāsātsatsphuṭaṃ sthitam | yādṛgbhavo mṛto bhartā tava tasmiṃstadā pure || 21 ||

English

That which is called external is clearly established through one's own practice. Whatever state your husband was in when he died in that city at that time.

tādṛgbhavastamevārthaṃ tatraiva samupāgataḥ | anya eva hyamī bhūtāstebhyaḥtāstādṛśā api || 22 ||

English

That very state has approached that very object there. Others are indeed these beings, similar to those.

sadrūpā eva caitasya svapnasankalpasainyavat | avisaṃvādi sarvārtharūpaṃ yadanubhūyate || 23 ||

English

Just as in a dream, the imagined army appears real and consistent with all its aspects, so too does this world appear real and consistent with all its aspects.

tasya tāvadvada kathaṃ kīdṛśī vāpi satyatā | athavottarakāle tu bhaṅguratvādavastu tat || 24 ||

English

How can we speak of the reality of this world? If it is real, then why does it perish in the end? Therefore, it is unreal due to its transient nature.

īdṛkca sarvamevedaṃ tatra kā nāstitādhikā | svapne jāgradasadrūpā svapno jāgratyasanmayaḥ || 25 ||

English

Everything in this world is like this. There is no greater unreality than this. In a dream, the waking state appears unreal, and in the waking state, the dream appears unreal.

mṛtirjanmanyasadrūpā mṛtyāṃ janmāpyasanmayam | viśaredviśarārutvādanubhūteśca rāghava || 26 ||

English

Death appears unreal in birth, and birth appears unreal in death. This should be understood due to the transient nature of experience, O Raghava.

evaṃ na sannāsadidaṃ bhrāntimātraṃ vibhāsate | mahākalpāntasaṃpattāvapyadyātha yuge'nagha || 27 ||

English

Thus, this world is neither real nor unreal; it is merely an illusion. Even at the end of the great cycle, it appears as it does now, O sinless one.

na kadācana yannāsti tadbrahmaivāsti tajjagat | tasminmadhye kacantīmā bhrāntayaḥ sṛṣṭināmikāḥ || 28 ||

English

That which does not exist is indeed Brahman, and that is the world. In the midst of it, these illusions called creation arise.

vyomni keśoṇḍrakānīva na kacantīva vastutaḥ | yathā taraṅgā jaladhau tathemaḥ sṛṣṭayaḥ pare || 29 ||

English

Just as hair and dust particles do not actually exist in the sky, similarly, these creations are like waves in the ocean.

utpattyoutpattya līyante rajāṃsīva mahānile | tasmādbhrāntimayābhāse mithyātvamahamātmani || 30 ||

English

Just as dust particles disappear in the great wind, similarly, these illusory appearances dissolve in the ultimate reality.

mṛgatṛṣṇājalacaye kaivāsthā sargabhasmani | bhrāntayaśca na tatrānyāstāstadeva paraṃ padam || 31 ||

English

Just as there is no reality in the mirage water, similarly, there is no reality in the creation that is destroyed. Those illusions are not different from the ultimate reality.

ghane tamasi yakṣābhāstama eva na yakṣakaḥ | tasmājjjanmamṛtirmoho vyāmohatvamidaṃ tatam || 32 ||

English

Just as the illusion of a demon in the dark is the darkness itself, not a real demon, similarly, birth, death, and delusion are all part of the ultimate reality.

sarvaṃ tatsamahākalpaṃ śāntau yadavaśiṣyate | nātaḥ satyamidaṃ dṛśyaṃ na cāsatyam kadācana || 33 ||

English

All that remains in the state of peace is the great cycle | This visible world is neither true nor false at any time || 33 ||

dvayamevaitadathavā brahma tatraiva saṃbhavāt | ākāśe paramāṇvantardravyāderaṇuke'pi ca || 34 ||

English

This is indeed duality, or Brahman, because it arises there | In the space, in the subtle particles of matter, and even in the atoms || 34 ||

jīvāṇuryatra tatredaṃ jagadvetti nijaṃ vapuḥ | agnirauṣṇyaṃ yathā vetti nijabhāvakramoditam || 35 ||

English

Wherever the individual soul is, there it knows this world as its own body | Just as fire knows its own heat, as per its natural order || 35 ||

paśyatīdaṃ tathaivātmā svātmabhūtaṃ viśuddhacit | yathā sūryodaye gehe bhramanti trasareṇavaḥ || 36 ||

English

The self sees this world as its own pure consciousness | Just as dust particles float in the air when the sun rises in a house || 36 ||

tatheme paramākāśe brahmāṇḍatrasareṇavaḥ | yathā vāyau sthitaḥ spanda āmodaḥ śūnyamambare || 37 ||

English

Similarly, in the supreme space, these are the dust particles of the universe | Just as the vibration of fragrance is present in the air || 37 ||

piṇḍagrahavinirmuktaṃ tathā viśvaṃ sthitaṃ pare | bhāvābhāvagrahotsargasthūlasūkṣmacarācarāḥ || 38 ||

English

The universe, free from the grasp of the physical body, is situated in the Supreme. The gross and subtle, moving and non-moving, are released from the grasp of existence and non-existence.

vivarjitasya avayavairbhāgā brahmaṇa īdṛśāḥ | sākārasya avabodhāya vijñeyā bhavatādhunā || 39 ||

English

The parts of Brahman, devoid of components, should be known by you now for the realization of the embodied.

ananyāḥ svātmanastasya tenānavayavā iva | yathāsthitamidaṃ viśvaṃ nijabhāvakramoditam || 40 ||

English

These are not different from their own self, hence they are as if without parts. This universe is as it is, manifested in the sequence of its own nature.

riktaṃ na viśvaśabdārthairananyadbrahmaṇi sthitam | na tatsatyaṃ na cāsatyam rajjusarpabhramo yathā || 41 ||

English

It is not empty, not filled with the meanings of the world's words, not different from Brahman. It is neither true nor false, like the illusion of a snake in a rope.

mithyānubhūtitastasatyamasatyaṃ satparīkṣitam | paramaṃ kāraṇaṃ cittvājjīvatvamiti cetyalam || 42 ||

English

From false perception, truth is considered false, and falsehood is considered true upon examination. The supreme cause is consciousness, and thus, it is called life.

tatastathaivānubhavājjīvatvaṃ vindati sphuṭam | satyaṃ bhavatvasatyaṃ vā khe vibhātamidaṃ jagat || 43 ||

English

Thus, through such experiences, one clearly realizes the nature of life. Whether this world appears as real or unreal, it shines in the sky.

rañjayatyeva jīvāṇuḥ svecchābhiranubhūtibhiḥ | anubhūyantu evāśu kāścitpūrvānubhūtitḥ || 44 ||

English

The living being is indeed delighted by experiences according to his own desires. Some experiences are quickly realized from previous experiences.

sarvagātmāsvarūpāyāḥ pratibhāyā iti sthitiḥ | yathā rājātmani vyomni pratibhodeti sanmayī || 48 ||

English

The nature of the all-pervading self is such that it manifests as intuition. Just as the sky, which is the self of the king, manifests as pure intuition.

Whatever form it takes, it manifests there accordingly, continuously. The intuition within the individual space creates itself. It is also reflected externally in the mirror of consciousness.
