श्रीराम उवाच । एवं संकथयन्तीषु तासु तस्मिन्गृहोदरे । विदूरथः किमकरोन्निर्गत्य कुपितो गृहात् ॥ १ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ saṃkathayantīṣu tāsu tasmingṛhodare | vidūrathaḥ kimakaronnirgatya kupito gṛhāt || 1 ||
Sri Rama said: While the women were talking like this inside the house, what did Vidüratha do after he went out of the house in anger?
श्री राम ने कहा: जब घर के अंदर स्त्रियाँ इस तरह बातें कर रही थीं, तब विदूरथ ने घर से गुस्से में निकलकर क्या किया?
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । विदूरथः स्वसदनान्निर्गतः परिवारितः । परिवारेण महता ऋक्षौघेणेव चन्द्रमाः ॥ २ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | vidūrathaḥ svasadanānnirgataḥ parivāritaḥ | parivāreṇa mahatā ṛkṣaugheṇeva candramāḥ || 2 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Vidüratha went out of his own house surrounded by a large group of followers, like the moon surrounded by a great mass of stars.
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: विदूरथ अपने घर से एक बड़े समूह से घिरा हुआ निकला, जैसे चाँद तारों की बड़ी भीड़ से घिरा रहता है।
सन्नद्धसर्वावयवो लग्नहारविभूषणः । महाजयजयारावैः सुरेन्द्र इव निर्गतः ॥ ३ ॥
sannaddhasarvāvayavo lagna hāravibhūṣaṇaḥ | mahājayajayārāvaiḥ surendra iva nirgataḥ || 3 ||
With all his limbs armored, wearing a well-fitted necklace, he went out amid great shouts of victory, victory, like the king of the gods.

The chariot was shaped like a peak, decorated with pearls and rubies, covered with five flags, excellent like a divine chariot of the sky.
वह रथ किसी चोटी जैसा बना था, मोतियों और माणिक से सजा था, उस पर पाँच झंडे लगे थे, और वह आकाश के किसी दिव्य विमान जैसा उत्तम था।

Golden spikes, threaded through the rims of its wheels, shone bright; its beautiful, strong chariot-pole rang with a net of pearls.

The chariot was drawn by horses with fine necks, marked with good signs, excellent, restless, and lean; with the speed of their flight they seemed to be carrying gods.
रथ को सुंदर गर्दन वाले, अच्छे लक्षणों वाले, बढ़िया, चंचल और दुबले घोड़े खींच रहे थे; वे इतनी तेज़ी से उड़ते हुए चलते थे मानो देवताओं को ले जा रहे हों।
वायुं जवेन सहसा असहद्भिर्गतिक्रमैः । प्रोह्यद्भिरिव पश्चार्धमापिबद्भिरिवाम्बरम् ॥ ८ ॥
vāyuṃ javena sahasā asahadbhirgatikramaiḥ | prohyadbhiriva paścārdhamāpibadbhirivāmbaram || 8 ||
With their pace they suddenly outran the wind's speed; it seemed as if they threw their hindquarters back and drank up the sky ahead.
वे अपनी चाल से अचानक हवा की गति को भी पीछे छोड़ देते थे; ऐसा लगता था मानो वे अपने पिछले हिस्से को पीछे फेंक रहे हों और आगे के आकाश को पी रहे हों।
योजितैरिव संपूर्णैश्चन्द्रैश्चामरदीप्तिभिः । अश्वैरष्टभिराबद्धमाशापूरकहेषितैः ॥ ९ ॥

The horses seemed yoked with full moons, gleaming like the shine of chowries; eight horses were harnessed together, their neighing filling every direction.

Then arose the sound of the war-drum, heavy like the loud roar of elephants and clouds, terrible with its echo off the mountain walls.
तभी युद्ध के नगाड़े की आवाज़ उठी, जो हाथियों और बादलों की तेज़ गर्जन जैसी भारी थी, और पहाड़ों की दीवारों से टकराकर गूँजने से भयानक हो गई थी।

हवा उन्मत्त सैनिकों की उठती हुई शोरगुल भरी आवाज़ों से भर गई, साथ ही छोटी-छोटी घंटियों के जाल की झनकार और हथियारों की टक्कर की आवाज़ों से भी।
धनुश्चटचटाशब्दैः शरसीत्कारगायनैः । परस्पराङ्गनिष्पिष्टकवचौघझणज्झणैः ॥ १२ ॥
dhanuścaṭacaṭāśabdaiḥ śarasītkāragāyanaiḥ | parasparāṅganiṣpiṣṭakavacaughajañjhaṇaiḥ || 12 ||
There was the crackling sound of bows, the hissing song of arrows, and the jingling-jangling of armor rubbing and crushing against bodies on both sides.
धनुषों की कड़कड़ाहट थी, बाणों की सीटी जैसी आवाज़ थी, और दोनों तरफ के योद्धाओं के शरीरों से रगड़कर बजते कवचों की झनझनाहट थी।

There was the crackling of blazing fire, the cries of painful wailing, warriors calling out to each other, and the agitated weeping of the heralds.
जलती हुई आग की चट-चट थी, दुख भरी चीख-पुकार थी, योद्धा एक-दूसरे को ललकार रहे थे, और भाटों की घबराई हुई रुदन ध्वनि भी थी।
शिलाघनीकृताशेषब्रह्माण्डकुहरो ध्वनिः । हस्तग्राह्योऽभवद्भीमो दशाशाकुञ्जपूरकः ॥ १४ ॥
śilāghanīkṛtāśeṣabrahmāṇḍakuharo dhvaniḥ | hastagrāhyo'bhavadbhīmo daśāśākuñjapūrakaḥ || 14 ||
The sound became so thick it seemed one could grasp it with the hand; it turned the whole hollow of the universe as solid as rock, terrible, filling the groves of all ten directions.
वह आवाज़ इतनी घनी हो गई कि लगता था हाथ से पकड़ ली जाए; उसने पूरे ब्रह्मांड के खोखलेपन को पत्थर जैसा ठोस बना दिया, और वह भयानक ध्वनि दसों दिशाओं के जंगलों तक भर गई।
अथोदपतदादित्यपथपीवररोधकम् । रजोनिभेन भूपीठमम्बरोड्डयनोन्मुखम् ॥ १५ ॥
athodapatadādityapathapīvararodhakam | rajonibhena bhūpīṭhamambaroḍḍayanonmukham || 15 ||
Then dust rose, thickly blocking the sun's path, as if the very surface of the earth were eager to fly up into the sky.
तभी धूल उठी, जिसने सूरज के रास्ते को घना करके रोक दिया, मानो धरती की सतह ही आकाश में उड़ने के लिए बेचैन हो उठी हो।
गर्भवासमिवापन्नं तेनासीत्तन्महापुरम् । मूढत्वं यौवनेनेव घनतामाययौ तमः ॥ १६ ॥
garbhavāsamivāpannaṃ tenāsīttanmahāpuram | mūḍhatvaṃ yauvaneneva ghanatāmāyayau tamaḥ || 16 ||
With that dust the great city became as if wrapped inside a womb; the darkness grew as dense as foolishness grows dense through youth.
उस धूल से वह बड़ा नगर मानो किसी गर्भ के अंदर समा गया हो; अंधेरा उतना ही घना हो गया जितना जवानी से मूर्खता घनी हो जाती है।
प्रययुः क्वापि दीपौघा दिवसेनेव तारकाः । आययुर्बलमालोला नैशभूतपरम्पराः ॥ १७ ॥
prayayuḥ kvāpi dīpaughā divaseneva tārakāḥ | āyayurbalamālolā naiśabhūtaparamparāḥ || 17 ||
The rows of lamps went off somewhere, like stars vanishing with the day; restless swarms of night-spirits came out in force.
दीयों की कतारें कहीं गायब हो गईं, जैसे दिन के आने पर तारे गायब हो जाते हैं; रात में घूमने वाले भूतों के झुंड बेचैन होकर बड़ी संख्या में निकल आए।
ददृशुस्तन्महायुद्धं द्वे लीले सा कुमारिका । प्रस्फुटद्धृदयेनेव देवीदत्तमहादृशौ ॥ १८ ॥
dadṛśustanmahāyuddhaṃ dve līle sā kumārikā | prasphuṭadhṛdayeneva devīdattamahādṛśau || 18 ||
The two Lilas, that maiden, watched that great battle with hearts as if bursting, through the great eyes given to them by the goddess.
वे दोनों लीलाएँ, वह कन्या, उस बड़े युद्ध को देख रही थीं, मानो उनका हृदय फटा जा रहा हो, देवी के दिए हुए उन बड़ी आँखों से।
प्रशेमुरथ हेतीषु प्रोद्यत्कटकटारवाः । एकार्णवपयःपूरैर्वालवा इव वह्नयः ॥ १९ ॥
praśemuratha hetīṣu prodyatkataṭakāṭārāḥ | ekārṇavapayaḥpūrairvālavā iva vahnayaḥ || 19 ||
Then the weapons, which had been making a rising crackling sound, grew still, like the submarine fire being quenched by the flood of waters of a single ocean.
फिर वे हथियार, जो पहले कड़कड़ाहट की आवाज़ करते हुए उठे थे, शांत हो गए, जैसे समुद्र के तल की आग एक ही सागर के जल-प्रवाह से बुझ जाती है।
शनैः सेनां समाकर्षन्नाज्ञायत बलान्तरम् । विवेशपक्षप्रोड्डीनो मेरुरेकमिवार्णवम् ॥ २० ॥
śanaiḥ senāṃ samākarṣannājñāyata balāntaram | viveśapakṣaproḍḍīno merurekamivārṇavam || 20 ||
Slowly gathering the army together, no one could tell the difference in strength; he went in like Mount Meru, flown up on wings, plunging into a single ocean.
धीरे-धीरे सेना को इकट्ठा करते हुए, यह पता नहीं चल पा रहा था कि ताकत में कौन आगे है; वह ऐसे अंदर घुसा जैसे पंखों पर उड़ा हुआ मेरु पर्वत किसी एक सागर में जा घुसे।
अथोदभूद्गुणध्वानं चटच्चटदिति स्फुटम् । रचितांशुमयाम्भोदाश्चेरुः परपरम्पराः ॥ २१ ॥
athodabhūdguṇadhvānaṃ caṭaccaṭaditi sphuṭam | racitāṃśumayāmbhodāśceruḥ paraparamparāḥ || 21 ||
Then the clear twang of bowstrings arose, going crack-crack; the enemy's ranks moved about, having formed clouds made of shining arrows.
फिर धनुषों की डोरी की साफ टंकार उठी, जो कड़क-कड़क करती थी; शत्रु की पंक्तियाँ चमकते बाणों के बादल बनाकर इधर-उधर घूम रही थीं।
ययुरम्बरमाश्रित्य नानाहेतिविहंगमाः । प्रसस्रुरलमात्तासुमलिनाः शस्त्रदीप्तयः ॥ २२ ॥
yayurambaramāśritya nānāhetivihangamāḥ | prasasruralamāttāsumalināḥ śastradīptayaḥ || 22 ||
Various weapons went flying up into the sky like birds; the gleams of the weapons, darkened after taking enough lives, streamed out.
तरह-तरह के हथियार पक्षियों की तरह आकाश में उड़ चले; बहुत सारी जानें लेने के बाद कालिख पड़े हुए हथियारों की चमक चारों ओर बिखर गई।
जज्वलुः शस्त्रसंघट्टज्वलना उल्मुकाग्निवत् । जगर्जुः शरधारौघान्वर्षन्तो वीरवारिदाः ॥ २३ ॥
jajvaluḥ śastrasaṃghaṭṭajvalanā ulmukāgnivat | jagarjuḥ śaradhāraughānvṛṣanto vīravāridāḥ || 23 ||
Fires blazed up from the clash of weapons, like the fire of a firebrand; the heroes roared like rain clouds, pouring down floods of arrow-showers.
हथियारों की टक्कर से आग की लपटें उठीं, जैसे जलती हुई लकड़ी की आग हो; वीर बादलों की तरह गरजे और बाणों की धाराओं की बाढ़ बरसाने लगे।
विविशुः क्रकचक्रूरा वीराङ्गेषु च हेतयः । पेतुः पटपटारावं हेतिनिष्पिष्टयोऽम्बरे ॥ २४ ॥
vivviśuḥ krakacakrūrā vīrāṅgeṣu ca hetayaḥ | petuḥ paṭapaṭārāvaṃ hetiniṣpiṣṭayo'mbare || 24 ||
Weapons cruel as saws pierced into the bodies of the heroes; the fragments crushed by the weapons fell through the sky with a crackling sound.
आरी जैसे क्रूर हथियार वीरों के शरीर में घुस गए; हथियारों से कुचले हुए टुकड़े आकाश में चट-चट की आवाज़ के साथ गिरने लगे।
जग्मुः शमं तमांस्याशु शस्त्रकानलदीपकैः । बभूवुरखिला सेना नवनाराचरोमशाः ॥ २५ ॥
jagmuḥ śamaṃ tamāṃsyāśu śastrakānaladīpakaiḥ | babhūvurakhilā senā navanārācaromaśāḥ || 25 ||
The darkness was quickly swept away by the flashes of fire from clashing weapons. The whole army became bristling all over with fresh iron arrows, like hair standing on end.
हथियारों की टक्कर से निकलती चिंगारियों की आग ने अंधेरे को झट से मिटा दिया। पूरी सेना नए लोहे के तीरों से यूं भर गई कि जैसे रोंगटे खड़े हो गए हों।
उत्तस्थुर्यमयात्रायां कबन्धनटपङ्क्तयः । जगुरुच्चै रणोद्रेकं पिशाच्यो रणदारिकाः ॥ २६ ॥
uttasthuryamayātrāyāṃ kabandhanaṭapaṅktayaḥ | jagurucchai raṇodrekaṃ piśācyo raṇadārikāḥ || 26 ||
Rows of headless trunks rose and danced as if marching toward Yama's realm. She-demons, girls of the battlefield, sang loudly of the fury of the war.
सिर कटे धड़ों की कतारें यूं उठ खड़ी हुईं मानो यमराज के पास जाने के लिए नाच रही हों। पिशाचिनें, यानी युद्धभूमि की लड़कियां, ऊंची आवाज़ में युद्ध के जोश के गीत गाने लगीं।
उदगुर्दन्तसंघट्टटंकारा दन्तिनां बलात् । ऊहुः क्षपणपाषाणमहानद्यो नभस्तले ॥ २७ ॥
udagurdantasaṃghaṭṭaṭaṅkārā dantināṃ balāt | ūhuḥ kṣapaṇapāṣāṇamahānadyo nabhastale || 27 ||
The elephants' tusks clashed and clattered loudly with great force. Great rivers of hurled stones streamed across the sky.
हाथियों के दांत जोर से टकराकर जोर-जोर से बजने लगे। फेंके गए पत्थरों की बड़ी-बड़ी नदियां आसमान में बह चलीं।
पेतुः शवा निवातास्तसंशुष्कवनपर्णवत् । निर्ययुर्लोहिता नद्यो रणाद्रेर्मृतिवर्षिणः ॥ २८ ॥
petuḥ śavā nivātāstasaṃśuṣkavanaparṇavat | niryayurlōhitā nadyo raṇādrermṛtivarṣiṇaḥ || 28 ||
Corpses fell like dry leaves dropping from trees in still, windless air. Rivers of blood flowed out from the mountain of battle, raining down death.
लाशें यूं गिरने लगीं जैसे बिना हवा के शांत मौसम में सूखे पेड़ों से पत्ते गिरते हैं। युद्ध रूपी पहाड़ से खून की नदियां बह निकलीं, जो मौत की बरसात कर रही थीं।
प्रशेमुः पांसवो रक्तैस्तमांस्यायुधवह्निभिः । युद्धैकध्यानतः शब्दा भयानि मृतिनिश्चयैः ॥ २९ ॥
praśemuḥ pāṃsavo raktaistamāṃsyāyudhavahniḥ | yuddhaikadhyānataḥ śabdā bhayāni mṛtiniścayaiḥ || 29 ||
The dust settled, soaked with blood. The darkness was driven off by the fire flashing from weapons. All other sound died away because everyone was absorbed only in the fight. Fear itself was stilled, since death seemed certain.
धूल खून से भीगकर बैठ गई। अंधेरा हथियारों से निकलती आग से दूर हो गया। बाकी सारी आवाज़ें इसलिए शांत हो गईं क्योंकि सब सिर्फ लड़ाई में डूबे हुए थे। डर भी इसलिए शांत हो गया क्योंकि मौत तय-सी लग रही थी।
अभवत्केवलं युद्धमपशब्दमसंभ्रमम् । अनाकुलाम्बुवाहाभं खड्गवीचिसटांकृतम् ॥ ३० ॥
abhavatkevalaṃ yuddhamapaśabdamasaṃbharam | anākulāmbuvāhābhaṃ khaḍgavīcisaṭāṃkṛtam || 30 ||
The battle became pure battle alone, with no other noise, no confusion, like an undisturbed mass of clouds, its waves made of swords flashing like manes.
युद्ध अब केवल युद्ध ही रह गया, न कोई और आवाज़, न कोई घबराहट। यह ठीक वैसा लग रहा था जैसे बिना हलचल के बादलों का समूह हो, जिसकी लहरें तलवारों की चमकती लटों से बनी हों।
खदखदरवसंवहच्छरोघं टकटकितारवसंपतद्भुशुण्डि झणझणरवसंमिलन्महास्त्रं तिमितिमिवद्रणमास दुस्तरं तत् ॥ ३१ ॥
khadakhadaravasaṃvahaccharoghaṃ ṭakaṭakitāravasaṃpatadbhushuṇḍi jhaṇajhaṇaravasaṃmilanmahāstraṃ timitimivadraṇamāsa dustaraṃ tat || 31 ||
That battle, filled with the clattering sound of streaming floods of arrows, the clanking noise of falling bhushundi weapons, and the clanging roar of gathering great weapons, became as impossible to cross as an ocean holding the timitimi, the giant sea creature that swallows whales.
वह युद्ध, जिसमें बहते हुए तीरों के रेले की खड़खड़ाहट थी, गिरते हुए भुशुण्डि हथियारों की टकटक आवाज़ थी, और इकट्ठा होते बड़े-बड़े अस्त्रों की झनझनाहट थी, उतना ही पार करना मुश्किल हो गया जितना उस समुद्र को पार करना जिसमें व्हेल को निगलने वाला विशाल जीव तिमितिमि रहता हो।
