śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaevamatyākule yuddhe sāsphoṭabhayasaṃkuleāditye tamasā vṛddhe caṭatkaṭhinakaṅkaṭe || 1 ||

English

Śrīvasiṣṭha said, 'In the battle that was extremely chaotic, filled with the fear of loud noises, the sun was obscured by darkness, and there was a clattering sound of clashing weapons.'

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा, 'युद्ध अत्यंत अस्त-व्यस्त था, जो ऊंची आवाजों के भय से भरा हुआ था, सूर्य अंधेरे से ढका हुआ था, और हथियारों के टकराने की आवाज थी।'

Mutually, the tips of the arrows are burning, and the sparks are flying far away, seeking refuge in the rivers.

English

The ocean, filled with streams of weapons whose lotus-like tops were cut off and whirled in eddies, was filled with groups of arrows like the Ganges' currents.

जिस समुद्र में कमल-समान शीर्ष कटे हुए अस्त्रों के भँवर बह रहे थे, वह समुद्र बाणों के समूहों से भरा हुआ था, मानो गंगा की धाराएँ बह रही हों।

English

The wind blows with the sound of arrows and weapons, dense and heavy, ending doubts and causing trembling in the monkeys.

English

The warrior, with his sweet and powerful demeanor, went forth like a hero, his body adorned with the wounds of weapons.

English

The army, with tired horses and broken weapons, lost their vigor and retreated with the setting sun.

अथसेनाधिनाथाभ्यां विचार्य सहमन्त्रिभिः । दूताः परस्परं वृत्ता युद्धं संह्रियतामिति || ८ ||

athasenādhināthābhyāṃ vicārya sahamantribhiḥ | dūtāḥ parasparaṃ vṛttā yuddhaṃ saṃhriyatāmiti || 8 ||

English

Then, the commanders of the army, along with their ministers, decided to send messengers to each other to stop the war.

There, due to fatigue and the diminished vigor of weapons and machines, the battle was stopped by all at the right time.

Then, a single warrior, steady like a pole, stood on the battlefield adorned with the high banners of great chariots.

soṃ'śukaṃ bhrāmayāmāsa sarvadiṅmaṇḍale sitam | śyāmeva dīrghaśuddhāṃśuṃ yuddhaṃ saṃhriyatāmiti | || 11 ||

English

He swiftly moved the white umbrella in all directions. The dark, long, and pure rays (of the umbrella) indicated the cessation of the battle.

उसने तुरंत ही सफेद छत्र को सभी दिशाओं में घुमाया। छत्र की श्याम, लंबी और शुद्ध किरणें युद्ध के समापन की सूचना दे रही थीं।

English

Then the drums resounded, echoing in all directions. They sounded like the whirlpools at the great dissolution.

English

The streams of arrows and other weapons, spread out in the sky, began to flow easily like rivers flowing into a lake.

योधदोर्द्रुमसंचारस्तनुतामाययौ शनैः । भूकम्पान्ते वनस्पन्द इवाभ्रान्त इवार्णवः ॥ || १४ ||

yodhadordrumasaṃcārastanutāmāyayau śanaiḥ | bhūkampānte vanaspanda ivābhrānta ivārṇavaḥ | || 14 ||

English

The movement of the warriors' arms resembled the swaying of trees, gradually becoming thin. It was like the trembling of the forest at the end of an earthquake, or the confused ocean.

योद्धाओं के हाथों की गति पेड़ों के हिलने जैसी थी, धीरे-धीरे पतली होती गई। यह भूकंप के अंत में जंगल के कंपन की तरह था, या भ्रमित समुद्र की तरह।

English

Then the two armies began to emerge from the battlefield, like the waters of the deluge spreading in all four directions.

English

The army, agitated like the ocean of milk churned by Mount Mandara, gradually calmed down and reached a state of equilibrium.

Gradually, within a moment, the terrifying battlefield with its fearsome depths became empty, like the ocean drunk by Agastya.
