13.52.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | etasminnantare rāma līlovāca sarasvatīm | śvāsāvaśeṣamālokya mūḍhaṃ bhartāramagragam || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Meanwhile, Rama, Lila spoke to Saraswati. She looked at her husband lying in front of her, unconscious, with only his breath left.

pravṛtto dehamutsraṣṭuṃ madbhartāyamihāmbike | jñaptiruvāca | evaṃrūpamahārambhe saṃgrāme rāṣṭrasaṃbhame || 2 ||

Lila said: This husband of mine, mother, is about to leave his body here. Jnapti said: In such a great undertaking as this, in the war, amid the turmoil of the kingdom,

saṃpanne'pi sthite'pyuccairvicitrārambhamanthare | na kiṃcidapi saṃpannaṃ rāṣṭraṃ na ca mahītalam || 3 ||

even though it looked grand, even though it stood tall, slow with its strange and wonderful beginning - nothing at all was actually achieved, not the kingdom and not the earth.

tasya tanmaṇḍapasyāntaḥ śavasya nikatāmbare | idaṃ bhūrāṣṭramābhāti bhartṛjīvasya te'naghe || 4 ||

Inside that very pavilion, in the space close to the corpse, this whole kingdom of the earth appears - it is the life of your husband, faultless one.

antaḥpuragṛhānte tadidaṃ rāṣṭrānvitodaram || 5 ||

At the far end of the inner palace chamber, this same kingdom lies inside it.

63.52.6

vasiṣṭhavipragehe'ntarvindhyādrigrāmake sthitam | vasiṣṭhavipragehentaḥ śavagehajagatsthitam || 6 ||

It is placed inside the house of the Brahmin Vasishtha, in a little village in the Vindhya mountains. And inside that house of the Brahmin Vasishtha is placed the world of the corpse's house.

śavagehajagatkukṣāvidam gehajagatsthitam | evameṣa mahārambho jagattrayamayo bhramaḥ || 7 ||

Inside the belly of that world of the corpse's house, this world of the house sits. So this whole great undertaking is a delusion made up of the three worlds.

tvayā mayā'nayā'nena saṃyuktaḥ sārṇavāvaniḥ | girigrāmakadehāntarmadhye gaganakośake || 8 ||

By you, by me, by her, by him, the earth with its oceans is joined together - inside a body, amid mountains and villages, within a hollow of the sky.

svātmaiva kacati vyartho na kacatyeva vā kvacit | tatpadaṃ paramaṃ viddhi nāśotpādavivarjitam || 9 ||

One's own self alone shines - uselessly, or it does not shine anywhere at all. Know that highest state to be free from being destroyed and free from being created.

svayaṃ kacitamābhātaṃ śāntaṃ paramanāmayam | kila maṇḍapagehentaḥ svasvabhāvoditātmani || 10 ||

It shines by itself, appearing, peaceful, free from all disease, supreme - this indeed happens inside the pavilion-house, in the self that has risen out of its own nature.

evamārambhaghanayorapi maṇḍapayostayoḥ | udare śūnyamākāśamevāsti na jagadbhramaḥ || 11 ||

So even in those two pavilions, thick with activity, inside them there is only empty space - there is no delusion of a world.

bhramadraṣṭurabhāve hi kīdṛśī bhramatā bhrame | nāstyeva bhramasattāto yadasti tadajaṃ padam || 12 ||

Indeed, when there is no one to see the delusion, what kind of being deluded can there be in the delusion? Delusion has no reality at all - whatever exists is that unborn state.

bhramo dṛśyamasattasya draṣṭṛdṛśyadaśā kutaḥ | draṣṭṛdṛśyakramābhāvādadvayaṃ sahajaṃ hi tat || 13 ||

Delusion is the seen thing belonging to someone unreal - so how can there be a state of a seer and a seen? Since there is no sequence of seer and seen, that is indeed non-dual and natural.

tatpadaṃ paramaṃ viddhi nāśotpādavivarjitam | svayaṃ kacitamābhātaṃ śāntamādyamanāmayam || 14 ||

Know that highest state to be free from being destroyed and free from being created - it shines by itself, appearing, peaceful, the very first, free from all disease.

kila maṇḍapagehāntaḥ svasvabhāvoditātmani | viharanti janāstatra svagehe svavyavasthayā || 15 ||

Indeed, inside the pavilion-house, in the self that has risen out of its own nature, people move about there, each in their own house, following their own way of living.

na jagattatra no sargaḥ kaścidapyanubhūyate | tenāhamajamākāśaṃ jagadityeva vartate || 16 ||

There, no world and no creation is felt at all. So this unborn space alone - which is the self - exists as what is called the world.

sarvaṃ śūnyātmavijñānaṃ mervādigirijālakam | nedaṃ kuḍyamayaṃ kiṃcidyathā svapne mahāpuram || 17 ||

All this - the network of mountains starting with Meru - is knowledge whose nature is empty. It is not made of walls at all, just as a great city seen in a dream is not real.

deśe prādeśamātre'pi girijālamayānyapi | vajrasārāṇi khānyeva lakṣāṇi jagato viduḥ || 18 ||

In a place as small as just a hand's width, there are networks made of mountains, as hard as diamond - yet know that these are just empty space, hundreds of thousands of such worlds.

jaganti subahūnyeva saṃbhavantyaṇuke'pi ca | kadalīpallavānīva saṃniveśena bhūriśaḥ || 19 ||

Very many worlds indeed come into being even inside a single atom, packed close together in great numbers, like the leaves of a banana plant.

trijagaccidaṇāvantarasti svapnapuraṃ yathā | tasyāpyantaścidāṇavasteṣvapyekaikaśo jagat || 20 ||

The three worlds exist inside an atom of consciousness, like a city seen in a dream. Inside that atom too there are atoms of consciousness, and inside each of those, one by one, a whole world.

teṣāṃ yasmiñjagatyeṣa padmo rājā śavaḥ sthitaḥlīlā tava sapatnīyaṃ prāptā pūrvatarā śubhe || 21 ||

Among all those worlds, auspicious one, in the very world where this Padma lies dead as a king, there is a Lila who is your co-wife - the one who existed before you.

yadaiva mūrcchāmāyātā līleyaṃ puratastavatadaiva bhartuḥ padmasya śavasya nikaṭe sthitā || 22 ||

The very moment this Lila fainted in front of you, at that very moment she was standing close to the corpse of her husband Padma.

līlovācakathameṣā purā devi saṃpannā tatra dehinīkathaṃ ca tatsapatnīkabhāvamāptavatī sthitā || 23 ||

Lila said: Goddess, how did she come to be there before, in a body? And how did she come to be his co-wife?

te cāsyā vada kiṃ rūpaṃ paśyantyatha vadanti kimtadgehavaravāstavyāḥ samāseneti me vada || 24 ||

And tell me, what form do people see her in, and what do they say about her - those who live as the finest people in that house? Tell me this in brief.

śrīdevyuvācaśrṛṇu sarvaṃ samāsena yathāpṛṣṭaṃ vadāmi telīle līlāsvavṛttāntamantadaṃ dṛśyadurdaśam || 25 ||

The Goddess said: Listen, Lila, I will tell you everything in short, just as you asked — the whole account of the two Lilas, which brings this delusion to an end, though it is hard to truly see.

padmastava sa bhartaiṣa bhrāntiṃ tāvattatāmimāmiyaṃ jaganmayī tasminneva sadmani paśyati || 26 ||

This Padma, your husband, has been living inside this same delusion, spread just this far. And she, this Lila who fills the whole world, watches it all from within that same house.

bhrāntiyuddhamidaṃ yuddhameṣā bhrāntirjano'janaḥbhrāntyaivāstīha maraṇameṣa caivaṃ bhramātmakaḥ || 27 ||

This war too is only a war of delusion. This person here is delusion itself — one who seems to be a person is really no one. Death here exists only because of delusion, and this whole world is likewise made only of delusion.

bhramakrameṇānenaiva līlāsya dayitā sthitātvaṃ caiṣā ca varārohe svapnamātraṃ varāṅgane || 28 ||

Through this same process of delusion, Lila became his beloved wife. You and she, beautiful one, are nothing but a dream, lovely lady.

yathā bhavatyāvetasya svapnamātraṃ varāṅganetathā bhavatyorbhartaiṣa tathaivāhamapi svayam || 29 ||

Just as both of you are only a dream to him, lovely lady, in that same way this husband of yours is also only a dream — and I myself am too.

jagacchobhaivedṛśīyaṃ dṛśyametadihocyateetadeva parijñātaṃ dṛśyaśabdārthamujptati || 30 ||

This beauty of the world is exactly like this — this is what is called "the seen" here. When this is truly understood, then the very meaning of the word "seen" falls away.

evameṣā tvameṣā ca saṃpannaivamasau nṛpaḥahaṃ cātmani satyatvaṃ gatā sarvatayātmanaḥ || 31 ||

In this same way she came into being, you came into being, and that king came into being. And I too have found my own truth within the Self, since I am entirely made of the Self.

ime vayamihānyonyaṃ saṃpannāścoditā itiitthaṃ sarvātmakatayā mahāciddhanasaṃsthiteḥ || 32 ||

Thinking, "We have all come into being here for one another, set in motion this way" — this happens because that great mass of consciousness is present as everything.

evameṣā sthitā rājñī hārihāsavilāsinīlīlā vilolavadanā navayauvanaśālinī || 33 ||

So this queen Lila remains — charming, with a lovely smile, her face full of life, glowing with fresh youth.

peśalācāramadhurā madhurodārabhāṣiṇīkokilāsvarasaṃkāśā madamanmathamantharā || 34 ||

She is sweet in her gentle manners, speaks sweet and generous words, her voice is like a cuckoo's, and she moves slowly, full of love's intoxication.

asitotpalapatrākṣī vṛttapīnapayodharākāntā kāñcanagaurāṅgī pakvabimbaphalādharā || 35 ||

Her eyes are like petals of a dark blue lotus, her breasts round and full. She is lovely, her body golden and fair, her lower lip like a ripe red bimba fruit.

tvatsaṃkalpātmakasyaiṣā yadā bharturmanaḥkalātadā tvatsadṛśākārā sthitaiṣā ciccamatkṛtau || 36 ||

When she became a part of the mind of that husband — who himself is made only of your own imagining — she then took a form just like yours, within this wonder-play of consciousness.

tvadbharturmaraṇe kṣipraṃ samanantarameva hitvadbhartraiṣā puro dṛṣṭā tvatsaṃkalpātmanāmunā || 37 ||

The very moment your husband died, right after that, she appeared before your husband — that husband who himself is made only of your imagining.

yadādhibhautikaṃ bhāvaṃ ceto'nubhavati svayamcetyaṃ sanmayamevāta ātivāhikakalpanam || 38 ||

When the mind itself experiences something as a physical, material thing, then whatever it perceives feels completely real to it — but this is really just an imagining made by the subtle traveling mind.

yadādhibhautikaṃ bhāvaṃ ceto vetti na sanmayamātivāhikasaṃkalpastadā satyopajāyate || 39 ||

But when the mind understands that a physical thing is not truly solid and real, then this same imagining of the subtle mind is known correctly, as it truly is.

atho maraṇasaṃvittyā punarjanmamaye bhrametvaṃ hi saṃviditānena tvayā ca gata eva saḥ || 40 ||

Then, in this delusion made of rebirth, through the knowledge of death, you were known by him — and, by you, he too had simply passed away.

itthaṃ tvāṃ dṛṣṭavāneṣa dṛṣṭaścaiva tvayeti catvamapyātmani saṃpannā sarvagatvāccidātmanaḥ || 41 ||

So he saw you, and you in turn were seen by him — and you too came into being within the Self, because consciousness, which is the Self, is present everywhere.

brahma sarvagataṃ yasmādyathā yatra yadoditambhavatyāśu tathā tatra svapnaśaktyaiva paśyati || 42 ||

Because Brahman is present everywhere, whatever arises — however it arises, wherever it arises — quickly becomes so there. One sees it only through this same power that makes a dream.

sarvatra sarvaśaktitvādyatra yā śaktirunnayetāste tatra tathā bhāti tīvrasaṃvegahetutaḥ || 43 ||

Since consciousness holds every power everywhere, wherever a particular power stirs something up, it stands right there and appears just as strongly, because of the force of that intense urge.

mṛtimohakṣaṇenaiva yadaitau daṃpatī sthitautadaivābhyāmidaṃ buddhaṃ pratibhāsavaśādhṛdi || 44 ||

In that very moment of confusion at death, when the two of them became a married couple, right then, through the power of that appearance, this was understood by both of them in their hearts:

āvayoḥ pitarāvetāvime vai cāpi mātaraudeśa eṣa dhanaṃ cedaṃ karmedaṃ pūrvamīdṛśam || 45 ||

"These are our two fathers, and these are our two mothers. This is our homeland, and this is our wealth, and these were our past deeds, just like this."

āvāṃ vivāhitāvevamevaṃ nāmaikatāṃ gatauetayoḥ sāpi janatā yātā tatraiva satyatām || 46 ||

"We two were married in this way, and so we became united as one. And even the people around these two of us became just as real, right there."

tathaivātrāsti dṛṣṭāntaḥ pratyakṣaṃ svapnavedanamityevaṃbhāvayā līle līlayāhamathārcitā || 47 ||

There is exactly this same example here: a dream felt as direct, real experience. Understanding it this way, Lila, that other Lila then worshipped me, through her devotion.

nāhaṃ syāṃ vidhavetyevaṃ varo datto mayāpyasauityarthena mṛtā pūrvameveha khalu bālikā || 48 ||

"May I never become a widow" — this was the boon I granted her too, for this very reason. And it is for this very reason that the girl had actually died earlier, right here.

bhavatāṃ cetanāṃśānāmahaṃ cetanadharmiṇīkuladevī sadā pūjyā svata eva karomyaham || 49 ||

I am the family goddess, made of pure awareness, for all of you who are portions of that same awareness — always to be worshipped. I act entirely on my own, without being asked.

athāsyā jīvako dehātprāṇamārutarūpadhṛkmanasā calatāṃ prāpto mukhāgratyaktadehakaḥ || 50 ||

Then her life-breath left the body. Taking the form of the vital air, moving along together with the mind, it left the body through the tip of her mouth.

tato maraṇamūrcchānte gṛhe'sminneva caitayābuddhau bhāvita ākāśe dṛṣṭo jīvātmanā tataḥ || 51 ||

Then, when the swoon of death was over, right there in that same house, it took shape in the mind through awareness, and the soul then saw it in the sky.

She now appeared as a woman with the eyes of a deer, her face beautiful as the moon's own disc, swollen with the pride of love, graceful toward her beloved, longing to embrace her lover. Her face was eager with a fresh memory, and she was joined with him — within the moon's circle, or at the end of a dream — with a splendor not of this world, as if a padmini woman, the finest kind of woman, had been called into being.
