13.53.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha labdhvarā dehenānenaiva mahīpatim | patimāptuṃ prayātyeṣā nabhomārgeṇa viṣṭapam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Now, having received this boon, she sets out by the path of the sky toward heaven, so she can reach the king, her husband, with this same body.

iti saṃcintya sānandamuddāmamakaradhvajā | pupaluve pelavākārā pakṣiṇīva nabhastale || 2 ||

Thinking this, full of joy and overflowing with love, she flew up into the sky, her body delicate, like a bird.

kumārīṃ tatra sā prāpa jñaptyaiva prahitāṃ hitām | svasaṃkalpamahādarśātpurato nirgatāmiva || 3 ||

There she came upon a young girl - a helpful one sent by pure awareness itself - as if the girl had stepped right out in front of her from the great mirror of her own intention.

kumāryuvāca | duhitāsmi sakhi jñapteḥ svāgataṃ te'stu sundari | pratīkṣamāṇā tvāmeva sthitāsmīha nabhaḥpathi || 4 ||

The girl said: Friend, I am the daughter of Awareness. Welcome to you, beautiful one. I have been standing right here on the sky-path, waiting just for you.

līlovāca | devi bhartuḥ samīpaṃ māṃ naya nīrajalocane | mahatāṃ darśanaṃ yasmānna kadācana niṣphalam || 5 ||

Lila said: Goddess, lotus-eyed one, take me close to my husband. For meeting great ones is never without fruit.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ehi tatraiva gacchāv ityuktvā sā kumārikā | purastasyāḥ sthitā vyomni mārgadarśanatatparā || 6 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Saying, "Come, let us go there," that young girl stood in front of her in the sky, ready to show the way.

tatastadanuyātā sā prāpa koṭaramambaram | nirmalaṃ karamālāgraṃ yathā lakṣaṇalekhikā || 7 ||

Then, following her, she reached the clear hollow of the sky - like a palm-reader's finger gliding to the tip of the string of beads held in her hand.

meghamārgamathollaṅghya vātaskandhāntare gatā | sūryamārgādabhigatā tārāmārgamatītya ca || 8 ||

Then, crossing over the path of the clouds, she went into the middle region of the wind; she went past the path of the sun, and crossed the path of the stars too.

vāyvindrasurasiddhānāṃ lokānullaṅghya lāghavāt | brahmaviṣṇumahēśānāṃ prāpa brahmāṇḍakharparam || 9 ||

Crossing, with ease, the worlds of Vayu, Indra, the gods and the Siddhas, and the worlds of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, she reached the outer shell of the cosmic egg.

himaśaityaṃ yathāntasthaṃ kumbhe'bhinne bahirbhavettathā saṃkalpasiddhā sā brahmāṇḍānnirgatā bahiḥ || 10 ||

As the cold that was inside ice comes out when the pot is broken, so she, made powerful by her own will, went out of the cosmic egg, to the outside.

svacittamātradehaiṣā svasaṃkalpasvabhāvajam | antarevānubhavati kilaivaṃ nāma vibhramam || 11 ||

Her body is only her own mind. She experiences this so-called wandering entirely within herself, and it is born from the nature of her own will.

brahmādistānamākramya prāpya brahmāṇḍakharparam | tato brahmāṇḍapārasthā jalādyāvaraṇāni ca || 12 ||

Passing over the abode of Brahma and reaching the outer shell of the cosmic egg, then, standing beyond the cosmic egg, she crossed the coverings of water and the rest.

samullaṅghya puraḥ prāpa mahācidgaganāntaram | adṛṣṭapāraparyantamativegena dhāvatā | sarvato garuḍenāpi kalpakoṭiśatairapi || 13 ||

Crossing over, she reached ahead into the vast space of great Consciousness, whose far end no one has seen - a space whose end even Garuda, flying with all his speed in every direction for hundreds of crores of ages, could not reach.

tatra brahmāṇḍalakṣāṇi santyasaṃkhyāni bhūriśaḥ | tānyanyonyamadṛṣṭāni phalānīva mahāvane || 14 ||

There are countless hundreds of thousands of cosmic eggs, in very great numbers; they are unseen by one another, like fruits in a great forest.

tatraikasminpuraḥsaṃsthe vitatāvaraṇānvite | vedhayitvā viveśāntarbadaṃ kṛmiko yathā || 15 ||

There, piercing into one of them that stood in front, spread over with coverings, she entered inside it - the way a small worm enters into a jujube fruit.

punarbrahmendraviṣṇvādilokānullaṅghya bhāsvarān | tanmahīmaṇḍalaṃ śrīmatprāpa tārāpathādadhaḥ || 16 ||

Again crossing over the shining worlds of Brahma, Indra, Vishnu and the rest, she reached that glorious circle of the earth, below the path of the stars.

tatra tanmaṇḍalaṃ prāpya tatpuraṃ tacca maṇḍapam | praviśya puṣpaguptasya śavasya nikate sthitā || 17 ||

There, reaching that region, that city, and that pavilion, and entering it, she stood close to the corpse of Pushpagupta.

etasminnantare sā ca na dadarśa kumārikām | māyāmiva parijñātā kvāpi yātāṃ varānanā || 18 ||

Meanwhile, she did not see the young girl anywhere - the fair-faced one, who was known to be like an illusion, had gone off somewhere.

mukhamālokya sā tasya svabhartuḥ śavarūpiṇaḥ | idaṃ buddhvatī satyaṃ pratibhāvaśataḥ svataḥ || 19 ||

Looking at the face of her own husband, now in the form of a corpse, she understood by her own sudden insight, on her own, that this was real.

ayaṃ sa bhartā saṃgrāme nihato mama sindhunā | vīralokānimānprāpya kṣaṇaṃ śete yathāsukham || 20 ||

This is that husband of mine, killed in battle by Sindhu. Having reached these worlds of heroes, he lies here resting for a moment, comfortably.

ahaṃ devyāḥ prasādena saśarīraivamīdṛśam | iha prāptavatī dhanyā matsamā nāsti kācana || 21 ||

By the grace of the Goddess, I have reached such a place with this very body. I am fortunate; there is no one equal to me.

iti saṃcintya sā haste gṛhītvā cāru cāmaram | vījayāmāsa candreṇa dyīrivāvanimaṇḍalam || 22 ||

Thinking this, she took a beautiful fly-whisk in her hand and fanned him - the way the sky fans the circle of the earth with the moon.

prabuddhalīlovāca | te bhṛtyāstāśca vai dāsyaḥ sa rājā ca prabuddhavān | vakṣyanti vadatāṃ devi kiṃ kayāiva kathaṃ dhiyā || 23 ||

Prabuddha-Lila said: Those servants, those maidservants, and that king - once they wake up, goddess, what will they say, speaking, and with what kind of mind?

Sri Devi said: That king, and those servants of yours - all of them will see each other, because they enter into the oneness of the space of consciousness, and by the power of the two of us -

mahācitpratibhāsatvānmahāniyatinisścayāt | anyonyamevapaśyanti mithaḥ saṃpratibimbitāt || 25 ||

Because each of them is only an appearance of the great consciousness, and because the fixed law of destiny has settled it so, they see one another only as reflections of each other.

iyam me sahajā bhāryā mameyam sahajā sakhī | mameyam sahajā rājñī bhṛtyoyam sahajo mama || 26 ||

This is my wife, born together with me. This is my friend, born together with me. This is my queen, born together with me. This is my servant, born together with me.

kevalam tvamaham sā ca yathāvṛttamakhṇḍitam | jñāsyāma idamāścaryam natu kaścidapītaraḥ || 27 ||

Only you and I — exactly as it happened, leaving nothing out — we alone will know this wonder; no one else at all will know it.

prabuddhalīlovāca amuneva śarīreṇa kimartham na gatā patim | eṣā vareṇa samprāptā līlā lalitavādinī || 28 ||

The awakened Lila said: Why did she not go to her husband with this very body? This Lila, the sweet-spoken one, reached him through a boon.

śrīdevyuvāca aprabuddhadhiyaḥ siddhalokānpuṇyavaśoditān | na samarthāḥ svadehena prāptum chāyā ivātapān || 29 ||

The goddess said: Those whose minds are not awakened cannot reach, with their own body, the worlds of the perfected ones that rise up through the power of merit — just as shade cannot reach into sunlight.

ādisarge ca niyatiḥ sthāpite ti prabodhibhiḥ | yathā satyamalīkena na milatyeva kiñcana || 30 ||

And at the very start of creation the awakened ones fixed this rule: that truth never mixes with falsehood, not even a little.

yāvadvetālasaṃkalpo bālasya kila vidyate | nirvetāladhiyastāvadudayastasya kaḥ katham || 31 ||

As long as a child's belief in a ghost exists, how and in what way can a mind free of that ghost ever arise in him?

avivekajvaroṣṇatvaṃ vidyate yāvadātmani | tāvadvivekaśītāṃśuśaityaṃ kuta udetyalam || 32 ||

As long as the heat of the fever of confused thinking exists in a person, how can the coolness of the moon of clear understanding ever arise?

ahaṃ pṛthvyādidehaḥ khe gatirnāsti mamottamā | itiniścayavānyo'ntaḥ kathaṃ syātsonanyaniścayaḥ || 33 ||

One who is inwardly convinced, 'I am a body made of earth and the other elements; I have no power to move through the sky' — how can that same person hold any other conviction?

ato jñānavivekena puṇyenātha vareṇa ca | puṇyadehena gacchanti paraṃ lokamanena tu || 34 ||

Therefore, through knowledge and clear understanding, and through merit or through a boon, with a body made of merit, by that means they go to the higher world.

śuṣkaparṇaṃ kilāṅgāre etadevāśu dahyate | ayaṃ dehamahaṃdehaḥ prāpta eva viśīryate || 35 ||

A dry leaf, once it touches a burning coal, is burned up at once. In the same way, this body-based notion 'I am the body,' as soon as it is taken hold of, falls apart just as fast.

etāvadeva bhavati varaśāpavijṛmbhitaiḥ | yathā saṃcintya evāhaṃ tathā smṛta iti smṛtiḥ || 36 ||

This much only happens through the working of a boon or a curse: as I think of myself, so I am remembered — that is what memory is.

yaḥ sarpa-pratyayo rajjvāṃ sa kathaṃ sarpa-kārya-kṛt | ātmani eva hi yo nāsti tasya kā kārya-kāritā || 37 ||

The notion of a snake seen in a rope — how can that produce the action of a real snake? That which does not even exist in itself — what power to act can it have?

yastvetanmṛta ityeva mithyā samanubhūyate | prāgabhyāsasya puṣṭasya nāmaitatpravijṛmbhate || 38 ||

But the false experience of 'this one is dead' is nothing but the unfolding of an old habit that has grown strong.

svānubhūte jagajjāle sugamā saṃsmṛtibhramāḥ | nānyasaṃkalpito nāma sargādyabhyāsa īdṛśaḥ || 39 ||

In the web of the world that one experiences for oneself, illusions of memory arise easily. Such a habit, present from the time of creation onward, is not made up by anyone else — it is one's own.

antaranubhūyamānāḥ saṃsṛtayo bāhyabhūtajālānām | aviditavedyadṛśāmapi dūre puṃsāmivaaindavaṃ bimbaṃ || 40 ||

The comings and goings of the world of beings outside, though experienced within, are — even for those who do not clearly know what is to be known — like the moon's reflection, which looks far away to people.
