श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाचाथ प्रोड्डयनोद्युक्ततुरङ्गमतरङ्गकःउत्ताण्डव इवोन्मत्तो बभूव स रणार्णवः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaatha proḍḍayanodyuktaturaṅgamataraṅgakaḥuttāṇḍava ivonmatto babhūva sa raṇārṇavaḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Then that ocean of war grew wild, like a frenzied dance, with its horses straining to leap forward as its waves.

वशिष्ठ जी बोले: फिर वह युद्ध का सागर पागल हो गया, जैसे किसी उन्मत्त नृत्य जैसा। उसके घोड़े आगे कूदने को बेचैन थे, और वही उसकी लहरें थीं।

छत्रडिण्डीरविश्रान्तसितेषुशफरोत्करःअश्वसैन्योल्लसल्लोलकल्लोलाकुलकोटरः ॥ २ ॥

chatraḍiṇḍīraviśrāntasiteṣuśapharotkaraḥaśvasainyollasallolakallolākulakoṭaraḥ || 2 ||

Its umbrellas were like foam at rest, its white arrows were a great shoal of fish, and its hollows were filled with the restless, glittering waves made by the horse troops.

उसके छत्र मानो ठहरी हुई झाग थे, उसके सफेद तीर मानो मछलियों का बड़ा झुंड थे, और उसके गड्ढे घोड़ों की सेना की चमकती, बेचैन लहरों से भरे हुए थे।

nānāyudhanadīnītasainyāvartavivṛttimānmattahastighaṭāpīṭhacalācalakulācalaḥ || 3 ||

Rivers carrying many kinds of weapons flowed into it, whirlpools of troops turned within it, and the mass of maddened elephants was its base — it was a great mountain that moved and yet stood still.

तरह-तरह के हथियार बहाती नदियाँ उसमें आकर मिलती थीं, सेनाओं के भंवर उसमें घूमते थे, और मतवाले हाथियों का समूह उसका आधार था — वह एक ऐसा बड़ा पहाड़ था जो चलता भी था और अडिग भी रहता था।

कचच्चक्रशतावर्तवृत्तिभ्रान्तशिरस्तृणःधूलीजलधरापीतभ्रमत्खड्गप्रभाजलः ॥ ४ ॥

kacaccakraśatāvartavṛttibhrāntaśirastṛṇaḥdhūlījaladharāpītabhramatkhaḍgaprabhājalaḥ || 4 ||

Heads with hair whirling around, spun by hundreds of circling whirlpools, floated on it like straw, and its water was the flashing gleam of swords, swallowed up by clouds of dust.

बिखरे बालों वाले सिर, सैकड़ों घूमते भंवरों में घूमते हुए, उस पर तिनकों की तरह तैरते थे। और उसका पानी तलवारों की चमकती रोशनी थी, जिसे धूल के बादल निगल जाते थे।

मकरव्यूहविस्तारभग्नाभग्नभटौघनौमहागुडुगुडावर्तप्रतिश्रुद्धनकन्दरः ॥ ५ ॥

makaravyūhavistārabhagnābhagnabhaṭaughanaumahāguḍuguḍāvartapratiśruddhanakandaraḥ || 5 ||

The vast array of crocodile-shaped ranks, warriors broken and unbroken, were its ships, and its caverns echoed with the great gurgling of its whirlpools.

मगरमच्छ जैसी सेना-पंक्तियों का बड़ा फैलाव, टूटे और बिना टूटे योद्धा, उसकी नावें थे, और उसकी गुफाएँ उसके भंवरों की तेज़ गड़गड़ाहट से गूँजती थीं।

मीनव्यूहविनिष्क्रान्तशरबीजौघसर्षपःहेतिवीचीवरालूनपताकावीचिमण्डलः ॥ ६ ॥

mīnavyūhaviniṣkrāntaśarabījaughasarṣapaḥhetivīcīvarālūnapatākāvīcimaṇḍalaḥ || 6 ||

Arrows darting out of its fish-shaped ranks scattered like mustard seeds, and its ring of waves was made of banners cut down by the waves of weapons.

मछली जैसी सेना-पंक्तियों से निकलते तीर सरसों के दानों की तरह बिखर जाते थे, और उसकी लहरों का घेरा उन झंडों से बना था जिन्हें हथियारों की लहरों ने काट गिराया था।

शस्त्रवारिकृताम्भोदसदृशावर्तकुण्डलःसंरम्भघनसंचारसेनातिमितिमिङ्गिलः ॥ ७ ॥

śastravārikṛtāmbhodasadṛśāvartakuṇḍalaḥsaṃrambhaghanasaṃcārasenātimitimiṅgilaḥ || 7 ||

Made of a flood of weapons, its whirling rings looked like storm clouds, and its army, moving in dense fury, was like the great sea-monster that swallows even whales.

हथियारों की बाढ़ से बने उसके घूमते घेरे बादलों जैसे लगते थे, और घने क्रोध में चलती उसकी सेना उस विशाल समुद्री जीव जैसी थी जो व्हेल मछली को भी निगल जाता है।

कृष्णायसपरीधानवलत्सेनाम्बुभीषणःकबन्धावर्तलेखान्तर्बद्धसैन्यादिभूषणः ॥ ८ ॥

kṛṣṇāyasaparīdhānavalatsenāmbubhīṣaṇaḥkabandhāvartalekhāntarbaddhasainyādibhūṣaṇaḥ || 8 ||

Clad in black iron and surging, its army-water was terrifying, and headless trunks caught within the lines of its whirlpools, together with the troops, were its ornaments.

काले लोहे से ढका और उमड़ता हुआ, उसकी सेना का जल भयानक था, और उसके भंवरों की रेखाओं में फँसे धड़ बिना सिर के, सेना के साथ मिलकर, उसके आभूषण थे।

शरसीकरनीहारसान्धकारककुब्गणःनिर्घोषाशोषिताशेषशब्दैकघनघुङ्घुमः ॥ ९ ॥

śarasīkaranīhārasāndhakārakakubgaṇaḥnirghoṣāśoṣitāśeṣaśabdaikaghanaghuṃghumaḥ || 9 ||

The spray of arrows, like mist and fog, darkened every quarter of the sky, and its single, dense, rumbling roar swallowed up every other sound.

तीरों की फुहार, कोहरे और धुंध की तरह, आकाश की हर दिशा को अंधेरा कर देती थी, और उसकी एक गहरी, गरजती हुई गूँज बाकी हर आवाज़ को निगल जाती थी।

पतनोत्पतनव्यग्रशिरःशकलसीकरःआवर्तचक्रव्यूहेषु प्रभ्रमद्भटकाष्ठकः ॥ १० ॥

patanotpatanavyagraśiraḥśakalasīkaraḥāvartacakravyūheṣu prabhramadbhaṭakāṣṭhakaḥ || 10 ||

Fragments of heads, falling and flying up in confusion, were its spray, and in its whirling circular formations warriors spun about like floating logs.

सिरों के टुकड़े, उलझन में गिरते और उछलते हुए, उसकी फुहार थे, और उसके घूमते हुए गोल व्यूहों में योद्धा तैरते हुए लट्ठों की तरह घूमते थे।

कष्टटाङ्कारकोदण्डकुण्डलोन्मथनोद्भटहशङ्कमेव पातालादिवोद्यत्सैनिकोर्मिमान ॥ ११ ॥

kaṣṭaṭāṅkārakodaṇḍakuṇḍalonmathanodbhaṭaḥaśaṅkameva pātālādivodyatsainikormimān || 11 ||

Fierce with the harsh twang of bows bent into circles, it had waves of soldiers rising up boldly, as though surging from the depths of the netherworld.

गोल मुड़े हुए धनुषों की कठोर टंकार से भयंकर, उसमें सैनिकों की लहरें साहस से उठती थीं, मानो पाताल की गहराई से उमड़ रही हों।

गमागमपरानन्तपताकाच्छत्रप्रेणिलःवहद्रक्तनदीरंहःप्रोह्यमानरथद्रुमः ॥ १२ ॥

gamāgamaparānantapatākācchatraphenilaḥvahadraktanadīraṃhaḥprohyamānarathadrumaḥ || 12 ||

Foamy with endless banners and parasols going back and forth, it swept chariots along like logs in the current of a flowing river of blood.

आगे-पीछे लहराते अनगिनत झंडों और छत्रों से भरा हुआ झागदार सागर, बहते हुए खून की नदी की धार में रथों को लट्ठों की तरह बहा ले जाता था।

गजप्रतिमसंपन्नमहारुधिरबुद्बुदःसैन्यप्रवाहविचलद्धयहस्तिजलेचरः ॥ १३ ॥

gajapratimasaṃpannamahārudhirabudbudaḥsainyapravāhavicaladdhayahastijalecaraḥ || 13 ||

It had bubbles of thick blood as huge as elephants, and in the flood of its army, the moving horses and elephants were its creatures of the deep.

उसमें हाथियों जितने बड़े गाढ़े खून के बुलबुले थे, और उसकी सेना की बाढ़ में चलते घोड़े और हाथी उसके गहरे पानी के जीव थे।

ससंग्रामोऽम्बरग्राम इवाश्चर्यकरो नृणामभूत्प्रलयभूकम्पकम्पिताचलचञ्चलः ॥ १४ ॥

sasaṃgrāmo'mbaragrāma ivāścaryakaro nṛṇāmabhūtpralayabhūkampakampitācalacañcalaḥ || 14 ||

That battle was astonishing to men, like a city seen in the sky, and it made even the mountains tremble, as if shaken by the earthquake of the final dissolution of the world.

वह युद्ध लोगों के लिए आश्चर्यजनक था, जैसे आकाश में दिखने वाला कोई नगर हो, और उसने पहाड़ों को भी हिला दिया, मानो प्रलय के भूकंप से काँप रहे हों।

तरत्तरङ्गविहगः पतत्करिघटातटःत्रस्तभीरुमृगानीकस्कूर्जद्धुरुघुरारवः ॥ १५ ॥

tarattaraṅgavihagaḥ patatkarighaṭātaṭaḥtrastabhīrumṛgānīkaskūrjaddhurughurāravaḥ || 15 ||

Birds skimmed over its rippling waves, its shore was a herd of falling elephants, and its army of frightened, timid, deer-like men made a trembling, growling roar.

इसकी लहरों पर पक्षी तैरते थे, गिरते हुए हाथियों का झुंड इसका किनारा था, और डरे हुए, कायर, हिरन जैसे सैनिकों की सेना काँपती हुई गुर्राहट कर रही थी।

सरच्चरालीशलभशतभङ्गुरसैनिकःतरत्तरङ्गशरभः शरभारवनावनिः ॥ १६ ॥

saraccharālīśalabhaśatabhaṅgurasainikaḥtarattaraṅgaśarabhaḥ śarabhāravanāvaniḥ || 16 ||

By the hundreds, its soldiers broke apart like moths, its waves crossed by the swift shabara beast, whose roar filled the ground.

सैकड़ों की संख्या में उसके सैनिक पतंगों की तरह टूट जाते थे, उसकी लहरों को वह तेज़ शरभ जानवर पार करता था, जिसकी दहाड़ से धरती भर जाती थी।

चलद्द्विरेफनिर्ह्रादो रसत्तूर्यगुहागुरुःचिरात्स सैन्यजलदो लुटद्भटमृगाधिपः ॥ १७ ॥

caladdvirephanirhrādo rasattūryaguhāguruḥcirātsa sainyajalado luṭhadbhaṭamṛgādhipaḥ || 17 ||

For a long time that cloud of an army, humming like moving bees, deep as a cave resounding with war-drums, rolled on, with the lion among warriors in its midst.

बहुत देर तक वह सेना का बादल, उड़ती हुई मधुमक्खियों की तरह गुनगुनाता, युद्ध के नगाड़ों से गूँजती गुफा जैसा गहरा, चलता रहा, और उसमें योद्धाओं का सिंह भी लोट रहा था।

प्रसरद्धूलिजलदो विगलत्सैन्यसानुमान्पतद्रथवराढ्याङ्गः प्रतपत्खङ्गमण्डलः ॥ १८ ॥

prasaraddhūlijalado vigalatsainyasānumānpatadrathavarāḍhyāṅgaḥ pratapatkhaṅgamaṇḍalaḥ || 18 ||

It was a cloud of spreading dust, a mountain whose ridges of troops were crumbling away, its body rich with falling chariots, and a blazing ring of swords.

वह फैलती हुई धूल का बादल था, एक ऐसा पहाड़ जिसकी सेना की चोटियाँ ढहती जा रही थीं, उसका शरीर गिरते हुए रथों से भरा था, और तलवारों का एक जलता हुआ घेरा उसके चारों ओर था।

प्रोत्पतत्पदपुष्पौघः पताकाच्छत्रवारिदःवहद्रक्तनदीपूरपतत्साराववारणः ॥ १९ ॥

protpatatpadapuṣpaughaḥ patākācchatravāridaḥvahadraktanadīpūrapatatsārāvavāraṇaḥ || 19 ||

Severed feet flew up like a shower of flowers, banners and parasols were its rain clouds, and elephants fell, swept away in the flood of the river of blood.

कटे हुए पैर फूलों की बारिश की तरह उछलते थे, झंडे और छत्र उसके बादल थे, और हाथी खून की नदी की बाढ़ में बहते हुए गिर जाते थे।

सोऽभूत्समरकल्पान्तो जगत्कवलनाकुलःपर्यस्तसद्ध्वजच्छत्रपताकारथपत्तनः ॥ २० ॥

so'bhūtsamarakalpānto jagatkavalanākulaḥparyastasadhvajacchatrapatākārathapattanaḥ || 20 ||

That battle became like the end of an age, eager to swallow the whole world — a city of chariots whose fine banners, parasols, and flags all lay overturned.

वह युद्ध प्रलय के अंत जैसा हो गया, जो पूरी दुनिया को निगल जाने पर तुला था — रथों का एक नगर, जिसके सुंदर झंडे, छत्र और पताकाएँ सब उलट गई थीं।

पतद्विमलहेत्यौघभूरिभास्वरभास्करःकठिनप्राणसंतापतापिताखिलमानसः ॥ २१ ॥

patadvimalahetyaughabhūribhāsvarabhāskaraḥkaṭhinaprāṇasaṃtāpatāpitākhilamānasaḥ || 21 ||

The falling mass of bright weapons shone like countless suns, and the harsh agony of dying tormented every mind.

गिरते हुए चमकीले हथियारों का ढेर अनगिनत सूर्यों जैसा चमकता था, और मरने की कठोर पीड़ा हर मन को सता रही थी।

कोदण्डपुष्करावर्तशरधारानिरन्तरःवहत्खंगशिलालेखाविद्युद्वलयिताम्बरः ॥ २२ ॥

kodaṇḍapuṣkarāvartaśaradhārānirantaraḥvahatkhaṃgaśilālekhāvidyudvalayitāmbaraḥ || 22 ||

With bows as its whirlpools, it poured down unceasing streams of arrows, and the flashing lines of sword-blades ringed the sky like lightning.

धनुषों को अपने भंवर बनाकर, वह बिना रुके तीरों की धाराएँ बरसाता था, और तलवारों की चमकती धार की रेखाएँ आकाश को बिजली की तरह घेर लेती थीं।

उच्छिन्नरक्तजलधिपतितेभकुलाचलःनभोविकीर्णनिपतद्युत्तारकणतारकः ॥ २३ ॥

ucchinnaraktajaladhipatitebhakulācalaḥnabhovikīrṇanipatadyuttārakaṇatārakaḥ || 23 ||

Herds of fallen elephants lay like mountains in the overflowing ocean of blood, while bright sparks fell scattered from the sky like stars.

गिरे हुए हाथियों के झुंड खून के उमड़ते सागर में पहाड़ों की तरह पड़े थे, और आकाश से चमकती चिंगारियाँ तारों की तरह बिखरकर गिरती थीं।

चक्रकुल्याम्बुदावर्तपूर्णव्योमशिराम्बुदःअस्त्रकल्पाग्निनिर्दग्धसैन्यलोकान्तरक्रमः ॥ २४ ॥

cakrakulyāmbudāvartapūrṇavyomaśirāmbudaḥastrakalpāgninirdagdhasainyalokāntarakramaḥ || 24 ||

Discuses streamed like channels of cloud, whirling to fill the sky with the heads of warriors, and a fire like the fire of doomsday weapons burned up the army, sending it into another world.

चक्र बादलों की धाराओं की तरह बहते थे, और घूमते हुए आकाश को योद्धाओं के सिरों से भर देते थे, और प्रलय के हथियारों जैसी आग ने सेना को जलाकर दूसरे लोक में भेज दिया।

हेतिवर्षाशनिच्छन्नभूतलामलभूधरःगजराजगिरिव्रातपातपिष्टजनव्रजः ॥ २५ ॥

hetivarṣāśanicchannabhūtalāmalabhūdharaḥgajarājagirivrātapātapiṣṭajanavrajaḥ || 25 ||

The clean mountains of the earth were now covered by a rain of weapons and thunderbolts, and crowds of people were crushed under the falling bodies of great elephants as big as mountains.

धरती के साफ-सुथरे पहाड़ अब हथियारों और बिजली की बौछार से ढक गए थे, और लोगों की भीड़ पहाड़ जैसे बड़े-बड़े हाथियों के गिरने से कुचली जा रही थी।

शरद्धाराघनानीकमेघच्छन्नमहीनभाःमहानीकार्णवक्षोभसंघट्टघटिताद्रवः ॥ २६ ॥

śaradhārāghanānīkameghacchannamahīnabhāḥmahānīkārṇavakṣobhasaṃghaṭṭaghaṭitādravaḥ || 26 ||

The earth and the sky were covered by thick clouds of soldiers, like the dense rain clouds of autumn, and the crash and churn of the huge army, like a stormy ocean, packed the ground hard and solid.

धरती और आकाश सैनिकों के घने बादलों से ढक गए थे, जैसे शरद ऋतु के घने बारिश वाले बादल, और बड़ी सेना का आपस में टकराना और मथना, जैसे तूफानी समुद्र, ज़मीन को कड़ा और सख्त बना रहा था।

व्याप्त उग्रानिलोद्भूतैर्जलव्यालैरिवाचलःअन्योन्यदलनव्यग्रैः शस्त्रोत्पात इवोत्थितैः ॥ २७ ॥

vyāpta ugrānilodbhūtairjalavyālairivācalaḥanyonyadalanavyagraiḥ śastrotpāta ivotthitaiḥ || 27 ||

Like a mountain covered by water snakes stirred up by a fierce wind, it was covered with warriors bent on tearing each other apart, who had risen up like a storm of weapons.

जैसे कोई पहाड़ तेज़ आँधी से उठे हुए जल-सर्पों से ढक जाए, वैसे ही वह एक-दूसरे को फाड़ने पर तुले लड़ाकों से ढका था, जो हथियारों के तूफान की तरह उठ खड़े हुए थे।

शूलासिचक्रशरशक्तिगदाभुशुण्डीप्रासादयो विदलनेन मिथो ध्वनन्तःदीप्ता अधुर्दशदिशः शतशो भ्रमन्तः कल्पान्तवातपरिवृत्तपदार्थलीलाम् ॥ २८ ॥

śūlāsicakraśaraśaktigadābhuśuṇḍīprāsādayo vidalanena mitho dhvanantaḥdīptā adhurdaśadiśaḥ śataśo bhramantaḥ kalpāntavātaparivṛttapadārthalīlām || 28 ||

Spears, swords, discs, arrows, javelins, maces, bhushundi weapons, lances, and other weapons, all blazing, clashed and broke against each other with a loud noise, shaking the ten directions, whirling about by the hundreds, like the play of things blown about by the wind at the end of an age.

भाले, तलवारें, चक्र, बाण, बरछे, गदाएँ, भुशुण्डी और दूसरे हथियार, सब जलते-चमकते हुए, आपस में टकराकर और टूटकर ज़ोर से आवाज़ करते थे, दसों दिशाओं को हिला रहे थे, और सैकड़ों की गिनती में घूम रहे थे, जैसे प्रलय के समय हवा में चीज़ें उड़ती-घूमती हैं।
