श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । प्राप्य राजा पुरः प्राप्तं सिन्धुमुद्धुरकन्धरम् । मध्याह्नतपनान्तेन कोपेन विततोऽभवत् ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | prāpya rājā puraḥ prāptaṃ sindhumuddhurakandharam | madhyāhnatapanāntena kopena vitatobhavat || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: The king came upon Sindhu, who had already arrived in front of the city holding his head high in pride, and the king's anger blazed up as fierce as the heat of the midday sun.

वसिष्ठ जी ने कहा: राजा को सिंधु मिला, जो सिर ऊंचा किए घमंड से पहले ही शहर के सामने आ चुका था, और राजा का गुस्सा दोपहर की तेज धूप जितना भड़क उठा।

धनुरास्फालयामास चिरारावितदिङ्मुखम् । कल्पान्तपवनास्फोट इव मेरुगिरेस्तटम् ॥ २ ॥

dhanaurāsphālayāmāsa cirārāvitadiṅmukham | kalpāntapavanāsphoṭa iva merugirestataṭam || 2 ||

He twanged his bow, and the sound filled every direction for a long time, like the roar of the wind striking the slopes of Mount Meru at the end of the world.

उसने अपना धनुष टंकारा, और उसकी आवाज़ देर तक हर दिशा में गूंजती रही, जैसे प्रलय के समय हवा मेरु पर्वत की ढलानों से टकराकर गरजती है।

विससर्जोर्जितो राजा प्रलयार्कः करानिव । तूणीररजनीबद्धाः शिलीमुखपरम्पराः ॥ ३ ॥

visasarjorjito rājā pralayārkaḥ karāniva | tūṇīrarajanībaddhāḥ śilīmukhaparamparāḥ || 3 ||

The powerful king let loose row after row of arrows that had been held in the darkness of his quiver, the way the sun of the world's end sends out its rays.

बलवान राजा ने अपने तरकश के अंधेरे में रखे बाणों को एक के बाद एक छोड़ना शुरू किया, जैसे प्रलय का सूरज अपनी किरणें फेंकता है।

एक एव विनिर्याति गुणात्तस्य शिलीमुखः । सहस्रं भवति व्योम्नि गच्छन्पतति लक्षशः ॥ ४ ॥

eka eva viniryāti guṇāttasya śilīmukhaḥ | sahasraṃ bhavati vyomni gacchanpatati lakṣaśaḥ || 4 ||

A single arrow leaves the string of his bow, but in the sky it turns into a thousand, and as it travels it comes down in hundreds of thousands.

उसके धनुष की डोरी से एक ही बाण छूटता है, पर आकाश में जाकर वह हज़ार बन जाता है, और गिरते-गिरते लाखों में बदल जाता है।

मुसला नाम ते बाणा मुसलाकृतयोऽम्बरम् । छादयामासुरुन्नादाः कल्पान्ताशनयो यथा ॥ ६ ॥

musalā nāma te bāṇā musalākṛtayo'mbaram | chādayāmāsurunnādāḥ kalpāntāśanayo yathā || 6 ||

Those arrows were called clubs, shaped like clubs, and with their loud roar they covered the sky, like the thunderbolts that fall at the end of the world.

वे बाण मूसल कहलाते थे, मूसल जैसे बने हुए थे, और अपनी तेज गरज से आकाश को ढक देते थे, जैसे प्रलय के समय गिरने वाली बिजलियां।

रेजुः कनकनाराचराजयो व्योम्नि सस्वनाः । रसन्त्यः कल्पवातार्ताः पतन्त्य इव तारकाः ॥ ७ ॥

rejuḥ kanakanārācarājayo vyomni sasvanāḥ | rasantyaḥ kalpavātārtāḥ patanty iva tārakāḥ || 7 ||

Rows of golden iron arrows shone and roared in the sky, crying out as if tormented by the wind of the world's end, falling like stars.

सोने के लोहे के बाणों की पंक्तियां आकाश में चमकती और गरजती थीं, जैसे प्रलय की हवा से पीड़ित होकर चीख रही हों, और तारों की तरह गिर रही हों।

विदूरथाच्छरासारा अजस्रमभिनिर्ययुः । अब्धेरिव पयःपूराः सूर्यादिव मरीचयः ॥ ८ ॥

vidūrathāccharāsārā ajasramabhiniryayuḥ | abdheriva payaḥpūrāḥ sūryādiva marīcayaḥ || 8 ||

From Vidūratha, showers of arrows kept pouring out without stopping, like floods of water from the ocean, like rays of light from the sun.

विदूरथ से बाणों की बौछारें लगातार, बिना रुके निकलती रहीं, जैसे समुद्र से पानी की बाढ़ आती है, जैसे सूरज से किरणें निकलती हैं।

प्रचण्डपवनोद्धूतात्पुष्पाणीव महातरोः । अयःपिण्डादिवोत्तप्तात्ताडितात्कणपङ्कयः ॥ ९ ॥

pracaṇḍapavanoddhūtātpuṣpāṇīva mahātaroḥ | ayaḥpiṇḍādivottaptāttāḍitātkāṇapaṅkayaḥ || 9 ||

They fell like flowers shaken loose from a great tree by a fierce wind, like streams of sparks flying off a hot lump of iron when it is struck.

वे ऐसे गिर रहे थे जैसे तेज़ हवा से किसी बड़े पेड़ के फूल झड़ जाते हैं, जैसे गरम लोहे के टुकड़े पर चोट लगने से चिंगारियों की धाराएं उड़ती हैं।

धारा वर्षमुच इव सीकरा इव निर्झरात् । तत्पुराग्निमहादाहात्स्फुलिङ्गा इव भासुराः ॥ १० ॥

dhārā varṣamuca iva sīkarā iva nirjharāt | tatpurāgnimahādāhātsphuliṅgā iva bhāsurāḥ || 10 ||

They fell like streams from a rain cloud, like fine spray from a waterfall, like the bright sparks from the great blazing fire of that city.

वे ऐसे गिर रहे थे जैसे बादल से बारिश की धाराएं गिरती हैं, जैसे झरने से बूंदें उड़ती हैं, जैसे उस शहर की बड़ी आग की चमकदार चिंगारियां उड़ती हैं।

तयोश्चटचटास्फोटं शृण्वत्कोदण्डयोर्द्वयोः । बलद्वयमभूत्प्रेक्षामूकं शान्त इवाम्बुधिः ॥ ११ ॥

tayoścaṭacaṭāsphoṭaṃ śṛṇvatkodaṇḍayordvayoḥ | baladvayamabhūtprekṣāmūkaṃ śānta ivāmbudhiḥ || 11 ||

Hearing the crackling twang of both bows, the two armies fell silent, just watching, like a calm, still ocean.

दोनों धनुषों की कड़कड़ाती टंकार सुनकर दोनों सेनाएं चुप हो गईं, बस देखती रहीं, जैसे कोई शांत, स्थिर समुद्र हो।

वहन्ति स्म शरापूरा गङ्गापूरा इवाम्बरे । सिन्धोरभिमुखं युद्धे घर्घरारावरंहसः ॥ १२ ॥

vahanti sma śarāpūrā gaṅgāpūrā ivāmbare | sindhorabhimukhaṃ yuddhe ghargharārāvaraṃhasaḥ || 12 ||

In the battle, streams of arrows flowed through the sky toward Sindhu with a gurgling roar and great speed, like floods of the Ganga.

युद्ध में बाणों की धाराएं गंगा की बाढ़ की तरह आकाश में सिंधु की ओर बहती थीं, गड़गड़ाती आवाज़ और तेज़ रफ्तार के साथ।

कचत्कनकनाराचशरवर्षा अनारतम् । वहच्छवशवाशब्द निर्ययुर्धनुरम्बुदात् ॥ १३ ॥

kacatkanakanārācaśaravarṣā anāratam | vahacchavaśavāśabda niryayurdhanurambudāt || 13 ||

Shining showers of golden iron arrows poured out without stopping, and out of the cloud that was his bow, carrying a sound, they came forth.

सोने-लोहे के चमकते बाण लगातार बरसते रहे, और उसके धनुष रूपी बादल से एक आवाज़ के साथ निकलते रहे।

बाणमन्दाकिनीपूरं व्रजन्तं सिन्धुपूरणे । वातायनात्तमालोक्य लीला तत्पुरवासिनी ॥ १४ ॥

bāṇamandākinīpūraṃ vrajantaṃ sindhupūraṇe | vātāyanāttamālokya līlā tatpuravāsinī || 14 ||

Seeing that flood of arrows, like the heavenly Ganga, going out to fill Sindhu, Lila, who lived in that city, watched from her window.

उस बाणों की बाढ़ को, जो स्वर्ग की गंगा जैसी सिंधु की ओर बहकर उसे भरने जा रही थी, देखकर, उस शहर में रहने वाली लीला अपनी खिड़की से देखने लगी।

तेन बाणसमूहेन जयमाशङ्क्य भर्तरि । उवाच वाक्यमानन्दविकसन्मुखपङ्कजा ॥ १५ ॥

tena bāṇasamūhena jayamāśaṅkya bhartari | uvāca vākyamānandavikasanmukhapaṅkajā || 15 ||

Seeing that mass of arrows, and thinking her husband had won, she spoke, her lotus face blooming with joy.

उस बाणों के समूह को देखकर, और यह सोचकर कि उसके पति की जीत हो गई है, उसने बात कही, उसका कमल जैसा चेहरा खुशी से खिल उठा।

जय देवि जयत्येष नाथोऽस्माकं विलोकय । किंचानेन शरौघेण मेरुरप्येति चूर्णताम् ॥ १६ ॥

jaya devi jayaty eṣa nātho'smākaṃ vilokaya | kiṃcānena śaraugheṇa merur apy eti cūrṇatām || 16 ||

Victory, my lady, victory! Our lord is winning, just look! With this flood of arrows even Mount Meru would be ground to powder!

जय हो, देवी, जय हो! हमारे स्वामी की जीत हो रही है, देखो तो! बाणों की इस बाढ़ से तो मेरु पर्वत भी चूर-चूर हो जाएगा!

तस्यामेव वदन्त्या तु घनस्नेहरवाकुलम् । प्रेक्षणव्यग्रयोर्देव्योर्हसन्त्योर्मानुषीं हृदा ॥ १७ ॥

tasyāmeva vadantyā tu ghanasneharavākulam | prekṣaṇavyagrayordevyorhasantyormānuṣīṃ hṛdā || 17 ||

While she was saying just this, filled with deep affection and loud with her words, the two goddesses, intent on watching, laughed inwardly at the human woman.

जब वह यही कह रही थी, गहरे स्नेह और ऊंची आवाज़ से भरी हुई, तब देखने में लगी हुई वे दोनों देवियां मन ही मन उस मनुष्य स्त्री पर हंस रही थीं।

तच्छरार्णवमामत्तमपिबत्सिन्धुवाडवः । शरोष्मणा ह्यगस्त्येन जह्नुर्मन्दाकिनीमिव ॥ १८ ॥

taccharārṇavamāmattamapibatsindhuvāḍavaḥ | śaroṣmaṇā hyagastyena jahnurmandākinīmiva || 18 ||

Sindhu's fire that burns under the sea drank up that raging ocean of arrows through the heat of the arrows themselves, just as Agastya drank the ocean, or as Jahnu drank the Ganga.

सिंधु की समुद्र के नीचे जलने वाली आग ने बाणों की उस उफनती हुई नदी को उन्हीं बाणों की गर्मी से पी लिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे अगस्त्य ने समुद्र को पी लिया था, या जैसे जह्नु ने गंगा को पी लिया था।

बाणवर्षेण कणशस्तं सायकमहाघनम् । छित्त्वा तनुरजः कृत्वा चिक्षेप गगनार्णवे ॥ १९ ॥

bāṇavarṣeṇa kaṇaśastāṃ saṃ sāyakamahāghanam | chittvā tanurajaḥ kṛtvā cikṣepa gaganārṇave || 19 ||

With a rain of his own arrows he cut that great mass of arrows into small fragments, turned it into fine dust, and threw it into the ocean of the sky.

अपने बाणों की बारिश से उसने बाणों के उस बड़े समूह को टुकड़े-टुकड़े काट डाला, उसे बारीक धूल बना दिया, और आकाश रूपी समुद्र में फेंक दिया।

यथा दीपस्य शान्तस्य न परिज्ञायते गतिः । तस्य सायकसङ्घस्य न विज्ञाता तथा गतिः ॥ २० ॥

yathā dīpasya śāntasya na parijñāyate gatiḥ | tasya sāyakasaṅghasya na vijñātā tathā gatiḥ || 20 ||

Just as no one can tell where a lamp goes once it is put out, no one could tell where that mass of arrows had gone.

जैसे बुझे हुए दीये का रास्ता किसी को पता नहीं चलता, वैसे ही उस बाणों के समूह का रास्ता भी किसी को पता नहीं चला।

तं छित्त्वा सायकासारं शरीराम्बुधरं घनम् । व्योम्नि प्रसारयामास रसाच्छवशतान्वितम् ॥ २१ ॥

taṃ chittvā sāyakāsāraṃ śarīrāmbudharaṃ ghanam | vyomni prasārayāmāsa rasācchavaśatānvitam || 21 ||

Cutting down that torrent of arrows, that dense cloud of bodies, he spread it through the sky in his fury, filled with hundreds of corpses.

बाणों की उस धारा को, जो लाशों का घना बादल बन गई थी, काटकर उसने अपने गुस्से में उसे आकाश में फैला दिया, जो सैकड़ों लाशों से भरी हुई थी।

विदूरथस्तमप्याशु व्यधमत्सायकोत्तमैः । सामान्यजलदं मत्तं कल्पान्तपवनो यथा ॥ २२ ॥

vidūrathastamapyāśu vyadhamatsāyakottamaiḥ | sāmānyajaladaṃ mattaṃ kalpāntapavano yathā || 22 ||

Vidūratha quickly blew that away too with his finest arrows, the way the wind at the end of the world scatters an ordinary raging storm cloud.

विदूरथ ने अपने सबसे अच्छे बाणों से उसे भी तुरंत उड़ा दिया, जैसे प्रलय की हवा किसी साधारण गरजते बादल को तितर-बितर कर देती है।

कृतप्रतिकृतैरेवं बाणवर्षैर्महीपती । व्यर्थीकृतैरनयतां प्रहारमविचारणैः ॥ २३ ॥

kṛtapratikṛtairevaṃ bāṇavarṣairmahīpatī | vyarthīkṛtairanayatāṃ prahāramavicāraṇaiḥ || 23 ||

In this way the two kings kept striking each other with showers of arrows, each attack answered and undone by a counter-attack, and they carried on hitting each other without any thought.

इस तरह दोनों राजा एक-दूसरे पर बाणों की बारिश से वार करते रहे, हर वार का जवाब मिलता और वह बेकार हो जाता, और वे बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे एक-दूसरे पर वार करते रहे।

अथादधे मोहनास्त्रं सिन्धुर्गन्धर्वसौहृदात् । प्राप्तं तेन ययुर्लोका विना मोहं विदूरथात् ॥ २४ ॥

athādadhe mohanāstraṃ sindhurgandharvasauhṛdāt | prāptaṃ tena yayurlokā vinā mohaṃ vidūrathāt || 24 ||

Then Sindhu took up the weapon of delusion, which he had gotten through friendship with a Gandharva, and when it struck, all the people fell into a daze, all except Vidūratha.

फिर सिंधु ने मोह का वह अस्त्र उठाया, जो उसे एक गंधर्व की दोस्ती से मिला था, और उसके लगते ही सब लोग बेसुध हो गए, सिवाय विदूरथ के।

व्यस्तशस्त्राम्बरा मूका विषण्णवदनेक्षणाः । मृता इवाभवन्योधाश्चित्रन्यस्ता इवाथवा ॥ २५ ॥

vyastśastrāmbarā mūkā viṣaṇṇavadanekṣaṇāḥ | mṛtā ivābhavanyodhāścitranyastā ivāthavā || 25 ||

The warriors, their weapons and clothes scattered about, fell silent, their faces and eyes dull with dejection; they became as if dead, or as if painted still in a picture.

योद्धा, जिनके हथियार और कपड़े इधर-उधर बिखर गए थे, चुप हो गए, उनके चेहरे और आंखें उदासी से बुझ गईं; वे मानो मर गए हों, या किसी तस्वीर में स्थिर बना दिए गए हों।

यावद्विदूरथादन्यं मोहो नयति मन्दताम् । तावद्विदूरथो राजा प्रबोधास्त्रमथाददे ॥ २६ ॥

yāvadvidūrathādanyaṃ moho nayati mandatām | tāvadvidūratho rājā prabodhāstramathādade || 26 ||

While the weapon of delusion was making everyone else besides Vidūratha dull and senseless, King Vidūratha then took up the weapon of awakening.

जब तक मोह के अस्त्र ने विदूरथ के सिवा सबको मूर्ख और बेसुध बना दिया, तब तक राजा विदूरथ ने जागृति का अस्त्र उठा लिया।

ततः प्रबोधमापन्नाः प्रजाः प्रातरिवाब्जिनी । विदूरथे भवत्सिन्धुः कुद्धोऽर्क इव राक्षसे ॥ २७ ॥

tataḥ prabodhamāpannāḥ prajāḥ prātarivābjinī | vidūrathe bhavatsindhuḥ kuddho'rka iva rākṣase || 27 ||

Then his soldiers woke up, like a bed of lotuses opening at dawn. Sindhu turned on Vidūratha in fury, like the angry sun turning on a demon of the night.

तब उसके सैनिक जाग उठे, जैसे सुबह होते ही कमल का तालाब खिल उठता है। सिन्धु क्रोध में विदूरथ पर टूट पड़ा, जैसे क्रोधित सूर्य रात के राक्षस पर टूटता है।

नागास्त्रमाददे भीमं पाशबन्धनखेददम् । तेनाभवन्नभो व्याप्तं भोगिभिः पर्वतोपमैः ॥ २८ ॥

nāgāstramādade bhīmaṃ pāśabandhanakhedadam | tenābhavannabho vyāptaṃ bhogibhiḥ parvatopamaiḥ || 28 ||

Sindhu then took up the terrible serpent-weapon, which binds its victims with cords and wears them out. Because of it the sky filled with snakes as huge as mountains.

सिन्धु ने अब भयानक सर्प-अस्त्र उठाया, जो फंदों से बांधकर थका देता है। उसके कारण आकाश पहाड़ जैसे विशाल सांपों से भर गया।

सर्पैर्विलसिता भूमिर्मृणालैः सरसी यथा । संपन्ना गिरयः सर्वे कृष्णपन्नगकम्बलाः ॥ २९ ॥

sarpairvilasitā bhūmirmṛṇālaiḥ sarasī yathā | saṃpannā girayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇapannagakambalāḥ || 29 ||

The ground shone with snakes the way a pond shines with lotus stems. Every mountain became wrapped in a blanket of black snakes.

धरती सांपों से वैसे चमकने लगी जैसे तालाब कमल की डंडियों से चमकता है। हर पहाड़ काले सांपों की चादर से ढक गया।

पदार्थाः सर्व एवेमे विषोष्मखिन्नतां ययुः । सपर्वतवनाभोगा ययौ विवशतां मही ॥ ३० ॥

padārthāḥ sarva evaime viṣoṣmakhinnatāṃ yayuḥ | saparvatavanābhogā yayau vivaśatāṃ mahī || 30 ||

Every single thing grew weary from the burning heat of the poison. The earth, with all its mountains and wide forests, became helpless.

हर एक चीज़ ज़हर की गर्मी से थककर बेहाल हो गई। पहाड़ों और चौड़े जंगलों समेत पूरी धरती बेबस हो गई।

पूताङ्गारसमाकीर्णं विषवैषम्यशंसिनः । ववू रूक्षोष्णनीहारवाता ज्वलनरेणवः ॥ ३१ ॥

pūtāṅgārasamākīrṇaṃ viṣavaiṣamyśaṃsinaḥ | vavū rūkṣoṣṇanīhāravātā jvalanareṇavaḥ || 31 ||

Winds blew that were dry and hot, yet strangely misty too, thick with fiery dust and glowing embers, proclaiming the disorder the poison had caused.

हवाएं चलने लगीं जो सूखी और गर्म थीं, पर साथ ही अजीब तरह से धुंधली भी थीं, चिंगारियों और जलती धूल से भरी हुई, मानो ज़हर की गड़बड़ी की गवाही दे रही हों।

विदूरथोऽथ सौपर्णमाददेऽस्त्रं महास्त्रवित् । उदगुर्गरुडास्त्रेण सौपर्णाः पर्वता इव ॥ ३२ ॥

vidūratho'tha saurpaṇamādade'astraṃ mahāstravit | udagurgaruḍāstreṇa saurpaṇāḥ parvatā iva || 32 ||

Vidūratha, master of great weapons, then took up the Garuḍa-weapon, the weapon of the eagle. From the Garuḍa-weapon rose birds as huge as mountains.

तब महान अस्त्रों के ज्ञाता विदूरथ ने गरुड़-अस्त्र उठाया। गरुड़-अस्त्र से पहाड़ जैसे विशाल पक्षी उठ खड़े हुए।

काञ्चनीकृतसर्वाशाः सर्वाशापरिपूरकाः । पक्षपर्वतसंरम्भजनितप्रलयानिलाः ॥ ३३ ॥

kāñcanīkṛtasarvāśāḥ sarvāśāparipūrakāḥ | pakṣaparvatasaṃrambhajanitapralayānilāḥ || 33 ||

They turned every direction golden and filled the whole sky. The furious beating of their mountain-sized wings raised winds like those at the end of the world.

उन्होंने हर दिशा को सुनहरा कर दिया और पूरे आकाश को भर दिया। उनके पहाड़ जैसे पंखों की तेज़ फड़फड़ाहट से प्रलय जैसी आंधी उठ खड़ी हुई।

घोणानिलजवाकृष्टश्वसद्भुजगमण्डलाः । महाघुरघुरारावपूरिताम्भोधिखण्डकाः ॥ ३४ ॥

ghoṇānilajavākṛṣṭaśvasadbhujagamaṇḍalāḥ | mahāghuraghurārāvapūritāmbhodhikhṇḍakāḥ || 34 ||

The wind rushing from their beaks dragged along hissing coils of snakes, and their deep, rumbling cries filled whole stretches of the ocean.

उनकी चोंचों से निकलती तेज़ हवा फुफकारते सांपों के जाल को अपने साथ खींच ले गई, और उनकी गहरी गरजती आवाज़ से समुद्र के हिस्से भर गए।

स सुपर्णघनोऽपात्तं सर्पौघं भूप्रपूरकम् । कष्टं शलशलायन्तमगस्त्य इव वारिधिम् ॥ ३५ ॥

sa suparṇaghano'pāttaṃ sarpaaughaṃ bhūprapūrakam | kaṣṭaṃ śalaśalāyantamagastya iva vāridhim || 35 ||

That thick mass of eagles swallowed up the flood of snakes covering the earth, snakes hissing and writhing in pain, just as the sage Agastya once swallowed the ocean.

गरुड़ों के उस घने समूह ने धरती को ढके हुए सांपों की बाढ़ को निगल लिया, सांप पीड़ा से फुफकार और छटपटा रहे थे, बिल्कुल वैसे जैसे ऋषि अगस्त्य ने कभी समुद्र को पी लिया था।

सर्पकम्बलनिर्मुक्तं भूमण्डलमराजत । चिरात्तमवनीरन्ध्रमिव निर्वारिराशि च ॥ ३६ ॥

sarpakambalanirmuktaṃ bhūmaṇḍalamarājata | cirāttamavanīrandhramiva nirvārirāśi ca || 36 ||

Freed from its blanket of snakes, the earth shone bright again, like a deep pit whose water had at last been drained away.

सांपों की चादर से मुक्त होकर धरती फिर से चमक उठी, जैसे कोई गहरा गड्ढा जिसका पानी आखिरकार सूख गया हो।

ततस्तद्गरुडानीकं क्वाप्यगच्छददृश्यताम् । दीपौघ इव वातेन शरदेवाब्दमण्डलम् ॥ ३७ ॥

tataḥ tadgaruḍānīkaṃ kvāpyagacchadadṛśyatām | dīpaugha iva vātena śaradevābdamaṇḍalam || 37 ||

Then that army of eagles went off somewhere and vanished from sight, like a row of lamps blown out by the wind, or like a bank of clouds swept away by autumn.

फिर गरुड़ों की वह सेना कहीं चली गई और आंखों से ओझल हो गई, जैसे हवा से बुझे हुए दीयों की कतार, या शरद ऋतु में बिखरे बादलों का झुंड।

वज्रभीत्येव पक्षौघपर्वतप्रकरः पुरः । स्वप्नदृष्टं जगदिव संकल्पपुरपूरवत् ॥ ३८ ॥

vajrabhītyeva pakṣaughaparvataprakaraḥ puraḥ | svapnadṛṣṭaṃ jagadiva saṃkalpapurapūravat || 38 ||

That heap of mountain-sized wings disappeared before their eyes as if in fear of a thunderbolt, like a world seen in a dream, like a city that exists only in imagination.

पहाड़ जैसे पंखों का वह ढेर मानो वज्र के डर से आंखों के सामने ही गायब हो गया, जैसे सपने में देखी हुई कोई दुनिया, या केवल कल्पना में बसा कोई नगर।

ततस्तमोऽस्त्रमसृजत्सिन्धुरन्धान्धकारदम् । तेनान्धकारो ववृधे कृष्णो भूजठरोपमः ॥ ३९ ॥

tatastamo'stram asṛjatsindhurandhāndhakāradam | tenāndhakāro vavṛdhe kṛṣṇo bhūjaṭharopamaḥ || 39 ||

Then Sindhu let loose the weapon of darkness, the weapon that brings a blinding dark. Because of it the darkness grew thick and black, like the inside of the earth's belly.

फिर सिन्धु ने अंधकार का अस्त्र छोड़ा, जो आंखों को अंधा कर देने वाला घोर अंधेरा लाता है। उससे अंधकार इतना घना और काला हो गया जैसे धरती के पेट के भीतर का अंधेरा।

रोदोरन्ध्रे प्रविसृत एकार्णव इवाभवत् । मत्स्या इवाभवन्सेनास्ताराश्च मणयोऽभवन् ॥ ४० ॥

rodorandhre pravisṛta ekārṇava ivābhavat | matsyā ivābhavansenāstārāśca maṇayo'bhavan || 40 ||

Spreading through the space between heaven and earth, the darkness became like one great flood ocean. The armies looked like fish in it, and the stars looked like jewels.

आकाश और धरती के बीच की जगह में फैलकर वह अंधकार मानो एक विशाल समुद्र बन गया। सेनाएं उसमें मछलियों जैसी और तारे रत्नों जैसे लगने लगे।

अन्धकारप्रवृत्तेन मषीपङ्कार्णवोपमम् । कज्जलाचलसंभारोद्भूतकल्पानिलैरिव ॥ ४१ ॥

andhakārapravṛttena maṣīpaṅkārṇavopamam | kajjalācalasaṃbhārodbhūtakalpānilairiva || 41 ||

As the darkness spread, everything turned like an ocean of ink and mud, as though doomsday winds were rising from a mountain heap of black soot.

जैसे-जैसे अंधकार फैलता गया, सब कुछ स्याही और कीचड़ के समुद्र जैसा हो गया, मानो काजल के किसी पहाड़ से प्रलय की आंधियां उठ रही हों।

अन्धकूपे निपतिता इवासन्सकलाः प्रजाः । कल्पान्त इव संशेमुर्व्यवहारा दिशं प्रतिं ॥ ४२ ॥

andhakūpe nipatitā ivāsansakalāḥ prajāḥ | kalpānta iva saṃśemurvyavahārā diśaṃ pratiṃ || 42 ||

All the people seemed to have fallen into a dark, blind well. In every direction, all activity fell still and silent, as it does at the end of an age.

सब लोग मानो किसी अंधे कुएं में गिर पड़े हों। हर दिशा में हर काम रुक गया और सन्नाटा छा गया, जैसे किसी युग के अंत में होता है।

विदूरथोऽथ मार्तण्डं दीपं ब्रह्माण्डमण्डपे । अस्त्रं मन्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठः सृष्ट्वा मन्त्रो व्यचेष्टयत् ॥ ४३ ॥

vidūratho'tha mārtaṇḍaṃ dīpaṃ brahmāṇḍamaṇḍape | astraṃ mantravidāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sṛṣṭvā mantrō vyacēṣṭayat || 43 ||

Then Vidūratha, the best of those who know mantras, created a weapon called Mārtaṇḍa, the Sun, a lamp for the hall of the universe, and set it working with his mantra.

तब मंत्रों के ज्ञाताओं में श्रेष्ठ विदूरथ ने मार्तण्ड नामक अस्त्र बनाया, यह ब्रह्मांड रूपी सभा-भवन के लिए एक दीपक था, और अपने मंत्र से उसे सक्रिय कर दिया।

अथोदिततमोम्भोधिमर्कागस्त्यो गभस्तिभिः । अपिबत्कृष्णमम्भोदं शरत्काल इवामलः ॥ ४४ ॥

athoditatamombhodhimarkāgastyō ghabhastibhiḥ | apibatkṛṣṇamambhodaṃ śaratkāla ivāmalaḥ || 44 ||

Then the sun, like the sage Agastya, drank up with its rays the risen ocean of darkness and the black cloud, just as the clear autumn season drinks up the clouds.

तब सूर्य ने, मानो ऋषि अगस्त्य की तरह, अपनी किरणों से उठे हुए अंधकार के समुद्र और काले बादल को पी लिया, बिल्कुल वैसे जैसे निर्मल शरद ऋतु बादलों को सोख लेती है।

अन्धकाराम्बरोन्मुक्ता विरेजुरमला दिशः । भूपतेः पुरतः कान्ता इव रम्यपयोधराः ॥ ४५ ॥

andhakārāmbaronmuktā virejuramalā diśaḥ | bhūpateḥ purataḥ kāntā iva ramyapayodharāḥ || 45 ||

Freed from the covering of darkness, the directions shone bright and clear before the king, like beautiful women with lovely, full breasts.

अंधकार के आवरण से मुक्त होकर, सभी दिशाएं राजा के सामने साफ और उज्ज्वल चमकने लगीं, जैसे सुंदर स्त्रियां अपने मनोहर उरोजों के साथ खड़ी हों।

ययुः प्रकटतामन्तरखिला वनराजयः । लोभकज्जलजालेन मुक्ता इव सतां धियः ॥ ४६ ॥

yayuḥ prakaṭatāmantarakhilā vanarājayaḥ | lobhakajjalajālena muktā iva satāṃ dhiyaḥ || 46 ||

All the rows of forest all around became visible again, as if freed from a net of black soot, like the minds of good people freed from the soot of greed.

चारों ओर के जंगल फिर से साफ दिखने लगे, मानो किसी काले जाल से मुक्त हो गए हों, ठीक वैसे जैसे अच्छे लोगों का मन लोभ की कालिख से मुक्त हो जाता है।

अथ कोपाकुलः सिन्धू राक्षसास्त्रं महाभयम्। क्षणादुदीरयामास मन्त्रोदीर्णशरात्मकम् ॥ ४७ ॥

atha kopākulaḥ sindhū rākṣasāstraṃ mahābhayam| kṣaṇādudīrayāmāsa mantroudīrṇaśarātmakam || 47 ||

Then Sindhu, overcome with rage, in an instant released the terrifying demon-weapon, made of arrows called forth by mantra.

फिर क्रोध से भरा सिन्धु एक ही पल में वह भयानक राक्षस-अस्त्र छोड़ बैठा, जो मंत्र से बुलाए गए बाणों से बना था।

उदगुर्भीषणा दिग्भ्यः परुषा वनराक्षसाः। पातालगजफूत्कारक्षुब्धा इव महार्णवाः ॥ ४८ ॥

udagurbhīṣaṇā digbhyaḥ paruṣā vanarākṣasāḥ| pātālagajaphūtkārakṣubdhā iva mahārṇavāḥ || 48 ||

Fierce, savage forest demons rose up from every direction, surging like great oceans churned up by the snorting breath of the elephants of the underworld.

हर दिशा से भयंकर, क्रूर वनराक्षस उठ खड़े हुए, ऐसे उमड़ते हुए जैसे पाताल के हाथियों की फुफकार से विशाल समुद्र मथ उठें।

कपिलोर्ध्वजटाधूम्राः स्फुटच्चटचटारवाः। अग्नयो लेलिहानोग्रजिह्वा आर्द्रेन्धना इव ॥ ४९ ॥

kapilorurdhvajaṭādhūmrāḥ sphuṭaccaṭacaṭāravāḥ| agnayo lelihānograjihvā ārdrendhanā iva || 49 ||

Their tawny matted hair stood on end, the color of smoke, and they crackled and sputtered like fires with fierce, licking tongues fed on wet wood.

उनकी धुएं जैसी भूरी उलझी जटाएं ऊपर की ओर खड़ी थीं, और वे चटचट की आवाज़ के साथ ऐसे जल रहे थे जैसे गीली लकड़ी पर जलती हुई आग अपनी तेज़ जीभों से चाट रही हो।

सावर्तवृत्तयो व्योम्नि भीमचीत्कारटांकृताः। अग्निदाहा महाधूमविलोला इव सोल्मुकाः ॥ ५० ॥

sāvartavṛttayo vyomni bhīmacītkāraṭāṃkṛtāḥ| agnidāhā mahādhūmavilolā iva solmukāḥ || 50 ||

They whirled in circles across the sky, screeching with fearsome cries, like fires burning with thick swirling smoke and flying firebrands.

वे आकाश में घूमते हुए चक्कर काट रहे थे, डरावनी चीख़ें मार रहे थे, जैसे आग जल रही हो और उसमें से घना धुआँ उठ रहा हो और जलती हुई लकड़ियाँ उड़ रही हों।

दंष्ट्राबिसाङ्कुराक्रान्तमुखपङ्काक्षदेहकाः। उदिता लोमजम्बाला दुष्पल्वलतटा इव ॥ ५१ ॥

daṃṣṭrābisāṅkurākrāntamukhapaṅkākṣadehakāḥ| uditā lomajambālā duṣpalvalataṭā iva || 51 ||

Their faces, eyes and bodies were like mud, pierced through by fangs like sprouting lotus shoots; they rose up with hair like slime, like the muddy banks of a foul pond.

उनके चेहरे, आँखें और शरीर मिट्टी जैसे थे, जिनमें से कमल की कोंपलों जैसी नुकीली दाढ़ें निकली हुई थीं; वे बालों में कीचड़ लपेटे हुए उठे, जैसे किसी गंदे तालाब के कीचड़ भरे किनारे।

निगिरन्तः प्रधावन्तो गर्जन्तः सर्जिता इव । जटाजालतडित्पुञ्जा जलदाः सजला इव ॥ ५२ ॥

nigirantaḥ pradhāvanto garjantaḥ sarjitā iva | jaṭājālatadiṭpuñjā jaladāḥ sajalā iva || 52 ||

They swallowed, rushed forward and roared as if unleashed, their masses of matted hair flashing like bundles of lightning, like clouds heavy with water.

वे निगलते, आगे दौड़ते और गरजते थे, जैसे किसी ने उन्हें खुला छोड़ दिया हो; उनकी जटाओं के गुच्छे बिजली की तरह चमक रहे थे, जैसे पानी से भरे बादल।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तस्मिँल्लीलानाथो विदूरथः । नारायणास्त्रं प्रददे दुष्टभूतनिवारणम् ॥ ५३ ॥

etasminnantare tasmillīlānātho vidūrathaḥ | nārāyaṇāstraṃ pradade duṣṭabhūtanivāraṇam || 53 ||

Meanwhile, in that battle, Vidūratha, master of the contest, released the Narayana weapon, which wards off evil spirits.

इसी बीच, उस युद्ध में विदूरथ ने, जो इस खेल के स्वामी थे, नारायण अस्त्र छोड़ा, जो दुष्ट भूत-प्रेतों को दूर भगाता है।

उदीर्यमाण एवास्मिन्मन्त्रराजेऽस्त्रराजयः । राक्षसानां प्रशेमुस्ता अन्धकार इवोदये ॥ ५४ ॥

udīryamāṇa evāsmi mantrarāje'strarājayaḥ | rākṣasānāṃ praśemustā andhakāra ivotaye || 54 ||

As soon as this king of mantras was uttered, the rows of the demons' weapons went still, like darkness fading at sunrise.

यह मंत्रों का राजा बोलते ही राक्षसों के हथियारों की पंक्तियाँ शांत पड़ गईं, जैसे सूरज उगते ही अंधेरा मिट जाता है।

प्रमुष्टराक्षसानीकमभवद्भुवनत्रयम् । शरदीव गताम्भोदं व्योम निर्मलमाबभौ ॥ ५५ ॥

pramuṣṭarākṣasānīkamabhavadbhuvanatrayam | śaradīv gatāmbhodaṃ vyoma nirmalamābabhau || 55 ||

The three worlds were stripped of the army of demons and shone out clear, like the autumn sky once the clouds have passed.

तीनों लोक राक्षसों की सेना से खाली हो गए और साफ़ चमकने लगे, जैसे शरद ऋतु का आकाश बादल छँटने के बाद निखर आता है।

अथ सिन्धुर्मुमोचास्त्रमाग्नेयं ज्वलिताम्बरम् । जज्वलुः ककुभस्तेन कल्पाग्निज्वलिता इव ॥ ५६ ॥

atha sindhurmumocāstramāgneyaṃ jvalitāmbaram | jajvaluḥ kakubhastena kalpāgnijvalitā iva || 56 ||

Then Sindhu released the fire weapon, and the sky itself caught flame; the four quarters blazed with it, as if burning with the fire that ends an age.

फिर सिन्धु ने अग्नि अस्त्र छोड़ा, और आकाश खुद आग की लपटों से भर गया; चारों दिशाएँ उससे धधक उठीं, मानो युग के अंत की आग से जल रही हों।

धूमाम्बुदभराच्छन्ना बभूवुः सकला दिशः । गगने प्रोतपातालतिमिराकुलिता इव ॥ ५७ ॥

dhūmāmbudabharācchannā babhūvuḥ sakalā diśaḥ | gagane protapātālatimirākulitā iva || 57 ||

All directions were covered by a mass of smoke-clouds, as if the darkness of the underworld had been drawn up and let loose in confusion across the sky.

सारी दिशाएँ धुएँ के बादलों से ढक गईं, मानो पाताल का अंधेरा खींचकर आकाश में उलझा दिया गया हो।

बभूवुर्ज्वलिताकारा गिरयः काञ्चना इव । प्रफुल्लवननीरन्ध्रचम्पकौघवना इव ॥ ५८ ॥

babhūvurjvalitākārā girayaḥ kāñcanā iva | praphullavananīrandhracampakaughavanā iva || 58 ||

The mountains took on a blazing look, like mountains of gold, like forests thick and unbroken with champak trees in full bloom.

पहाड़ जलते हुए दिखने लगे, मानो सोने के पहाड़ हों, मानो पूरी तरह खिले हुए चंपा के पेड़ों से भरे घने जंगल हों।

ययुर्व्योमाद्रिदिक्कुञ्जा ज्वालाजालजटालताम् । कुङ्कुमेनोत्सवे मृत्योः समालब्धा इव स्रजः ॥ ५९ ॥

yayurvyomādridikkunjā jvālājālajaṭālatām | kuṅkumenotsave mṛtyoḥ samālabdhā iva srajaḥ || 59 ||

The groves of sky, mountain and horizon turned into a tangled net of flame, like garlands smeared with saffron at a festival of death.

आकाश, पहाड़ और दिशाओं के कोने-कोने आग के उलझे हुए जाल में बदल गए, जैसे मृत्यु के किसी उत्सव में केसर लगी हुई मालाएँ।

ज्वलिता जनता चैकशङ्किनी सा नभःस्पृशा । सहस्राकृतिनौवेगचलितेनेव सागरात् ॥ ६० ॥

jvalitā janatā caikaśaṅkinī sā nabhaḥspṛśā | sahasrākṛtinauvegacaliteneva sāgarāt || 60 ||

That burning crowd of demons, all gripped by one same terror, rose up touching the sky, as if driven out of the ocean by the speed of a thousand ships.

राक्षसों की वह जलती हुई भीड़, जो सब एक ही डर से जकड़ी हुई थी, आकाश को छूती हुई उठी, मानो हज़ार जहाज़ों की गति से समुद्र से बाहर धकेली गई हो।

जित्वा रिपुं पुनरसौ यथा प्रहरते तथा । वारुणं विससर्जास्त्रं पूजयित्वा विदूरथः ॥ ६१ ॥

jitvā ripuṃ punarasau yathā praharate tathā | vāruṇaṃ visasarjāstraṃ pūjayitvā vidūrathaḥ || 61 ||

Having conquered the enemy, and now to strike again, Vidūratha honoured the Varuna weapon and released it.

शत्रु को जीतने के बाद, फिर से वार करने के लिए, विदूरथ ने वरुण अस्त्र का सम्मान करके उसे छोड़ दिया।

आययुः सलिलापूरास्तमःपूरा इवाभितः । अधस्तादूर्ध्वतो दिग्भ्यो द्रवरूपा इवाद्रयः ॥ ६२ ॥

āyayuḥ salilāpūrāstamaḥpūrā ivābhitaḥ | adhastādūrdhvato digbhyo dravarūpā ivādrayaḥ || 62 ||

Floods of water came pouring in from every side, like floods of darkness, from below, from above, from all directions, like mountains turned to liquid.

हर तरफ़ से पानी की बाढ़ें उमड़ पड़ीं, जैसे अंधेरे की बाढ़ें हों, नीचे से, ऊपर से, सभी दिशाओं से, मानो पहाड़ पिघलकर बह रहे हों।

भागा इव शरव्योम्नि धृतयाना इवाम्बुदाः । महार्णवा इवोच्चस्थाः कुलशैलशिला इव ॥ ६३ ॥

bhāgā iva śaravyomni dhṛtayānā ivāmbudāḥ | mahārṇavā ivoccacsthāḥ kulaśailaśilā iva || 63 ||

They seemed like fragments filling a sky of arrows, like clouds driven along, like great oceans lifted on high, like boulders from the great mountains.

वे बाणों से भरे आकाश के टुकड़ों जैसे लग रहे थे, जैसे उड़ते हुए बादल, जैसे ऊँचाई पर उठे हुए विशाल समुद्र, जैसे बड़े पहाड़ों की चट्टानें।

तमालौघा इवोड्डीनाः संधिता इव रात्रयः । कज्जलौघा इवोद्भूता लोकालोकतटादिव ॥ ६४ ॥

tamālaughā ivodḍīnāḥ saṃdhitā iva rātrayaḥ | kajjalaughā ivodbhūtā lokālokataṭādiva || 64 ||

Like masses of dark tamala trees taking to the air, like many nights fused into one, like masses of black soot rising up, as if from the edge of the Lokaloka mountain that rims the world.

जैसे तमाल के काले पेड़ों के झुंड हवा में उड़ रहे हों, जैसे कई रातें मिलकर एक हो गई हों, जैसे कालिख के ढेर उठ रहे हों, मानो लोकालोक पर्वत के किनारे से, जो दुनिया की सीमा है।

रसातलगुहाभोगा इव व्योमदिदृक्षवः । महाघुरघुरारावरंहोबृंहितमूर्तयः ॥ ६५ ॥

rasātalaguhabhogā iva vyomadidṛkṣavaḥ | mahāghuraghuarāvaraṃhobṛṃhitamūrtayaḥ || 65 ||

Like the coiled serpent-hoods in the caves of the underworld, wishing to see the sky, their forms swelled and roared with a great rumbling ghura-ghura sound and rushing speed.

जैसे पाताल की गुफाओं में सर्पों के फन कुंडली मारे हों, आकाश देखने की चाह में, उनके शरीर फूल गए और वे तेज़ रफ़्तार से घुर-घुर की भारी गड़गड़ाहट के साथ गरजने लगे।

तामग्निसंततिं मत्तामाचचामाम्बुसंततिः । भुवनव्यापिनी संध्यामाशु कृष्णेव यामिनी ॥ ६६ ॥

tāmagni saṃtatiṃ mattāmācacāmāmbusaṃtatiḥ | bhuvanavyāpinī saṃdhyāmāśu kṛṣṇeva yāminī || 66 ||

The flood of water drank up that raging spread of fire, quickly, as a dark night swallows the twilight that spreads over the world.

पानी की बाढ़ ने उस भड़कती हुई आग को जल्दी से पी लिया, जैसे काली रात दुनिया भर में फैली हुई साँझ को निगल जाती है।

तामग्निसंततिं पीत्वा पूरयामास भूतलम्। जलश्रीर्जटितं देहं निद्रेव व्यक्तिमेयुषी ॥ ६७ ॥

tāmagni-santatiṃ pītvā pūrayāmāsa bhūtalam| jalaśrīrjaṭitaṃ dehaṃ nidreva vyaktimēyuṣī || 67 ||

Having drunk up that spread of fire, the splendor of water filled the whole earth, its body inlaid and full, like sleep taking on a visible form.

उस फैली हुई आग को पीकर, पानी की शोभा ने पूरी धरती को भर दिया, उसका शरीर पूरी तरह भरा हुआ था, जैसे नींद ने साकार रूप ले लिया हो।

एवंविधानस्त्रमोहान्विदधुर्धावनेतरे। मिथोमायामयानग्रे पश्यन्त्यनुभवन्ति च ॥ ६८ ॥

evaṃvidhānastramohānvidadhurdhāvanetare| mithomāyāmayānagre paśyantyanubhavanti ca || 68 ||

The others, in their rushing about, brought on such delusions from the weapons; running forward they see and feel before them things that are nothing but each other's illusions.

बाकी लोग इधर-उधर दौड़ते हुए हथियारों से ऐसे भ्रम पैदा कर रहे थे; आगे दौड़ते हुए वे अपने सामने वही देखते और महसूस करते थे जो एक-दूसरे की माया भर थी।

हेतिभारवराः सिन्धोश्चक्ररक्षास्ततोऽम्भसा। तृणानीव गताः प्रोह्य रथश्चास्याभवत्प्लुतः ॥ ६९ ॥

hetibhāravarāḥ sindhoścakrarakṣāstato'mbhasā| tṛṇānīva gatāḥ prohya rathaścāsyābhavatplutaḥ || 69 ||

Then the water swept away Sindhu's finest weapon-bearers, the guards of his chariot wheels, carrying them off like blades of grass, and his chariot itself was left floating.

फिर पानी सिन्धु के सबसे अच्छे हथियारबंद रक्षकों को, जो उसके रथ के पहियों की रखवाली करते थे, बहा ले गया, उन्हें घास के तिनकों की तरह उड़ाकर, और उसका रथ खुद पानी में तैरने लगा।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे सिन्धुरस्त्रं सस्मार शोषणम्। आपत्त्राणकरं दैवं ददौ च शररूपिणम् ॥ ७० ॥

etasminnantare sindhurastram sasmāra śoṣaṇam| āpattrāṇakaraṃ daivaṃ dadau ca śararūpiṇam || 70 ||

Meanwhile Sindhu called to mind the drying weapon, and the divine power that protects one from danger, and gave it shape in an arrow.

इसी बीच सिन्धु ने सुखाने वाले अस्त्र को याद किया, और उस दैवी शक्ति को, जो खतरे से बचाती है, बाण का रूप देकर छोड़ दिया।

शशामाम्बुमयी माया तेन यामेव भास्वता। ये मृतास्ते मृता एव बभूवुः शोषिता भुवः ॥ ७१ ॥

śaśāmāmbumayī māyā tena yāmeva bhāsvatā| ye mṛtāste mṛtā eva babhūvuḥ śoṣitā bhuvaḥ || 71 ||

That shining weapon stilled the illusion made of water; the earth dried up, and those who had died stayed dead.

उस चमकते हुए अस्त्र ने पानी से बनी माया को शांत कर दिया; धरती सूख गई, और जो मर चुके थे वे मरे ही रहे।

अथ मूर्खरुषा तुल्यस्तापः संतापयन्प्रजाः । जजृम्भे झर्झराकीर्णवनविस्तारकर्कशः ॥ ७२ ॥

atha mūrkharuṣā tulyastāpaḥ saṃtāpayanprajāḥ | jajṛmbhe jharjharākīrṇavanavistārakarkaśaḥ || 72 ||

Then a heat like the rage of a fool spread out, scorching the people; it arose harsh, spreading over forests filled with withering, rattling growth.

फिर एक मूर्ख के गुस्से जैसी तपिश फैल गई, जो लोगों को झुलसाने लगी; यह कठोर होकर उन जंगलों में फैल गई जो मुरझाई हुई, खड़खड़ाती झाड़ियों से भरे थे।

कचत्कनकनिःस्यन्दसुन्दराङ्गच्छविर्दिशाम् । आसीद्राजवरस्त्रीणामिवालेपोऽङ्गसंगतः ॥ ७३ ॥

kacatkanakaniḥsyandasundarāṅgacchavirdiśām | āsīdrājavarastrīṇāmivālepo'ṅgasaṃgataḥ || 73 ||

दिशाओं की चमक, जो पिघले हुए सोने से बहते हुए शरीर जैसी सुंदर थी, ऐसी लग रही थी जैसे सबसे सुंदर रानियों के अंगों पर लगा हुआ सुगंधित लेप।

तेन धर्ममयीं मूर्च्छामाजग्मुस्तद्विरोधिनः । ग्रीष्मदावानलोत्तप्ता मृदवः पल्लवा इव ॥ ७४ ॥

tena dharmamayīṃ mūrcchāmājagmustadvirodhinḥ | grīṣmadāvānalottaptā mṛdavaḥ pallavā iva || 74 ||

Because of that heat, its enemies fell into a fainting spell brought on by heat, like soft young leaves scorched by a forest fire in summer.

उस गर्मी की वजह से उसके विरोधी गर्मी के मारे बेहोश हो गए, जैसे गर्मियों की जंगल की आग से झुलसी हुई कोमल नई पत्तियाँ बेहोश हो जाती हैं।

विदूरथो रणोद्रेके तावत्क्रेंकारमाततम् । कोदण्डं कुण्डलीकृत्य पर्जन्यास्त्रमथाददे ॥ ७५ ॥

vidūratho raṇodreke tāvatkreṃkāramātatam | kodaṇḍaṃ kuṇḍalīkṛtya parjanyāstramathādade || 75 ||

Then, as the battle grew fierce, Viduratha curved his bow, which was stretched taut and twanging loudly, into a full circle, and took up the rain weapon.

फिर जब लड़ाई और तेज़ हो गई, तो विदूरथ ने अपने धनुष को, जो पूरी तरह खिंचा हुआ था और ज़ोर से टंकार कर रहा था, पूरा गोल मोड़ लिया और वर्षा वाला अस्त्र उठा लिया।

उदगुः पङ्क्तयोऽब्दानां यामिन्य इव संचिताः । तमालविपिनोड्डीनसंरम्भादम्बुमन्थराः ॥ ७६ ॥

udaguḥ paṅktayo'bdānāṃ yāminya iva saṃcitāḥ | tamālavipinoḍḍīnasamrambhādambumantharāḥ || 76 ||

Rows of clouds rose up, massed together like the gathered darkness of night, heavy with water, rushing up eagerly as if a whole tamala forest had taken flight.

बादलों की पंक्तियाँ उठीं, इकट्ठी होकर रात के अंधेरे जैसी घनी, पानी से भारी, ऐसे तेज़ी से ऊपर उठतीं मानो पूरा तमाल का जंगल उड़ चला हो।

वामना वारिपूरेण गर्जनोद्दामसंचराः । महिम्नामन्थराशेषककुम्मण्डलकुण्डलाः ॥ ७७ ॥

vāmanā vāripūreṇa garjanoddamasaṃcarāḥ | mahimnāmantharāśeṣakakummaṇḍalakuṇḍalāḥ || 77 ||

Bent low under the weight of their water, roaring as they moved without restraint, the clouds formed a ring around the whole horizon, moving slowly because of their huge size.

पानी के बोझ से झुके हुए, गरजते हुए बेरोकटोक चलते हुए, बादलों ने पूरे क्षितिज के चारों ओर एक घेरा बना लिया और अपने बड़े आकार के कारण धीरे-धीरे चल रहे थे।

ववुरावलितासारा मेघडम्बरभेदिनः । कीर्णसीकरनीहारभारोदाराः समीरणाः ॥ ७८ ॥

vavurāvalitāsārā meghaḍambarabhedinaḥ | kīrṇasīkaranīhārabhāroddārāḥ samīraṇāḥ || 78 ||

Winds blew, bent under heavy sheets of rain, tearing through the massed clouds, heavy with scattered spray and mist.

हवाएँ चलीं, भारी बारिश की धाराओं से झुकी हुई, घने बादलों को चीरती हुईं, बिखरी हुई फुहार और कोहरे के बोझ से भारी।

प्रपुस्फुरुः सुसौवर्णसर्पापत्सरणोपमाः । विद्युतो दिवि दैव्यस्त्रीकटाक्षवलना इव ॥ ७९ ॥

prapusphuruḥ susauvarṇasarpāpatsaraṇopamāḥ | vidyuto divi daivyastrīkaṭākṣavalanā iva || 79 ||

Lightning flickered in the sky, like beautiful golden serpents darting away in fear, like the flickering sidelong glances of celestial women.

आकाश में बिजली चमकी, जैसे सुंदर सुनहरे साँप डर के मारे भाग रहे हों, जैसे स्वर्ग की स्त्रियों की चंचल तिरछी नज़रें।

जुघूर्णुर्गर्जनोच्छूनप्रतिश्रुद्धनकन्दराः । दिशश्चलितमातङ्गसिंहर्क्षरवघर्घराः ॥ ८० ॥

jughūrṇurgarjanocchūnapratiśruddhanakandarāḥ | diśaścalitamātaṅgasiṃharakṣaravaghargarāḥ || 80 ||

The mountain caves reverberated, swollen with the echo of the thunder; the directions grew harsh with the rasping cries of startled elephants, lions, and bears.

पहाड़ों की गुफाएँ गूँज उठीं, गरज की प्रतिध्वनि से भर गईं; चारों दिशाएँ डरे हुए हाथियों, शेरों और भालुओं की कर्कश चीखों से कठोर हो उठीं।

महामुसलधाराभिः पेतुरासारवृष्टयः । कष्टटंकारकठिनाः कृतान्तस्येव दृष्टयः ॥ ८१ ॥

mahāmusaladhārābhiḥ pēturāsāravṛṣṭayaḥ | kaṣṭaṭaṃkārakathināḥ kṛtāntasyeva dṛṣṭayaḥ || 81 ||

Torrential rains fell in streams as thick as great clubs, hard and harsh with a grating sound, like the deadly glances of Death himself.

मूसलाधार बारिश बड़े-बड़े मूसलों जैसी मोटी धाराओं में गिरी, कठोर और कर्कश आवाज़ के साथ, जैसे साक्षात यमराज की भयानक नज़रें।

उदभूत्प्रथमं बाष्प उष्णोऽनलनिभो भुवः पातालादभ्रवृन्दानां युद्धायेवात्तविभ्रमः ॥ ८२ ॥

udabhūtprathamaṃ bāṣpa uṣṇo'nalanibho bhuvaḥ pātālādabhravṛndānāṃ yuddhāyevāttavibhramaḥ || 82 ||

First a hot vapor rose up from the earth, like fire, as if from the underworld, whirling as though to fight the massed clouds.

सबसे पहले धरती से एक गर्म भाप उठी, आग जैसी, मानो पाताल से, और घूमती हुई ऐसे मानो बादलों के समूह से लड़ने आई हो।

ततो निमेषमात्रेण प्रशेमुर्मृगतृष्णिकाः परबोधरसापूरैर्यथा संसारवासनाः ॥ ८३ ॥

tato nimeṣamātreṇa praśemurmṛgatṛṣṇikāḥ parabodharasāpūrairyathā saṃsāravāsanāḥ || 83 ||

Then, in a single blink of an eye, the mirages vanished, just as the deep habits of worldly life vanish in floods of the taste of supreme awakening.

फिर, एक पल में ही, मृगतृष्णा मिट गई, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे परम जागृति के रस की बाढ़ में संसार की गहरी आदतें मिट जाती हैं।

आसीत्पङ्काङ्कमखिलं भूमण्डलमसंचरम् पूरितः पूर्णधाराभिः सिन्धुः सिन्धुरिवाम्बुना ॥ ८४ ॥

āsītpankāṅkamakhilaṃ bhūmaṇḍalamasañcaram pūritaḥ pūrṇadhārābhiḥ sindhuḥ sindhurivāmbunā || 84 ||

The whole surface of the earth became covered with mud and impassable, and every river, filled with full torrents of water, became like the ocean itself.

पूरी धरती कीचड़ से ढँक गई और वहाँ से गुज़रना मुश्किल हो गया, और हर नदी, पानी की पूरी धाराओं से भरकर, समुद्र जैसी बन गई।

वायव्यमस्त्रमसृजत्पूरिताकाशकोटरम् कल्पान्तनृत्तसंमत्तरटद्भैरवभीषणम् ॥ ८५ ॥

vāyavyamastram asṛjatpūritākāśakoṭaram kalpāntanṛttasaṃmattarṭadbhairavabhīṣaṇam || 85 ||

He then released the wind weapon, which filled the whole hollow of the sky, terrifying like the roar of a frenzied Bhairava dancing at the end of the world age.

फिर उसने वायु अस्त्र छोड़ा, जिसने आकाश के पूरे खोखलेपन को भर दिया, और वह ऐसा भयानक था जैसे प्रलय के समय पागल होकर नाचते और दहाड़ते भैरव की गर्जना।

ववुरशनिनिपातपीडिताङ्गा दलितशिलाशकलाः ककुम्मुखेषु प्रलयसमयसूचका भटानां कृतपटुटांकृतटङ्किनः समीराः ॥ ८६ ॥

vavur aśaninipātapīḍitāṅgā dalitaśilāśakalāḥ kakummukheṣu pralayasamayasūcakā bhaṭānāṃ kṛtapaṭuṭāṃkṛtaṭaṅkinḥ samīrāḥ || 86 ||

Winds blew, their bodies battered by falling thunderbolts, scattering shattered rock fragments at the mouths of every direction, signaling the hour of universal dissolution, making sharp grinding sounds like warriors busily sharpening their weapons.

हवाएँ चलीं, बिजली गिरने से उनके अंग चोटिल हुए, टूटी हुई चट्टानों के टुकड़े हर दिशा के मुहानों पर बिखेरते हुए, प्रलय के समय का संकेत देते हुए, और ऐसी तीखी घिसाई जैसी आवाज़ करते हुए मानो योद्धा अपने हथियार तेज़ी से धार लगा रहे हों।
