13.54.1

śrīdevyuvāca | tasmādye vedya vettāro ye vā dharmaṃ paraṃ śritāḥ | ātivāhikalokāṃste prāpnuvantīha netare || 1 ||

Shri Devi said: So only those who truly know what is to be known, or who have taken shelter in the highest dharma, reach the worlds of the subtle carrier-body here in this life; no one else does.

ādhibhautikadehatvaṃ mithyābharamayātmakam | kathaṃ satye sthitiṃ yāti cchāyāste kathamātape || 2 ||

This physical body, made up entirely of a false delusion, how can it ever come to stand in truth? How can its shadow exist in sunlight?

līlā viditavedyā no paramaṃ dharmamāśritā | kevalaṃ tena sā bhartuḥ kalpitaṃ nagaraṃ gatā || 3 ||

Lila had not known what was to be known, and she had not taken shelter in the highest dharma. Only because of that, she went to the imagined city of her husband.

prabuddhalīlovāca | evameṣā prayātā'stu bhartā paśya mamāmbike | pravṛttaḥ prāṇasaṃtyāge kartavyaṃ kimihādhunā || 4 ||

The awakened Lila said: So be it, let her have gone. Mother, look - my husband has begun to give up his life-breath. What should be done now, here?

bhāvābhāveṣu bhāvānāṃ kathaṃ niyatirāgatā | kathaṃ bhūyo'pyaniyatirmṛtijanmādisūcitā || 5 ||

How has fixed order come about among things, in both their existing and their not existing? And how, again, is there also no fixed order at all, as shown by death, birth, and the rest?

kathaṃ svabhāvasaṃsiddhiḥ kathaṃ sattā padārthagā | kathamagnyādipūṣṇatvaṃ pṛthvyādau sthiratā katham || 6 ||

How does a thing's own nature get fixed? How does existence come to belong to things? How do fire and the rest get their power to heat? How is there steadiness in earth and the rest?

himādiṣu kathaṃ śaityaṃ kā sattā kālakhādiṣu | bhāvābhāvagrahotsargasthūlasūkṣmadṛśaḥ katham || 7 ||

How is there coldness in ice and the like? What reality is there in time and space and the rest? How does the seeing that grasps and lets go of the gross and the subtle, of what exists and what does not, come about?

kathamatyantamucchrāyaṃ tṛṇagulmanarādikam | vastu nāyātyaniṣṭe'pi sthite svocchrāyakāraṇe || 8 ||

Why do grass, shrubs, men, and such things not keep growing to an unlimited height, even when the cause of their own growth is still present, even when nothing there wants them to stop?

śrīdevyuvāca | mahāpralayasaṃpattau sarvārthāstamaye sati | anantākāśamāśāntaṃ sadbrahmaivāvatiṣṭhate || 9 ||

Shri Devi said: When the great dissolution comes, when everything has come to its end, only the real Brahman remains - endless like space, and completely at peace.

taccidrūpatayā tejaḥkaṇo'hamiti cetati | svapne saṃvidyathā hi tvamākāśagamanādi ca || 10 ||

That Brahman, being of the nature of pure consciousness, becomes aware as 'I am a spark of light' - just as in a dream, through consciousness alone, you experience flying through the sky and such things.

tejaḥkaṇo'sau sthūlatvamātmanātmani vindati | asatyameva satyābhaṃ brahmāṇḍaṃ tadidaṃ smṛtam || 11 ||

That spark of light finds grossness within itself, by itself. This is what is called the universe (Brahmanda) - it is unreal, yet it looks real.

tatrantarbrahma tadvetti brahmāyamahamityatha | manorājyaṃ sa kurute svātmaivaṃ tadidaṃ jagat || 12 ||

Within that, Brahman comes to know itself thus: 'I am this Brahman.' Then it creates a kingdom of thought out of its own self, and this world is that very thing.

tasminprathamataḥ sarge yā yathā yatra saṃvidaḥ | kacitāstāstathā tatra sthitā adyāpi niścalāḥ || 13 ||

In that first creation, whatever moments of awareness shone forth, in whatever way, in whatever place - they remain standing there in that very way, unmoving, even today.

yadyathā sphuriataṃ cittaṃ tattathā hyātmacidbhavet | svayamevāniyamatastattatsyānneha kiṃcana || 14 ||

Whatever way the mind stirs, in that very way the awareness of the self becomes; it becomes that by itself, with no fixed rule to it - nothing here is other than this.

na ca nāma nakiṃcittvaṃ yujyate viśvarūpiṇaḥ | tyaktvā samastasaṃsthānaṃ hema tiṣṭhati vai katham || 15 ||

And it does not make sense to say that the one whose form is the whole universe is nothing at all, a mere name. After all, when gold gives up every shape it was made into, does it not still remain gold?

sargādau svayamevāntaścidyathā kacitātmani | himāgnyāditayādyāpi sā tathāste svasattayā || 16 ||

At the start of creation, consciousness itself shone within, in itself, in whatever way it did; as ice, fire, and the rest, it still stands today, in that very same way, by its own being.

tasmātsvasattāsaṃtyāgaḥ sataḥ kartuṃ na yujyate | yadā cidāste teneyaṃ niyatirna vinaśyati || 17 ||

So it is not right for what truly exists to give up its own being. As long as consciousness remains, this fixed order does not perish.

yadyathā kacitaṃ yatra vyomarūpyapi pārthivam | sargādau tasya calitumadyayāvanna yujyate || 18 ||

Whatever shone forth, in whatever way, in whatever place - whether in the form of space or in the form of earth - since the beginning of creation, that has not been able to move, even to this day.

yā yathā citprakacitā pratipakṣavidaṃ vinā | na sā tataḥ pracalati vedanābhyāsataḥ svayam || 19 ||

Whatever way consciousness first shone forth, without knowing its opposite, it does not move away from that by itself - it stays fixed through the habit of that very experience.

jagadādāvanutpannaṃ yaccedamanubhūyate | tatsaṃvidvyomakacanaṃ svapnastrīsurataṃ yathā || 20 ||

What is experienced here as this world was never actually born at the start; it is only consciousness shining forth in space, like being with a woman in a dream.

asatyameva satyābhaṃ pratibhānamidaṃ sthitam| iti svabhāvasaṃpattiriti bhūtānubhūtayaḥ || 21 ||

This appearance stands as something unreal that merely looks real. This is the natural way things are, and this is what the experiences of created beings are.

sargādau yā yathā rūḍhā saṃvitkacanasantatiḥ| sādyāpyacalitānyena sthitā niyatirucyate || 22 ||

Whatever unbroken flow of shining consciousness became fixed at the start of creation, in whatever way - that, still standing unmoved by anything else even today, is called niyati, the fixed order.

gṛhītavyomasamvitticidvyoma vyomatāṃ gatam| gṛhītakālatāsaṃviccinnaṃbhaḥ kālatāṃ gatam || 23 ||

Consciousness-space, having taken hold of the awareness of space, turned into the state of being space. Consciousness-space, having taken hold of the awareness of time, turned into the state of being time.

gṛhītajalasaṃvitticidvyoma vārivatsthitam| svapne yathā hi puruṣaḥ paśyatyātmani vāritām || 24 ||

Consciousness-space, having taken hold of the awareness of water, stands there in the form of water - just as, in a dream, a man sees water within himself.

svapnacitsaṃvidābhāti bhavatyeṣā yathāsthitā| ciccāmatkāracāturyādasadetatsamūhate || 25 ||

This dream-like awareness shines forth and appears exactly as it stands; through the clever wonder-working of consciousness, this unreal thing gathers itself into a whole.

khattvaṃ jalatvamurvītvamagnivāyutvamapyasat | vetyantaḥ svapnasankalpadhyāneṣviva citiḥ svayam || 26 ||

Sky-ness, water-ness, earth-ness, and fire-and-wind-ness are all unreal, yet consciousness itself knows them from within, just as it knows things in a dream, in an imagined thought, or in meditation.

maraṇānantaraṃ karmaphalānubhavanakramam | sarvasandehaśāntyarthaṃ mṛtiśreyaskaraṃ śṛṇu || 27 ||

Now, to settle all your doubts, listen to the order in which a person experiences the fruit of his actions after death, and to what is good about death.

rūḍhādisarge niyatiryaikadvitricatuḥśatā | pūrvādiṣvāyuṣaḥ puṃsāṃ tasyā me niyatiṃ śṛṇu || 28 ||

In this present age and in the earlier ages, there was a fixed rule for how long a man lives - one hundred years, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred - through those earlier times. Listen from me to that fixed rule of lifespan.

deśakālakriyādravyaśuddhyāśuddhī svakarmaṇām | nyūnatve cādhikatve ca nṛṇāṃ kāraṇamāyuṣaḥ || 29 ||

Whether a man's actions are done at the right place, right time, in the right way, and with the right materials - or done impurely - that is what makes his lifespan shorter or longer.

svakarmadharme hrasati hasatyāyurnṛṇāmiha | vṛddhe vṛddhimupāyāti samameva bhavetsame || 30 ||

When a man's own right conduct declines, his lifespan here declines with it; when his conduct grows, his lifespan grows; when it stays the same, his lifespan stays the same.

bālamṛtyupradairbālo yuvā yauvanamṛtyudaiḥ | vṛddhamṛtyupradairvṛddhaḥ karmabhirmṛtimṛcchati || 31 ||

By the actions that bring death in childhood, a child dies in childhood; by the actions that bring death in youth, a young man dies in youth; by the actions that bring death in old age, an old man dies in old age - each one meets death through his own actions.

yo yathāśāstramārabdhaṃ svadharmanumatiṣṭhati | bhājanaṃ bhavati śrīmānsa yathāśāstramāyuṣaḥ || 32 ||

One who takes up and follows his own duty exactly as the scriptures prescribe becomes prosperous, and he becomes fit to live out the lifespan the scriptures promise.

evaṃ karmānusāreṇa janturantyāṃ daśāmitaḥ | bhavantyantaṃ gatavato dṛṅmarmacchedavedanāḥ || 33 ||

In this way, in keeping with his actions, a living being moves from here toward his final state; and for one who has reached that end, there come the pains of the vital points being cut, felt within.

prabuddhalīlovāca | maraṇaṃ me samāsena kathayendusamānane | kiṃ sukhaṃ maraṇaṃ kiṃ vā duḥkhaṃ mṛtvā ca kiṃ bhavet || 34 ||

The awakened Lila said: O moon-faced one, tell me briefly about death - is death pleasant, or is it painful, and what happens once a person has died?

śrīdevyuvāca | trividhāḥ puruṣāḥ santi dehasyānte mumūrṣavaḥ | mūrkho'tha dhāraṇābhyāsī yuktimānpuruṣastathā || 35 ||

The goddess said: There are three kinds of men who face death at the body's end - the fool, the one who has practiced concentration, and the man of wisdom.

abhyasya dhāraṇāniṣṭho dehaṃ tyaktvā yathāsukham | prayāti dhāraṇābhyāsī yuktiyuktastathaiva ca || 36 ||

The one who is settled in the practice of concentration leaves the body with ease and departs; and the man of wisdom departs in that same easy way.

But the man whose concentration was never practiced, and who is not wise either - that fool, when his own time to die comes, meets with suffering, his mind helpless and out of control.

vāsanāveśavaivaśyaṃ bhāvayanviṣayāśayaḥ | dīnatāṃ paramāmeti parilūnamivāmbujam || 38 ||

Overwhelmed and helpless in the grip of his own desires, his mind still fixed on the objects of the senses, he sinks into utter misery - like a lotus that has been cut and torn away.

393.54.39

aśāstrasaṃskṛtamatirasajjanaparāyaṇaḥ | mṛtāvanubhavatyantardāhamagnāviva cyutaḥ || 39 ||

A man whose mind has never been shaped by the scriptures, who has kept the company of bad people, feels a burning inside him at death - as if he had fallen into fire.

yadā ghargharakaṇṭhatvaṃ vairūpyaṃ dṛṣṭivarṇajam | gacchatyeṣo'vivekātmā tadā bhavati dīnadhīḥ || 40 ||

When this unwise man's throat begins to rattle, and his eyes and complexion turn ugly and changed, then his mind sinks into misery.

413.54.41

paramāndhyamanāloko divāpyuditatārakaḥ | sābhradigmaṇḍalābhogo ghanamecakitāmbaraḥ || 41 ||

He falls into utter blindness, sees no light; stars appear to him even in daytime; every direction seems wrapped in cloud, and the whole sky looks thick and dark.

423.54.42

marmavyathāvicchuritaḥ prabhramadṛṣṭimaṇḍalaḥ | ākāśībhūtavasudho vasudhābhūtakhāntaraḥ || 42 ||

Pierced through with pain at his vital points, his eyes whirling in their sockets, the earth seems to him to turn into sky, and the sky seems to turn into earth.

parivṛttakakupcakra uhyamāna ivārṇave | nīyamāna ivākāśe ghananidronmukhāśayaḥ || 43 ||

The circle of directions seems to spin around him; he feels as if he is being carried on the ocean, as if he is being swept through the sky, his mind turning toward a heavy sleep.

andhakūpa ivāpannaḥ śilāntariva yojitaḥ | svayaṃ jaḍībhavadvṛṇo vinikṛtta ivāśaye || 44 ||

He feels as if he has fallen into a dark, blind well, as if wedged between rocks; his own body's color turns dull and lifeless, and in his mind he feels as if he is being cut to pieces.

patatīva nabhomārgāttṛṇāvart iva arpitaḥ | rathe druta ivārūḍho hiṃmavadgalanonmukhaḥ || 45 ||

He feels as though he is falling from the path of the sky, as though caught up in a whirling dust storm, as though riding on a fast-running chariot, as though about to melt away like snow.

vyākurvanniva saṃsāraṃ bāndhavānasparśanniva | bhramitakṣepaṇeneva vātayantra ivāsthitaḥ || 46 ||

It is as if the whole world around him is being thrown into confusion, as if he cannot even touch his own family; as if he is being whirled and flung about, as if caught inside some machine spun by the wind.

bhramito vā bhrama iva kṛṣṭo rasanayeva vā | bhramanniva jalāvarte śastrayantra ivārpiṭaḥ || 47 ||

It is as if he is spun around like a spinning top, or dragged along by a rope; as if he is whirling in a whirlpool of water, as if he has been thrown inside some machine of blades.

prohyamānastṛṇamiva vahatparjanyamārute | āruhya vāripūreṇa nipatanniva cārṇave || 48 ||

It is as if he is swept along like a blade of straw in a wind heavy with storm clouds, as if he is riding a flood of water and falling into the ocean.

anantagagane śvabhre cakrāvarte patanniva | abdhirurvīviparyāsadaśāmanubhavansthitaḥ || 49 ||

As though falling endlessly through the sky, into a bottomless pit, into a whirling eddy, he stays there, feeling as if the ocean and the earth had changed places.

patannivānavarataṃ protpatanniva cābhitaḥ | sūtkārākaraṇodbhraṇtapūrṇasarvendriyavraṇaḥ || 50 ||

As though he keeps falling without stop, and keeps flying up on every side, hearing a hissing sound, all his senses turn into one confused wound.

kramācchayāmalatāṃ yānti tasya sarvākṣasaṃvidaḥ| yathāstaṃ gacchati ravau mandālokatayā diśaṃ || 51 ||

Little by little, all his awareness through the senses turns dark, the way the sky grows dim in every direction when the sun sets.

pūrvāparaṃ na jānāti smṛtistānavamāgatā| yathā pāścātyasaṃdhyānte naṣṭā dṛṣṭirdigaṣṭake || 52 ||

His memory grows so faint that he can no longer tell what came before from what comes after, like at the end of evening twilight, when sight is lost in every direction.

manaḥ kalpanasāmarthyaṃ tyajatyasya vimohataḥ| avivekena tenāsau mahāmohe nimajjati || 53 ||

Out of confusion, his mind loses the power to form thoughts; and because he can no longer tell one thing from another, he sinks into deep unconsciousness.

yadaivāmohamādatte nādatte pavanas tadā| natvādatte yadā prāṇānmohamāyātyalaṃ tadā || 54 ||

When fainting comes over him, the breath at that time stops moving; and when the breath does not draw in the life-airs, then he sinks fully into fainting.

anyonyapuṣṭatāṃ yātairmohasaṃvedanabhramaiḥ| jantuḥ pāṣāṇatāmeti sthitamityādisargataḥ || 55 ||

By delusion, awareness, and confusion, which feed on one another, the creature becomes like a stone, staying still like that from its very origin onward, and so on.

prabuddhalīlovāca | vyathāṃ vimohaṃ mūrcchāntaṃ bhramaṃ vyādhimacetanam | kimarthamayamāyāti deho hyaṣṭāṅgavānapi || 56 ||

Prabuddhalila said: why does this body, even though it is complete with all eight limbs, come to feel pain, confusion, the state that ends in fainting, bewilderment, sickness, and unconsciousness?

śrīdevyuvāca | evaṃ saṃvihitaṃ karma sargādau spandasaṃvidā | yadyasmin samaye duḥkhaṃ kālenaitāvatedṛśam || 57 ||

Sri Devi replied: this was arranged in this very way, at the start of creation, by consciousness in its very first stir, that at a certain time such and such suffering would come, for so long, in such a form.

syānme ityeva saṃviśya gulmavattatsvabhāvajam | vetti cittavijṛmbhotthaṃ nānyadatrāsti kāraṇam || 58 ||

Entering with the thought let this happen to me, it grows by itself, from its own nature, like a growth in the body; a person feels it as something rising up out of the mind's own stirring, there is no other cause for it here.

yadā vyathāvaśānnāḍyaḥ svasaṃkocavikāsanaiḥ | gṛhṇantimāruto dehe tadojjhati nijāṃ sthitim || 59 ||

When, because of pain, the body's channels grip the breath by squeezing and widening on their own, then the breath leaves its normal place.

praviṣṭā na viniryānti gatāḥ saṃpraviśanti no | yadā vātā vināḍītvāt tadā spandāt smṛtir bhavet || 60 ||

When the breaths that have entered do not go out, and those that have gone out do not enter again, because the channels no longer carry the winds, then memory comes only from a mere throb.

na viśatyeva vāto na niryāti pavano yadā | śarīranāḍīvaidhuryānmṛta ityucyate tadā || 61 ||

When the breath neither enters nor leaves, because the body's channels have failed, then he is said to be dead.

āgantavyo mayā nāśaḥ kālenaitāvateti yā | pūrvasaṃviditā saṃvidyāti taccoditā mṛtim || 62 ||

The knowledge already held from before, that my end will come after just this much time, that same knowledge, driven onward, itself leads to death.

īdṛśena mayehetthaṃ bhāvyamityādi sargajā | saṃvidvījakalā nāśaṃ na kadācana gacchati || 63 ||

This is how it must happen to me, such thoughts, born at the very start of creation, this seed-portion of awareness never perishes, not ever.

saṃvido vedanaṃ nāma svabhāvo'vyatirekavān | tasmātsvabhāvasaṃvitter nānye maraṇajanmanī || 64 ||

What we call feeling is simply consciousness's own nature, it is not separate from consciousness. So, apart from this very nature that is consciousness, birth and death are nothing else.

kvacidāvṛtimatsaumyaṃ kvacinnadyāṃ jalaṃ yathā | kvacitsaumyaṃ kvacijjīvadharmedaṃ cetanaṃ tathā || 65 ||

Just as water is, in one place, still and enclosed, and in another place flowing in a river, so this consciousness too is, in one place, calm, and in another place, has the nature of a living being.

yathā latāyāḥ parvāṇi dīrghāyā madhyamadhyataḥ | tathā cetanasattāyā janmāni maraṇāni ca || 66 ||

Just as a long vine has joints spaced along its middle length, in the same way births and deaths are the joints in the ongoing existence of consciousness.

na jāyate na mriyate cetanaḥ puruṣaḥ kvacit | svapnasambhramavadbhrāntametatpaśyati kevalam || 67 ||

The conscious self is never born and never dies, anywhere. He only sees this as a confusion, like the confusion of a dream.

puruṣaścetanāmātraṃ sa kadā kveva naśyati | cetanavyatiriktatve vadānyatkiṃ pumānbhavet || 68 ||

The self is nothing but consciousness itself; when and where could it ever perish? If it were something separate from consciousness, tell me, what else would this person be?

ko’dyayāvanmṛtaṃ brūhi cetanaṃ kasya kiṃ katham | mriyante dehalakṣāṇi cetanaṃ sthitamakṣayam || 69 ||

Tell me, who has ever really died, up to today? Whose consciousness, what consciousness, how did it die? It is only bodies, things marked out as bodies, that die; consciousness itself remains, undying.

amarṣyann na vai cittamekasminneva tanmṛte | abhaviṣyatsarvabhāvamṛtirekamṛtāviha || 70 ||

The mind does not die just because one person alone has died, for if it did, then a single death here would mean the death of every being.

vāsanāmātravaicitryaṃ yajjīvo'nubhavetsvayam| tasyaiva jīvamaraṇe nāmanī parikalpite || 71 ||

Whatever variety a living being experiences by itself is nothing but a play of its own mental impressions; and to that very thing we give the two names, life and death.

evaṃ na kaścinmriyate jāyate na ca kaścan| vāsanāvartagarteṣu jīvo luṭhati kevalam || 72 ||

So, in truth, no one dies, and no one is born; the living being merely tumbles about in the pits of its own mental impressions, as in a whirlpool.

atyantāsaṃbhavādeva dṛśyasyāsau ca vāsanā| nāstyeveti vicāreṇa dṛḍhajñātaiva naśyati || 73 ||

The world we see is completely impossible, so the tendency (vasana) behind it does not exist at all. When we look into this and firmly know that it does not exist, that very tendency is destroyed.

anuditamuditaṃ jagatprabandhaṃ bhavabhayato'bhyasanairvilokya samyak| alamanuditavāsanō hi jīvo bhavati vimukta itīha satyavastu || 74 ||

By practising again and again, out of fear of worldly life, one sees clearly that this ongoing world, though it seems to rise, never really rises. Then the tendencies stop rising in that person, and that living being truly becomes free. This alone is the real truth here.
