श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । नभःस्थलाद्गिरिग्रामं गच्छन्त्यौ कंचिदेव ते । ज्ञप्तिचित्तस्थितं भूमितलं ददृशतुः स्त्रियौ || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | nabhaḥsthalādgirigrāmaṃ gacchantyau kaṃcideva te | jñapticitasthitaṃ bhūmitalaṃ dadṛśatuḥ striyau || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: While traveling from the sky to a mountain village, two women saw the earth, which was established in their minds.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: आकाश से एक पर्वतीय गाँव की ओर जाते हुए, दो स्त्रियों ने उस भूमि को देखा जो उनके मन में स्थित थी।

English

The vast universe, like a lotus blooming from the heart of man, with eight directions as petals, filled with mountain peaks, and beautiful with the burden of its own joy.

English

In the middle of the river's flow, there is a drop of inevitable rest. It is bewildered by the night's bees and filled with a multitude of beings, like a swarm of insects.

English

Filled with internal qualities, adorned with beautiful caves, surrounded by hollows, carried by water-filled clouds, and radiant with the light of day.

आंतरिक गुणों से भरा हुआ, सुंदर गुफाओं से सजा हुआ, खोखलों से घिरा हुआ, पानी से भरे बादलों द्वारा उठाया जाता है, और दिन की रोशनी से चमकता है।

English

Juicy in the sky, wandering swan, recipient of the night's contraction, submerged in the mud of the underworld, the lord of serpents, a lotus fiber.

आकाश में रसीला, भटकता हंस, रात के संकोच का ग्राहक, पाताल की कीचड़ में डूबा हुआ, सर्पों का स्वामी, एक कमल का रेशा।

कदाचिदास्पदाम्भोधिकम्पकम्पितदिग्दलम् । अधोनालगतानन्तदैत्यदानवकण्टकम् || ६ ||

English

Sometimes, the directions are shaken by the tremors of the ocean of existence. Below the roots, there are thorns of endless demons and Danavas.

English

The demon, with the delicate enjoyment of the threefold desire, attains the great seed of the earth-bearer's heart with the seed of beings.

असुर, तीन प्रकार की इच्छाओं के सूक्ष्म आनंद के साथ, पृथ्वी-धारक के हृदय के महान बीज को प्राप्त करता है, जीवों के बीज के साथ।

जम्बूद्वीप इति ख्यातां विपुलां तत्र कर्णिकाम् । सरित्केसरिकानाला नगरग्रामकेसराम् || ८ ||

English

Jambudvipa is known to be vast, with its central part being the pericarp. It is adorned with rivers, lakes, cities, villages, and forests.

English

The beautiful seven-seeded peak of the supreme mountain, Kulashaila, is in the middle, with the great Meru seed occupying the sky.

सर्वोच्च पर्वत कुलशैल की सुंदर सात-बीज वाली चोटी मध्य में है, जिसमें महान मेरु बीज आकाश को घेरे हुए है।

English

The land is adorned with lakes filled with ice particles, forests and dust, and is surrounded by a network of people in various regions.

English

That land is surrounded by oceans of various substances, each extending to a hundred yojanas, and is guarded by the four directional elephants.

digdalāṣṭakaviśrāntasasurāmbhodhiṣaṭpadāmbhrātṛbhirnavabhirbhūpairnavadhā parikalpitām || 12 ||

English

This land is divided into nine parts by the nine kings, who are the brothers of the eight Vasus and the lord of the demons.

English

This land extends over a hundred thousand yojanas and is filled with various kingdoms and cities made of iron.

द्वीपात्तु द्विगुणं मानं लवणार्णवलेखयादधत्या वलितां बाह्ये प्रकोष्ठमिव कम्बुना || १४ ||

dvīpāttu dviguṇaṃ mānaṃ lavaṇārṇavalekhayādadhatyā valitāṃ bāhye prakoṣṭhamiva kambunā || 14 ||

English

The island is twice the size of the previous one, surrounded by an ocean of salt, resembling a belt around the waist.

यह द्वीप पिछले द्वीप के दोगुने आकार का है, जो नमक के समुद्र से घिरा हुआ है, जो कमर के चारों ओर एक पट्टी की तरह लगता है।

English

Beyond that, there is another island twice the size, resembling a ring, and covering the entire earth, known as Śākadvīpa.

Then, the one who holds twice the form, surrounded by the line of the island known as Kuśa, adorned with various kinds of people.

English

Then, surrounded by the line of the island known as Krauñca, measured in this way, like a new city of the king, adorned with pits.

English

Then, surrounded by the line of the ocean of ghee, measured in this way, and then by the line of the island known as Śālmali, filled with dirt.

Then, with the line of the great ocean of nectar, with the brightness of flowers, covering the entire body like the form of Hari.

Then, with the measure of the line of the Gomedaka island, and with the line of the sugarcane ocean, thus with the purity of the Himalayas.

Then, ten times more, with the excavation of the layer reaching the underworld, with the high heap of white clouds.

English

By the path leading to the netherworld, bent by its own terrifying nature, this is indeed greater than all others, rising tenfold in magnitude.

English

In the four directions of the sky, adorned with the splendor of white clouds, half-faded with the beauty of blue lotuses.

English

With various gem-crested peaks, shining with the radiance of lotuses and water lilies, and adorned with lofty, expansive garlands.

English

She is adorned with the three worlds' prosperity, like a wave of beauty. Therefore, she is ten times greater than everything else.

English

Adorned with the unknown movements of beings, like a forest of names. Therefore, she is ten times greater than everything else.

nabhaseva caturdikkaṃ vyāptāmatulavāriṇāetasmādeva sarvasmāttato daśaguṇātmanā || 30 ||

English

Like the sky, she pervades all four directions with her incomparable splendor. Therefore, she is ten times greater than everything else.

मेर्वादिद्रावणोत्केन ज्वालाजालेन मालितामेतस्मादथ सर्वस्मात्ततो दशगुणात्मना || ३१ ||

mervādidrāvaṇotkena jvālājālena mālitāmetasmādatha sarvasmāttato daśaguṇātmanā || 31 ||

English

The entire universe is adorned with a network of flames arising from the friction of Mount Meru and other mountains. From this, it is ten times more intense.

मेरु और अन्य पर्वतों के घर्षण से उत्पन्न ज्वालाओं के जाल से सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड सुशोभित है। इससे यह दस गुना अधिक तीव्र है।

मेर्वाद्यचलसङ्घातं नयता तृणपांसुवत्वहताद्रीन्द्रविस्फोटकारिणा जवहारिणा || ३२ ||

mervādyacalasaṅghātaṃ nayatā tṛṇapāṃsuvatvahatādrīndravisphoṭakāriṇā javahāriṇā || 32 ||

English

The collision of Mount Meru and other mountains causes them to be reduced to mere grass and dust. The intense speed and force shatter even the mightiest mountains.

मेरु और अन्य पर्वतों के टकराने से वे मात्र घास और धूल में परिणत हो जाते हैं। तीव्र गति और बल से सबसे शक्तिशाली पर्वतों को भी तोड़ देता है।

निःशून्यत्वादशब्देन मरुता परितो वृतमेतस्मादथ सर्वस्मात्ततो दशगुणात्मना || ३३ ||

niḥśūnyatvādaśabdena marutā parito vṛtametasmādatha sarvasmāttato daśaguṇātmanā || 33 ||

English

The wind, being devoid of emptiness, surrounds everything. From this, it is ten times more intense.

परितो वलितं व्योम्ना निःशून्येनैकरूपिणाथ योजनकोटीनां शतेन घनरूणिणाव्याप्तं ब्रह्माण्डकुड्येन हैमेनापि द्विपर्वणा || ३४ ||

parito valitaṃ vyomnā niḥśūnyenaikarūpiṇāatha yojanakoṭīnāṃ śatena ghanarūṇiṇāvyāptaṃ brahmāṇḍakuḍyena haimenāpi dviparvaṇā || 34 ||

English

The universe is surrounded by the sky, which is devoid of emptiness and uniform. It is pervaded by a dense golden wall extending a hundred crore yojanas, with two wings.

English

Thus, seeing the vast universe surrounded by oceans, great mountains, guardians of the world, cities of the gods, the sky, and the earth, the human being saw his own humble abode on the earth.
