13.57.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca tato dadṛśatus tatra śavaśayyai kapārśvagām līlāṃ vidūrathasyāgre mṛtāṃ te prathamāgatām || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Then the two of them, who had come first, saw Lila lying dead beside the funeral bed, in front of Vidūratha.

prāgveṣāṃ prāk samācārāṃ prāg dehāṃ prāk savāsanām prāktanākāra sadṛśīṃ sarva rūpāṅga sundarīm || 2 ||

She had her old clothes, her old manner, her old body, her old desires still with her; she looked just like her earlier form, beautiful in every limb and every part.

prāg rūpāvayava spandāṃ prāg ambaram parīvṛtām prāg bhūṣaṇa bhara channāṃ kevalaṃ tatra saṃsthitām || 3 ||

Her limbs still had the shape and look they had before, she was still covered in her old clothes, still covered under the weight of her old ornaments — she was simply lying there.

gṛhīta cāmarāṃ cāru vījayantīṃ mahīpatim udyac candrām iva divaṃ bhūṣayantīṃ mahītalam || 4 ||

Holding a fly-whisk, she fanned the king beautifully, like a rising moon adorning the sky, adorning the whole earth.

mauna sthāṃ vāma hasta stha vadanendu tayā natām bhūṣaṇāṃśu lata puṣpaiḥ phullām iva vanasthalīm || 5 ||

She stayed silent, her moon-like face resting bowed on her left hand, blossoming like a forest with the flower-like glow of her ornaments.

kurvāṇāṃ vīkṣitairdikṣu mālatyutpalavarṣaṇam | sṛjantīmātmalāvaṇyādinduminduṃ nabhoditam || 6 ||

With her glances she showered jasmine and blue lotus flowers in every direction, and out of her own beauty she made a moon, a moon risen in the sky.

narapālātmano viṣṇorlakṣmīmiva samāgatām | uditāṃ puṣpasaṃbhārādiva puṣpākaraśriyam || 7 ||

She had come to the king, who was like Vishnu, as Lakshmi comes to him; she had risen like the beauty of spring rising out of a mass of flowers.

bharturvadanake nyastadṛṣṭimiṣṭaviceṣṭitām | kiṃcitpramlānavadanāṃ mlānacandrāṃ niśāmiva || 8 ||

Her eyes were fixed on her husband's face, her every movement was pleasing, and her face had faded a little, like a night with a pale moon.

The two of them saw that woman, but she did not notice the two of them — because for those two, whose will was always true, she had not yet appeared to them in that way.

śrīrāma uvāca | tasminpradeśe sā pūrvalīlā saṃsthāpya dehakam | dhyānena jñaptisahitā gatābhūditi varṇitam || 10 ||

Sri Rama said: It has been told that in that place, the earlier Lila set her body down there and, through meditation, went away along with her awareness.

kimidānīṃ sa līlāyā dehastatra na varṇitaḥkiṃsaṃpannaḥ kva vā yāta iti me kathaya prabho || 11 ||

Then why has that body of Lila not been described further — what happened to it, or where did it go? Tell me this, lord.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācakvāsīllīlāśarīraṃ tatkutastasyāsti satyatākevalā bhrāntirevābhūjjalabuddhirmarāviva || 12 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Where indeed was Lila's body, and how could it have any real existence at all? It was nothing but a mistake, like seeing water in a mirage.

ātmaivedaṃ jagatsarvaṃ kuto dehādikalpanābrahmai'vānandarūpaṃ sadyatpaśyasi tadeva cit || 13 ||

This whole world is nothing but the Self; so how can there be any idea of a body and such things? What you see as existing, full of bliss, is Brahman itself — that alone is consciousness.

yathaiva bodhe līlāsau pariṇāmamitā kramātpare tathaiva tasmāttaddhimavadgalitaṃ vapuḥ || 14 ||

Just as, on gaining knowledge, that Lila step by step turned and merged into the Supreme, in the very same way her body, because of that, melted away like ice.

ātivāhikadehena dṛśyaṃ yadavalokitambhūmyādi nāma tasyaiva kṛtaṃ taccādhibhautikam || 15 ||

Whatever was seen by that carrying-over subtle body — the earth and everything else that goes by that name — was made by that very body, and that is what is called the world of matter.

vāstavena tu rūpeṇa bhūmyādyātmādhibhautikaḥ | na śabdena na cārthena satyātmā śaśaśṛṅgavat || 16 ||

But in real, actual form, the earth and the rest, this world made of matter, is not true — not as a word and not as a thing; it is real like the horn on a hare's head.

pumso hariṇako'smīti svapne yasyoditā matiḥ | sa kimanviṣyati mṛgaṃ svamṛgatvaparikṣaye || 17 ||

When a man's mind, in a dream, forms the thought "I am a deer" — once his being a deer has ended, on waking, does he go looking for that deer?

udetyasatyamevāśu tathā satyaṃ vilīyate | bhrāntirbhramavato rajvāmapi sarpabhrame gate || 18 ||

The unreal rises up quickly, and just as quickly what seemed real dissolves — this is the confusion of a confused person, just like the illusion of a snake in a rope, once that illusion is gone.

samastasyāprabuddhasya manojātasya kasyacit | bījaṃ vinā mṛṣaiveyaṃ mithyārūḍhimupāgatā || 19 ||

For anyone whose mind is not yet awake, this whole thing, though it has no real cause at all, has, just by being false, become firmly fixed as if it were true.

svapnopalambhaṃ sargākhyaṃ sa sarvo'nubhavansthitaḥ | ciramāvṛttadehātmā bhūcakrabhramaṇaṃ yathā || 20 ||

Everyone stays there experiencing this thing called creation the way one experiences a dream, holding on to a body that returns again and again for a long time, like the turning of a wheel.

śrīrāma uvācabrahmaṃllokaiḥ purasthasya gacchato yogino nijamātivāhikatāṃ dehaḥ kīdṛśo'yaṃ vilokyate || 21 ||

Sri Rama said: O Brahmin, when a yogi who is present in a city goes off to other worlds, what does this carrying-over body of his look like — how is it seen?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācadehāddehāntaraprāptiḥ pūrvadehaṃ vinā sadāātivāhikadehe'sminsvapneṣviva vinaśvarī || 22 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Going from one body to another body always happens without the earlier body, in this carrying-over body — and it is as perishable as things in a dream.

yathātape himakaṇaḥ śaradvyomni sito'mbudaḥdṛśyamāno'pyadṛśyatvamityevaṃ yogidehakaḥ || 23 ||

Just as a snowflake vanishes in the sunlight, or a white cloud in the autumn sky, even while being seen, becomes unseen — in the same way is the yogi's body.

drāgityevāthavā kaścidyogideho na lakṣyateyogibhiśca puro vegātproḍḍīna iva khe khagaḥ || 24 ||

Or else, in an instant, some yogi's body is not seen at all, even by other yogis, going off swiftly ahead like a bird flying up into the sky.

svavāsanābhrameṇaiva kvacitkecitkadācanamṛto'yamiti paśyanti kecidyoginamagragāḥ || 25 ||

It is only through confusion caused by their own old mental habits that sometimes, at some time, in some place, people standing before the yogi see him as dead.

bhrāntimātraṃ tu dehātmā teṣāṃ tadupaśāmyati | satyabodhena rajjūnāṃ sarpa-buddhirivātmani || 26 ||

But this idea that the body is the self is nothing but a delusion for them, and it goes away when true understanding dawns - just as the idea of a snake in a rope disappears once a person knows the truth.

ko dehaḥ kasya vā sattā kasya nāśaḥ kathaṃ kutaḥ | sthitaṃ tadeva yadabhūdabodhaḥ kevalaṃ gataḥ || 27 ||

Then what is the body? Whose existence is it, and whose destruction - how, and from where? What remains is only what always was; it is just the ignorance that has gone.

śrīrāma uvāca | ātivāhikatāmeti ādhibhautika eva kim | utānya iti me brūhi yenohya iva bhoḥ prabho || 28 ||

Rama said: Does it become the subtle body that carries the soul onward, or does it stay only as the gross physical body? Or is it something else? Tell me this, lord, so that I may grasp it.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | bahuśo hyuktametatte na gṛhṇāsi kimuttama | ātivāhika evāsti nāstyevehādhibhautikaḥ || 29 ||

Vasishtha said: This has been told to you many times, best of men - why don't you grasp it? Only the subtle carrying body exists; the gross physical body does not exist at all.

tasyaivābhyasato'pyeti sādhibhautikatāmatiḥ | yadā śāmyati saivāsya tadā pūrvā pravartate || 30 ||

Even when someone keeps practicing this understanding, their mind still returns to the sense of having a physical body. But when this false idea settles down, their earlier true state comes forward again.

tadā gurutvaṃ kāṭhinynamiti yaśca mudhā grahaḥ| śāmyetsvapnanarasyeva boddhurbodhānnirāmayāt || 31 ||

Then the false hold of ideas like heaviness and hardness settles down - just as a dreaming man's dream body vanishes the moment he, the dreamer, wakes into a sound, healthy waking state.

laghutūlasamāpattistataḥ samupajāyate| svapne svapnaparijñānādiva dehasya yoginaḥ || 32 ||

From this, the yogi's body comes to feel as light as cotton-fluff - just as in a dream, when the dreamer realizes within the dream itself that it is only a dream, the body in that dream becomes light.

svapne svapnaparijñānādyathā deho laghurbhavet| tathā bodhādayaṃ dehaḥ sthūlavatplutimānbhavet || 33 ||

Just as in a dream the body becomes light once the dreamer recognizes it as a dream, in the same way, through this understanding, this body - though it looks solid - becomes able to leap and float.

anekadinasankalpadehe pariṇatātmanām| asmindhehe śave dagdhe tatraivāsthitimīyuṣām || 34 ||

For those whose minds have turned into a body shaped by an idea held firmly for many days, this happens even while their old body lies burned as a corpse - they remain settled right there, in that new body.

laghudehānubhavanamavaśyaṃ bhāvi vai tathā| prabodhātiśayādeti jīvatāmapi yoginām || 35 ||

In this same way, the experience of a light body is bound to come, even to yogis who are still alive, through the fullness of their awakened understanding.

uditāyāṃ smṛtau tatra saṃkalpātmāhamityalamyādṛśaḥ sa bhaveddehastādṛśo'yaṃ prabodhataḥ || 36 ||

When the memory 'I am made of this very idea' rises up fully within, then this body becomes exactly of the kind that the imagined self would have - through that awakening.

bhrāntirevamiyaṃ bhāti rajjvāmiva bhujaṅgatākiṃ naṣṭamasyāṃ naṣṭāyāṃ jātāyāṃ kiṃ prajāyate || 37 ||

This is how this whole thing appears to be nothing but a delusion, like a snake seen in a rope. When it is destroyed, what is really destroyed? And when it arises, what is really produced?

śrīrāma uvācaanantara ye vāstavyā līlāṃ paśyanti te yaditatsatyasaṃkalpatayā budhyante kimataḥ prabho || 38 ||

Rama said: Then, lord, the people who live nearby see this display - if they come to understand it as real through the power of true intention, what follows from that?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaevaṃ jñāsyanti te rājñī sthiteyamiha duḥkhitāvayasyā kācidanyeyaṃ kuto'pyasyā upāgatā || 39 ||

Vasishtha said: This is how they will come to understand it: 'Here stands this queen, grieving; some other companion of hers has come to her from somewhere.'

saṃdehaḥ ka ivātraiṣāṃ paśavo hyavivekinaḥyathādṛṣṭaṃ viceṣṭante kuta eṣāṃ vicāraṇā || 40 ||

What doubt could such people even have here? They are like animals, without any power to think things through; they only act on what they see - where would their reflection come from?

sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāve kila kīdṛśī | saṃvitsvapnapadārthānāṃ dvitā svapne nirarthikā || 41 ||

When the supporting, cooperating causes are missing, what kind of duality could really exist? The duality between consciousness and the things of a dream, within that dream, has no real meaning at all.

yathā svapnavapurbodhānna jāne kveva gacchati | asatyameva tadyasmāttathaivehādhibhautikam || 42 ||

Just as, on waking, I do not know where my dream-body has gone - because it was never real to begin with - in exactly the same way, this physical body here in the waking world is also unreal.

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavansvapnaśikhari prabodhe kveva gacchati | iti me saṃśayaṃ chindhi śaradabhramivānilaḥ || 43 ||

Rama said: Lord, where does a mountain seen in a dream go once a person wakes up? Cut through this doubt of mine, the way the wind clears away an autumn cloud.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | svapnabhrame'tha saṃkalpe padārthāḥ parvatādayaḥ | saṃvido'ntarmilantyete spandanānyanile yathā || 44 ||

Vasishtha said: In the confusion of a dream, or in mere imagination, the things one sees - mountains and so on - merge back into consciousness itself, just as movements merge back into still air.

aspandasya yathā vāyoḥ saspando'ntarviśatyalam | ananyātmā tathaivāyaṃ svapnārthaḥ saṃvido malam || 45 ||

Just as the moving air merges fully back into the still air, being nothing different from it, in the same way this dream-object, being nothing different from consciousness, is only a kind of stain on consciousness.

svapnādyarthāvabhāsena saṃvideva sphuratyalaṃ| asphurantī tu tenaiva yātyekatvaṃ tadātmikā || 46 ||

It is consciousness alone that shines forth fully as the appearance of dream-objects and the like; and when it does not shine forth in this way, being of that very same nature, it remains one with itself, through that very absence of shining.

saṃvitsvapnārthayordvitvaṃ na kadācana labhyate| yathā dravatvapayasoryathā vā spandavātayoḥ || 47 ||

The duality between consciousness and the dream-object is never actually found - just as there is no duality between water and its fluidity, or between wind and its motion.

483.57.48

yastatra syādivābodhas tadajñānamanuttamam| saiṣāsaṃsṛtirit yuktā mithyājñānātmikoditā || 48 ||

Whatever seems there to be a lack of understanding is nothing but ignorance, and nothing is higher than that. This alone is called samsara, the round of worldly existence - said to arise made entirely of false knowledge.

yathā svapnastathā jāgradidaṃ nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ| svapne puramasadbhāti sargādau bhātyasajjagat || 50 ||

This waking world is just like a dream - there is no doubt about it. In a dream, a city that does not really exist appears; in the same way, at the start of creation, a world that does not really exist appears.

na cārtho bhavituṃ śakyaḥ satyatve svapnatoditaḥ| saṃvido nityasatyatvaṃ svapnārthānāmasatyatā || 51 ||

And a thing that has arisen out of a dream can never become real. Only consciousness is eternally real - the things seen in a dream are unreal.

jhaṭityeva yathākāśaṃ bhavati svapnaparvataḥ | krameṇa vā tathā bodhe khaṃ bhavatyādhibhautikam || 52 ||

Just as a dream mountain appears out of empty space, either suddenly or little by little, in the same way this physical world made of the elements appears within awareness, either suddenly or little by little.

uḍḍīno'yaṃ mṛto veti paśyanti nikaṭasthitāḥ | jñamātivāhikībhūtaṃ svasvabhāvahatā yataḥ || 53 ||

The people standing close by look at him and think he has flown away, or that he has died - this happens because the knowing self has simply turned into the subtle body that carries it onward, while they themselves are cut off from their own true nature.

mithyādṛṣṭaya eva imāḥ sṛṣṭayo mohadṛṣṭayaḥ | māyāmātradṛśo bhrāntiḥ śūnyāḥ svapnānubhūtayaḥ || 54 ||

These created worlds are nothing but false views, ways of seeing born from delusion. They are mere appearances of illusion, a mistake, empty - like the things experienced in a dream.

svapnānubhūtaya imā maraṇāntabodhe bhrāntyetarabhramadṛśaḥ sphuṭasargabhāsaḥ | bhāntyātivāhikasharīragatāḥ samastā mithyoditā mṛganadīsaraṇakrameṇa || 55 ||

These are dream-like experiences that appear in the awareness right at the moment of death - visions of confusion, not the ordinary kind, that show up as clear, vivid worlds. All of them arise within the subtle body that carries the soul onward, and they rise up falsely, the same way a deer runs toward a mirage taking it for a river.
