śrīvasiṣṭha uvācabhūtalāpsarasā sārdhamananyadayitāpatiḥakṛtrimapremarasaṃ sa reme kāntayā tayā || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: He was devoted to no one but her, and with that earthly nymph as his beloved, he enjoyed true, unfeigned love with her.
वसिष्ठ जी ने कहा, वह राजा किसी और स्त्री को नहीं चाहता था, और उस धरती की अप्सरा जैसी अपनी प्रिया के साथ वह सच्चे और निश्छल प्रेम में डूबकर आनंद लेता था।
उद्यानवनगुल्मेषु तमालगहनेषु चपुष्पमण्डपरम्येषु लतावलयसद्मसु || २ ||
udyānavanagulmeṣu tamālagahaneṣu capuṣpamaṇḍaparamyeṣu latāvalayasadmasu || 2 ||
In garden groves and thickets of bushes, in dense tamala woods, in bowers lovely with flowers, and in houses ringed round with vines.
वे बगीचों और झाड़ियों में, घने तमाल के जंगलों में, फूलों से सुंदर मंडपों में, और लताओं से घिरे घरों में साथ रहते थे।
पुष्पान्तःपुरशय्यासु पुष्पसंभारवीथिषुवसन्तोद्यानदोलासु क्रीडापुष्करिणीषु च || ३ ||
puṣpāntaḥpuraśayyāsu puṣpasaṃbhāravīthiṣuvasantodyānadolāsu krīḍāpuṣkariṇīṣu ca || 3 ||
On flower-strewn beds inside flower-chambers, on paths heaped with flowers, on swings in spring gardens, and in pools kept for play.
फूलों से सजी सेजों पर, फूलों से भरे रास्तों पर, बसंत के बगीचों के झूलों पर, और खेलने के लिए बने तालाबों में वे आनंद लेते थे।
चन्दनद्रुमशैलेषु संतानकतलेषु चकदम्बनीपगेहेषु पारिभद्रोदरेषु च || ४ ||
candanadrumaśaileṣu saṃtānakataleṣu cakadambanīpageheṣu pāribhadrodareṣu ca || 4 ||
On hills covered with sandalwood trees, under coral trees, in bowers of kadamba and nipa trees, and among paribhadra trees.
चंदन के पेड़ों वाली पहाड़ियों पर, संतानक के पेड़ों के नीचे, कदंब और नीप के पेड़ों की छाया में, और पारिभद्र के पेड़ों के बीच वे रहते थे।
विकसत्कुन्दमन्दारमकरन्दसुगन्धिषुवसन्तवनजालेषु कूजत्कोकिलपक्षिषु || ५ ||
vikasatkundamandāramakarandasugandhiṣuvasantavanajāleṣu kūjatkokilapakṣiṣu || 5 ||
In spring woods fragrant with the nectar of blooming jasmine and mandara flowers, where cuckoos sang.
बसंत के जंगलों में, जहाँ खिले हुए मल्लिका और मंदार फूलों की खुशबू फैली रहती थी और कोयलें कूकती थीं, वे साथ रहते थे।
नानारण्यतृणानां च स्थलेषु मृदुदीप्तिषुनिर्झरेषु तरत्तारसीकरासारवर्षिषु || ६ ||
nānāraṇyatṛṇānāṃ ca sthaleṣu mṛdudīptiṣunirjhareṣu tarattārasīkarāsāravarṣiṣu || 6 ||
On soft, glowing patches of ground covered with many kinds of wild grass, by waterfalls that rained down showers of fine, sparkling spray.
तरह-तरह की जंगली घास से ढकी नरम और चमकती जमीन पर, और झरनों के पास जहाँ बारीक, चमकती फुहारें बरसती थीं, वे साथ रहते थे।
शैलानां मणिमाणिक्यशिलानां फलकेषु चदेवर्षिमुनिगेहेषु दूरपुण्याश्रमेषु च || ७ ||
śailānāṃ maṇimāṇikyaśilānāṃ phalakeṣu cadevarṣimunigeheṣu dūrapuṇyāśrameṣu ca || 7 ||
On flat rocks of mountains set with gems and rubies, in the homes of divine sages and hermits, and in far-off holy hermitages.
पहाड़ों की उन चट्टानों पर जो रत्नों और माणिक्यों से जड़ी थीं, देवऋषियों और मुनियों के आश्रमों में, और दूर के पवित्र आश्रमों में वे साथ रहते थे।
कुमुद्वतीषु फुल्लासु स्मेरासु नलिनीषु चवनस्थलीषु कृष्णासु फुल्लासु फलिनीषु च || ८ ||
kumudvatīṣu phullāsu smerāsu nalinīṣu cavanasthalīṣu kṛṣṇāsu phullāsu phalinīṣu ca || 8 ||
Among lakes blooming and smiling with lotuses and water-lilies, and in dark forest groves rich with blossoms and fruit.
खिले हुए, मुस्कुराते कमलों और कुमुदिनियों से भरे तालाबों के बीच, और फूलों तथा फलों से भरे घने जंगली स्थानों में वे साथ रहते थे।
सुरतैः सुरतारुण्यैः सुन्दरः सुन्दरेहितैःईहितैः पेशलान्योन्यघनप्रेमरसाधिकैः || ९ ||
surataiḥ suratāruṇyaiḥ sundaraḥ sundarehitaiḥīhitaiḥ peśalānyonyaghanapremarasādhikaiḥ || 9 ||
The handsome king delighted in acts of love, in the youthful passion of love, in beautiful desires, and in tender, deep, mutual outpourings of loving feeling.
वह सुंदर राजा प्रेम की क्रीड़ाओं में, प्रेम के जवान उल्लास में, सुंदर इच्छाओं में, और आपस के कोमल, गहरे प्रेम-भाव में डूबा रहता था।
प्रहेलिकाभिराख्यानैस्तथा चाक्षरमुष्टिभिःअष्टापदैर्बहुद्यूतैस्तथा गूढचतुर्थकैः || १० ||
prahelikābhirākhyānaistathā cākṣaramuṣṭibhiḥaṣṭāpadairbahudyūtaistathā gūḍhacaturthakaiḥ || 10 ||
With riddles and stories, with games of guessing letters, with dice played on the eight-square board and many kinds of gambling, and with hidden word-guessing games.
वे पहेलियों और कहानियों से, अक्षर पहचानने के खेलों से, अष्टापद पर खेली जाने वाली पासों की कई तरह की बाजियों से, और छिपे हुए शब्दों को खोजने के खेलों से मन बहलाते थे।
नाटिकाख्यायिकाभिश्च श्लोकैर्विन्दुमतिक्रमैःदेशकालविभागैश्च नगरग्रामचेष्टितैः || ११ ||
nāṭikākhyāyikābhiśca ślokairvindumatikramaiḥdeśakālavibhāgaiśca nagaragrāmaceṣṭitaiḥ || 11 ||
With little plays and stories, with verses twisted with tricky dots, with talk of different lands and times, and with tales of the doings of cities and villages.
छोटे नाटकों और कहानियों से, चतुराई भरे बिंदुओं वाले श्लोकों से, अलग-अलग जगहों और समय की बातों से, और शहर तथा गाँव की घटनाओं की चर्चा से वे मन बहलाते थे।
स्रग्दाममालावलितैर्नानाभरणयोजनैःलीलाविलोलचलनैर्विचित्ररसभोजनैः || १२ ||
sragdāmamālāvalitairnānābharaṇayojanaiḥlīlāvilolacalanairvicitrarasabhojanaiḥ || 12 ||
With garlands and strings of flowers wound together, with the putting on of many kinds of ornaments, with playful, swaying movements, and with meals of varied flavors.
गूँथी हुई मालाओं और फूलों की लड़ियों से, तरह-तरह के गहने पहनने से, चंचल और मस्त चाल से, और तरह-तरह के स्वाद वाले भोजन से वे आनंद लेते थे।
आर्द्रकुङ्कुमकर्पूरताम्बूलीदलचर्वणैःफुल्लपुष्पलतागुञ्जादेहगोपनकव्रणैः || १३ ||
ārdrakuṅkumakarpūratāmbūlīdalacarvaṇaiḥphullapuṣpalatāguñjādehagopanakhavraṇaiḥ || 13 ||
With the chewing of betel leaves along with moist saffron and camphor, and with hiding the marks of nails on the body under blooming flowering vines.
गीले केसर और कपूर के साथ पान के पत्ते चबाने से, और शरीर पर बने नाखूनों के निशानों को खिली हुई फूलों की लताओं के नीचे छिपाने से वे आनंद लेते थे।
समालम्भनलीलाभिर्मालाप्रहरणक्रमैःगृहे कुसुमदोलाभिरन्योन्यं दोलनक्रमैः || १४ ||
samālambhanalīlābhirmālāpraharaṇakramaiḥgṛhe kusumadolābhiranyonyaṃ dolanakramaiḥ || 14 ||
With playful anointing of the body, with mock-fights of throwing garlands at each other, and at home, with swinging each other on flower-swings, one after another.
शरीर पर सुगंधित लेप लगाने के खेलों से, एक-दूसरे पर माला फेंकने के खेल से, और घर में एक-दूसरे को फूलों के झूलों पर बारी-बारी झुलाने से वे आनंद लेते थे।
नौयानयुग्महस्त्यश्वदान्तोष्ट्रादिगमागमैःजलकेलिविलासेन परस्परसमुक्षणैः || १५ ||
nauyānayugmahastyaśvadāntoṣṭrādigamāgamaiḥjalakelivilāsena parasparasamukṣaṇaiḥ || 15 ||
With journeys to and fro in pairs of boats, on tamed elephants, horses and camels and the like, and with water games, splashing each other.
नावों की जोड़ियों में, सधे हुए हाथियों, घोड़ों और ऊँटों पर आने-जाने से, और पानी में एक-दूसरे पर पानी उछालकर खेलने से वे आनंद लेते थे।
नृत्यगीतकलालास्यतालताण्डवमण्डनैःसंगीतकैः संकथनैर्वीणामुरजवादनैः || १६ ||
nṛtyagītakalālāsyatālatāṇḍavamaṇḍanaiḥsaṃgītakaiḥ saṃkathanairvīṇāmurajavādanaiḥ || 16 ||
With the arts of dance and song, graceful dancing, and vigorous rhythmic dance as adornment, with music gatherings, with conversation, and with playing the vina and the drum.
नाच-गाने की कलाओं से, कोमल नृत्य और तेज़ लयबद्ध नृत्य के श्रृंगार से, संगीत की सभाओं से, बातचीत से, और वीणा तथा मृदंग बजाने से वे आनंद लेते थे।
उद्यानेषु सरित्तीरवृक्षेषु वरवीथिषुअन्तःपुरेषु हर्म्येषु फुल्लदोलावदोलनैः || १७ ||
udyāneṣu sarittīravṛkṣeṣu varavīthiṣuantaḥpureṣu harmyeṣu phulladolāvadolanaiḥ || 17 ||
In gardens, under trees on riverbanks, on fine avenues, in inner chambers and in palaces, with swinging again and again on flowering swings.
बगीचों में, नदी के किनारे पेड़ों के नीचे, सुंदर गलियों में, अंतःपुर में और महलों में, फूलों से सजे झूलों पर बार-बार झूलते हुए वे आनंद लेते थे।
सा तथा सुखसंवृद्धा तस्य प्रणयिनी प्रियाएकदा चिन्तयामास सुभ्रूः संकल्पशालिनी || १८ ||
sā tathā sukhasaṃvṛddhā tasya praṇayinī priyāekadā cintayāmāsa subhrūḥ saṃkalpaśālinī || 18 ||
She, his loving beloved, having grown full with happiness in this way, one day, that fair-browed woman, rich in resolve, began to think.
इस तरह सुख से भरी हुई उसकी प्रिय पत्नी ने, जो सुंदर भौंहों वाली और दृढ़ संकल्प वाली थी, एक दिन सोचना शुरू किया।
प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियो भर्ता ममैष जगतीपतिःयौवनोल्लासवान्श्रीमान्कथं स्यादजरामरः || १९ ||
prāṇebhyo'pi priyo bhartā mamaiṣa jagatīpatiḥyauvanollāsavānśrīmānkathaṃ syādajarāmaraḥ || 19 ||
"This husband of mine, dearer to me than life, lord of the earth, full of the joy of youth and glorious -- how might he become free from old age and death?"
मेरे ये पति, जो मुझे मेरे प्राणों से भी प्यारे हैं, पृथ्वी के राजा हैं, जवानी के उल्लास और तेज से भरे हैं, ये बुढ़ापे और मौत से मुक्त कैसे हो सकते हैं।
भर्त्रानेन सहोत्तुङ्गस्तनी कुसुमसद्मसुकथं स्वैरं चिरं कान्ता रमे युगशतान्यहम् || २० ||
bhartrānena sahottuṅgastanī kusumasadmasukathaṃ svairaṃ ciraṃ kāntā rame yugaśatānyaham || 20 ||
"How, as his beloved, might I freely enjoy myself with this husband in flower-bowers for a long time, for hundreds of ages?"
मैं अपने इस पति के साथ फूलों के मंडपों में स्वतंत्र होकर लंबे समय तक, सैकड़ों युगों तक, कैसे सुख भोग सकूँ।
तथा यते यत्नमतस्तपोजपयमेहितैःरजनीशमुखो राजा यथा स्यादजरामरः || २१ ||
tathā yate yatnamatastapojapayamehitaiḥrajanīśamukho rājā yathā syādajarāmaraḥ || 21 ||
"So let effort be made, through austerity, chanting, and vows, so that the king, moon-faced, may become free from old age and death."
इसलिए ऐसा प्रयास किया जाए, तपस्या, जप और व्रतों से, कि चाँद जैसे मुखवाले ये राजा बुढ़ापे और मौत से मुक्त हो जाएँ।
ज्ञानवृद्धांस्तपोवृद्धान्विद्यावृद्धानहं द्विजान्पृच्छामि तावन्मरणं कथं न स्यान्नृणामिति || २२ ||
jñānavṛddhāṃstapovṛddhānvidyāvṛddhānahaṃ dvijānpṛcchāmi tāvanmaraṇaṃ kathaṃ na syānnṛṇāmiti || 22 ||
"I will ask the brahmins who are advanced in wisdom, advanced in austerity, and advanced in learning, how death might never come to human beings."
मैं ज्ञान में बड़े, तपस्या में बड़े और विद्या में बड़े ब्राह्मणों से पूछूँगी कि मनुष्यों को मौत कैसे न आए।
इत्यानीयाथ संपूज्य द्विजान्पप्रच्छ सा नतामरत्वं कथं विप्रा भवेदिति पुनःपुनः || २३ ||
ityānīyātha saṃpūjya dvijānpapraccha sā natāamaratvaṃ kathaṃ viprā bhavediti punaḥpunaḥ || 23 ||
So she brought the brahmins, honored them, and bowing before them, asked again and again, "Brahmins, how can immortality come about?"
फिर उसने ब्राह्मणों को बुलाकर उनका सम्मान किया, और झुककर बार-बार पूछा, हे ब्राह्मणो, अमरता कैसे मिल सकती है।
विप्रा ऊचुःतपोजपयमैर्देवि समस्ताः सिद्धसिद्धयःसंप्राप्यन्तेऽमरत्वं तु न कदाचन लभ्यते || २४ ||
viprā ūcuḥtapojapayamairdevi samastāḥ siddhasiddhayaḥsaṃprāpyante'maratvaṃ tu na kadācana labhyate || 24 ||
The brahmins said: "O queen, all attainments and accomplishments can be gained through austerity, chanting, and vows -- but immortality is never obtained."
ब्राह्मणों ने कहा, हे रानी, तपस्या, जप और व्रतों से सारी सिद्धियाँ पाई जा सकती हैं, पर अमरता कभी नहीं पाई जा सकती।
इत्याकर्ण्य द्विजमुखाच्चिन्तयामास सा पुनःइदं स्वप्रज्ञयैवाशु भीता प्रियवियोगतः || २५ ||
ityākarṇya dvijamukhāccintayāmāsa sā punaḥidaṃ svaprajñayaivāśu bhītā priyaviyogataḥ || 25 ||
Hearing this from the brahmin's mouth, she quickly thought this over again in her own mind, frightened at the thought of losing her beloved.
ब्राह्मण के मुँह से यह सुनकर, वह प्रिय के वियोग के डर से घबराकर, फिर से अपनी बुद्धि से जल्दी यह सोचने लगी।
मरणं भर्तुरग्रे मे यदि दैवाद्भविष्यतितत्सर्वदुःखनिर्मुक्ता संस्थास्ये सुखमात्मनि || २६ ||
maraṇaṃ bharturagre me yadi daivādbhaviṣyatitatsarvaduḥkhanirmuktā saṃsthāsye sukhamātmani || 26 ||
If, by fate, my husband dies before me, then I will free myself from all sorrow and remain happily settled within myself.
अगर भाग्य से मेरे पति की मृत्यु मुझसे पहले हो जाए, तो मैं सारे दुख से मुक्त होकर अपने भीतर सुख से टिकी रहूंगी।
अथ वर्षसहस्रेण भर्तादौ चेन्मरिष्यतितत्करिष्ये तथा येन जीवो गेहान्न यास्यति || २७ ||
atha varṣasahasreṇa bhartādau cenmariṣyatitatkariṣye tathā yena jīvo gehānna yāsyati || 27 ||
But if my husband is to die only after a thousand years, then I will do such a thing that his life does not leave this house.
और अगर मेरे पति को हज़ार साल बाद मरना है, तो मैं ऐसा कुछ करूंगी कि उनका जीव इस घर से बाहर न जाए।
तद्भ्रमद्भर्तृजीवेऽस्मिन्निजे शुद्धान्तमण्डपेभर्त्रा विलोकिता नित्यं निवत्स्यामि यथासुखम् || २८ ||
tadbhramadbhartṛjīve'sminnije śuddhāntamaṇḍapebhartrā vilokitā nityaṃ nivatsyāmi yathāsukham || 28 ||
With my husband's life then wandering here in this our own inner chamber, seen always by him, I will live happily as I wish.
मेरे पति का वह जीव इसी हमारे अपने अंतःपुर में घूमता रहेगा, और मैं हमेशा उनकी नज़र में रहकर जैसे चाहूं वैसे सुख से रहूंगी।
अद्यैवारभ्यैतदर्थ देवीं ज्ञप्तिं सरस्वतीम्जपोपवासनियमैरातोषं पूजयाम्यहम् || २९ ||
adyaivārabhyaitadartha devīṃ jñaptiṃ sarasvatīmjapopavāsaniyamairātoṣaṃ pūjayāmyaham || 29 ||
From this very day, for this purpose, I will worship the goddess of knowledge, Sarasvati, with chanting, fasting and vows, until she is pleased.
आज से ही, इसी काम के लिए, मैं जप, उपवास और नियमों से ज्ञान की देवी सरस्वती की पूजा करूंगी, जब तक वे प्रसन्न न हो जाएं।
इति निश्चित्य सा नाथमनुक्त्वैव वराङ्गनायथाशास्त्रं चचारोग्रं तथा नियममास्थिता || ३० ||
iti niścitya sā nāthamanuktvaiva varāṅganāyathāśāstraṃ cacārograṃ tathā niyamamāsthitā || 30 ||
Having decided this, that beautiful woman, without telling her husband, followed a harsh vow exactly as the scriptures prescribe, and held firmly to that discipline.
यह तय करके, वह सुंदर स्त्री, अपने पति को बताए बिना ही, शास्त्र के अनुसार एक कठोर व्रत करने लगी और उसी नियम पर डटी रही।
त्रिरात्रस्य त्रिरात्रस्य पर्यन्ते कृतपारणादेवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञविद्वत्पूजापरायणा || ३१ ||
trirātrasya trirātrasya paryante kṛtapāraṇādevadvijaguruprājñavidvatpūjāparāyaṇā || 31 ||
At the end of every three nights she would break her fast, and she stayed devoted to worshipping gods, brahmins, teachers, and wise and learned people.
हर तीन रातों के बाद वह अपना व्रत खोलती थी, और देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों, गुरुओं तथा बुद्धिमान और विद्वान लोगों की पूजा में लगी रहती थी।
स्नानदानतपोध्याननित्योद्युक्तशरीरिकासर्वास्तिक्यसदाचारकारिणी क्लेशहारिणी || ३२ ||
snānadānatapodhyānanityodyuktaśarīrikāsarvāstikyasadācārakāriṇī kleśahāriṇī || 32 ||
Her body was always busy with bathing, giving gifts, austerity and meditation; she kept full faith and good conduct, and she took away suffering.
उसका शरीर हमेशा स्नान, दान, तप और ध्यान में लगा रहता था; वह पूरी श्रद्धा और अच्छे आचरण से रहती थी और दुख को दूर करने वाली थी।
यथाकालं यथोद्योगं यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम्तोषयामास भर्तारमपरिज्ञातसंस्थितिः || ३३ ||
yathākālaṃ yathodyogaṃ yathāśāstraṃ yathākramamtoṣayāmāsa bhartāramaparijñātasaṃsthitiḥ || 33 ||
At the right time, with the right effort, according to the scriptures and in the right order, she kept pleasing her husband, while he did not know what she was really doing.
सही समय पर, सही मेहनत से, शास्त्र के अनुसार और सही क्रम से, वह अपने पति को खुश रखती रही, जबकि उन्हें उसकी असली स्थिति का पता नहीं था।
त्रिरात्रशतमेवं सा बाला नियमशालिनी अनारतं तपोनिष्ठामतिष्ठत्कष्टचेष्टया || ३४ ||
trirātraśatamevaṃ sā bālā niyamaśālinīanārataṃ taponiṣṭhāmatiṣṭhatkaṣṭaceṣṭayā || 34 ||
So for a hundred sets of three nights, that young woman, rich in discipline, stayed constantly fixed in her austerity, through hard and difficult practice.
इस तरह सौ बार तीन-तीन रातों तक, नियम से भरी वह युवती लगातार अपने कठिन तप में डटी रही, कठोर साधना करते हुए।
त्रिरात्राणां शते चाथ पूजिता प्रतिमानिता तुष्टा भगवती गौरी वागीशा समुवाच ताम् || ३५ ||
trirātrāṇāṃ śate cātha pūjitā pratimānitātuṣṭā bhagavatī gaurī vāgīśā samuvāca tām || 35 ||
And at the end of the hundredth set of three nights, worshipped and greatly honored, the pleased goddess Gauri, the mistress of speech, spoke to her.
और सौवीं तीन-रात की अवधि के अंत में, पूजी और बहुत सम्मानित की गई, प्रसन्न होकर देवी गौरी, वाणी की स्वामिनी, उससे बोलीं।
श्रीसरस्वत्युवाचनिरन्तरेण तपसा भर्तृभक्त्यतिशालिनापरितुष्टास्मि ते वत्से गृहाण वरमीप्सितम् || ३६ ||
śrīsarasvatyuvācanirantareṇa tapasā bhartṛbhaktyatiśālināparituṣṭāsmi te vatse gṛhāṇa varamīpsitam || 36 ||
Glorious Sarasvati said: By your unbroken austerity and your great devotion to your husband, I am well pleased with you, child. Take the boon you wish for.
श्री सरस्वती बोलीं, तुम्हारे लगातार तप से और अपने पति के प्रति तुम्हारी बड़ी भक्ति से मैं तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हूं, बेटी। जो वरदान चाहती हो, मांग लो।
श्रीराज्ञ्युवाचजय जन्मजराज्वालादाहदोषशशिप्रभेजय हार्दान्धकारौघनिवारणरविप्रभे || ३७ ||
śrīrājñyuvācajaya janmajarājvālādāhadoṣaśaśiprabhejaya hārdāndhakāraughanivāraṇaraviprabhe || 37 ||
The glorious queen said: Victory to you, whose moon-like light cures the burning pain of birth and old age. Victory to you, whose sun-like light clears away the flood of darkness in the heart.
श्री रानी बोलीं, आपकी जय हो, आपकी चांदनी जैसी चमक जन्म और बुढ़ापे की जलन को ठीक कर देती है। आपकी जय हो, आपकी सूरज जैसी चमक हृदय के अंधेरे की बाढ़ को हटा देती है।
अम्ब मातर्जगन्मातस्त्रायस्व कृपणामिमामिदं वरद्वयं देहि यदहं प्रार्थये शुभे || ३८ ||
amba mātarjaganmātastrāyasva kṛpaṇāmimāmidaṃ varadvayaṃ dehi yadahaṃ prārthaye śubhe || 38 ||
O mother, O mother, mother of the world, save this poor, helpless woman. Give me these two boons that I am asking for, O auspicious one.
हे मां, हे मां, हे जगत की मां, इस बेचारी, असहाय स्त्री की रक्षा करो। हे शुभ देवी, मैं जो दो वरदान मांग रही हूं, वे मुझे दे दो।
एकं तावद्विदेहस्य भर्तुर्जीवो ममाम्बिकेअस्मादेव हि मा यासीन्निजान्तःपुरमण्डपात् || ३९ ||
ekaṃ tāvadvidehasya bharturjīvo mamāmbikeasmādeva hi mā yāsīnnijāntaḥpuramaṇḍapāt || 39 ||
One boon, mother: let the life of my husband, the king of Videha, not leave this very inner-palace hall of ours.
हे मां, पहला वरदान यह है, मेरे पति, विदेह के राजा, का जीव हमारे इसी अंतःपुर से बाहर न जाए।
द्वितीयं त्वां महादेवि प्रार्थयेऽहं यदा यदादर्शनाय वरार्थाय तदा मे देहि दर्शनम् || ४० ||
dvitīyaṃ tvāṃ mahādevi prārthaye'haṃ yadā yadādarśanāya varārthāya tadā me dehi darśanam || 40 ||
The second, great goddess, I ask of you: whenever I wish to see you, or need a boon, give me your presence then.
हे महादेवी, दूसरा वरदान यह है, जब भी मैं आपके दर्शन के लिए या किसी वरदान के लिए चाहूं, तब मुझे अपने दर्शन दे देना।
इत्याकर्ण्य जगन्माता तवास्त्वेवमिति स्वयमुक्त्वान्तर्धानमगमत्प्रोत्थायोर्मिरिवार्णवे || ४१ ||
ityākarṇya jaganmātā tavāstvevamiti svayamuktvāntardhānamagamatprotthāyormirivārṇave || 41 ||
Hearing this, the mother of the world herself said, let it be so, and then vanished, rising and disappearing like a wave in the ocean.
यह सुनकर जगत की मां ने खुद कहा, ऐसा ही होगा, और फिर समुद्र में उठती लहर की तरह उठकर अंतर्ध्यान हो गईं।
अथ सा राजमहिषी परितुष्टेष्टदेवताश्रुतगीतेव हरिणी बभूवानन्दधारिणी || ४२ ||
atha sā rājamahiṣī parituṣṭeṣṭadevatāśrutagīteva hariṇī babhūvānandadhāriṇī || 42 ||
Then that queen, having heard the words of her satisfied chosen goddess, became joyful like a doe, and was filled with bliss.
फिर वह रानी, अपनी प्रसन्न इष्ट देवी के वचन सुनकर, हिरनी की तरह खुश हो गई और आनंद से भर गई।
पक्षमासर्तुकटके दिनारे वर्षदण्डकेक्षणनाभौ स्पन्दमये कालचक्रे वहत्यथ || ४३ ||
pakṣamāsartukaṭake dināre varṣadaṇḍakekṣaṇanābhau spandamaye kālacakre vahatyatha || 43 ||
Then the pulsing wheel of time kept turning on, its rim made of fortnights, months and seasons, its spokes the days, its axle the years, and its hub the moments.
फिर समय का धड़कता हुआ चक्र चलता रहा, जिसकी परिधि पक्ष, महीने और ऋतुएं थीं, जिसकी तीलियां दिन थीं, जिसकी धुरी साल थी और जिसकी नाभि क्षण थे।
अन्तर्धिमाजगामास्याः पत्युस्तच्चेतनं तनौसंदृश्यमानमेवाशु शुष्कपत्ररसो यथा || ४४ ||
antardhimājagāmāsyāḥ patyustaccetanaṃ tanausaṃdṛśyamānamevāśu śuṣkapatraraso yathā || 44 ||
As time passed, her husband's awareness in his body quickly began to fade, even while it could still be seen, like the sap draining from a dry leaf.
समय बीतने पर, उसके पति की चेतना उनके शरीर में जल्दी ही मिटने लगी, दिखते-दिखते ही, जैसे सूखे पत्ते का रस सूख जाता है।
रणखण्डितदेहेऽस्मिन्मृतेऽन्तःपुरमण्डपेनिर्जला नलिनीवासौ परां म्लानिमुपाययौ || ४५ ||
raṇakhaṇḍitadehe'sminmṛte'ntaḥpuramaṇḍapenirjalā nalinīvāsau parāṃ mlānimupāyayau || 45 ||
When he died in that inner-palace hall, his body torn apart in battle, she withered completely, like a pond of lotuses left without water.
जब वह युद्ध में शरीर के टुकड़े-टुकड़े होकर उसी अंतःपुर में मर गया, तो वह पानी के बिना कमलों के तालाब की तरह पूरी तरह मुरझा गई।
विषोष्णश्वसनध्वस्तसकलाधरपल्लवाप्राप सा मरणावस्थां सशल्येव मृगी यथा || ४६ ||
viṣoṣṇaśvasanadhvastasakalādharapallavāprāpa sā maraṇāvasthāṃ saśalyeva mṛgī yathā || 46 ||
With her lips, like fresh sprouts, all withered by her hot, poison-like breathing, she reached the state of death, like a deer struck with an arrow.
अपनी गर्म, ज़हर जैसी सांसों से उसके कोंपल जैसे होंठ पूरी तरह मुरझा गए, और वह तीर से बिंधी हिरनी की तरह मरने की हालत में पहुंच गई।
प्राप सा तमसान्धत्वं तस्मिन्मरणमागतेदीपज्वालालवे क्षीणे सद्मश्रीरिव भूषिता || ४७ ||
prāpa sā tamasāndhatvaṃ tasminmaraṇamāgatedīpajvālālave kṣīṇe sadmaśrīriva bhūṣitā || 47 ||
When his death came, she fell into blinding darkness, like the beauty of a house, still decorated, when the small flame of its lamp dies out.
जब उसकी मृत्यु हुई, तो वह अंधेरे में डूब गई और अंधी हो गई, जैसे किसी सजे हुए घर की शोभा तब फीकी पड़ जाती है जब दीये की छोटी लौ बुझ जाती है।
कार्श्यमाप क्षणेनासौ बाला विरसतां गतायथा स्रोतस्विनी स्रोतक्षये क्षारविधूसरा || ४८ ||
kārśyamāpa kṣaṇenāsau bālā virasatāṃ gatāyathā srotasvinī srotakṣaye kṣāravidhūsarā || 48 ||
In an instant that young woman grew thin and lost all her freshness, like a river turning grey and bitter with salt when its flow dries up.
उस युवती का शरीर पल भर में दुबला पड़ गया और उसकी सारी रौनक चली गई, जैसे किसी नदी की धारा सूखने पर वह खारी और धूसर हो जाती है।
क्षिप्रमाक्रन्दिनी क्षिप्रं मौनमूका वियोगिनीबभूव चक्रवाकीव मानिनी मरणोन्मुखी || ४९ ||
kṣipramākrandinī kṣipraṃ maunamūkā viyoginībabhūva cakravākīva māninī maraṇonmukhī || 49 ||
Quickly she cried out, and quickly she fell silent, unable to speak. Torn apart from her beloved, this proud woman became like a female chakravaka bird facing death.
वह जल्दी ही रोने-चिल्लाने लगी, और जल्दी ही चुप हो गई, कुछ बोल न सकी। अपने प्रिय से बिछड़कर, यह अभिमानी स्त्री एक चक्रवाकी पक्षी जैसी हो गई जो मरने के करीब हो।
अथ तामतिमात्रविह्वलां सकृपाकाशभवा सरस्वतीशफरीं ह्रदशोषविह्वलां प्रथमा वृष्टिरिवान्वकम्पत || ५० ||
atha tāmatimātravihvalāṃ sakṛpākāśabhavā sarasvatīśapharīṃ hradaśoṣavihvalāṃ prathamā vṛṣṭirivānvakampata || 50 ||
Then, out of compassion, a voice arising from the sky came to her, who was utterly overwhelmed, like a fish struggling as its pond dries up, the way the first rain falls on something parched.
फिर, दया से भरी हुई, आकाश से आई एक आवाज़ उसके पास पहुँची, जो बहुत ज़्यादा व्याकुल थी, जैसे कोई मछली तालाब सूखने पर तड़पती है, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे पहली बारिश किसी सूखी चीज़ पर गिरती है।
