13.40.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ niśācarācāraciraghore raṇāṅgaṇe | ahanīva janācāre sthite yāmāvarehite || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: So the night went on like a battlefield, long and terrible with the doings of the creatures that walk in the dark, until everyone's activity settled down as though it were day, and the watches of the night had already passed.

hastahāryatamaḥpiṇḍasphuṭakuḍye niśāgṛhe | lābhocchadochcalacate bhūtasaṅghe pravalgati || 2 ||

In that house of night, where the walls had cracked and the darkness had become thick enough to grab with the hand, crowds of spirits kept leaping about, now showing themselves, now vanishing again.

niḥśabde dhvāntasaṃcāre nidrāruddhakakubgaṇe | līlāpatirudārātmā kiṃcitskhinnamanā iva || 3 ||

In that silent, dark movement, with sleep shutting in every direction, the noble-hearted lord who loved play seemed, as it were, a little sad at heart.

prātaḥkāryaṃ vicāryāśu mantrabhirmantrikovidaiḥ | dīrghacandrasamākāre śayane himaśītale || 4 ||

He had quickly talked over the next morning's work with his ministers, who were skilled in giving counsel, and lay down on a bed cool as snow, shaped like a long crescent moon.

sukṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ cedaṃ mameti kṛtakalpanam | bālo'bhūvamahaṃ tvadya yuveti vilasaddhṛdi || 5 ||

In his heart these thoughts kept rising and playing: 'This good deed and this bad deed are mine' — such made-up ideas — and 'I was a child; today I am young.'

atha te lalane vyoma tatparityajya tadgṛham | randhrairvivishaturvātalekhe'bjamukulaṃ yathā || 6 ||

Then those two women left the sky and, giving it up, entered that house through its cracks, the way a breath of wind enters a lotus bud.

śrīrāma uvāca | kiyanmātramidaṃ sthūlaṃ śarīraṃ vāgvidāṃvara | randhreṇa tantutanunā kathamāśvāviśatprabho || 7 ||

Sri Rama said: O best of speakers, how big is this heavy body! How, my lord, could it get in so fast through a hole as thin as a thread?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaādhibhautikadeho'hamiti yasya matibhramaḥtasyāsāvaṇurandhreṇa gantuṃ śaknoti nānagha || 8 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: O sinless one, only someone who mistakenly thinks 'I am this physical body' finds it impossible to pass through a tiny hole.

rodhito'hamaneneti na māmyatreti yasya dhīḥ | anubhūtānubhavatī bhavatītyanubhūyate || 9 ||

Whoever does not think 'I am blocked by this' or 'I am stuck here' — for him it is understood that the very power of feeling that has always been at work simply goes on being at work.

yenānubhūtaṃ pūrvārdhaṃ gacchāmīti sa tatkriyaḥ | kathaṃ bhavati paścārdhaṃ gamanounmukhacetanaḥ || 10 ||

The one who felt 'I am going' through the first half of the way is the doer of that very act — so how, in the second half, does the mind that is set on going become anything different?

nahi vāryūrdhvamāyāti nādho gacchati pāvakaḥ | yā yathaiva pravṛttā citsā tathaiva pratiṣṭhitā || 11 ||

Water never flows upward, and fire never goes downward. Whatever direction the mind has set out in, in that same direction it stays fixed.

chāyāyāmupaviṣṭasya kutastāpānubhūtayaḥ | yasya saṃvedane'nyo'rthaḥ kenacinnānubhūyate || 12 ||

A person sitting in the shade — where would he feel the sun's heat? In the same way, when there is no other thing at all felt within someone's awareness, nothing can be felt to trouble it.

yathā saṃvittathā cittaṃ sā tathāvasthitiṃ gatā | parameṇa prayatnena nīyate'nyadaśāṃ punaḥ || 13 ||

As one's awareness is, so is the mind; it settles into that same state. Yet with the greatest effort, it can be led again into a different state.

sarpaikapratyayo rajjvāmasarpapratyaye balāt | nivartate'nyathā tveṣa tiṣṭhatyeva yathāsthitaḥ || 14 ||

The single thought that a rope is a snake turns back by force the moment the thought 'it is not a snake' arises; otherwise, it just stays exactly as it was.

yathā saṃvittathā cittaṃ yathā cittaṃ tathehitam | bālaṃ pratyapi saṃsiddhametatko nānubhūtavān || 15 ||

As the awareness is, so is the mind; as the mind is, so is the effort that follows. This holds true even for a child — who has not felt this for himself?

yaḥ punaḥ svapnasankalpapuruṣaḥ pratimākṛtiḥ | ākāśamātrakākāraḥ sa kathaṃ kena rodhyate || 16 ||

But a being that is only a figure in a dream or a thought, shaped like a mere picture, made only of empty space — how, and by what, could he ever be blocked?

cittamātraṃ śarīraṃ tu sarvasyaiva hi sarvataḥ | vidyate vedanāccaetatkvacidetīva hṛdgatāt || 17 ||

For everyone, everywhere, the body is truly nothing but mind. And starting from what arises in the heart, it seems, as it were, to reach any place at all.

yathābhimatamevāsya bhavatyastamayodayam | ādisarge svabhāvotthaṃ paścāddvaitaikyakāraṇam || 18 ||

Its setting and its rising happen exactly as it wishes. At the very first creation it arose out of its own nature; later it becomes the cause of both twoness and oneness.

cittākāśaṃ cidākāśamākāśaṃ ca tṛtīyakam | viddhyetattrayamekaṃ tvamavinābhāvanāvaśāt || 19 ||

Know that the space of the mind, the space of consciousness, and the third — plain empty space — these three are, because they never come apart, really one and the same.

etaccittasarīratvaṃ viddhi sarvagatodayam | yathāsaṃvedanecchatvādyathāsaṃvedanodayam || 20 ||

Know that this being of the body as mind rises up everywhere; it rises exactly according to how one's awareness wishes, exactly according to how one's awareness arises.

vasati trasareṇvantardhriyate gaganodare | līyate'ṅkurakośeṣu rasībhavati pallave || 21 ||

It lives inside a speck of dust; it is held within the belly of the sky; it dissolves into the sheath of a sprout; it turns into sap inside a young leaf.

ullasatyambuvīcitve pranṛtyati śilodare | pravarṣatyambudo bhūtvā śilībhūyāvatiṣṭhate || 22 ||

It rises up as a wave of water; it dances inside the belly of a rock; becoming a rain cloud, it pours down rain; and, becoming stone, it stands still.

yathecchamambare yāti jaṭhare'pi ca bhūbhṛtām | anantarākāśavapurdhatte'tha paramāṇutām || 23 ||

It goes into the sky just as it wishes, and also into the belly of mountains; it takes on a form as vast as endless space, and then it takes on the state of the smallest atom.

243.40.24

dehasyāntarbahirapi dadhadvanatanūruham || 24 ||

...both inside and outside a body, and also taking on the shape of a forest tree.

bhavatyākāśamādhatte koṭīḥ padmajasadmanām | ananyāḥ svātmano'mbhodhirāvartaracanā iva || 25 ||

It becomes space and holds within itself crores of the worlds of Brahma the lotus-born, and these worlds are not separate from itself, just as the whirlpools formed in the ocean are not separate from the ocean.

anudvignaprabodho'sau sargādau cittadehakaḥ | ākāśatmā mahānbhūtvā vetti prakṛtatāṃ tataḥ || 26 ||

At the start of creation, this being, calm and undisturbed in its awareness, having mind as its body, becomes great with space as its own self, and then it comes to know its own true nature.

asatyameva vāritvaṃ buddhyodetīva tattathā | vanadhyāputro'yamastīti yathā svapne bhramo naraḥ || 27 ||

In just this way the false idea of being water rises up in the mind, exactly as a mirage does, like a man in a dream who is deluded into believing, this is the son of a barren woman.

śrīrāma uvāca kiṃ cittametadbhavati kiṃvā bhavati nau kathamkathameva na sadrūpaṃ nānyadbhavati vīkṣaṇāt || 28 ||

Sri Rama said, is this mind something that comes into being? Or how does it come to be for us? Why is it that it has no real form, and yet nothing other than it appears through mere seeing?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca pratyekameva yaccittaṃ tadevaṃrūpaśaktikam | pṛthakpratyekamuditaḥ praticittaṃ jagadbhamaḥ || 29 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, each individual mind has exactly this kind of power and form. Arising separately in each one, the illusion of the world exists separately within each mind.

kṣaṇakalpajagatsaṃghā samudyanti galanti ca | nimeṣātkasyacitkalpātkasyacicca kramam śṛṇu || 30 ||

Groups of worlds lasting a moment or an age rise up and dissolve, for one being this happens in an instant, for another in a whole age. Listen now to the order of this.

maraṇādimayī mūrcchā pratyekenānubhūyate| yaiṣā tāṃ viddhi sumate mahāpralayayāminīm|| 31 ||

Each being separately experiences a swoon that is like death. Know this, O wise one, to be the night of the great dissolution.

tadante tanute sargaṃ sarva eva pṛthakpṛthak| sahajasvapnasankalpānsaṃbhramācalanṛtyavat|| 32 ||

At the end of that night, every single being spreads out its own creation, each one separately, like one's own natural dreams and imaginings, like a bewildered, whirling dance of a mountain.

mahāpralayarātryante cirādātmamanovapuḥ| yathedaṃ tanute tadvatpratyekaṃ mṛtyanantaram|| 33 ||

Just as, at the end of the night of the great dissolution, the self after a long time takes on this body made of mind, in the same way, right after death, each individual being does the same.

śrīrāma uvāca mṛteranantaraṃ sargo yathā smṛtyānubhūyate| cirāttathānubhavati nāto viśvamakāraṇam|| 34 ||

Sri Rama said, right after death, creation is experienced as though through memory, at once, but you say it happens only after a long time. Does that not make the universe without a cause?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca mahati pralaye rāma sarve hariharādayaḥ| videhamuktatāṃ yānti smṛteḥ ka iva saṃbhavaḥ|| 35 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, O Rama, at the time of the great dissolution, all beings, even Hari and Hara, reach a liberation without any body. Then how could there be any possibility of memory?

asmadādiḥ prabuddhātmā kilāvaśyaṃ vimucyatekathaṃ bhavantu no muktā videhāḥ padmajātayaḥ || 36 ||

We, whose self has awakened, are certainly released for sure. Then how would the others, born of the lotus-born Brahma, not also become liberated and bodiless?

anye tvamiva ye jīvāsteṣāṃ maraṇajanmasusmṛtiḥ kāraṇatāmeti mokṣābhāvavaśādiha || 37 ||

But other beings, like you, who are not yet liberated, for them the clear memory of birth and death becomes the cause here, because liberation has not yet happened.

bhavatyadrirdharādhāro baddhapīṭho nabhaḥ śirāḥjīvo hi mṛtimūrcchānte yadantaḥ pronmiṣannivaanunmiṣita evāste tatpradhānamudāhṛtam || 38 ||

A mountain becomes the support of the earth, its base fixed, its peak reaching the sky. In the same way, the individual soul, at the end of the swoon of death, seems within itself as if about to open its eyes, yet stays actually unopened, and that state is called Pradhana, the root matter.

tadvyomaprakṛtiḥ proktā tadavyaktaṃ jaḍājaḍamsaṃsmṛterasmṛteścaiva krama eṣa bhavodaye || 39 ||

That is called the nature made of space, that is the unmanifest, both inert and conscious. This is the order, remembering and not remembering, in the rising of existence.

bodhonmukhatve hi mahattatprabuddhaṃ yadā bhavettadā tanmātradikkālakriyā bhūtādyudeti khāt || 40 ||

When the Great Principle, inclined toward waking, actually wakes up, then from that empty space arise the subtle elements, direction, time, action, and the gross elements.

tadevocchūnamābuddhaṃ bhavatīndriyapañcakam | tadeva budhyate dehaḥ sa eṣo'syātivāhikaḥ || 41 ||

That very thing, swelling up and waking, becomes the five senses. That very thing is known as the body, this is its subtle traveling body.

cirakālapratyayataḥ kalpanāparipīvaraḥ | ādhibhautikatābodhamādhatte caiṣa bālavat || 42 ||

Through the conviction built over a long time, grown thick with imagination, this being takes on the sense of being made of gross matter, like a child.

tato dikkālakalanāstadādhāratayā sthitāḥ | udyantyanuditā eva vāyoḥ spandakriyā iva || 43 ||

Then the reckonings of direction and time, resting on that as their support, arise even though they had not really arisen, like the movement of the wind's vibration.

vṛddhimitthamayaṃ yāto mudhaiva bhuvanabhramaḥ | svapnāṅganāsaṅgasamastvanubhūto'pyasanmayaḥ || 44 ||

In this way this illusion of the world has grown, though it is entirely useless and false, like the embrace of a woman in a dream, which, though it is felt, is made only of the unreal.

yatraitva mriyate jantuḥ paśyatyāśu tadeva saḥ | tatraiva bhuvanābhogamimamitthamiva sthitam || 45 ||

Right where a creature dies, it immediately sees that very world again, right there this same expanse of the world stands as if it were real, in just this way.

vyomaivānubhavatyacchamahaṃ jagaditi bhramam | vyomarūpaṃ vyomarūpī jīvo jāta ivātmavān || 46 ||

Space itself, though clear and pure, experiences the illusion, I am the world. Taking the very form of space, being made of space, the individual soul is born as though it had a self of its own.

473.40.47

surapattanaśailārkatārānikarasundaram | jarāmaraṇavaiklavyavyādhisankatakoṭaram || 47 ||

This world is beautiful with the cities of the gods, with mountains, with the sun, and with clusters of stars, yet it is a deep pit of old age, death, weakness, and disease.

483.40.48

svabhāvābhāvasaṃrambhasthūlasūkṣmacarācaram | sāvadhyadvyurvīnadīśāhorātrikalpakṣaṇakṣayam || 48 ||

It is full of things constantly starting up and ceasing to exist, gross and subtle, moving and unmoving, it is bound within limits, earth, rivers, and seas, and it wears away through day and night, ages and instants.

ahaṃ jāto'munā pitrā kilātretyāptaniścayam | iyaṃ mātā dhanamidaṃ mametyuditavāsanam || 49 ||

"I was born here, to this father" - so he firmly believes. "This is my mother, this wealth is mine" - such is the impression that rises in him.

503.40.50

sukṛtaṃ ipataṃcedamamotiḷatakalpanam | bālobhūvamahantvadyayavetivichasaddhudi || 50 ||

This good deed too is mine - so the mind imagines. "I was a child, now today I am this" - such a thought cuts through the honest heart.

513.40.51

pratyekamevamuditaḥ saṃsāravana-khaṇḍakaḥ| tārākusumito nīlameghacañcalapallavaḥ || 51 ||

In this way, one after another, a patch of the forest of this world rises up - flowering with stars, its leaves the restless dark clouds.

523.40.52

carannaramṛgānīkaḥ surāsuravihangamaḥ| ālokakausumarajāḥ śyāmāgahanakuñjakaḥ || 52 ||

Herds of men and animals roam in it, gods and demons are its birds. Light itself is the pollen of its flowers, and dark young women are its thick groves.

533.40.53

abdhipuṣkariṇīpūrṇo mervādyacalaloṣṭakaḥ| cittapuṣkarabījāntarnilīnānubhavāṅkuraḥ || 53 ||

The oceans are its ponds, full of water, and Meru and the other mountains are just clumps of earth in it. Inside the seed that is the lotus of the mind, the sprout of experience lies hidden.

yatraiṣa mriyate jīvas tatraivaṃ paśyati kṣaṇāt| pratyekamuditeṣvevaṃ jagatkhaṇḍeṣu bhūriśaḥ || 54 ||

Wherever this soul dies, there, in an instant, it sees this same thing again. In this way, in each of the many pieces of the world that keep arising, again and again.

553.40.55

koṭayo brahmarudrendramarudviṣṇuvivasvatām| giryabdhimandaladvīpalokāntaradṛśāṃ gatāḥ || 55 ||

Millions of Brahmas, Rudras, Indras, wind-gods, Vishnus and Suns have come and gone, each with their own view of mountains, oceans, regions, islands, and other worlds.

yātā yāsyanti yāntyetā dṛṣṭayo naṣṭarūpiṇīḥ | yā brahmaṇyupabṛṃhāḍhyāstāḥ ke gaṇayituṃ kṣamāḥ || 56 ||

These ways of seeing have gone, will go, and are going now - each one's form is lost. And those that lie rich and expanded within Brahman itself - who can possibly count them?

evaṃ kuḍyamayaṃ viśvaṃ nāstyeva mananādṛte | manane calamevāntastadidānīṃ vicāraya || 57 ||

So this universe, solid like a wall, does not exist at all apart from thinking. Within thought it is nothing but movement - now think this over carefully.

yadeva taccidākāśaṃ tadeva mananaṃ smṛtam | yadeva ca cidākāśaṃ tadeva paramaṃ padam || 58 ||

That very space of consciousness is what is called thought. And that very same space of consciousness is the highest state.

yadevāmbu sa āvarto natvasyāvarta vastu san | draṣṭaivāste dṛśyamiva dṛśyaṃ natvasti vastu sat || 59 ||

Water itself is the whirlpool - the whirlpool is not a separate real thing. In the same way, the seer alone exists, appearing as what is seen; the seen is not a real, existing thing.

cidvyomno bhūtanabhasi kacanaṃ yanmaṇeriva | tajjagadbhāvinānāsattattvaṃ śvabhramivāmbare || 60 ||

Just as the gleam of a jewel appears in the sky of the elements, that gleam, coming from the space of consciousness, becomes the world with its many seemingly real things - like a pit appearing in open sky.

madbuddhārtho jagacchabdo vidyate paramāmṛtam | tvadbuddhārthastu nāstyeva tvamahaṃśabdakādapi || 61 ||

In my understanding, the word "world" means the highest nectar - it truly exists as that. But in your understanding, it does not exist at all - not even as much as the words "you" and "I" exist.

tasmāllīlāsarasvatyāvākāśavapuṣau sthite | sarvage paramātmācchē sarvatrāpratighē'naghē || 62 ||

So Lila and Sarasvati, both with bodies like space, stay everywhere, within the pure Supreme Self - unobstructed everywhere, and free of fault.

yatra yatra sadā vyomni yathākāmaṃ yathēpsitam | udayaṃ kurutastēna tadgēhē'sti gatistayōḥ || 63 ||

Wherever, in that space, they wish and desire, the two of them make things arise; so that space is the very home where the two of them move about.

sarvatra saṃbhavati cidgaganaṃ tadatra sadvēdanaṃ kalanamāmananaṃ visāri | taccātivāhikamihāhurakuḍyamēva dēhaṃ kathaṃ ka iva taṃ vada kiṃ ruṇaddhi || 64 ||

The space of consciousness arises everywhere; here that is the true experience - active, ever-aware, spreading everywhere. That is what they call, in this world, the "traveling body," and it has no wall at all. How, then, could anything block it - tell me, what obstructs it?
