Sri Devi said: Immediately after the delusion called death, worlds appear quickly to the soul — just as, the moment an eye opens, all forms appear at once.
Even something never experienced, never seen, still seems as if "I did this" — in an instant it turns into a memory, the way one's own death in a dream turns into a memory.
"This world, this creation, is just memory" — it unfolds in exactly this way. Its one true nature is a confusion, born of habit, between a single moment and an age far away.
Thus awareness takes two forms — the unexperienced and the experienced — but both are simply consciousness itself arising, with no prior cause at all.
Even in what was never experienced, the sense that "this was experienced" rises up within — just as in the confusion of a dream, the memory of "father" arises for someone who is not one's actual father.
Sometimes, with no memory behind it at all, the world appears as a pure sudden manifestation, existing only as such — this is how it shone forth in form during the first creations, one thing following another in sequence.
O slender one, this visible world, beginning with the three worlds, stands in the memory of some as something experienced; but in the memory of others it stands as something never experienced at all.
For some it simply appears out of nowhere, with no prior chain of cause — because a particle of consciousness becoming lord of creatures happens just as accidentally as a crow landing on a branch the moment a palm fruit happens to fall from it.
Unless the ego and the world's persistence come to a total, complete end, this liberation — which by nature is the non-arising of anything — simply does not dawn.
rajjvāṃ sarpabhramaḥ sarpaśabdārthāsaṃbhavaṃ sthitam | anutpādamayaṃ tyaktvā śānto'pi hi na śāmyati || 13 ||
The illusion of a snake on a rope shows that the very thing the word "snake" points to was never possible there. Unless this is given up as something that never truly arose, it will not really settle down, even though it may seem calm.
Being half-calmed is not being calmed — it comes back again when a real encounter happens, just as, after one ghost has gone, another ghost rises up for the thoughtful person in its place.
And this cycle of worldly existence, however full of enjoyment it looks, is certainly nothing but the Supreme itself — this is certain. It appears without any real cause; whatever appears here is only appearance, nothing more.
Lila said: In the creation that took the form of the Brahmin and his wife, how did the memory of a cause arise for them at all, when there was nothing here before to remember?
śrīdevyuvāca | pitāmahasmṛtistatra kāraṇaṃ tasya na smṛtiḥ | pūrvaṃ na saṃbhavatyeva muktatvātpūrvajanmanaḥ || 17 ||
Sri Devi said: There, the memory of the Grandfather [Brahma] is the cause — it is not truly his own remembered experience. There was no "before" at all, since he was free of any actual previous birth.
There simply was no "before" holding anything to be remembered — and yet consciousness, existing in just that way, itself comes to take on the identity of the lotus-born one [Brahma].
"I existed before" — with this thought, another lord of creatures arises, separate from the earlier lord of creatures; someone comes into being purely by sudden manifestation, like the accidental meeting of a crow and a falling palm fruit.
So even when a world has thus arisen, nothing has really happened, ever, at any time. Nothing has truly "arisen" anywhere — it is only the sky of consciousness, remaining just as it is.
Of this twofold memory, the cause is the Supreme State itself — that relationship of cause and effect is, in truth, just one single thing, within the sky of consciousness.
Effect and cause, along with their contributing causes, are in truth one and the same thing. But for lack of recognizing that oneness of effect and cause, the illusion does not subside.
Know that memory, and all experience, are nothing but the form of the great Consciousness itself. Therefore "cause and effect" is only a word — it is not something real.
So nothing has ever really come into being, not the visible world, not the universe made of consciousness, nothing at all. Within the sky of consciousness there is only the sky of consciousness, resting in the pure Self alone.
līlovāca | aho nu paramā dṛṣṭirdarśitā devi me tvayā | rūpaśrīrjāgatī prātaḥ prabhayevaikṣaṇadyutiḥ || 25 ||
Lila said: Oh goddess, what a supreme vision you have shown me! The beauty of the forms of the world glows before my eyes like the light of early dawn.
Sri Devi said: Rest on this vision that cannot be grasped by thought, that is made of the nature of pure awareness, supreme and purifying — give up this body and become spotless.
Then, without any doubt, you will reach the self that is like space, resting in the sky — just as the imagination of a man standing on the earth reaches a city in the sky.
evaṃ sthite taṃ paśyāvaḥ saha sargamanargalam | ayaṃ taddarśanadvāre deho hi paramārgalam || 30 ||
This being so, let us both look at that creation together, without any hindrance. This body alone is the great bolt on the door that blocks the sight of it.
Sri Devi said: These worlds have no form of their own; they seem to have a form only because of a mistaken grasping. You understand them the way gold is understood as a wave-shaped ornament, as if the wave were something apart from the gold.
hemnyūrmikārūpadhare'pyūrmikātvaṃ na vidyate | yathā tathā jagadrūpe jagannāsti ca brahmaṇi || 33 ||
In gold that has taken the shape of a wave-ornament, there is no separate thing called a wave. In the same way, in the form the world takes, and in brahman too, there is no world.
This world is nothing but space; here it is brahman alone that is seen. Whatever little something is seen here is like a speck of dust seen in the ocean.
This visible world is simply false; the truth is brahman, and I am that non-dual brahman. The proof of this is the Vedanta texts, the teachers, and one's own experience as well.
Brahman alone sees brahman; what is not brahman does not see brahman. This very nature of brahman itself is what becomes known by names such as creation.
na brahmajagatāmasti kāryakāraṇatodayaḥ | kāraṇānāmabhāvena sarveṣāṃ sahakāriṇām || 37 ||
Between brahman and the world there is no rise of a cause-and-effect relation at all, because none of the causes, nor any of their helping conditions, exist.
yāvadabhyāsayogena na śāntā bhedadhīstava | nūnaṃ tāvadatadrūpā na brahma paripaśyasi || 38 ||
As long as your sense of difference is not calmed through practice, so long, being other than brahman in nature, you certainly do not see brahman fully.
My body, made of space, is just like a city built by the will. Within it I see brahman alone; through this very body I reach that highest state.
In the same way, beings such as the lotus-born Brahma are fit for a body made of pure knowledge; their place is a part within brahman, the self, the world and the rest.
tavābhyāsaṃ vinā bāle nākāro brahmatāṃ gataḥ|sthitaḥ kalanarūpātmā tena tannānupaśyasi||42||
Without your practice, O child, no form has attained the state of brahman; it remains only a self shaped by mental imagining — that is why you do not see it.
tasmādenaṃ parityajya dehaṃ cidvyomarūpiṇī|yatpaśyasi tadevādya kuru kāryavidāṃvare||44||
Therefore, giving up this body, O one whose nature is the space of pure awareness, do this very day what you see needs to be done, O best among those who know their task.
saṃkalpanagaraṃ satyaṃ yathāsaṃkalpitaṃ prati|saṃdehaṃ vā videhaṃ vā netaraṃ prati kiṃcana||45||
A city built by one's will is real only for the person who imagined it, whether that person is in a body or without a body; toward anyone else it is nothing at all.
Just as this illusion of the world settled into place at the very first creation, so, from that time onward, the fixed order of things has grown to its full strength in this same way.
śrīdevyuvāca | saṃkalpavyomavṛkṣaste yathā sannapi khātmakaḥ | na kuḍyātmā na kuḍyena rodhyate nāpi kuḍyahā || 49 ||
The goddess Devi said: Just as a tree in the sky of your own imagination exists and yet is made of empty space, it is not made of a wall, it is not blocked by a wall, and it does not need to break through a wall.
That formation made of pure, single being is truly nothing but the very form of consciousness. So this appearance differs only a little from that Supreme.
This is the kind of body I have. I do not leave it behind and go somewhere else; with this very body I reach that place, the way the wind carries a scent.
nahi pārthivatāsaṃvidetya pārthivasaṃvidā ekatvaṃ kalpanāśailaśailayoḥ kvāhatirmithaḥ || 53 ||
Awareness of being made of earth does not, just by joining another awareness of being made of earth, turn into solid matter. It is like two imagined mountains: where is there any real collision between them?
Because the subtle, traveling body is like the wind, its having a body made of solid, physical elements is only something the mind has taken hold of, through a long-held habit of thinking so.
yathā svapne yathā dīrghakāladhyāne yathākramē yathā ca sati saṃkalpē yathā gandharvapattanē || 55 ||
It is like a dream, like a long meditation, like something happening step by step in an illusion, like when a mere thought or wish arises, and like a city of the gandharvas in the sky.
When, because it is nothing but such an appearance, this little body of yours quickly comes to settle into a fixed state, then that traveling, subtle condition of being embodied will not carry you any further.
Lila said: When the sense of having this subtle, traveling body becomes thick and solid, does this body then actually turn into that solid state, or does it, in the end, perish?
Devi said: The process of perishing or not perishing can happen only to something that truly exists. But for something that, in truth, does not exist at all, what kind of perishing could there even be?
rajjvāṃ sarpa bhrame naṣṭe satyabodhavasāt sute | sarpo na naṣṭa unnaṣṭo vetyevaṃ kai va sā kathā || 59 ||
O daughter, when the mistaken idea of a snake on a rope is destroyed by the power of true understanding, saying "the snake was destroyed" or "the snake has vanished" is a strange kind of talk, since there never was a snake at all.
Just as, once the rope is truly known, the snake is no longer seen on it, so too, once the subtle, traveling nature of the body is known, the physical body is no longer seen as real.
Even something merely imagined could be set aside by the person who imagined it, the way one sets aside an imagined rock. But such a rock never actually existed here at any time, so there is truly nothing to set aside.
At the very first creation, when the state of mind came into being, itself nothing but something built by imagination, then, from that moment on, the one single underlying reality has been looking at the visible world through it.
Devi said: Just as being a bracelet exists in gold, and being a wave exists in water, and just as a sense of being real exists in a dream, in a mere thought, in an imagined city, and so on...
...in the very same way, none of this exists at all in the experience of what is truly real, and it does not exist at all in Brahman either, whose own nature stands apart from all imagination and is completely free of any flaw.
Just as there is no dust in the open sky, in the same way there is no division at all in the Supreme. This reality is without parts, undivided, at peace, one, unborn, and spread through everything.
Whatever little thing appears here is nothing but that same flawless reality itself, just as the sparkle of glass belongs to the glass itself, or the gleam of a beautiful, precious gem belongs to the gem itself.
Lila said: Goddess, tell us, for this whole long time, by what exactly were we made to wander around confused, through these very ideas of duality and non-duality?
Devi said: O restless one, you have been confused and troubled for so long only because you did not stop to look closely. This failure to look closely comes up out of mere habit, and it is destroyed the moment real inquiry begins.
This failure to look closely is destroyed by real inquiry in the blink of an eye. All this is nothing but pure being itself, so this so-called ignorance in between does not really exist at all.
tasmānnaivāvicāro'sti nāvidyāsti na bandhanam | na mokṣo'sti nirābādhaṃ śuddhabodhamidaṃ jagat || 72 ||
So in truth there is no failure to look closely, no ignorance, no bondage, and no freedom either. This whole world is simply pure, undisturbed awareness.
From today you are awake, you are free, you are a woman of true understanding; the seed that will thin out your old mental habits has now fallen into your heart.
atyantābhāvasaṃpattau draṣṭṛdṛśyadṛśāṃ manaḥ| ekadhyāne pare rūḍhe nirvikalpasamādhinī || 75 ||
When the seer, the seen thing, and the act of seeing all come to a complete and total end, and the mind settles into one supreme point of meditation, it reaches the deep, unbroken stillness where no differences remain.
Once this seed that destroys old desires and habits sprouts even a little in the heart, then step by step, liking, disliking, and all such feelings stop rising.
And this very root from which worldly life springs will be pulled out completely, and the settled, unbroken stillness of mind will stand on a pure, spotless base.
Freed from the dark stain of restless thought that has now left you, resting on a pure support like the clear inner space of the sky, and standing within the whole chain of cause and effect made by such thought, you will become this within a short time.
