Sri Rama said: O sage, in that state, did you experience happiness or sorrow? Please tell me for my enlightenment, O honorable one.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathā yāti naraḥ supto jāḍatāṃ cetano’pi san | cidvyoma gaccheddṛśyatvaṃ tathā jāḍyaṃ pracetati || 45 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Just as a sleeping person, though conscious, goes into a state of inertness, so does the conscious space go into a state of being an object of perception, thus it appears as inert.

ātmānaṃ cetati brahma pṛthvyādīva yadā tadāsuptaṃ jaḍamivāste'ntaḥ syādasya na tadanyathā || 46 ||

English

When the self (ātmānaṃ) reflects on Brahman (brahma), it becomes like the earth (pṛthvyādīva) and other elements. Then, it remains inert (jaḍamivāste) and dormant (suptaṃ) within. It cannot be otherwise (na tadanyathā).

vastutastasya khorvyādi nāsadrūpaṃ na sanmayamdraṣṭṛdṛśyamivābhāti brahma caitatsamaṃ sthitam || 47 ||

English

In reality, the elements such as space (khorvyādi) do not have a form (nāsadrūpaṃ) nor existence (na sanmayam). They appear like the seer and the seen (draṣṭṛdṛśyamivābhāti). Brahman (brahma) is established (sthitam) in this sameness (caitatsamaṃ).

etatsatyaparijñānaṃ yasyotpannamakhaṇḍitamna tasya pañcabhūtāni na dṛśyadraṣṭṛvibhramaḥ || 48 ||

English

For one who has attained the unbroken (akhaṇḍitam) knowledge (parijñānaṃ) of this truth (etatsatya), the five elements (pañcabhūtāni) do not exist, nor is there any confusion (vibhramaḥ) between the seer and the seen (dṛśyadraṣṭṛ).

tadā mayaivaṃ śuddhena tatkṛtaṃ brahmarūpiṇābrahmarūpādṛte kiṃcidetatkarturna yujyate || 49 ||

English

Then, by this pure (śuddhena) illusion (maya), everything is done (tatkṛtaṃ) by Brahman (brahmarūpiṇā). Without the form of Brahman (brahmarūpādṛte), nothing (kiṃcid) else (etat) can be the doer (karturna yujyate).

yadā sarvamidaṃ dṛśyaṃ jātaṃ brahma nirāmayamtadā brahmapadasthena mayātmaivaivamīkṣitaḥ || 50 ||

English

When all this visible (dṛśyaṃ) world (sarvamidaṃ) is born (jātaṃ) from Brahman (brahma) without defect (nirāmayam), then, established in the state of Brahman (brahmapadasthena), I (mayā) see (īkṣitaḥ) the self (ātmaiva) alone (evam) in this way (evam).

yadā punarahaṃ pañcabhūtānītyeva bhāsayan | bhavāmi jaḍa evāhaṃ tadā cetāmi kiṃ kila || 51 ||

English

When I consider myself to be merely the five elements, I become inert. Then, what do I comprehend?

supto'smīti dṛḍhaṃ bhāvaṃ buddhvāṃścetano'pi san | naidram evaityalam jāḍyaṃ lasaccetati kiṃcana || 52 ||

English

Even if one is conscious and wise, firmly believing 'I am asleep,' one attains only inertia. What does one comprehend then?

yastu jñānaprabuddhātmā dehastasyādhibhautikaḥ | śāmyatyudeti vimalo bodhātmaivātivāhikaḥ || 53 ||

English

One whose self is awakened by knowledge, their body becomes pure and radiant, transcending the material.

ātivāhikadehena tena bodhātmanāṇunā | bṛhatā vā yathākāmaṃ nirvāṇātmāvatiṣṭhate || 54 ||

English

With that transcendent body, the self of knowledge, whether minute or vast, abides in the state of liberation.

bodhadehena hṛdayaṃ śilānāmapyabhedinām | praviśyāśu viniryāti yāti pātālamambaram || 55 ||

English

With the body of knowledge, one can enter and exit the hearts of even the hardest stones, traveling to the underworld and the sky.

tasmānmayā purā rāma bodhadēhēna tattadā| tathā kṛtamanantēna cinmayavyōmarūpiṇā || 56 ||

English

Therefore, O Rama, in the past, I, with my body of pure consciousness, did that action in that manner.

vajrapāṣāṇapātālanabhōmbaragamāgamān| kurvatastādṛśasyāśu na vighna upajāyatē || 57 ||

English

For one who performs actions like the movement of thunderbolts, stones, the underworld, and the sky, no obstacles arise quickly.

bodhamātraśarīrēṇa yāvadāstē jaḍēṣvasau| padārthēṣu tathābhūtastāvattatrāvatiṣṭhatē || 58 ||

English

As long as the body of pure consciousness remains in inert objects, it stays there in that form.

svēcchayaiva calitvātha tatō'nyatra prayāti cēt| taccaiava sthitiṃ yāti tattathaivāgatiryathā || 59 ||

English

If, by its own will, it moves from there to another place, it attains stability there just as it had before.

bodhamātraṃ vidurdēhamātivāhikamavyayam| idānīṃ tvaṃ tamēvēha budhō'nubhavasi svayam || 60 ||

English

The wise know the body of pure consciousness to be transcendental and imperishable. Now, you yourself experience that very consciousness here.

cinmātravyomarūpo'smītyarkādāviti bodhataḥ | ātmaivāstamupānītaḥ sannevāsannivātmanā || 61 ||

English

I am the pure consciousness that pervades the sky, as realized from the sun and other sources of knowledge. The self itself is brought to rest, as if it were both existent and non-existent.

sthitaṃ svapnādijagati tamasevāsateva ca | āvṛteneva vānyāsāmalabhyena satā dṛśam || 62 ||

English

Established in the dream-like world, it appears as darkness and non-existence. It is as if covered, unattainable by others, and visible to the wise.

63

taraṅgalekhayāṅgārasaritaḥ svāṅgalagnayā | manorājyaśriyevāśuk prōtpannastadvadēhayā || 63 ||

English

Like the waves of a river flowing with embers, the glory of the mind's kingdom arises quickly, as if embodied in that form.

kajjalālikayā vahnivipinaṃ puṣpaśōbhayā | phullasthalāmbujākāraṃ kiṃśukāśōkarūpayā || 64 ||

English

With the beauty of flowers, the forest of fire appears like a blooming lotus pond, with the form of the kinsuka and ashoka trees.

vitatārambhayāpyuccairjvālājvalatayeddhayā | upōtthāyāṅga galitaṃ khalalakṣmyēva līlayā || 65 ||

English

With the lofty beginning and the blazing flames, it rises and melts away like the fickle fortune, playfully.

English

Even in the subtlest particle, this brilliance is seen, O Rama, thus the glory of the world is perceived by me. That other glory is not from the supreme consciousness; it is like a dream, an example of the ancient mountains here.
