yattanmahāvanaṃ proktaṃ guruśāstrakramādi tat yadudyatāste grāsārthaṃ janā bhogārthino hi te || 3 ||
That which is called the great forest is taught by the sequence of the scriptures of the guru. Those who are eager for enjoyment are indeed ready for consumption.
May the waves of enjoyment come to an end for my miserly people. One who is indifferent to the purpose of action engages in scriptures and other activities.
bhogārthaṃ saṃpravṛtto'pi prāpnotyabhyāsataḥ kramāt jantuścintitamevādyapadaṃ paravaśo'pi san || 5 ||
Even though one is engaged in the pursuit of enjoyment, through practice and gradually, one attains the original state of thought, even while being under the control of others.
Others proceed differently with the scriptures due to their desires. They attain something else instead of the original jewel, like those who are divided.
People, influenced by good conduct, doubt the attainment of worldly pleasures. Due to ignorance of the truth, doubts arise from scriptures and other sources.
One who strives for worldly pleasures attains both worldly pleasures and liberation. Therefore, one who seeks wealth obtains the wish-fulfilling gem from the forest, just like that.
kecikkāmaṃ kecidarthaṃ keciddharmatrayaṃ tu vā kecinmokṣamaśeṣaṃ ca labhante śāstratastathā || 14 ||
Some attain desires, some attain wealth, some attain the threefold dharma, and some attain complete liberation, all according to the scriptures.
vargatrayopadeśo hi śāstrādiṣvasti rāghava brahmaprāptistvavācyatvānnāsti tacchāsaneṣvapi || 15 ||
O Raghava, the teachings of the threefold path are indeed found in the scriptures. However, the attainment of Brahman is inexpressible, and it is not found even in the scriptures.
This supreme knowledge is not attained from scriptures, nor from the words of the guru, nor from charity, nor from the worship of God. It is attained beyond all these.
Just as discernment arises in the body from the observation of these two, so too, from the discernment of the scripture, the knowledge of the knowable arises naturally.
Just as a child, by rubbing one mud clod against another in water, eventually cleans both hands, similarly, by rubbing the impurities of the mind through the practice of scriptural teachings, one attains the highest purity.
Similarly, by the multitude of scriptural teachings, the wise one, by rubbing away the mental impurities through self-inquiry, attains the highest purity.
The knowledge of the self is attained by the outpouring of the meaning of the great sayings, just as the sweetness of sugarcane is experienced directly.
Just as the world is experienced through the contact of light and sight, similarly, self-knowledge is attained through the contact of the heard and the hearer.
trivargamātrasiddhyai yanna mokṣāya ca tacchrutam vipulaśrutacarcāsu tucchamaśrutameva tat || 31 ||
That which is heard only for the attainment of the three worldly goals and not for liberation is considered insignificant even in extensive scriptural discussions.
Whatever is heard for the purpose of knowledge, that knowledge is equality. Where there is equality, deep sleep arises, and from that state, wakefulness is born.
evaṃ hi sarvametattacchāstrādeḥ samavāpyate tasmātsarvaprayatnena śāstrādyabhyāsamāharet || 33 ||
Thus, all this is attained from the scriptures and other sources. Therefore, one should strive with all effort to practice the scriptures and other sources.
By the power of contemplating the meaning of the scriptures, through the words of the gurus, by good company, through discipline and tranquility, O Rama, that which is beyond the entire universe, the supreme Lord, the primordial bliss, is attained.
