śrīrāma uvāca | padārthā dvividhāḥ santi mūrtāmūrtā jagattraye | yatra sapratighāḥ kecitkecidapratighā api || 1 ||

English

Shri Rama said: There are two kinds of entities in the three worlds, tangible and intangible. Some of them have resistance, while others do not.

tānihāpratighānāhurnānyonyaṃ vellayanti ye | tāṃśca sapratighānāhuranyonyaṃ vellayanti ye || 2 ||

English

Those are called non-resistant which do not interact with each other. Those are called resistant which interact with each other.

iha sapratighānāṃ tu dṛṣṭamanyonyavellanaṃ | na tvapratigharūpāṇāṃ keṣāṃcidapi kiṃcana || 3 ||

English

Here, the interaction of resistant entities with each other is observed. However, there is no such interaction observed among non-resistant entities.

tatra saṃvedanaṃ nāma yadidaṃ candramanḍale | itaḥ patatyapratighaṃ tatsarveṇānubhūyate || 4 ||

English

There, the sensation called perception is that which falls from the moon's sphere. That non-resistant entity is experienced by all.

ardhaprabuddhasaṃkalpavikalpādvaitakalpitam | vadāmyabhyupagamyedaṃ na tu bodhadashāsthitam || 5 ||

English

I explain this as imagined from the duality of half-awakened resolve and doubt, but not as established in the state of enlightenment.

kaḥ prāṇamārutaḥ kṣobhaṃ janayatyāśayasthitaḥ | praveśanirgamamayaṃ kathaṃ vā vada me prabho || 6 ||

English

Which vital air, residing in the heart, causes agitation? How does it enter and exit? Please tell me, O Lord.

kathamapratighaṃ nāma vedaṇaṃ pratighātmakam | imaṃ dehaṃ cālayati bhāraṃ bhāraharo yathā || 7 ||

English

How does the unresisting sensation, which is of the nature of resistance, move this body, like a burden-bearer carrying a load?

yadi sapratighaṃ vastu vellatyapratighātmakam | kathaṃ saṃvittimātreṇa puṃsaḥ śailo na valgati || 8 ||

English

If a resisting object moves due to an unresisting force, how does a mountain not move by mere consciousness of a person?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | vikāsamatha saṃkocamatra nālī hṛdi sthitā | yadā yāti tadā prāṇaśchedairāyāti yāti ca || 9 ||

English

Vasishtha said: The tube situated in the heart expands and contracts. When it moves, the vital air, through its divisions, comes and goes.

bāhyopaskarabhastrāyāṃ yathākāśāspadātmakaḥ | vāyuryātyapi cāyāti tathātra spandanaṃ hṛdi || 10 ||

English

Just as the air in a bellows, which is of the nature of space, comes and goes, so does the pulsation in the heart.

śrīrāma uvāca | bahirbhastrāmayaskāraḥ saṃkocanavikāsanaiḥ | yojayatyāntaraṃ nāḍīṃ kaścālayati cālakaḥ || 11 ||

English

Sri Rama said: The external air, through contraction and expansion, connects the inner tube; who moves it, the mover?

śataṃ kathaṃ bhavedekaṃ kathamekaṃ śataṃ bhavet | kathaṃ sa cetanā ete kāṣṭhaloṣṭopalādayaḥ || 12 ||

English

How can one become a hundred, and how can a hundred become one? How can these inert objects like wood, clod, and stone have consciousness?

kasmānn na sthāvaraṃ vastu praspandyapi camatkṛtam | vastu jaṅgamameveha spandi mātreva kiṃ vad || 13 ||

English

Why is an inert object not wonderful even though it vibrates? Here, even a moving object is only vibrating; what do you say?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | antaḥsaṃvedanaṃ nāma cālayatyāntraveṣṭanam | bahirbhastrāmayaskāra iv loke'nuceṣṭanam || 14 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: The inner awareness, named consciousness, moves the bodily mechanism, just as the external air moves the bellows in the world.

śrīrāma uvāca | vāyvantrādiśarīrasthaṃ sarvaṃ sapratighaṃ mune | kathamapratighā saṃviccālayediti me vad || 15 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Sage, how can the immaterial consciousness move the material body, which is full of resistance? Please explain this to me.

saṃvidapratighākārā yadi sapratighātmakam | cālayedacaliṣyattaddūramambho yadicchayā || 16 ||

English

If the form of consciousness is endowed with resistance, then it can move the immovable water by its will.

sapratighāpratighayormitho yadi padārthayoḥ | vellanaṃ syāttadicchaiva kartṛkarmeṃdriyaiḥ kva kim || 17 ||

English

If there is a conflict between two objects with resistance, then the movement will be according to the will of the doer and the instrument. What is the use of the senses?

sapratighāpratighayoḥ śleṣo nāsti bahiryathā | tathaivāntarahaṃ manye śeṣaṃ kathaya me mune || 18 ||

English

Just as there is no union between two objects with resistance externally, so too there is no union internally. Tell me the rest, O sage.

antaḥ svayaṃ yoginā vā yathaitadanubhūyate | amūrtasyaiva mūrteṇa vellanaṃ tadvadāśu me || 19 ||

English

Whether internally or by a yogi, how this is experienced, tell me quickly how the formless is moved by the form.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sarvasaṃdehavṛkṣāṇāṃ mūlakāṣamidaṃ vacaḥ | sarvaikatānubhūtyarthaṃ śrṇu śravaṇabhūṣaṇam || 20 ||

English

Vasishtha said: This speech is the axe that cuts the root of all trees of doubt. Listen to this ornament of hearing for the experience of universal oneness.

śuddhaṃ saṃvinmayaṃ sarvaṃ śāntamapratighātmakam | padārthajātaṃ pṛthvyādi svapnasankalpayoriva || 22 ||

English

Everything is pure, made of consciousness, calm, and non-obstructive. The entirety of objects, starting from the earth, is like a dream or imagination.

ādāvante ca nāstīdaṃ kāraṇābhāvato'khilam | bhrāntyātmā vartamānāpi bhāti cittasvapnagā yathā || 23 ||

English

In the beginning and in the end, nothing exists due to the absence of cause. Even while existing, it appears like a dream due to delusion.

dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ | mahatā kāraṇaughaena bodhamapratighaṃ viduḥ || 24 ||

English

The sky, earth, wind, space, mountains, rivers, and directions are known to be non-obstructive knowledge due to the great multitude of causes.

antaḥkaraṇabhūtādi mṛtkāṣṭhadṛṣadādi vā | sarvaṃ śūnyamaśūnyaṃ ca cetanaṃ viddhi netarat || 25 ||

English

Know that everything, whether it is the inner organs, clay, wood, stones, or anything else, is both empty and non-empty, and is consciousness.

English

Listen to this story of Indra, which is an ornament to the ears. I have told you this before; what else can be described?

tathāpi vartamānoktapraśnabodhāya tacchṛṇu | yathedaṃ sarvamandyādi cidityeva tu bhotsyate || 27 ||

English

Nevertheless, listen to this for the understanding of the present question. Thus, everything from the beginning will be known as consciousness alone.

kasmiṃścitprāktanenaineva jagajjāle'bhvaddvijaḥ | tapovedakriyādhāro brahmanninduriti smṛtaḥ || 28 ||

English

In some ancient time, in the web of the world, there was a Brahmin named Indu, who was the support of austerity, Vedas, and rituals.

32

dhāraṇānāṃ samastānāṃ kā syāduttamasiddhidā | dhāraṇā yanmayāḥ santaḥ syāma sarveśvarā vayaṃ || 33 ||

English

iti te tatra saṃcintya baddhapadmāsanā daśa | idaṃ saṃcintayāmāsur nirvighne kandarodare || 34 ||

English

Thus, they contemplated there, sitting in the lotus position, and meditated on this in the unobstructed cave.

padmajādhiṣṭhitāśeṣajagaddhāraṇayā sthitāḥ | bhavāmaḥ padmajopetaṃ jagadrūpamavighnataḥ || 35 ||

English

We are established by the support of the lotus-born one, holding the entire universe, and we become the form of the universe without obstacles.

iti saṃcintya sabrahmajagaddhāraṇayā ciram | nimīlitadṛśastasthuste citraracitā iva || 36 ||

English

Thus, contemplating the entire universe as Brahman, they remained for a long time with their eyes closed, as if painted in a picture.

athaitaddhāraṇābaddhacittāste tāvadacyutāḥ | āsanmāsāndaśāṣṭau ca yāvatte tatra dehakāḥ || 37 ||

English

Dried up, they became skeletons, their limbs eaten by scavengers, they perished there like shadows under the sun.

ahaṃ brahmā jagaccedaṃ sargo'yaṃ bhuvanānvitaḥ | iti saṃpaśyatāṃ teṣāṃ dīrghakālo'bhyavartata || 39 ||

English

Thinking, 'I am Brahman, and this is the universe, this creation is endowed with worlds,' a long time passed for them.

tāni cittānyadehāni daśaikadhyānatastataḥ | saṃpannāni jagantyeva daśa dehāni vai pṛthak || 40 ||

English

Those disembodied minds, through single-pointed meditation, became complete and manifested as ten separate bodies in the world.

iti teṣāṃ cidicchā sā saṃpannā sakalaṃ jagat | atyantasvaccharūpaiva sthitā cākāravarjitā || 41 ||

English

Thus, their desire for consciousness is fulfilled, the entire world is pure and formless.

saṃvinmayatvājjagatāṃ teṣāṃ bhūmyacalādi tat | sarvaṃ cidātmakaṃ viddhi nau cedanyatkimucyatām || 42 ||

English

Due to the nature of pure consciousness, their world, including the earth and mountains, is all consciousness. If not, what else can be said?

kila yatrtrijagajjālaṃ teṣāṃ kimātma tattathā | saṃvidākāśaśūnyatvamātramevetaranna tat || 43 ||

English

Indeed, the web of the three worlds is their self. It is merely the emptiness of the consciousness-space, nothing else.

vidyate na yathā kiṃcit tarangaḥ salilādṛte | saṃvittattvādṛte tadvad vidyate calanādikam || 44 ||

English

Just as a wave does not exist without water, similarly, motion and other phenomena do not exist without the principle of consciousness.

aindavāni yathaitāni cinmayāni jaganti khe | tathā cinmayameteṣu kāṣṭhaloṣṭopalādyapi || 45 ||

English

Just as these celestial beings are full of consciousness in the sky, similarly, even in these objects like wood, clod, and stone, there is consciousness.
