śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | jāgratsvapne svapna eva jāgrattvamanugacchati | svapnajāgrati jāgrattu svapnatāmupagacchati || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: In the waking state, dreams follow the waking state; in the dream state, the waking state takes on the nature of dreams.
svapno jāgratpraviśati jāgratsvapnātprabudhyate | jāgratsvapnaṃ praviśati prabuddhaḥ svapnajāgrataḥ || 2 ||
The dream enters the waking state, and the waking state awakens from the dream. The awakened one enters the dream from the waking state.
jāgratsvapnavatā svapnaḥ svapna ityabhidhīyate | svapnajāgradvatā jāgrat jāgradityabhidhīyate || 3 ||
The dream is called a dream because it is like the waking state. The waking state is called the waking state because it is like the dream state.
tajjāgrajjāgratīveha na tu svapnaḥ kadācana | svapne svapno jāgradeva na tu jāgratkadācana || 4 ||
Here, the waking state is indeed the waking state, never a dream. In the dream, the dream is indeed the waking state, never the waking state.
laghukālātmakaḥ svapnaḥ sarvadaiva hi jāgrati | laghukālātmakaṃ jāgratsvapnakāle sadaiva ca || 5 ||
The dream is always of short duration, yet it is always in the waking state. The waking state is always of short duration in the dream state.
na jāgratsvapnayorbhedaḥ kaścanāsti kadācana | ekasyāvasaro'nyatra dvayorapi na sanmayaḥ || 6 ||
There is no difference between the waking and dream states at any time. The opportunity for one is not the reality of the other two.
mṛtiprabodhasamaye jāgratsvapnaḥ praśāmyati | svapnānubhavabodhe ca śūnya evātibhāsvaraḥ || 7 ||
At the time of awakening from death, the waking dream subsides. In the awareness of the dream experience, it appears as void.
jīvataḥ svapnasamaye mṛtibodhodayaṃ vinā | paralokātmakaṃ jāgratkiṃcanāpi na dṛśyate || 8 ||
In the dream state of a living being, without the arising of the awareness of death, the waking state does not appear as the other world.
sthite jīvitabodhe'smiñchūnye nānāmayātmani | paralokātmakaḥ svapnaḥ kaścanāpi na dṛśyate || 9 ||
When the awareness of life is established in the void, which is diverse in nature, the dream of the other world is not seen.
ciccmatkṛtimātrātma yathā svapne jagattrayam | hṛdi sargātprabhṛtyeva tathaivābhāti jāgrati || 10 ||
Just as the three worlds appear in a dream as mere wonder-struck consciousness, so too they appear in the waking state from the creation in the heart.
santyevāsatyabhūtāni sphārāpi paramārthatḥ | nāstyevākāravatteyaṃ svapnoryāmiva jāgrati || 11 ||
Even though unreal entities appear to exist in reality, they do not truly exist, just like a dream in the waking state.
nānātmabhāsuramapi svapne śūnyaṃ yathā jagat | tathaiva jāgratyakhilaṃ vyomaivedaṃ cidātmakam || 12 ||
Just as the diverse appearances in a dream are ultimately void, so too is the entire waking world ultimately the void of pure consciousness.
cidvyomno hi svabhāvo'yaṃ yadidaṃ jagadambare | kacatītthamih sphāramāloka iva tejasaḥ || 13 ||
The nature of pure consciousness is such that this world appears in it like the reflection of light in the sky.
citeścamatkṛtiriyam jagannāmnī cakāsty alam | sahajā gagane kuḍye paramāṇau sthale jale || 14 ||
This wonder of pure consciousness, called the world, shines forth spontaneously in the sky, in a pot, in an atom, and in water.
bhrāntāvasatyarūpāyāṃ sthitāyāṃ satyavastuvat | ākāśamātradehāyāṃ ka iva enāṃ prati grahaḥ || 15 ||
When the unreal form, mistaken as real, is established as merely the sky, what attachment can there be towards it?
grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyarūpamāśūnyameva ca | sadastvevāsadevāstu jagadatrāṅga kiṃ grahaḥ || 16 ||
The form of the perceiver, the perceived, and the perception is indeed empty. What is the grasp of this world, which is both existent and non-existent?
itthamastvidamathānyathāstu vā maiva bhūdbhavatu ko'tra saṃbhamaḥ | ko'tra phalguni phale phalagraho buddhameva tadalaṃ vikalpanaiḥ || 17 ||
Whether it exists in this way or in another way, let it be or not be, what is the confusion here? What is the grasp of the result in the insignificant, let the intellect be content with alternatives.
