tāpas uvāca | gantumevaṃ vicāryāhaṃ tatastatsaṃvidaikatām | pravṛttaścauttamābjena saurabheṇeva saurabham || 1 ||

English

The ascetic said: Having thus decided to go, I became one with that consciousness, like the fragrance of the best lotus flower.

yāvattaccetanaṃ tasya tamojodhātumatyajampravṛttaṃ bāhyasaṃvittau samastendriyasaṃvidā || 2 ||

English

As long as that consciousness was engrossed in the darkness of ignorance, it was engaged in external awareness through all the senses.

saṃvidaṃ saṃvidā gṛhṇaṃstānbāhye'ntarapi kṣaṇāt | ahaṃ prasṛtavāṃstatra tailabindurivāmbhasi || 3 ||

English

Grasping the consciousness with consciousness, both external and internal, in an instant, I spread out there like a drop of oil in water.

tatsaṃvidi tathaivātha yāvatpariṇamāmyaham | bhuvanaṃ dṛṣṭavāṃstāvatsarvaṃ dviguṇitaṃ sthitam || 4 ||

English

In that consciousness, as I transformed, I saw the entire universe doubled.

diśo dviguṇatāṃ yātāstapatastapanāvubhau | bhūmaṇḍale dve saṃpanne dve vai dyāvau samutthite || 5 ||

English

The directions became doubled, both the suns shone, two earths were formed, and two heavens arose.

vadanapratibimbe dve darpaṇapratibimbite | yathā bhātastathā bhāte miśrite te jagaccitam || 6 ||

English

Just as two reflections in a mirror appear as one, so do the world and consciousness appear as one when mixed.

tailavadbhāti kośasthaṃ yacchetana tiladvaye | tasmiñjagaddvayaṃ tattattathā bhāti vimiśritam || 7 ||

English

Just as oil appears in a vessel containing sesame seeds, so does the duality of the world appear mixed in consciousness.

saṃviddvitayakośastha miśrite apyamiśrite | te ubhe jagatī bhāte same kṣīrajale yathā || 8 ||

English

Even when mixed or unmixed, the two consciousnesses appear as the world, just as milk and water appear the same when mixed.

nimeṣāddṛṣṭamātreṇa sā tatsaṃvinmayā tataḥ | sakalaivātmatāṃ nītā parimityeva saṃvidā || 9 ||

English

By merely seeing in a moment, she becomes that consciousness itself. Thus, she is led to the complete selfhood by the limitation of consciousness.

ṛturṛtvantareṇeva saritevālpikā sarit | vātenāmodalekheva dhūmalekheva vārmucā || 10 ||

English

Like a season changing to another, like a small river merging into a larger one, like a fragrance carried by the wind, like smoke dissolving into the air.

ekatvenāśu saṃvitteryayau me jagadekatām | durdṛṣṭerdvivapuścandraḥ sudṛṣṭerekatāmiva || 11 ||

English

Through the immediate realization of unity, the world appeared to me as one | Just as the moon appears as one to those with clear vision, but as two to those with defective vision

tato me taccitisthasya svaṃ vivekamanujjhataḥ | alpībhūtaḥ svasaṃkalpastatsaṃkalpasthitiṃ gataḥ || 12 ||

English

Then, as I, situated in that consciousness, gave up my own discrimination, my own resolve diminished and took the form of that resolve

taccittavṛttyaiva tato bāhyamālokayanstatataḥ | abhuñji taddinācāraṃ tattaddhṛdayamatyajan || 13 ||

English

Then, by the very activity of that consciousness, I observed the external world and experienced the daily routine, abandoning the heart's desires

tato yadṛcchayaivāsau śanairnidrākulo'bhavat | padmaḥ sāyamivāpīya payo bhuktvānnamucchramḥ || 14 ||

English

Then, by chance, he gradually became overwhelmed by sleep, like a lotus that drinks water in the evening and, having consumed food, becomes fatigued

prasṛtaṃ dignikuñjeṣu rūpālokakriyākaram | saṃjahāra bahiścittaṃ sāyamarko ruciṃ yathā || 15 ||

English

He withdrew his external consciousness, which was engaged in various activities in different directions, just as the setting sun withdraws its light

sah cittena tāstasya samastendriyavṛttayaḥ hṛtkoshamaviśañchannāḥ kūrmasyevāṅgasandhayaḥ || 16 ||

English

With the mind and all the senses withdrawn, like the limbs of a tortoise, they entered the heart.

mudritā hṛdayākārāst āsaṃścakṣurādayaḥ loṣṭarūpā mṛtāveva lipikarmārpitā iva || 17 ||

English

Sealed in the form of the heart, those senses like the eyes became like lifeless clay, as if offered to the act of writing.

ahaṃ taccittavṛttyaiva sahasonnamya tatsthitaḥ taccittānuvidhāyitvāttattaddhṛdayamāviśam || 18 ||

English

I, by the sudden rise of that mental state, stood there, and by following that mind, I entered that heart.

saṃhṛtya bāhyānubhavamantareva tadojasi kṣaṇamanvabhavaṃ śūnyaṃ suṣuptaṃ talpakomale || 19 ||

English

Withdrawing the external experiences within, I experienced a moment of emptiness, like deep sleep on a soft bed.

klamānnapānabahulairnibiḍāsvapi nāḍiṣu suṣirāsveva vā vāyurna niryātyeva yāti ca || 20 ||

English

Even with the fatigue of drinking much water, the breath neither enters nor exits the dense or hollow channels.

yadā tadātmakātmaikaparo hṛdi sahasthitamapradhānīkarotyetaccittaṃ svārthasvabhāvataḥ || 21 ||

English

When the mind, which is the sole essence of the self, resides in the heart and makes everything else insignificant, it is due to its inherent nature.

svārthamātro'dya tasyāntaḥ parakṛtyaṃ na kasyacitkacati svārthasattāyāmetadeva vapuryataḥ || 22 ||

English

Today, the self's inherent nature alone exists within, and it does not belong to anyone else. This very form is due to the existence of the self's inherent nature.

śrīrāma uvācamanaḥ prāṇavaśādeva manute kiṃ mahāmunesvarūpaṃ manaso nāsti tasmāttatkevalaṃ ca kim || 23 ||

English

Sri Rama said: The mind, due to the influence of the life force, thinks of the form of the great sage. Therefore, what is the mind alone, and what is it?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācadeha eveha nāstyeva svānubhūto'pyayaṃ nijaḥmanasaḥ kalpanātmedaṃ vapuḥ svapne giriryathā || 24 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: This body does not exist here, even though it is experienced as one's own. This form is merely an imagination of the mind, like a mountain in a dream.

taccittamapi nāstyeva cetyārthābhāvayogataḥsargādau kāraṇābhāvāddṛśyānutpattihetutaḥ || 25 ||

English

That mind also does not exist, because there is no meaning in its existence. From the beginning of creation, there is no cause for the manifestation of the visible world.

ataḥ sarvamidaṃ brahma tacca sarvātmakaṃ yadā | tadā viśvamidaṃ viṣvagastyeva ca yathāsthitam || 26 ||

English

Therefore, all this is Brahman, and that is all-pervading. When that is so, then this universe exists as it is, pervading everywhere.

asti cittādi dehādi tadbrahmaiva ca tadvidām | yādṛktattadvidāmetadasmākaṃ viṣaye na tat || 27 ||

English

There exists the mind and the body, and that is indeed Brahman for the knowers. As it is, so it is known to us, but it is not an object of our senses.

yathedaṃ trijagadbrahma yatheti vividhātmakam | atremāṃ rājaputra tvaṃ varṇyamānaṃ kramaṃ śrṛṇu || 28 ||

English

As this threefold world is Brahman, so it is of various forms. O Prince, listen to the sequence being described here.

asti cinmātramamalamanantākāśarūpi yat | sarvadā sarvarūpātma na jaganna ca dṛśyatā || 29 ||

English

There exists pure consciousness, stainless, infinite, and of the form of endless space. Always of all forms, it is neither the world nor seen.

sarvavittvāttu tenedaṃ manastvaṃ cetitaṃ svataḥ | rūpamatyajatā śuddhaṃ buddhamādhivivarjitam || 30 ||

English

Due to its all-knowing nature, by it, this mind is known by itself. Having abandoned all forms, it is pure, enlightened, and free from ignorance.

manasā kalpitaṃ tena yadvai saraṇamātmanaḥ | tadetatprāṇapavanaṃ viddhi vedyavidāṃ vara || 31 ||

English

That which is imagined by the mind and is the refuge of the self, know that to be the vital air, O best among the knowers of the knowable.

prāṇataiṣā yathā tena kalpitevānubhūyate | tathaivendriyadehādi dikkālakalanādi ca || 32 ||

English

Just as the vital air is imagined to be experienced by that, so also are the senses, body, directions, time, and other measurements.

iti viśvamidaṃ viṣvak cittamātramakhaṇḍitam | cittaṃ tu citparaṃ brahma tasmādbrahmedamātatam || 33 ||

English

Thus, this entire universe is nothing but the undivided mind. The mind itself is the supreme consciousness, Brahman. Therefore, this universe is pervaded by Brahman.

anākāramanādyantamanābhāsamanāmayam | śāntaṃ cinmātrasanmātraṃ brahmaivedaṃ jagadvapuḥ || 34 ||

English

Formless, without beginning or end, without appearance, without defect, peaceful, and purely conscious, this universe is indeed Brahman.

sarvaśakti paraṃ brahma manaḥśaktyā yathā sthitam | yatra tatra tathā rūpaṃ svamevānubhavaty alam || 35 ||

English

The supreme Brahman, which is all-powerful, is established by the power of the mind. Wherever it is, it experiences its own form sufficiently.

saṃkalpātma mano brahma saṃkalpayati yadyathā | tattathaivānubhavati siddhamābālamīdṛśam || 36 ||

English

The mind, which is the essence of resolve, is Brahman; whatever it resolves, it experiences exactly that. Such is the established truth from ancient times.

prāṇīkṛtaḥ svayamayaṃ nanu cetasātmā dehīkṛtastribhuvanīkṛta eva nādyaḥ | dehīkṛtaḥ khavapureva girīkṛtaśca svapneṣu kalpitapurīṣvanubhūtametat || 37 ||

English

The self, which is the essence of consciousness, is embodied and becomes the three worlds. The embodied self is like a city in a dream, experienced as a mountain. This is the experience in dream-created cities.
