śrīrāma uvāca | tayordvayormuniśreṣṭha saṃpannaṃ kimatḥ param | paścādvipaścitostasya ruddhayorvai vipaścitoḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O best of sages, what is the ultimate result of the two who have attained perfection? Afterwards, what is the state of the wise one who has restrained the senses?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tayorekaścirābhyastavāsanāvivaśīkṛtaḥ | bhramandvīpeṣu dehaughaistāmeva padavīṃ gataḥ || 2 ||

English

Vasistha said: One of them, overcome by long-practiced desires, wanders in various bodies on different islands, attaining the same state.

tathaivāvaraṇāṃstyaktvā paramākāśakoṭare | paśyansaṃsāralakṣāṇi tathaivādyāpi saṃsthitaḥ || 3 ||

English

Similarly, having abandoned the coverings, he remains in the supreme space, seeing the signs of the world, just as before.

tayordvitīyaḥ svābhyastādādāvāsaṃgatervaśāt | tyaktavānprabhramaddhehairadya śaile mṛgaḥ sthitaḥ || 4 ||

English

The second one, due to the influence of non-attachment from the beginning, has abandoned the wandering bodies and now remains as a deer on a mountain.

śrīrāma uvāca | ekaiva vāsanā brahman yā caturṇāṃ sadoditā | nānātāṃ sā kathaṃ prāptā hīnottamaphalapradām || 5 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Brahman, how did the same desire, which is always spoken of for the four, attain diversity, giving inferior and superior results?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca svabhyastā vāsanā jantordeśakālakriyāvaśāt tanudārḍhyānyatāmeti ghanadārḍhyaiti nānyatām || 6 ||

English

Śrīvasiṣṭha said: The inherent tendencies of a person, influenced by place, time, and action, become firm and strong, but do not change into something else.

deśakālakriyādyetadekatā vāsanaiakatā tayoryadeva balavattadeva jayati kṣaṇāt || 7 ||

English

The unity of place, time, and action is the unity of tendencies. Whichever of these is stronger, it prevails instantly.

evaṃ vibhāgenaite'tra catvāraḥ samavasthitāḥ kṛṣyante dvāvavidyārthamanyo mukto mṛgo'paraḥ || 8 ||

English

Thus, by this division, four are situated here: two are drawn towards ignorance, one is liberated, and the other is a deer.

nādyāpi tairavidyāyā labdho'nto bhrāntibuddhibhiḥ ananteyamavidyeyamajñānaparibṛṃhitā || 9 ||

English

Even today, the end of ignorance has not been achieved by those with deluded minds. This ignorance is endless and enveloped in ignorance.

kṣipreṇa śāntā bhavati vijñānāloka āgate amūlameva galati timiraśrīrivodaye || 10 ||

English

Quickly, it becomes peaceful when the light of knowledge arrives. Just as darkness disappears at dawn, ignorance also vanishes.

kālenānyajagajjātaṃ śṛṇu vṛttaṃ vipaścitaḥ| tasmindūratare deśe kasmiṃścitsaṃsṛtibhrame || 11 ||

English

Listen, O wise one, to the account of the world born from time| In that distant land, in some cycle of transmigration

kvacidbrahmamahāvyomni kasmiṃściddṛśyamaṇḍale| tasya dṛśyātmanā prāpte vastuto brahmarūpiṇi || 12 ||

English

In some great expanse of Brahman, in some visible sphere| Having attained the true nature of the visible, in reality, it is Brahman

sa ekaḥ śubhasaṃgatyā viduṣāṃ madhyamāgataḥ| dṛśyaṃ yathāvadvijñāya brahmatāmalamāgataḥ || 13 ||

English

That one, by auspicious association, came among the wise| Having known the visible as it truly is, he attained the state of Brahman

tatraivāśu parijñānātsā'vidyā sa ca dehakaḥ| mṛgatṛṣṇāmbvivāśāntimāgatau rāgatantritau || 14 ||

English

There itself, quickly by knowledge, that ignorance and that body| Like the mirage water, they attained the end of desires, bound by passion

iti te sarvamākhyātaṃ vipaścicceṣṭitaṃ sphuṭam| anantaivamavidyeaṃ brahmavattanmayī yataḥ || 15 ||

English

Thus, everything has been clearly explained to you, O wise one| This endless ignorance is thus Brahman, because it is pervaded by Brahman

yena yatraiva varṣāṇāṃ lakṣalakṣāṇi gamyate | tatra tatra svabhāvena citā kimapi lakṣyate || 16 ||

English

Wherever one goes, even for millions of years, one sees only the nature of consciousness.

tadevāśvaparijñātaṃ mithyā vidyeti kathyate | parijñātaṃ tu tacchāntaṃ tathā brahmeti kathyate || 17 ||

English

That which is known as false knowledge is said to be a dream. That which is known as true knowledge is said to be Brahman.

bhedo na bhedastatrāyaṃ bhedo'yaṃ yanmayaḥ kila | tadbrahmaiva cidābhāsaṃ cidrūpaiva hi bhinnatā || 18 ||

English

There is no difference here, this difference is only due to the illusion of 'I'. That Brahman alone is the reflection of consciousness, and the difference is indeed the form of consciousness.

brahmāṇḍamaṇḍapasyāsya bhramatetyavipaścitā | labdho yugaśatairantona avidyāyā vipaścitā || 19 ||

English

The ignorant wander in the hall of the universe, thinking they have reached the end after hundreds of yugas, but the wise know there is no end to ignorance.

English

Shri Rama said: O wise one, why has the door of the universe not been attained by the wise? You have said this, O best of speakers, how is it so?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | jātenaiva viriñcena purā brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalam | dvābhyāmadhastādūrdhvātsvabhujābhyāṃ pravidāritam || 21 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: In the beginning, when Brahma was born, he split the cosmic egg into two parts with his hands, one above and one below.

bhāgastenordhvatastasmādatiadūrataraṃ gataḥ | ato bhāgo gato'dhastādatiadūratarāntaram || 22 ||

English

One part went very far above, and the other part went very far below.

tāvivāśritya tiṣṭhanti jalādyāvaraṇāstatḥ | ta eva ca tadādhārā lambante saṃsthitāstayoḥ || 23 ||

English

Relying on these two parts, the various coverings such as water exist. They are supported by these two parts and are established hanging.

etayormadhyamākāśaṃ viduraṇḍakapāṭayoḥ | apārāvāramānīlamidamālakṣyate tu yat || 24 ||

English

The space in the middle of these two parts of the cosmic egg is known to be boundless and blue. This is what is perceived.

jalādyāvaraṇāstatra na laganti na santi ca | taddhi nirmalamāśūnyamālānaṃ kalpaklṛptibhiḥ || 25 ||

English

The coverings such as water do not adhere there, nor do they exist. That is indeed pure and not empty, adorned with various creations.

tena mārgeṇa yāto'sau vipaścidṛkṣacakravat | avidyāyāḥ parīkṣārthamāmokṣamatidīkṣitaḥ || 26 ||

English

By that path, he, the wise one, went like the sun and the moon, highly initiated for the examination of ignorance for liberation.

brahmaivānantarūpeyamavidyā tanmayī yataḥ | ato'sti sā'parijñātā parijñātā na vidyate || 27 ||

English

This ignorance is indeed Brahman itself, having infinite forms, because it is pervaded by That. Therefore, it exists as unrecognized; when recognized, it does not exist.

vipaścit iti prāpya dūrāddūraṃ pare'mbare | jagadrūpeṣvavidyāyā bhramantyanyeṣu keṣucit || 28 ||

English

Having attained the status of a wise one, some wander far and wide in the highest realm, in the various forms of the world due to ignorance.

kaścinmukto mṛgaḥ kaścitkaucidadyāpi tau kvacit | bhramataḥ prāktanānalpasanskāravivaśīkṛtau || 29 ||

English

Some are liberated, some are like deer, some are still wandering even today, those two are somewhere, wandering due to their past subtle impressions.

English

Sri Rama said: In what kinds of worlds and where, O sage, do those wise ones wander? Tell me, if you have compassion for me.

kiyatyadhvani saṃsārāste jātā yeṣu te mune | mahadetadihaāścaryamasmākaṃ kathitaṃ tvayā || 31 ||

English

O sage, how many worlds have been created in which you have been born? This is a great wonder that you have told us.

32

English

Vasishtha said: O Rama, both the wise ones are established in the two worlds. They do not come within our range even with effort.

tṛtīyo mṛgatāṃ yāto vipaścidyatra tiṣṭhati | sa kadācit sasaṃsāro gocare no'vatiṣṭhatē || 33 ||

English

The third one has become a deer where the wise one resides. Sometimes, with the world, he does not stay within reach.

śrīrāma uvāca | vipaścinmṛgatāṃ yāto yasmiñjagati saṃsthitaḥ | tajjagatkva mahābuddhe yathāvatkathayeti me || 34 ||

English

Rama said: O great sage, where is that world in which the wise one has become a deer and resides? Please tell me in detail.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dūrāddūrataraṃ gatvā parabrahma mahāmbare | mṛgo vipaścijjagati sa yasmiṃstajjagacchaṇu || 35 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Going far beyond the far, in the great expanse of the Supreme Brahman, the deer, which is the wise one, resides in that world.

tadidaṃ viddhi trijagadihāsau saṃsthito mṛgaḥ | idaṃ tatparamākāśaṃ dūradūre jagatsthitam || 36 ||

English

Know this, the three worlds are established here as a deer | This is that supreme space, situated far away in the world || 36 ||

śrīrāma uvāca | vipaścidasmādevāsau jagatastāṃ gatiṃ gataḥ | ihaivādya mṛgo jātaḥ kathametatsamañjasam || 37 ||

English

Sri Rama said: The wise one has attained that state of the world from this very place | Here itself, a deer has been born today, how is this appropriate? || 37 ||

English

Those many various forms, unestablished and with destruction, interwoven and seen as if they are real, like earthly beings || 39 ||

tatra kasmiṃścidanyasminmārge'sminniva tiṣṭhati | yadvṛttaṃ kathitaṃ rāma tadetadbhavate mayā || 40 ||

English

In that, in some other path, it remains as if in this path | What has been described, O Rama, that is what happens to me || 40 ||

vipashchito'nyasamsaare dehairbhrantaa digantaraan | taananantaambare vyomni taavatkaalamakhinnadheeh || 41 ||

English

The wise ones, confused by other existences and bodies, wander in different directions in the infinite sky for a long time without weariness.

ihaiva harinnaa jaatah kasminchidgirikandare | kaakataaliyayogena bhrantvaa bhoorijagadbhramam || 42 ||

English

Right here, a deer is born in some mountain cave, and due to the illusion of the crow and the palm tree, it wanders greatly in the world.

sa jaganti bhramandure yasminssarge mrigah sthitah | sasargo'yamiti vyomni kaakataaliyavatsthitam || 43 ||

English

In this world, which is full of confusion, the deer stands, and this creation is like the illusion of the crow and the palm tree in the sky.
