सहचरसहचर्यः क्रमेणोचुः | निर्गुणस्य बकस्यास्य गुण एकोऽस्ति दृश्यताम् | यत्प्रावृषं स्मारयति प्रावृट् प्रावृडिति ब्रुवन् || १ ||

sahacarasahacaryaḥ krameṇocuḥ | nirguṇasya bakasyāsya guṇa eko'sti dṛśyatām | yatprāvṛṣaṃ smārayati prāvṛṭ prāvṛḍiti bruvan || 1 ||

English

The companions gradually said: See the one quality of this worthless crane, that he reminds us of the rainy season by saying 'Pravrit, Pravrit.'

सहचर धीरे-धीरे कहने लगे: इस निर्गुण बगुले का एक गुण देखो, जो प्रावृट (वर्षा ऋतु) की याद दिलाता है 'प्रावृट, प्रावृट' कहकर।

बक हंस इवाभासि सरःस्थो मद्गुसौहृदम् | नृशंसत्वं च वाणीं च त्यक्त्वा हंसो भव स्फुटम् || २ ||

baka haṃsa ivābhāsi sarasṭho madgusauhṛdam | nṛśaṃsatvaṃ ca vāṇīṃ ca tyaktvā haṃso bhava sphuṭam || 2 ||

English

O crane, you appear like a swan in the lake, enjoying the friendship of the intoxicated cows. Abandon your cruelty and harsh speech, and truly become a swan.

हिन्दी

हे बगुला, तुम झील में हंस की तरह दिखते हो, मतवाली गायों के साथ मित्रता का आनंद लेते हुए। अपनी क्रूरता और कठोर वाणी को छोड़कर, सचमुच हंस बन जाओ।

गम्भीरं वारिगर्भं प्रसृतजलचरं ये प्रविश्य प्रविश्य प्राङ्मतत्स्यान्प्रोतचञ्चवश्चतुरतर परं जग्धवन्तो विदग्धाः ते केनाप्यद्य दिष्ट्या मृततिमिगमिताः कालयुक्ते महिम्ना नाक्रामन्ति क्रमस्थाः सुहरमपि पुरः पङ्गवो मद्गवोऽमी || ३ ||

gambhīraṃ vārigarbhaṃ prasṛtajalacaraṃ ye praviśya praviśya prāṅmatatsyānprotacañcavaścaturatara paraṃ jagdhavanto vidagdhāḥ te kenāpyadya diṣṭyā mṛtatimigamitāḥ kālayukte mahimnā nākrāmanti kramasthāḥ suharamapi puraḥ paṅgavo madgavo'mī || 3 ||

English

Those who, entering the deep water body, full of moving aquatic creatures, cleverly catch the swiftly moving fish with great skill, do not come forward even a little bit now, having met their end due to fate, with the power of time. We are the lame cows.

हिन्दी

जो गहरे जलाशय में प्रवेश करके, जिसमें चलते-फिरते जलचर हैं, चतुराई से तेजी से तैरती मछलियों को पकड़ते हैं, वे अब किसी भी तरह से थोड़ा भी आगे नहीं आते, क्योंकि उन्होंने अपने अंत को प्राप्त कर लिया है, समय की शक्ति से। हम लंगड़ी गायें हैं।

एवं विहन्यते लोकः स्वार्थेनेति प्रदर्शयन् | मद्गुर्मद्गुरुतां यात इत्येवं स्तौति दुर्जनः || ४ ||

evaṃ vihanyate lokaḥ svārtheneiti pradarśayan | madgurmadgurutāṃ yāta ityevaṃ stauti durjanaḥ || 4 ||

English

Thus, the world is destroyed by self-interest, as demonstrated. The wicked praise, saying, 'May you attain the status of our teacher.'

हिन्दी

इस प्रकार, स्वार्थ से संसार नष्ट होता है, जैसा कि दिखाया गया है। दुष्ट लोग कहते हैं, 'आप हमारे गुरु की स्थिति प्राप्त करें।'

उत्कन्धरो विततनिर्मलचारुपक्षो हंसोऽयमत्र नभसीति जनैः प्रतीतः | गृह्णाति पल्वलजलाच्छफरीं यदासौ ज्ञातस्तदा खलु बकोऽयमितीह लोकैः || ५ ||

utkandharo vitatanirmalacārupaṣo haṃso'yamatra nabhasīti janaiḥ pratītaḥ | gṛhṇāti palvalajalācchapharīṃ yadāsau jñātastadā khalu bako'yamitīha lokaiḥ || 5 ||

English

This swan with a raised neck and beautiful, spread-out, pure wings is recognized by people as a sky-dweller. When it catches a fish from the pond water, it is then known to be a heron by the people here.

हिन्दी

यह हंस उठी हुई गर्दन और सुंदर, फैले हुए, शुद्ध पंखों वाला लोगों द्वारा आकाश में रहने वाला माना जाता है। जब यह तालाब के पानी से मछली पकड़ता है, तब यहाँ के लोगों द्वारा यह बगुला माना जाता है।

अतिबहुकालविलोलानवलोक्य बकांस्तपोदम्भान् | अत्रैवातिमिरस्थांस्तटवनिता विस्मिता धूर्तान् || ६ ||

atibahukālavilolānavalokya bakāṃstapodambhān | atraivātimirasthāṃstaṭavanitā vismitā dhūrtān || 6 ||

English

Seeing the herons (बक) who are extremely unsteady for a very long time, the women of the riverbank are amazed at these deceitful ones who are in deep darkness here.

हिन्दी

बहुत लंबे समय तक अत्यंत अस्थिर बगुलों को देखकर, नदी के किनारे की स्त्रियाँ इन धूर्तों पर आश्चर्यचकित हैं जो यहाँ गहरे अंधकार में हैं।

अत्र जले हिमहेलाः पश्यैता अपहरन्ति सितपद्मान् | इच्छसि ता अनुगन्तुं नाहं ते वल्लभा व्रजामीति || ७ ||

atra jale himahelāḥ paśyaitā apaharanti sitapadmān | icchasi tā anugantuṃ nāhaṃ te vallabhā vrajāmīti || 7 ||

English

See here in the water, the ice-cold waves are taking away the white lotuses. If you wish to follow them, I am not your beloved, I will go away.

हिन्दी

यहाँ जल में देखो, बर्फीली लहरें सफेद कमलों को ले जा रही हैं। अगर तुम उनका पीछा करना चाहते हो, तो मैं तुम्हारी प्रिय नहीं हूँ, मैं चली जाऊँगी।

कुपितां तामनुनेतुं यत्नपरः पान्थ एष पथि कान्ताम् | अवलोकय नरनायक कुसुमलताकुहरकेलितीरवने || ८ ||

kupitāṃ tāmanunetuṃ yatnaparaḥ pāntha eṣa pathi kāntām | avalokaya naranāyaka kusumalatākuharakelitīravane || 8 ||

English

This traveler is eager to please his angry beloved on the path. Look, O hero, at the playful shore of the forest adorned with flowering vines.

हिन्दी

यह यात्री मार्ग पर अपनी कुपित प्रियतमा को मनाने के लिए उत्सुक है। देखो, हे नायक, फूलों की लताओं से सजे वन के खेल-भरे तट को।

इति हावभावविलसितविवलनकोपार्धदृष्टिहसितानि | कुर्वाणा वरवनिता कथयति ते दृश्यतां राजन् || ९ ||

iti hāvabhāvavilasitavivalanakopārdhadṛṣṭihasitāni | kurvāṇā varavanitā kathayati te dṛśyatāṃ rājan || 9 ||

English

Thus, displaying various expressions of anger, half-glances, and smiles, the noble lady speaks to you, O king, saying, 'Look at me.'

हिन्दी

इस प्रकार, विभिन्न क्रोध, अर्ध-दृष्टि और मुस्कानों के भाव दिखाते हुए, श्रेष्ठ स्त्री आपसे, हे राजन्, कहती है, 'मुझे देखो।'

बकमद्गुशरारूणां नित्यमेकौकसामपिसंकरोऽस्ति मिथो बुद्धेर्न मूर्खविदुषामिव || १० ||

bakamadguśarārūṇāṃ nityamekaukasāmapisaṃkaro'sti mitho buddherna mūrkhaviduṣāmiva || 10 ||

English

There is always a mixture of the red-colored feathers of cranes and geese, but there is no mutual understanding among fools and scholars.

हिन्दी

हंसों और बगुलों के लाल रंग के पंखों का हमेशा मिश्रण होता है, लेकिन मूर्खों और विद्वानों में परस्पर समझ नहीं होती।

चञ्चवग्रे खञ्जरीटस्य कीटः किटिकिटायतेदौर्भाग्यस्य पुराणस्य पताकेवोच्छ्रितोन्नते || ११ ||

cañcavagre khañjarīṭasya kīṭaḥ kiṭikiṭāyatedaurbhāgyasya purāṇasya patākevocchritonnate || 11 ||

English

The insect at the tip of the beak of the wagtail chirps, as if it were the ancient banner of good fortune raised high.

हिन्दी

खञ्जरीट की चोंच के अग्र भाग पर कीट किटिकिटाता है, जैसे पुराने सौभाग्य का ध्वज उठाया जा रहा हो।

तारं तीरतरौ स रौति तरलो यावद्बकः प्रोल्लसंस्तावत्पल्वलगोष्पदेऽम्बुकलिले यावद्बलाद्देहकम्मज्जन्त्या प्रियवक्षसीव निपुणं त्रातं शफर्या भयाद्धृद्भङ्गेनमहापदीह हि मृतेनान्यद्भवेत्सौख्यदम् || १२ ||

tāraṃ tīratarau sa rauti taralo yāvadbakaḥ prollasaṃstāvatpalvalagoṣpade'mbukalile yāvadbalāddehakammajjantyā priyavakṣasīva nipuṇaṃ trātaṃ śapharyā bhayāddhṛdbhaṅgenamahāpadīha hi mṛtenānyadbhavetsaukhyadam || 12 ||

English

The trembling crane cries out on the riverbank, praising the lotus pond, until the frog, fearful of the heart-breaking danger, skillfully saves itself by diving into the water.

हिन्दी

काँपता हुआ सारस नदी के किनारे पर चिल्लाता है, कमल के तालाब की प्रशंसा करता है, जब तक कि डर के मारे हृदय-विदारक खतरे से मेढक कुशलतापूर्वक अपने आप को पानी में डुबकी लगाकर बचा नहीं लेता।

बकाजगरमद्गूनां हृदि या प्राणिनां धृतिःअचर्वितनिगीर्णानां मन्ये निद्रोपमैव सा || १३ ||

bakājagaramadgūnāṃ hṛdi yā prāṇināṃ dhṛtiḥacarvitanigīrṇānāṃ manye nidropamaiva sā || 13 ||

English

The fortitude in the hearts of living beings, who are swallowed by the intoxicated crane and crocodile, I consider to be like sleep.

हिन्दी

जो प्राणी मतवाले बगुले और मगरमच्छ द्वारा निगले जाते हैं, उनके हृदय में जो धैर्य होता है, मैं उसे नींद के समान मानता हूँ।

आसन्नमद्गुबकगृध्रबिडालसर्पदृष्ट्या भयं भवति यत्सलिलाशयानाम्तस्याग्रतस्तृणमिवाशनिपातभङ्गो जातिस्मरेण विदुषोक्तमदः पुरा मे || १४ ||

āsannamadgubakagṛdhrabiḍālasarpadṛṣṭyā bhayaṃ bhavati yatsalilāśayānāmtasyāgratastṛṇamivāśanipātabhaṅgo jātismareṇa viduṣoktamadaḥ purā me || 14 ||

English

The fear that arises from the sight of an approaching intoxicated crane, vulture, cat, and snake, for those dwelling in the water, is like the breaking of a blade of grass by a thunderbolt, as once told to me by a wise man who remembered his past lives.

हिन्दी

मतवाले बगुले, गिद्ध, बिल्ली और साँप के नजदीक आने से उत्पन्न डर, जो पानी में रहने वालों के लिए होता है, वह एक तिनके के टूटने के समान है, जैसा कि एक बार एक पूर्वजन्म स्मरण करने वाले विद्वान ने मुझे बताया था।

Here, on the shore of the lake, the blooming flowers attract the innocent deer | Look at the pure world, forcibly scattered with new lotuses and flowers || 15 ||

English

The peacock, with its heart uplifted, prays to the lord of water | He fills the entire earth with it, the great soul || 16 ||

English

These peacocks follow the clouds like thirsty ones | The impure is considered the son of the impure || 17 ||

ये मोर बादलों का अनुसरण करते हैं जैसे प्यासे हुए | अशुद्ध को अशुद्ध का पुत्र माना जाता है || १७ ||

मृगानालोक्य पथिकश्चिन्तयन्दयितेक्षणे | पुरःस्थेषु पदार्थेषु यन्त्रपुत्रिकतां गतः || १८ ||

mṛgānālokya pathikaścintayandayitekṣaṇe | puraḥstheṣu padārtheṣu yantraputrikatāṃ gataḥ || 18 ||

English

Seeing the deer, the traveler thinks of his beloved's eyes | He becomes like a puppet in the presence of objects || 18 ||

हिन्दी

हिरण देखकर, यात्री अपनी प्रियतमा की आँखों के बारे में सोचता है | वह वस्तुओं के सामने एक पुतली की तरह हो जाता है || १८ ||

शिखी वार्यपि नादत्ते भूमेर्भुङ्क्ते बलादहिम् | दौरात्म्यं तन्न जाने किं सर्पस्य शिखिनोऽथवा || १९ ||

śikhī vāryapi nādatte bhūmerbhukte balādahim | daurātmyaṃ tanna jāne kiṃ sarpasya śikhino’thavā || 19 ||

English

The peacock does not take water, but forcibly eats the frost of the earth | I do not know whose wickedness it is, of the serpent or of the peacock || 19 ||

मोर पानी नहीं लेता, बल्कि बलपूर्वक पृथ्वी के हिम को खाता है | मुझे नहीं पता कि यह दुष्टता किसकी है, साँप की या मोर की || १९ ||

सज्जनाशयनीकाशं त्यक्त्वा बर्ही महत्सरः | पिबत्यम्ब्वभ्रनिष्ठ्यूतं मन्ये तन्नतिभीतितः || २० ||

sajjanāśayanīkāśaṃ tyaktvā barhī mahatsaraḥ | pibatyambvabhraniṣṭhyūtaṃ manye tannatibhītitaḥ || 20 ||

English

Giving up the comfortable nest, the great crane drinks the water falling from the clouds. I think he does this without much fear.

हिन्दी

सुखद घोंसले को छोड़कर, बड़ा सारस बादलों से गिरने वाला पानी पीता है। मैं सोचता हूँ कि वह इसे बहुत डर के बिना करता है।

लसत्कलापजलदाः पश्य नृत्यन्ति बर्हिणः | धुन्वानाः पिच्छकान्तीन्दुं प्रावृषः पोतका इव || २१ ||

lasatkalāpajaladāḥ paśya nṛtyanti barhiṇaḥ | dhunvānāḥ picchakāntīnduṃ prāvṛṣaḥ potakā iva || 21 ||

English

Look at the peacocks dancing with their shining feathers, shaking their tails like boats in the rainy season.

हिन्दी

देखो मोर अपनी चमकती पंखों के साथ नृत्य कर रहे हैं, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु में नावें अपनी पूँछों को हिला रही हैं।

वरवने वनवातविसारिणां चपलचन्द्रकचारुतरङ्गिणाम् | इह पयोनिधिरेव कलापिनां विसृतमुक्ततयेव विलासनः || २२ ||

varavane vanavātavisāriṇāṃ capalacandrakacārutaraṅgiṇām | iha payonidhireva kalāpināṃ visṛtamuktatayeva vilāsanaḥ || 22 ||

English

In the beautiful forest, the playful winds create charming waves in the streams. Here, the ocean itself seems to be the playground for the peacocks, spreading its waves.

हिन्दी

सुंदर वन में, चंचल वायुएँ नदियों में मनोहर तरंगें उत्पन्न करती हैं। यहाँ, समुद्र खुद मोरों का खेल का मैदान लगता है, जो अपनी लहरों को फैला रहा है।

चर तृणानि पिबाम्बु वनावनौ कलय विश्रमणं कदलीवने | चकितचातक पावकदूषिता न हि सुखाय भवत्यतिमानिता || २३ ||

cara tṛṇāni pibāmbu vanāvanau kalaya viśramaṇaṃ kadalīvane | cakitacātaka pāvakadūṣitā na hi sukhāya bhavatyatimānitā || 23 ||

English

Wander and eat grass, drink water in the forest. Take rest in the banana grove. O astonished chataka bird, do not be too proud of your purity, for it does not bring happiness.

हिन्दी

घूमो और घास खाओ, वन में पानी पियो। केले के बाग़ में विश्राम करो। है चकित चातक पक्षी, अपनी पवित्रता पर अति गर्व मत करो, क्योंकि यह सुख नहीं लाता।

नायं मयूर मकरालयवारिपूरपूर्णोदरो जलधरोऽम्बरमारुरुक्षुः | दावाग्निदग्धवनपादपकोटराग्र धूमावलीवलय उत्थित एष शैलात् || २४ ||

nāyaṃ mayūra makarālayavāripūrapūrṇodaro jaladharo'mbaramārurukṣuḥ | dāvāgnidagdhavanapādapakoṭarāgra dhūmāvalīvalaya utthita eṣa śailāt || 24 ||

English

This peacock, with its belly full of water from the clouds, is not eager to rise to the sky. This is the smoke from the forest fire, rising from the burnt tree tops on the mountain.

हिन्दी

यह मोर, जिसका पेट बादलों से भरा हुआ है, आकाश की ओर उठने के लिए उत्सुक नहीं है। यह वन अग्नि का धुआँ है, जो जले हुए पेड़ों के ऊपरी हिस्सों से पर्वत से उठ रहा है।

येनाब्देन शरद्विधावपि शिखी संतर्पितो वारिभिर्नो वर्षास्वपि पूरयेद्यदि सरस्तद्वाललोकोचितम् | आरब्धं समवेक्ष्य सज्जनजनो हासेन दुःस्थो भवेद्बर्हीत्यात्मतृषैव नेतुमखिलं कालं समभ्युद्यतः || २५ ||

yenābdena śaradvidhāvapi śikhī saṃtarpi to vāribhirno varṣāsvapi pūrayedyadi sarastadvālalokocitam | ārabdhaṃ samavekṣya sajjanajano hāsena duḥstho bhavedbarhītyātmatṛṣaiva netumakhilaṃ kālaṃ samabhyudyataḥ || 25 ||

English

Even if the peacock is satisfied with water in autumn, it cannot fill the lake in the rainy season, which is appropriate for the world of children. Seeing the beginning, a good person becomes miserable with laughter, ready to lead the whole time with the thirst of the peacock itself.

हिन्दी

यदि मोर शरद ऋतु में पानी से संतुष्ट हो जाए, तो भी वर्षा ऋतु में तालाब को भरने में असमर्थ है, जो बच्चों के संसार के लिए उपयुक्त है। शुरुआत देखकर, एक सज्जन व्यक्ति हँसी से दुःखी हो जाता है, मोर की प्यास के साथ पूरे समय को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए तैयार होता है।

स्फटिकविमलं पीत्वा तोयं घनोदरनिर्गतं पिबति न पुनर्मार्गे क्षुभ्यंस्तृषापि शिखी जलम् | स्फुरति च घनं स्मृत्वा स्मृत्वा न चापि विपद्यते गुणवति जने बद्धाशानां श्रमोऽपि सुखावहः || २६ ||

sphṭikavimalaṃ pītvā toyaṃ ghanodaranirgataṃ pibati na punarmārge kṣubhyaṃstṛṣāpi śikhī jalam | sphurati ca ghanaṃ smṛtvā smṛtvā na cāpi vipadyate guṇavati jane baddhāśānāṃ śramo'pi sukhāvahaḥ || 26 ||

English

Drinking crystal clear water flowing from the clouds, the peacock does not drink again on the path, even if thirsty. Remembering the clouds, it does not suffer, and for virtuous people with hopes, even labor brings happiness.

हिन्दी

स्फटिक जैसे निर्मल पानी पीकर, जो बादलों से निकलता है, मोर मार्ग पर फिर से नहीं पीता, भले ही प्यासा हो। बादलों को याद करके, वह दुःखी नहीं होता, और आशाओं से बंधे गुणवान लोगों के लिए, परिश्रम भी सुख लाता है।

इहातिवाहयन्त्येते मार्गदौस्थ्यं घनागमे | कथाभिः पथिकाः प्रायो विमूढा जीवितं यथा || २७ ||

ihātivāhayantyete mārgadausthyam ghanāgame | kathābhiḥ pathikāḥ prāyo vimūḍhā jīvitam yathā || 27 ||

English

Here, travelers often pass the difficulty of the path during the arrival of clouds with stories, as if confused in life.

यहाँ, यात्री अक्सर बादलों के आगमन के दौरान कहानियों के साथ मार्ग की कठिनाई को पार करते हैं, जैसे जीवन में भ्रमित हों।

पश्यात्र नाथ सरसः कमलोत्पलकुमुदबिसमृणालानाम् | कह्लारपत्रपयसा भारानादाय बालिकाश्चलिताः || २८ ||

paśyātra nātha sarasaḥ kamalotpalakumudabisamṛṇālānām | kahlārapatrapayasā bhārānādāya bālikāścalitāḥ || 28 ||

English

See here, O Lord, the lotuses, lilies, and water lilies of the lake, moving with the burden of water on their leaves.

हिन्दी

देखो, हे प्रभु, तालाब के कमल, कुमुदिनी और जलज, जो अपने पत्तों पर पानी के बोझ से हिल रहे हैं।

किमिदं नयथेति ततः पृष्टाभिस्ताभिरुक्तमेतस्य | व्यसनज्वरतप्तायाः पथिक वयं बालसख्य इति || २९ ||

kimidaṃ nayatheti tataḥ pṛṣṭābhistābhiruktametasya | vyasanajvarataptāyāḥ pathika vayaṃ bālasakhya iti || 29 ||

English

What is this that you are carrying? Asked by them, they said to him, 'O traveler, we are the childhood friends of the one afflicted by the fever of misfortune.'

हिन्दी

यह क्या है जो तुम ले जा रहे हो? उनसे पूछा गया, तो उन्होंने कहा, 'हे यात्री, हम उसके बचपन के दोस्त हैं जो दुर्भाग्य के ज्वर से पीड़ित है।'

अथ रागरक्तहृदयाः स्तनभरवितता विलासललिताङ्ग्यः | पथिकानां स्मरणपथं भूयोऽप्यनयन्प्रियाः स्वगेहस्थाः || ३० ||

atha rāgaraktahṛdayāḥ stanabharavitatā vilāsalalitāṅgyaḥ | pathikānāṃ smaraṇapathaṃ bhūyo'pyanayanpriyāḥ svagehasthāḥ || 30 ||

English

Then, the women with hearts full of passion, with breasts heavy and graceful bodies, again and again make the travelers remember the path of love, staying in their own homes.

Intoxicated by drinking the honey of lotuses stirred by the breeze carrying the fragrance of bees and flowers, the wind sings a melodious song, enchanted by the rustling of the leaves on the shore trees.
