श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । लोकहाराम्बरव्यालं चेदिचन्दनकाननम् । छिन्नं परशुधाराभिः पतितं दक्षिणार्णवे || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | lokahārāmbaravyālaṃ cedicandanakānanam | chinnam paraśudhārābhiḥ patitam dakṣiṇārṇave || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasistha said: The forest of Cedi-chandana, which is like a serpent in the sky that steals the world, has been cut down by the axe-wielding ones and fallen into the southern ocean.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: चेदि-चन्दन का वन, जो आकाश में एक सर्प के समान लोक को चुराने वाला है, कुल्हाड़ी धारण करने वालों द्वारा काट दिया गया है और दक्षिण सागर में गिर गया है।

पर्णवत्प्रोह्य पूरेण पारसीकाः परस्परम् । प्रहरन्तो विमोहेन विनष्टा वंजुलावने || २ ||

parṇavatprohya pūreṇa pārasīkāḥ parasparam | praharanto vimohana vinastā vaṃjulāvane || 2 ||

English

The Pārasīkas, filled with pride and arrogance, fought each other in confusion and were destroyed in the bamboo forest.

पारसीक, जो घमंड और अहंकार से भरे हुए थे, भ्रम में एक दूसरे से लड़ते हुए बांस के वन में विनष्ट हो गए।

दर्दुराद्रौ दुरन्तेषु दरदीर्णहृदन्तराः । दरीरन्ध्रेषु संलीना दरदा दानवा इव || ३ ||

dardurādrau duranteṣu dardīrṇahṛdantarāḥ | darīrandhreṣu saṃlīnā daradā dānavā iva || 3 ||

English

In the harsh and insurmountable mountains, the demons, with their hearts pierced by fear, hid in the caves like frogs.

हिन्दी

कठोर और अजेय पर्वतों में, डर से हृदय विदीर्ण होने के कारण दानव फिर से गुफाओं में छिपे हुए थे जैसे मेंढक।

चतुरायुधधाराग्रचूर्णनीहारधारिणः । विद्युद्वलयिनो वाता वेल्लितायुधवारिदाः || ४ ||

caturāyudhadhārāgracūrṇanīhāradhāriṇaḥ | vidyudvalayino vātā vellitāyudhavāridāḥ || 4 ||

English

The winds, bearing the dust of the tips of four weapons, were like lightning, and they caused the weapons to tremble like rain.

चार अस्त्रों के अग्र भाग की धूल लेकर चलने वाली वायुएं विद्युत के समान थीं, और उन्होंने अस्त्रों को वर्षा के समान कांपने का कारण बनाया।

दन्तिनोऽन्योन्यमाभग्नदन्तदेहौघपीडिताः । मृत्यूदरोम्भकग्रासपिण्डपिण्डा इवाभवन् || ५ ||

dantino'nyonyamābhagnadantadehaughapīḍitāḥ | mṛtyūdaroṃbhakagrāsapīṇḍapīṇḍā ivābhavan || 5 ||

English

The elephants, with their tusks and bodies broken and crushed by each other, became like lumps of flesh swallowed by the belly of death.

हाथी, जिनके दांत और शरीर एक दूसरे द्वारा तोड़े और कुचले गए थे, मृत्यु के उदर द्वारा निगले गए मांस के लोथड़ों के समान बन गए।

तज्जा रैवतिका रात्रौ रौद्रतोमरताडिताः | रूपिकाभिः पिशाचीभिर्भुक्ता भागीकृताङ्गकाः || ६ ||

tajjā raivatikā rātrau raudratomaratāḍitāḥ | rūpikābhiḥ piśācībhirbhaktā bhāgīkṛtāṅgakāḥ || 6 ||

English

In the night, the descendants of Raiwataka were struck by the terrible arrows of Rudra and were eaten by the demonic Rupikas, their bodies divided among them.

रात में, रैवतक के वंशज रुद्र के भयानक बाणों से घायल हुए और रूपिका नामक पिशाचों द्वारा खा लिए गए, उनके शरीर के टुकड़े कर दिए गए।

तालीतमालगहने दशार्णा जीर्णजङ्गले | गले पादं निधायान्तः कृत्ताः सिंहैर्गतासवः || ७ ||

tālītamālagahane daśārṇā jīrṇajaṅgale | gale pādaṃ nidhāyāntaḥ kṛttāḥ siṃhairgatāsavaḥ || 7 ||

English

In the dense forest of Tālītamāla, the people of Daśārṇa, exhausted in the old jungle, with their feet placed on their throats, were cut down by lions, losing their lives.

तालीतमाल के घने जंगल में, दशार्ण के लोग, जीर्ण जंगल में थके हुए, अपने पैर गले पर रखकर, सिंहों द्वारा काट दिए गए, जिससे उनकी जान चली गई।

पश्चिमार्णवतीरस्था नालिकेरधरावनौ | यवना विगतप्राणा निगीर्णा मकरोत्करैः || ८ ||

paścimārṇavatīrasthā nālikeradharāvanau | yavanā vigataprāṇā nigīrṇā makarotkaraiḥ || 8 ||

English

On the western shore of the ocean, the Yavanas, who hold coconut trees, are lifeless, swallowed by the crocodiles.

पश्चिमी समुद्र तट पर, नारियल के पेड़ धारण करने वाले यवन बेजान हैं, मगरमच्छों द्वारा निगल लिए गए हैं।

नाराचनिकरं नीलं निमेषं नासहञ्छकाः | रमठा नलिनीषण्डा इव ताण्डवितासवः || ९ ||

nārācanikaraṃ nīlaṃ nimeṣaṃ nāsahañchakāḥ | ramaṭhā nalinīṣaṇḍā iva tāṇḍavitāsavaḥ || 9 ||

English

The blue cluster of arrows, in an instant, could not be endured by the Ramaṭhās, as if they were lotus stalks dancing in the wind.

नीले बाणों का समूह, एक पल में, रमठाओं द्वारा सहन नहीं किया जा सका, जैसे कि वे हवा में नृत्य करते कमल के डंठल हों।

श्रवणाभोगशृङ्गाग्रो महेन्द्रोऽद्रिर्दिवि व्रजैः | विद्रुतैर्वलितो नीलैर्जालैर्जलमुचामिव || १० ||

śravaṇābhogaśṛṅgāgro mahendro'drirdivi vrajaiḥ | vidrutairvalito nīlairjālairjalamucāmiva || 10 ||

English

The peak of Mahendra mountain, adorned with the serpent Śravaṇābhoga, appears in the sky with scattered dark clouds, like the clouds dispersed by the wind.

सर्प श्रवणाभोग से सुशोभित महेन्द्र पर्वत का शिखर, आकाश में बिखरे हुए काले बादलों के साथ दिखाई देता है, जैसे हवा द्वारा बिखरे हुए बादल।

चामीकरवराकारा भग्ना तङ्गणवाहिनी | मृता हृताम्बरा चोरैर्भुक्तैकान्ते निशाचरैः || ११ ||

cāmīkaravarākārā bhagnā taṅgaṇavāhinī | mṛtā hṛtāmbarā corairbhuktaikānte niśācaraiḥ || 11 ||

English

The army with broken limbs, dead, with clothes stolen by thieves, eaten alone by night-roaming demons.

हिन्दी

टूटी हुई अंगों वाली सेना, मरी हुई, चोरों द्वारा कपड़े चुरा लिए गए, रात में घूमने वाले राक्षसों द्वारा अकेले खाया गया।

द्यौरिवर्क्षभरैरासीत्तदासारं भुवस्तलम् | विवर्तमानैरभितः कचद्भिर्ज्वलनायुधैः || १२ ||

dyaurivarkṣabharairāsīttadāsāraṃ bhuvastalam | vivartamānairabhitaḥ kacadbhirjvalanāyudhaiḥ || 12 ||

English

The sky seemed to be filled with the weight of the clouds, and the earth's surface was devoid of essence, surrounded by flickering flames.

आकाश बादलों के भार से भरा हुआ लग रहा था, और पृथ्वी की सतह सार से रहित थी, चारों ओर झिलमिलाती लपटों से घिरी हुई।

धाराधरधरारन्ध्रप्रतिश्रुद्धनघुंघुमा | जगद्गेहगुहासीद्द्यौर्घनं गातुमिवोद्यता || १३ ||

dhārādhara dharārandhrapratiśruddhanaghuṅghumā | jagadgehaguhāsīddyaurghanam gātumivodyatā || 13 ||

English

The world seemed like a cave, with the sound of raindrops echoing, as if the dense sky was about to sing.

दुनिया एक गुफा जैसी लग रही थी, बूंदों की आवाज गूंज रही थी, मानो घने आकाश गाने के लिए तैयार हो।

द्विपान्तरजनाश्चक्रैर्जर्जरा जीवितं जहुः | मीनजङ्गलजम्बाले जीर्णमत्स्या इवाजले || १४ ||

dvipāntarajanāścakrairjarjarā jīvitaṃ jahuḥ | mīnajaṅgalajambāle jīrṇamatsyā ivājale || 14 ||

English

The people of other islands, worn out by the wheels, gave up their lives, like worn-out fish in a fish-net pond.

दूसरे द्वीपों के लोग, पहियों से थके-हारे, अपनी जान छोड़ दी, मानो जाल के तालाब में थके-हारे मछली।

यावद्द्वीपा जिताः कुक्षौ सह्याद्रौ सममूर्तयः | आश्वस्य दिवसान्सप्त ययुरायासमन्थरम् || १५ ||

yāvaddvīpā jitāḥ kukṣau sahyādrau samamūrtayaḥ | āśvasya divasānsapta yayurāyāsamantharam || 15 ||

English

As long as the islands were conquered in the belly, equal to the Sahya mountains, after reassuring for seven days, they went without fatigue.

जब तक द्वीप पेट में विजयी हुए, सह्याद्रि पर्वतों के बराबर, सात दिनों तक आश्वासन देने के बाद, वे थकान के बिना चले गए।

गन्धमादनपुन्नागवनकुञ्जेषु पुञ्जिताः| विद्याधरकुमारीभिर्गान्धाराः परिरक्षिताः || १६ ||

gandhamādanapunnāgavanakuñjeṣu puñjitāḥ| vidyādharakumārībhirgāndhārāḥ parirakṣitāḥ || 16 ||

English

In the groves of the Gandhamadana forest, filled with Punnaga trees, the Gandharvas are protected by the daughters of the Vidyadharas.

गन्धमादन वन के पुन्नाग कुंजों में भरे हुए, विद्याधर कुमारियों द्वारा गान्धार सुरक्षित हैं।

हूणचीनकिरातानां मुक्तैस्तैश्चक्रवर्षणैः| कमलानीव लूनानि शिरांस्यभिमुखानिलैः || १७ ||

hūṇacīnakirātānāṃ muktais taiścakravarṣaṇaiḥ| kamalānīva lūnāni śirāṃsyabhimukhānilaiḥ || 17 ||

English

The heads of the Huns, Chinese, and Kiratas, struck by those released arrows, fell like lotuses cut by the wind.

हिन्दी

हूण, चीन और किरातों के सिर, उन छोड़े गए बाणों से घायल होकर, हवा से कटे कमलों की तरह गिरे।

निलीपा नलिनीनाले कण्टका इव निश्चलाः| द्रुमे द्रुमे द्रुममया भयात्त्वस्यावसंश्चिरम् || १८ ||

nilīpā nalinīnāle kaṇṭakā iva niścalāḥ| drume drume drumamayā bhayāttvasyāvasaṃściram || 18 ||

English

The Nilipa trees stand motionless like thorns in the lotus stalks, and in every tree, there is fear, and they remain there for a long time.

हिन्दी

निलीपा वृक्ष कमल के डंठलों में काँटों की तरह निश्चल खड़े हैं, और हर पेड़ में भय है, और वे वहाँ लम्बे समय तक रहते हैं।

चारुसारङ्गरङ्गासु शैलकाननभूमिषु| चतुर्दिक्कं तदापातैः संपन्नं क्षोभणं घनम् || १९ ||

cārusāraṅgarangāsu śailakānanabhūmiṣu| caturdikkaṃ tadāpātaiḥ saṃpannaṃ kṣobhaṇaṃ ghanam || 19 ||

English

In the beautiful forests and mountainous regions, in all directions, there was a dense and disturbing downpour.

सुन्दर वनों और पहाड़ी इलाकों में, सभी दिशाओं में, एक घना और विचलित करने वाला वर्षा हुआ।

कण्टकस्थलनामानः कण्टकस्थलकर्कशाः| कण्टकस्थलगा आसन्कण्टकस्थलमण्डले || २० ||

kaṇṭakasthalanāmānaḥ kaṇṭakasthalakarkaśāḥ| kaṇṭakasthalagā āsankaṇṭakasthalamaṇḍale || 20 ||

English

Those named after the thorny place, harsh due to the thorny place, residing in the thorny place, were in the circle of the thorny place.

जो काँटेदार स्थान के नाम से जाने जाते हैं, काँटेदार स्थान के कारण कठोर, काँटेदार स्थान में रहने वाले, वे काँटेदार स्थान के चक्र में थे।

पारसीकाः परं पूरैः पारं प्राप्य पयोनिधेः | निपेतुः पवनैः पूताः प्रलये तारका इव || २१ ||

pārasīkāḥ paraṃ pūraiḥ pāraṃ prāpya payonidheḥ | nipetuḥ pavanaiḥ pūtāḥ pralaye tārakā iva || 21 ||

English

The Persians, having reached the other shore of the ocean, fell down purified by the winds, like stars in dissolution.

पारसी लोग समुद्र के पार तक पहुंचकर, वायु से पवित्र होकर, प्रलय में तारों की तरह गिर पड़े।

ववुरम्भोधिकुट्टाका दृषदां कटकाङ्किताः | सर्वदिग्वनलुण्टाका वाताः प्रलयशङ्किताः || २२ ||

vavurambhodhikuṭṭākā dṛṣadāṃ kaṭakāṅkitāḥ | sarvadigvanaluṇṭākā vātāḥ pralayaśaṅkitāḥ || 22 ||

English

The winds, fearing dissolution, blew in all directions, striking the peaks of mountains and the clouds, as if they were the destroyers of the world.

प्रलय की आशंका से वायुएँ सभी दिशाओं में बहने लगीं, पर्वतों की चोटियों और बादलों को तोड़ती हुईं, मानो वे विश्व की समाप्ति करने वाली हों।

आसारसाराः पङ्काम्बुप्लुताः सघनघुंघुमाः | आसन्दशदिशोऽदृश्या बहुक्षुब्धायुधानिलैः || २३ ||

āsārasārāḥ paṅkāmbuplutāḥ saghanaghuṃghumāḥ | āsandiśado'dṛśyā bahukṣubdhāyudhānilaiḥ || 23 ||

English

The directions became invisible, filled with muddy water, dense fog, and many trembling weapons, carried by the winds.

दिशाएँ कीचड़ से भरी पानी, घने कोहरे और बहुत से काँपते हुए हथियारों से भरी हुई थीं, जिन्हें वायु लेकर आई थी।

निर्ह्रादकारिभिर्वातैर्वहच्छपछपारवम् | प्रसस्रुर्भुवि नीहारा महार्णवरया इव || २४ ||

nirhrādakāribhirvātairvahacchapachapāravam | prasasrurbhuvi nīhārā mahārṇavarayā iva || 24 ||

English

With the winds causing tremendous roars, the mist spread on the earth like a great ocean wave.

वायुओं के भयंकर गर्जन से, धुंध पृथ्वी पर महासागर की लहरों की तरह फैल गई।

विदूरस्था रथेभ्यश्च वीचिचीत्कारकारिणः | सरोम्भस्यनिलैः पेतुः पद्मेभ्य इव षट्पदाः || २६ ||

vidūrasthā rathebhyaśca vīcicītkārakāriṇaḥ | sarombhasyanilaiḥ petuḥ padmebhya iva ṣaṭpadāḥ || 26 ||

English

Far away from the chariots, making a loud noise, they fell like bees from lotuses, with the winds full of foam.

हिन्दी

रथों से दूर, जोर से चीत्कार करते हुए, वे फेन से भरी वायुओं के साथ कमलों से भौंरे की तरह गिरे।

हूणा आमस्तकं मग्ना उत्तरार्णवसैकते । क्लिन्नास्तत्रैव पङ्कान्तः पूरणाविलशूलवत् || २७ ||

hūṇā āmastakaṃ magna uttarārṇavasaikate | klinnāstatraiva paṅkāntaḥ pūraṇāvilashūlavat || 27 ||

English

The Hunas, with their heads submerged in the northern ocean, were drowned in the mud there, like a whirlpool filling with water.

हिन्दी

हूण लोगों के सिर उत्तर सागर में डूब गए थे, और वहीं कीचड़ में डूब गए थे, जैसे भरती हुई भंवर की तरह।

तीरैलावनलेखासु शकाः पूर्वपयोनिधेः । नीता बद्ध्वा दिनं मुक्ता न गता यमसादनम् || २८ ||

tīrailāvanalekhāsu śakāḥ pūrvapayonidheḥ | nītā baddhvā dinaṃ muktā na gatā yamasādanam || 28 ||

English

The Shakas, who were taken captive on the shores of the eastern ocean, were released after a day but did not reach the abode of Yama.

शक लोग, जो पूर्वी सागर के तट पर बंदी बनाए गए थे, एक दिन बाद छोड़ दिए गए लेकिन यम के घर नहीं पहुंचे।

मन्दं मन्द्रा महेन्द्राद्रौ क्रन्दन्तः पतिता दिवः । आश्वासिता मुनिवरैर्निजाश्रममृगा इव || २९ ||

mandaṃ mandrā mahendrādrau krandantaḥ patitā divaḥ | āśvāsitā munivarairnijāśramamṛgā iva || 29 ||

English

The Mandras, who were crying softly, fell from the sky onto the Mahendra mountain. They were consoled by the great sages as if they were deer in their own hermitage.

हिन्दी

मंद्र लोग, जो धीरे-धीरे रो रहे थे, महेन्द्र पर्वत पर आकाश से गिर पड़े। उन्हें महान ऋषियों ने उसी तरह सांत्वना दी जैसे वे अपने आश्रम में हिरण हों।

प्रविष्टा याचनं सह्ये लब्धाः सुरविलाद्द्वयम् । अनर्थेनाऽर्थ आयाति काकतालीयतः क्वचित् || ३० ||

praviṣṭā yācanaṃ sahye labdhāḥ suravilāddvayam | anarthenā'rtha āyāti kākatālīyataḥ kvacit || 30 ||

English

They entered the Sahya mountain range and obtained the divine fruit. Sometimes, good fortune comes from misfortune, like the crow's tale.

वे सह्याद्रि पर्वतमाला में प्रवेश कर गए और दिव्य फल प्राप्त किया। कभी-कभी, दुर्भाग्य से भाग्य आता है, जैसे कौए की कहानी।

पतिता दर्दुरारण्ये दशार्णा जीर्णपर्णवत् । भुक्त्वा विषफलान्यज्ञा मृतास्तत्रैव ते स्वयम् || ३१ ||

patitā dardurāraṇye daśārṇā jīrṇaparṇavat | bhuktvā viṣaphalānyajñā mṛtāstatraiva te svayam || 31 ||

English

They fell in the forest of frogs, like withered leaves. Unknowingly, they ate poisonous fruits and died there.

हिन्दी

वे मेंढकों के जंगल में गिर पड़े, जैसे सूखे पत्ते। अनजाने में उन्होंने विषैले फल खा लिए और वहीं मर गए।

विशल्यकरणीं भुक्त्वा काकतालीययोगतःहिमाद्रौ हैहया याता गृहं विद्याधरा इव || ३२ ||

viśalyakaraṇīṃ bhuktvā kākatālīyayogataḥhimādrau haihayā yātā gṛhaṃ vidyādharā iva || 32 ||

English

Having eaten the thorn-removing herb, by the power of the crow-palm, they went to the Himalayas like the Vidyadharas going home.

विशल्यकरणीं भुक्त्वा काकतालीययोगतःहिमाद्रौ हैहया याता गृहं विद्याधरा इव।

पृष्ठनृम्लानकुसुमा धनुर्भिर्गृहमागताःवङ्गा नाद्यापि दृश्यन्ते पिशाचत्वमिवागताः || ३३ ||

pṛṣṭhanṛmlānakusumā dhanurbhirgṛhamāgatāḥvaṅgā nādyāpi dṛśyante piśācatvamivāgatāḥ || 33 ||

English

With withered flowers on their backs, they came home with bows, but the Vangas are still not seen, as if they have become ghosts.

पृष्ठनृम्लानकुसुमा धनुर्भिर्गृहमागताःवङ्गा नाद्यापि दृश्यन्ते पिशाचत्वमिवागताः।

अङ्गा वनफलैर्भुक्तैर्विद्याधरपदप्रदैःविद्याधरीभिः क्रीडन्ति दिवि विद्याधराः स्थिताः || ३४ ||

aṅgā vanaphalairbhuktairvidyādharapadapradaiḥvidyādharībhiḥ krīḍanti divi vidyādharāḥ sthitāḥ || 34 ||

English

The Angas, having eaten the forest fruits given by the Vidyadharas, play with the Vidyadharas in the sky.

अङ्गा वनफलैर्भुक्तैर्विद्याधरपदप्रदैःविद्याधरीभिः क्रीडन्ति दिवि विद्याधराः स्थिताः।

तालीतमालकण्डेषु पतिताः पातिताङ्गकाःपारसीका गता मोहं भ्रमाद्वैमानिका इव || ३५ ||

tālītamālakhaṇḍeṣu patitāḥ pātitāṅgakāḥpārasīkā gatā mohaṃ bhramādvaimānikā iva || 35 ||

English

Fallen in the pieces of talitamala, the Parasikas, with their limbs fallen, have gone mad, wandering like those who have lost their way.

तालीतमालकण्डेषु पतिताः पातिताङ्गकाःपारसीका गता मोहं भ्रमाद्वैमानिका इव।

तरलासारमातङ्गं पतितं तङ्गणाङ्गणेअङ्गैरङ्ग कलिङ्गानां चतुरङ्गं वलं हतम् || ३६ ||

taralāsāramātaṅgaṃ patitaṃ taṅgaṇāṅgaṇeaṅgairaṃga kaliṅgānāṃ caturaṅgaṃ valaṃ hatam || 36 ||

English

The mighty elephant, Taralasara, fell in the courtyard, struck by the limbs of the Kalinga warriors, and the four-limbed army was destroyed.

हिन्दी

तरलासार नामक महान हाथी अङ्गण में गिर गया, कलिंग योद्धाओं के अंगों से मारा गया, और चार-अंग सेना नष्ट हो गई।

क्रमत्यरिबले साल्वाः शरशैलोदकोदरे | पतिताः प्रभुणा सार्धमद्याप्येवोपलाः स्थिताः || ३७ ||

kramatyaribale sālvāḥ śaraśailodakodare | patitāḥ prabhuṇā sārdhamadyāpyevopalāḥ sthitāḥ || 37 ||

English

The enemies, in the order of their strength, fell into the ocean of arrows like stones, and even today they remain there with their lord.

शत्रुओं ने अपनी शक्ति के क्रम में बाणों के समुद्र में पत्थरों की तरह गिर गए, और आज भी वे अपने स्वामी के साथ वहाँ हैं।

असंख्याः प्रपलायन्तः ककुभं ककुभं प्रति | नराः सरत्तरङ्गेषु सागरेषु लयं गताः || ३८ ||

asaṃkhyāḥ prapalāyantaḥ kakubhaṃ kakubhaṃ prati | narāḥ sarattarangeṣu sāgareṣu layaṃ gatāḥ || 38 ||

English

Countless people, fleeing in all directions, met their end in the oceans filled with waves of blood.

असंख्य लोग, सभी दिशाओं में भागते हुए, रक्त की लहरों से भरे समुद्रों में अपना अंत पा गए।
