śrīrāma uvāca | yuktiḥ syātkīdṛśī brahmannsaṃsāre duḥkhaśāntaye | teṣāṃ yeṣāmayam pakṣaḥ śrūyatāmucyatāṃ tataḥ || 1 ||

English

Shri Rama said: What kind of logic, O Brahman, would there be to end the sorrows of the world? Let us hear and speak about the views of those who hold this position.

yāvajjīvaṃ sukhaṃ jīvennāsti mṛtyuragocaraḥ | bhasmībhūtasya śāntasya punarāgamanaṃ kutaḥ || 2 ||

English

As long as one lives, let one live happily; there is no death in sight. When one becomes ashes and is at peace, how can there be a return?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yaṃ yaṃ niścayamādatte saṃvidantarakhaṇḍitam | tattathaivānubhavati pratyakṣamiti sarvagam || 3 ||

English

Vasistha said: Whatever firm conviction one holds, unbroken by any other knowledge, one experiences that as real and pervasive.

yathā khaṃ sarvagaṃ śāntaṃ tathā cidvyoma sarvagam | tadevaikyamatha dvaitamanyārthasyātyasaṃbhavāt || 4 ||

English

Just as the sky is all-pervading and tranquil, so is the consciousness all-pervading. That alone is the unity and duality, as there is no possibility of any other meaning.

sargādau tadṛte'nyo'rtho mahāpralayarūpiṇi | akāṇaratvānnāstyeva brahmaivedamatastatam || 5 ||

English

At the beginning of creation, apart from that, there is no other meaning in the form of the great dissolution. Due to the absence of any other, this is indeed Brahman.

samastavedaśāstrārthaṃ ye mahāpralayādi ca | necchanti te mahāmūḍhā niḥśāstrā no mṛtā iva || 6 ||

English

Those who do not desire the essence of all Vedas and scriptures, including the great dissolution, are great fools, devoid of scriptures, as if dead.

sarvaśāstrāviruddhena sarvaṃ brahmedamityalam | sthitaṃ sānubhavaṃ yoktṛ yeṣāṃ tairna kathākramaḥ || 7 ||

English

Everything is established in the experience of those who are united with the non-contradictory scriptures, saying 'All this is Brahman.' There is no sequence of speech for them.

nityā nirantarodeti yādṛśī saṃvidāśaye | bhūyate tanmayenaiva puṃsā deho'stu māthavā || 8 ||

English

The eternal, continuously arising consciousness in the heart becomes that itself, whether the body exists or not.

bodhāccetsaṃvido jātaḥ sa duḥkhī puruṣo bhavet | viruddhaṃ vedanaṃ yāvattāvajjīvo'ṅga tanmayaḥ || 9 ||

English

If consciousness arises from knowledge, that person becomes miserable. As long as there is contradictory experience, the living being is identified with that.

jagaccidvyomakacanamātrameveti bhāvite | tatkathaṃ vedanaṃ vyomnā bodhaḥ kasya kuto bhavet || 10 ||

English

If the entire universe is considered to be merely the sky of consciousness, how can there be experience? How can there be knowledge of anyone from anywhere?

na kānicitpradhāvanti ekaniṣcayasaḿvidām | pumṣāḿ sukhāni duḥkhāni rajāḿsi nabhasāmiva || 11 ||

English

Neither happiness nor sorrow, nor the passions of men, move in the least those who are steadfast in the knowledge of the Self, just as the clouds do not move the sky.

saḿvitsatyāstvasatyā vā niṣcayastāvadīdṛṣaḥ | ābālame tatsaḿsidhḍaḿ kenāpahnūyate katham || 12 ||

English

Whether the knowledge of the Self is real or unreal, such is the certainty. How can anyone deny this, which is well-established from childhood?

na dehaḥ puruṣo vāpi jīvo'nya upalabhyate | saḿvitsarvamidaṃ sā tu yathā vetti tathā jagat || 13 ||

English

Neither the body nor the individual self is perceived as different from the Self. The Self is all this, and as it knows, so is the world.

sā satyāpyathavāsatyā tayā deho'nubhūyate | svātantryeṇa yathā svapne pātāle khe jale divi || 14 ||

English

Whether the Self is real or unreal, the body is experienced through it. Just as in a dream, one experiences various realms like the underworld, sky, water, and heaven independently.

saḿvitsatyāstvasatyā vā tāvanmātraḥ smṛtaḥ pumān | sa yathāniṣcayo nūnaṃ tatsatyamiti niṣcayaḥ || 15 ||

English

Whether the knowledge of the Self is real or unreal, a person is remembered only to that extent. Indeed, the certainty is that whatever is firmly resolved is the truth.

prāmāṇyaṃ sarvaśāstrāṇāmetenaiva prasiddhyati | sarvasiddhāntasiddhānta eṣa eveti me matiḥ || 16 ||

English

The validity of all scriptures is established by this alone | This is indeed the ultimate conclusion of all doctrines, this is my belief

tasmādabodhatā yāste yathā saṃvittathaiva sā | bhavatyakaluṣākārā tathaiva phalabhāginī || 17 ||

English

Therefore, the ignorance that exists in you is exactly as consciousness | It becomes pure in form and thus becomes the receiver of the fruits

English

The ignorance in consciousness, caused by place, time, action, substance, Vedas, scriptures, desires, and illusions, never perishes

āvirbhavati sā bhūyaḥ kṣīṇāśaṅkā kṣaṇena cet | tatkena saṃvido duḥkhaṃ kadā nāmopaśāmyati || 19 ||

English

If that ignorance manifests again, even if doubts are dispelled in an instant, then when will the suffering of consciousness be pacified

saṃvideva nṛṇāṃ jīvaḥ sa yathā dṛḍhabhāvanaḥ | tathā sukhī vā duḥkhī vā bhavedityeṣa niścayaḥ || 20 ||

English

Consciousness alone is the life of beings | As it is firmly established, so it becomes happy or unhappy, this is the conclusion

saṃvicchedasti tajjñānāṃ śaraṇaṃ bhavabhedane | nāsti cettačchilāmūkamāndhyamevāvaśiṣyate || 21 ||

English

If there is knowledge, it is the refuge in the dissolution of existence | If there is no knowledge, then only blindness remains || 21 ||

English

Sri Rama said | There is no end to this in any direction, nor is there destruction of the world | He who thinks 'it exists' has abandoned the thought of non-existence || 23 ||

vijñānaghanamevedamiti nūnamapaśyatā | paśyatā ca yathādṛṣṭaṃ sarvakṣayamapaśyatā || 24 ||

English

This is indeed a mass of consciousness, thus it is certainly seen | Seeing as it is seen, the destruction of all is seen || 24 ||

tasya syātkīdṛśī brahmatyuktirādhivināśane | iti me saṃśayaṃ chindhi bhūyo bodhābhivṛddhaye || 25 ||

English

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atraikaṃ tāvaducitaṃ pūrvameva tathottaram | dvitīyamuttaraṃ nyāyyaṃ vakṣyamāṇamidaṃ śṛṇu || 26 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Here, one thing is appropriate first, then the other. The second answer is logical. Listen to what is being said.

English

That is united with the destruction of the form, there is no doubt about it. But if the body is not destroyed, what is the sequence of suffering here?

Or if one is certain that there is no consciousness, then from such a belief, one indeed becomes insentient.

32

sthiramastvasthiraṃ vāpi mahyādimahatāmapicidbhāmātramidaṃ bhāti yāvadajñānamātatam || 36 ||

Just as smoke in the sky and waves in the ocean, the various whirls of transmigration are in the sky of consciousness.

English

Just as the causes and means do not exist in a dream, so too the elements like earth do not exist at the beginning of the world's existence.
