śikhidhvaja uvāca | maṇisādhakavindhyebhabandhanādyamarātmaja | sūcitaṃ yatkathājālaṃ punarmeprakaṭīkuru || 1 ||

English

Shikhidhvaja said: O son of the immortals, bound by the Vindhya mountains, you have indicated the story. Please reveal it to me again.

cūḍālovāca | vākyārthadṛṣṭerniṣpattayā hṛdgṛhe cittabhittiṣu | śṛṇu svayaṃ kathāṃ citrāṃ citramunmīlayāmi te || 2 ||

English

Chudala said: By the realization of the meaning of words, in the heart and mind, listen to the wonderful story. I will reveal it to you.

yo'sau śāstrārthakuśalastattvajñāne tvapaṇḍitaḥ | ratnasanṣādhakaḥ proktaḥ sa tvameva mahīpate || 3 ||

English

He who is skilled in the meaning of the scriptures but ignorant in the knowledge of reality is called a gem-seeker. O king, you are that person.

tajjñobhavasi śāstreṣuravirmērutṭeṣviva | tattvajñāne tu viśrānto na tvaṃ dṛṣadivāmbhasi || 4 ||

English

You are knowledgeable in the scriptures, like the sun on the peaks of Meru. But in the knowledge of reality, you are not steady, like the reflection of the moon in water.

viddhi cittāmaṇiṃ sādho sarvatyāgamakṛtrimam | tamantaṃ sarvaduḥkhānāṃ tvaṃ sādhayasi śuddhadhīḥ || 5 ||

English

Know the wish-fulfilling gem, O virtuous one, which is not artificial and involves the renunciation of all. You, with a pure mind, achieve the end of all sufferings.

sarvatyāgena śuddhena sarvamāsādyate'nagha sarvatyāgo hi sāmrājyaṃ kiṃ cintāmaṇito bhavet || 6 ||

English

By complete renunciation, one attains purity and everything else, O sinless one. Complete renunciation indeed is the highest sovereignty; what need is there for the wish-fulfilling gem?

siddhaḥ sarvaparityāgaḥ sādho saṃsādhyatastava kharvīkṛtajagadbhūtirvidyāsvātmodayastathā || 7 ||

English

Complete renunciation is accomplished, O virtuous one, and it is being perfected by you. The world's prosperity is diminished, and knowledge arises from the self.

saṃtyaktaṃ bhavatā rājyaṃ sadāradhanabāndhavam brahmaṇeva jagatsargavyāpāraḥ svaniśāgame || 8 ||

English

You have renounced the kingdom along with wealth and relatives, just as Brahma engages in the creation of the world during the night.

svadeśasyātidūrasthamāgato'si mamāśramam bhuvo'ntamiva viśrāntyai vainateyaḥ sakacchapaḥ || 9 ||

English

You have come to my hermitage, which is very far from your own country, like Garuda with a tortoise, for rest at the end of the earth.

kevalaṃ sarvasaṃtyāge śeṣitāhaṃmatistvayā mṛṣṭākhilakalaṅkena svasattevānilena khe || 10 ||

English

Only in complete renunciation does the sense of 'I' remain, purified of all blemishes, like the wind in the sky.

manomātre hṛdastyakte jagadāyāti pūrṇatām | tyāgātyāgavikalpais tvaṃ khamambhodair ivāvṛtaḥ || 11 ||

English

When the mind is completely renounced, the world attains fullness. You are enveloped by the clouds of renunciation and non-renunciation.

English

This is not the supreme bliss, nor is the renunciation of everything a great achievement. There is another, even higher, which is difficult to attain and is truly great.

cintayeti gate vṛddhiṃ saṅkalpagrahaṇe śanaiḥ | vātyayeva vanaspande tyāgaḥ proḍḍīya te gataḥ || 13 ||

English

Thinking thus, gradually increasing in resolution, like the wind in the trembling of the forest, renunciation has gone far from you.

tyāgitā syātkutastasya cintāmapyāvṛṇoti yaḥ | pavanaspanadayuktasya niḥspandatvaṃ kutastaroḥ || 14 ||

English

How can there be renunciation for one who is covered by thoughts? How can there be stillness for one who is agitated by the wind of thoughts?

cintaiva cittamityāhuḥ saṅkalpetaranāmakam | tasyāmeva sphurantyāṃ tu cittaṃ tyaktaṃ kathaṃ bhavet || 15 ||

English

They say that thought itself is the mind, known by another name. How can the mind be renounced when it is active?

saṃkalpagrahṇenāntastyāgaḥ proḍḍīya te gataḥ | śabdasaṃśravaṇenāṅga yathā grāmavihangamaḥ || 17 ||

English

By resolving to renounce everything, you have abandoned all attachments, O Uddhava, just as a village bird abandons its nest upon hearing a sound.

English

By embracing supreme detachment, you have attained a state of carefreeness. One who is honored and respected does not cause suffering to any being.

sarvatyāgamṇāvevaṃ gate kamalalocana | tapaḥkācamaṇirdṛṣṭastvayā saṃkalpacakṣuṣā || 19 ||

English

O lotus-eyed one, having thus attained the state of complete renunciation, you have seen the gem of austerity with the eye of resolve.

tvayā tasmins tapasyeva duḥkhe dṛṣṭibhramodite | grāhyaikabhāvanā baddhā jalendau śaśino yathā || 20 ||

English

By you, in that austerity, suffering is seen as an illusion. Just as the moon's reflection is bound in the water, so is the single-minded devotion to be grasped.

avāsanamanāsaktyā kṛtānantā savāsanā | ādyantamadhyaviṣamā duḥkhāyaiva tapakriyā || 21 ||

English

Desires, when not attached, become endless. The practice of austerity, which is uneven at the beginning, middle, and end, leads only to suffering.

amitānandamutsṛjya susādhyam yaḥ pravartate | mite vastuni duḥsādhye svātmāhā sa śaṭhaḥ smṛtaḥ || 22 ||

English

He who abandons unlimited bliss and pursues easily attainable things, is considered a fool who destroys his own self in pursuing limited and difficult to attain objects.

sarvatyāgam samārabhya na caiṣa sādhitastvayā | tathā duḥkhaikatājñānabaddhena vanasadmani || 23 ||

English

Having undertaken complete renunciation, this has not been accomplished by you. Thus, bound by the knowledge of sole suffering, you are in the forest abode.

rājyabandhādviniṣkramya prasaraduḥkhapūritāt | vanavāsābhidhaiḥ sādho baddho'si dṛṣṭabandhanaiḥ || 24 ||

English

Having left the bondage of the kingdom, which is full of spreading sorrow, O virtuous one, you are bound by visible bonds in the forest life.

dviguṇā eva te cintāḥ śītavātātapādayaḥ | bandhanādadhikaṃ manye vanavāsamajānatām || 25 ||

English

Your worries have doubled, such as cold, wind, and heat. I consider the forest life to be more of a bondage for the ignorant.

cintāmaṇirmayā prāpta ityalam buddhvānasi | na labdhavānbhavānsādho sphaṭikasyāpi khaṇḍikām || 26 ||

English

You have attained the wish-fulfilling gem, thinking 'enough, I am wise.' O virtuous one, you have not even obtained a piece of crystal.

ityetadaṅga maṇiyatnakathāsamānaṃ samyaṅmayā prakathitaṃ tava padmanetra | tadbodhyamevamamalaṃ svayameva buddhvā yadvetsi tatpariṇatiṃ naya cittakośe || 27 ||

English

Thus, this story of the jewel is similar to the limbs, accurately narrated by me, O lotus-eyed one. Understand it as pure, and having realized it yourself, take what you know to the treasure of your heart.
