1

śrīrāma uvāca | ākārajātamuditaṃ śuddhaṃ hariharādyapi | avidyai veti ahaṃ śrutvā brahman bhramam ivāgataḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Having heard that even the pure forms of Hari and Hara are ignorance, O Brahman, I am confused.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | saṃvedyenāparāmṛṣṭaṃ śāntaṃ sarvātmakaṃ ca yat | tatsaccidābhāsamayamastīha kalanojjhitam || 2 ||

English

Vasistha said: That which is not touched by the perceived, which is tranquil and all-pervading, that is the essence of pure consciousness, devoid of any movement.

samudeti svatastasmātkalā kalanarūpiṇī | jalādāvartalekheva sphurajjalatayoditā || 3 ||

English

From that, spontaneously arises the power of movement, taking the form of vibration, like the swirling motion in water.

sūkṣmā madhyā tathā sthūlā ceti sā kalpyate tridhā | paścānmanastayā tena jñātaiva vapuṣā punaḥ || 4 ||

English

That power of movement is conceived in three forms: subtle, medium, and gross. Afterwards, it is known through the mind, by that very form.

tiṣṭhatyetāsvavasthāsu bhedataḥ kalpyate tridhā | sattvaṃ rajastama iti eṣaiva prakṛtiḥ smṛtā || 5 ||

English

It exists in these states and is conceived in three distinct forms: sattva, rajas, and tamas. This is known as prakriti.

avidyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi guṇatritayadharmiṇīm | eṣaiva saṃsṛtirjantorasyāḥ pāraṃ paraṃ padam || 6 ||

English

Know that ignorance is the nature, which has the three qualities | This itself is the cycle of birth and death for the living being, and its ultimate goal is the supreme state

atra te ye trayāḥ proktā guṇāste'pi tridhā smṛtāḥ | sattvaṃ rajastama iti pratyekaṃ bhidyate guṇaḥ || 7 ||

English

Here, the three qualities that have been mentioned are also remembered in three ways | Each quality is divided as sattva, rajas, and tamas

navadhaivam vibhakteyamavidyā guṇabhedataḥ | yāvatkiñcididaṃ dṛśyamanayāiva tadāśritam || 8 ||

English

Thus, ignorance is divided into nine parts due to the difference in qualities | Whatever is seen in this world is supported by this ignorance

ṛṣayo munayaḥ siddhā nāgā vidyādharāḥ surāḥ | iti bhāgamavidyāyāḥ sāttvikaṃ viddhi rāghava || 9 ||

English

Sages, saints, accomplished beings, serpents, celestial beings, and gods | Know this to be the sattvic part of ignorance, O Raghava

sāttvikasyāsya bhāgasya nāgavidyādharāstamaḥ | rajastu munayaḥ siddhāḥ sattvaṃ devā harādayaḥ || 10 ||

English

Of this sattvic part, serpents and celestial beings are tamas | Saints and accomplished beings are rajas | Gods and others are sattva

sattvajātau devayonāvavidyā prākṛtairguṇaiḥ | nirmalaṃ padamāyātāḥ sattvaṃ hariharādayaḥ || 11 ||

English

In the realm of pure existence, the divine beings, free from ignorance and endowed with the pure qualities of nature, attain the immaculate state. The essence of pure existence is embodied by beings like Hari and Hara.

bhāga eṣa tvavidyāyā evaṃ vidyātvamāgataḥ | bījaṃ phalatvamāyāti phalamāyāti bījatām || 12 ||

English

This part of ignorance, having attained the state of knowledge, transforms into the seed of fruition. The fruit, in turn, transforms into the seed.

tena rudrādayo hyete sattvabhāgā mahāmate | tiṣṭhanti muktāḥ puruṣā yāvaddēhaṃ jagatsthitau || 13 ||

English

Therefore, these beings like Rudra and others, who are endowed with the essence of pure existence, remain liberated as long as they dwell in the world.

yāvaddēhaṃ mahātmāno jīvanmuktā vyavasthitāḥ | videhamuktā dēhāntē sthāsyanti paramēśvarē || 14 ||

English

As long as they are in the body, these great souls remain liberated while living. Upon the end of the body, they will abide in the Supreme Lord.

udetyavidyā vidyāyāḥ salilādiva budbudaḥ | vidyāyāṃ līyatē'vidyā payasīva hi budbudaḥ || 16 ||

English

Ignorance arises from knowledge like a bubble from water. Ignorance dissolves into knowledge like a bubble into water.

payastaraṅgayordvitvabhāvanādeva bhinnatā | vidyāvidyādṛśorbhedabhāvanādeva bhinnatā || 17 ||

English

The distinction between milk and waves arises from the perception of duality | The distinction between knowledge and ignorance arises from the perception of difference || 17 ||

payastaraṅgayoraikyaṃ yathaiva paramārthatḥ | nāvidyātvaṃ na vidyātvaṃiha kiṃcana vidyate || 18 ||

English

The oneness of milk and waves is truly ultimate | There is neither ignorance nor knowledge here || 18 ||

vidyāvidyādṛśau tyaktvā yadastīha tadasti hi | pratiyogivyavacchedavśādetadrghūdvaha || 19 ||

English

Abandoning the views of knowledge and ignorance, what exists here is truly that | Due to the exclusion of the counterpart, this is light || 19 ||

vidyāvidyādṛśau na staḥ śeṣe baddhapado bhava | nāvidyāsti na vidyāsti kṛtaṃ kalpanayānayā || 20 ||

English

The views of knowledge and ignorance do not exist, remain bound in the remnant | There is no ignorance, no knowledge, this is done by imagination || 20 ||

kiṃcidasti nakiṃcidyaccitsaṃviditi tatsthitam | tadevāviditābhāsaṃ sadavidyetyudāhṛtam || 21 ||

English

Something exists, nothing exists, that is pure consciousness | That itself is the appearance of ignorance, known as ignorance || 21 ||

viditaṃ sattadevedamavidyākṣayasaṃjñitam | vidyābhāvādavidyākhyāmithyaivodeti kalpanā || 22 ||

English

That which is known to exist is called the destruction of ignorance. Due to the absence of knowledge, the false imagination called ignorance arises.

mithaḥ svānte tayorantaśchāyātapanayoriva | avidyāyāṃ vilīnāyāṃ kṣīṇe dve eva kalpane || 23 ||

English

Just as the shadow and the sunlight are mutually exclusive, so too, when ignorance is dissolved, both imaginations are destroyed.

ete rāghava līyete avāpyaṃ pariśiṣyate | avidyāsaṃkṣayātkṣīṇo vidyāpakṣo’pi rāghava || 24 ||

English

O Raghava, these are absorbed, and what remains is to be attained. Even the aspect of knowledge is destroyed due to the destruction of ignorance, O Raghava.

yacchiṣṭaṃ tanna kiṃcidvā kiṃcidvāpīdamātatam | tatraivaṃ dṛśyate sarvaṃ na kiṃcana ca dṛśyate || 25 ||

English

What remains is either nothing or something that has been extended. There, everything is seen, and nothing is seen.

vaṭaśca vaṭadhānāyāmiva puṣpaphalādimān | sarvaśaktirhi kiṃcittvaṃ sarvaśaktisamudgakam || 26 ||

English

Just as the banyan tree is present in the seed, so too, you are the possessor of all powers, the source of all powers.

nabhaso'pyadhikaṃ śūnyaṃ naca śūnyaṃ cidātmakam | sūryakānte yathā vahniryathā kṣīre ghṛtaṃ tathā || 27 ||

English

Even the sky is more empty, but that emptiness is not consciousness. Just as fire is in the sunstone and ghee is in milk, so it is.

tatredaṃ saṃsthitaṃ sarvaṃ deśakālakramodaye | yathā sphuliṅgā analādyathā bhāso divākarāt || 28 ||

English

All this is established there in the sequence of space, time, and order. Just as sparks from fire and light from the sun.

tasmāttathema niryānti sphurantyāḥ saṃvidaścitaḥ | yathāmbhodhistaraṅgāṇāṃ yathāmalamaṇistviṣām || 29 ||

English

Therefore, these manifest from the shining consciousness. Just as waves from the ocean and jewels from the pure gemstone.

kośo nityamanantānāṃ tathā tatsaṃvidāṃ tviṣām | sabāhyābhyantare sarvaṃ vastunyastyeva vastusat || 30 ||

English

The sheath is eternal and infinite, and so is that shining consciousness. Everything, both external and internal, is established in the reality of things.

sarvadaivāvināśātma kumbhānāṃ gaganaṃ yathā | yathā maṇerayaḥspande ayaskāntasya kartṛtā || 31 ||

English

Always indestructible, like the sky of pots, just as the vibration of iron is the doer of the magnet.

akartureva hi tathā kartṛtā tasya kathyatemaṇisaṃnidhimātreṇa yathāyaḥ spandate jaḍamatatsattayā tathaivāyaṃ dehaścetatyacidvapuḥ || 32 ||

English

Even though the Self is not the doer, its influence is described as such merely due to its proximity, just as iron filings move due to the presence of the magnet. Similarly, this body, which is insentient, appears to be conscious due to the presence of the Self.

tatra sthitaṃ jagadidaṃ jagadekabīje cinnāmni saṃviditakalpitakalpena | lolormijālamiva vāriṇi citrarūpaṃ khādapyarūpavati yatra na kiṃcidasti || 33 ||

English

There, this world is situated in the single seed of the world, in the name of consciousness, imagined by the imagined concept | Like the playful waves in the water, appearing in various forms, in the sky where there is nothing.
