Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Therefore, know that this world, both moving and unmoving, has not become anything. Whatever it is, know it as such.

yatra kācinna kalanā bhāvābhāvamayātmikātadidaṃ rāma jīvādi sarvaṃ vyarthaṃ kimīhase || 2 ||

English

Where there is no concept of existence or non-existence, O Rama, all this, including the individual soul, is useless. Why do you worry?

saṃbandho'yamasāvantarhradi yo vyapadiśyatena taṃ labhāmahe sarpaṃ rajjusarpabhramādiva || 3 ||

English

This relationship is not within the heart that is indicated. We perceive it like a snake in a rope, which is an illusion.

aparijñāta ātmaiva bhramatāṃ samupāgataḥjñāta ātmatvamāyāti sīmāntaḥ sarvasaṃvidām || 4 ||

English

The unrealized self wanders in delusion. The realized self attains the boundary of all consciousness.

avidyetyucyate loke ciccetyamalamāśritācetyātītātmatāmeti sarvopādhivivarjitā || 5 ||

English

In the world, it is called ignorance. It is said to be pure consciousness, free from all impurities. It is beyond the self, devoid of all attributes.

cittamātraṃ hi puruṣastasminnaṣṭe ca naśyatisthite tiṣṭhati cātmāyaṃ ghaṭe sati ghaṭāmbaram || 6 ||

English

The self is merely the mind; when the mind is destroyed, the self is destroyed; when the mind is stable, the self is stable. Just as the cloth is in the pot, so is the self.

gacchanpaśyati gacchantaṃ sthitaṃ tiṣṭhañchiśuryathābhrāntamevamidaṃ cetaḥ paśyatyātmānamākulam || 7 ||

English

The moving one sees the moving, the stable one sees the stable. Just as the sun sees the confused, so does this mind see the disturbed self.

kośakāravadātmānaṃ vāsanātanutantubhiḥveṣṭayaccaiva ceto'ntarbālatvānnāvabudhyate || 8 ||

English

Like a silkworm, the self is enveloped by the threads of desires and does not realize its true nature due to its immaturity.

śrīrāma uvācamaurkhyamatyantaghanatāmāgataṃ samavasthitamsthāvarādi tanu prāptaṃ kīdṛśaṃ bhavati prabho || 9 ||

English

Sri Rama said: What is the nature of the one who has attained the highest state of foolishness and is established in the state of inert objects?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaamanastvamasaṃprāptaṃ manastvādapi ca cyutamtaṭasthaṃ rūpamāśritya sthitaiṣā sthāvareṣu cit || 10 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: You are not the mind, nor are you beyond the mind. Taking the form of the witness, the mind is established in inert objects.

tatra dūrasthitā muktirmanye vedyavidāṃ vara | suptapuryaṣṭakā yatra cittasthitā duḥkhadāyinī | mūkāndhajaḍavattatra sattāmātreṇa tiṣṭhati || 11 ||

English

There, liberation is considered distant by the best among the knowers of the knowable. Where the consciousness is situated in the dormant city of eight, it causes suffering. There, it exists merely as existence, like the dumb, blind, and inert.

śrīrāma uvāca | sattādvaitatayā yatra saṃsthitā sthāvareṣu cit | tatrādūrasthitā muktirmanye vedyavidāṃ vara || 12 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Where consciousness is established in the non-duality of existence, there liberation is considered near by the best among the knowers of the knowable.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | buddhipūrvaṃ vicāryedaṃ yathāvastvavalokanāt | sattāsāmānyabodho yaḥ sa mokṣaścedanantakaḥ || 13 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: By contemplating this with intelligence and by seeing the reality as it is, the realization of the commonality of existence is infinite liberation.

parijñāya parityāgo vāsanānāṃ ya uttamaḥ | sattāsāmānyarūpatvaṃ tatkaivalyapadaṃ viduḥ || 14 ||

English

By knowing and renouncing the best of desires, one realizes the state of the commonality of existence, which is known as the state of Kaivalya (isolation).

vicāryāryaiḥ sahālokya śāstrāṇyadhyātmabhāvanāt | sattāsāmānyaniṣṭhatvaṃ yattadbrahma paraṃ viduḥ || 15 ||

English

By contemplating with the wise and by studying the scriptures through spiritual reflection, one realizes the state of the commonality of existence, which is known as the supreme Brahman.

antaḥ saṃlīnamananaṃ paritaḥ suptavāsanam| suṣuptaṃ jaḍadharmāpi janma duḥkhaśatapradam || 17 ||

English

The mind absorbed within, the senses dormant around, deep sleep, though inert, brings birth and a hundred sorrows.

sthāvarādaya ete hi samastā jaḍadharmiṇaḥ| suṣuptapadamārūḍhā janmayogyāḥ punaḥpunaḥ || 18 ||

English

All these immovable beings are indeed inert, having ascended to the state of deep sleep, they are fit for birth again and again.

yathā bījeṣu puṣpādi mṛdo rāśau ghaṭo yathā| tathāntaḥ saṃsthitā sādho sthāvareṣu svavāsanā || 19 ||

English

Just as a flower is latent in the seed and a pot in the clay, so too, O sage, the inherent tendencies are latent within the immovable beings.

yatrāsti vāsanābījaṃ tatsuṣuptaṃ na siddhaye| nirbījā vāsanā yatra tatturyaṃ siddhidaṃ smṛtam || 20 ||

English

Where there is the seed of tendency, that deep sleep does not lead to perfection. Where there is seedless tendency, that is known as the fourth state which grants perfection.

vāsanāyāstathā vahnereṇavyādhidviṣāmapi| snehavairaviṣāṇāṃ yaḥ śeṣaḥ svalpo'pi bādhate || 21 ||

English

Just as even a small remnant of fire, debt, disease, enmity, affection, enmity, or poison causes trouble, so does even a small remnant of tendency.

nirdagdhvāsanābījasattāsāmānyarūpavān sadeho vā videho vā na bhūyo duḥkhabhāgbhavet || 22 ||

English

One who has burned the seeds of desires and has attained the universal form of existence, whether embodied or disembodied, will not experience suffering again.

cicchaktirvāsanābījarūpiṇī svāpadharmiṇī sthitā rasatayā nityaṃ sthāvarādiṣu vastuṣu || 23 ||

English

The power of consciousness, which takes the form of the seeds of desires and is inherent in all beings, eternally resides in all substances, from the immovable to the movable.

bījeṣūllāsarūpeṇa jāḍyena jaḍarūpiṣu dravyeṣu dravyabhāvena kāṭhinyenetareṣu ca || 24 ||

English

In the form of seeds, it manifests as inertness in inert substances, as materiality in material substances, and as hardness in other substances.

bhasmanyathānityarūpā pāṃsuṣvapyṇurūpiṇī asiteṣvasitasthityā sitadhāratayāsiṣu || 25 ||

English

In ashes, it appears as impermanent form; in dust, it appears as atomic form; in black substances, it appears as black; in white substances, it appears as white.

ātmā śaktiḥ padārtheṣu tathā ghaṭapaṭādiṣu sarvatra sattāsāmānyarūpamāśritya tiṣṭhati || 26 ||

English

The self, which is the power, resides in all objects and entities, such as pots and cloth, by relying on the universal form of existence.

itīyamakhilā dṛśyadaśāmāpūrya saṃsthitā | yathā ghaṭāpaṭā prāvṛḍambarālambinī tathā || 27 ||

English

Thus, this entire visible state is filled and established, just as the clouds are supported by the rainy season.

svarūpamasyāścaivaitatkathitaṃ pravicāritam | asarvaṃ sarvato vyāpi sadivāsanmayātmakam || 28 ||

English

The nature of this has been described and examined. It is not everything, yet it pervades everything, and it is of the nature of pure existence.

ātmadṛṣṭiradṛṣṭaiṣā saṃsārabhramadāyinī | dṛṣṭā satī samagrāṇāṃ duḥkhānāṃ kṣayakāriṇī || 29 ||

English

This self-vision is unseen and causes the delusion of the world. When seen, it is the destroyer of all sufferings.

asyāstvadarśanaṃ yattadavidyetyucyate budhaiḥ | avidyā hi jagaddhetustataḥ sarvaṃ pravartate || 30 ||

English

The non-vision of this is called ignorance by the wise. Indeed, ignorance is the cause of the world, and from it, everything arises.

avidyā rūparahitā yāvadevāvalokyate | tāvadeva galatyāśu tuhināṇuryathātape || 31 ||

English

Ignorance, which is devoid of form, disappears as soon as it is seen, just as a small piece of ice melts in the sun.

yathā naro galannidro yāvatkalanayā manāk | vimṛśatyāśayaṃ tāvannidrā tasya vilīyate || 32 ||

English

Just as a person, while falling asleep, as soon as he reflects on his intention, his sleep dissolves.

yathā kīdṛgavastvetaditi yāvadvikalpyate | avidyā kṣīyate tāvadālokenāndhatā yathā || 33 ||

English

Just as one wonders 'what kind of thing is this?' as soon as it is imagined, ignorance is destroyed, just like blindness by light.

dīpahasto yathābhyeti tamorūpadidṛkṣayā | tathā vilīyate sarvaṃ tamastāpairghṛtaṃ yathā || 34 ||

English

Just as a person with a lamp approaches to see the form of darkness, similarly, all darkness is dissolved by the light, just like ghee by heat.

naca saṃlakṣyate dīpe tamaso rūpaniścayaḥ | udeti kevalaṃ dhvāntadhvaṃso vimalamūrtimān || 35 ||

English

And in the lamp, the form of darkness is not perceived, only the pure form of the destruction of darkness arises.

evamālokyamānaiṣā kvāpi yāti palāyate | asadrūpā hyavastutvāddṛśyate hyavicāraṇāt || 36 ||

English

Thus, when it is observed, it goes away somewhere, being of an unreal form, it is seen due to lack of examination.

āloka āgate yādṛktamastaddṛśyate tathā | yā'vastutve tvavidyāyāstvavastutvaṃ pratīyate || 37 ||

English

Just as the appearance of light reveals objects as they are, so too, the nature of ignorance is perceived as non-existent.

yāvannālokyate tāvanna kiṃcidapi dṛśyate | ālokite yathā'vidyā tattathā pratipadyate || 38 ||

English

As long as it is not illuminated, nothing is seen. When illuminated, ignorance is perceived as it is.

raktamāṃsāsthiyantre'sminkaḥ syāmahamiti svayamyāvadvicāryate tāvatsarvamāśu vilīyate || 39 ||

English

In this body made of blood, flesh, and bones, who am I? As long as this is not examined, everything quickly dissolves.

ādyantayorasadrūpe nūnaṃ parihṛte hṛdā | sarvasminneva yaḥ śeṣastamavidyākṣayaṃ viduḥ || 40 ||

English

When the non-existent forms at the beginning and the end are certainly removed from the heart, what remains in everything is known as the destruction of ignorance.

tanna kiṃcicca kiṃcidvā tatsadbrahmaiva śāśvatam | tadvastu tadupādeyaṃ yadavidyā nivartate || 41 ||

English

That is neither something nor nothing. That is the eternal true Brahman. That reality is to be accepted where ignorance ceases.

rūpaṃ svanāmna evāsyā jñāyate niḥsvabhāvakam | nahi jihvāgatasvādyasvādo'nyasmātpratīyate || 42 ||

English

The form is known by its own name as devoid of inherent nature | The taste experienced by the tongue is not perceived from another || 42 ||

nāvidyā kvacidapyasti brahmaivedamakhṇḍitam | sadasatkalanāsphāramśeṣaṃ yena maṇḍitam || 43 ||

English

There is no ignorance anywhere | This Brahman is indivisible | By which the entire manifestation of existence and non-existence is adorned || 43 ||

etāvadevāvidyāyā nedaṃ brahmeti niścayaḥ | etadeva kṣayo yasyā brahmedamiti niścayaḥ || 44 ||

English

This much is the certainty of ignorance | This is not Brahman | The destruction of that which is the certainty | This is Brahman || 44 ||
