26

ādhivyādhivilāsānāṃ rāma sārādhisankṣayaḥ | sarveṣāṃ mūlahā prāvṛṇnadīva taṭavīrudhām || 26 ||

English

O Rama, the essence of mental afflictions, physical ailments, and worldly pleasures is their diminution. Just as a river erodes the roots of trees on its banks, so too these afflictions erode the essence of all beings.

English

However, diseases that are not caused by mental afflictions can be cured by auspicious means such as medicines, mantras, and other methods prescribed in medical treatises.

29

Sri Vasistha said: When the mind is disturbed, the body experiences agitation. Indeed, an angry person does not see things clearly.

anavekṣya puro mārgamamārgamanudhāvati | prakṛtaṃ mārgamutsṛjya śarārto hariṇo yathā || 31 ||

English

Without examining the path ahead, one rushes into the wrong path, like a deer wounded by an arrow abandons its natural path.

saṃkṣobhātsāmyamutsṛjya vahanti prāṇavāyavaḥ | dehe gajapraviṣṭena payāṃsīva sarittaṭe || 32 ||

English

Due to agitation, the vital airs abandon their equilibrium, just as the waters of a river are disturbed when an elephant enters it.

asamaṃ vahati prāṇe nāḍyo yānti visaṃsthitim | asamyaksamsthite bhūpe yathā varṇāśramakramāḥ || 33 ||

English

When the vital air is uneven, the channels become disordered, just as the social order is disrupted when the king is improperly established.

kāścinnāḍyaḥ prapūrṇatvaṃ yānti kāścicca riktatām | prāṇā'āvidhurite dehe sarvataḥ sarito yathā || 34 ||

English

Some channels become full while others become empty when the vital air is disturbed in the body, just as rivers flow in all directions.

kujīrṇatvamajīrṇatvamatijīrṇatvameva vā | doṣāyaiva prayātyannaṃ prāṇasaṃcāraduṣkramāt || 35 ||

English

Food may lead to indigestion, proper digestion, or over-digestion due to the improper movement of vital air, which leads to imbalance.

yathā kāṣṭhāni nayati prācīdeśaṃ saridrayaḥ| tathānnāni nayatyantaḥ prāṇavātaḥ svamāśrayam || 36 ||

English

Just as the river carries wood to the eastern direction, similarly, the vital air carries food to its own place.

yānyannāni nirodhena tiṣṭhantyantaḥśarīrake| tānyeva vyādhitāṃ yānti pariṇāmasvabhāvataḥ || 37 ||

English

The foods that remain undigested within the body, those very foods turn into diseases due to their transformative nature.

evamādherbhavedvyādhistasyābhāvācca naśyati| yathā mantrairvinaśyanti vyādhayastatkramam śṛṇu || 38 ||

English

Thus, diseases arise from undigested food, and they disappear due to its absence. Just as diseases are destroyed by mantras, listen to that sequence.

yathā virekaṃ kurvanti harītakyaḥ svabhāvataḥ| bhāvanāvaśataḥ kāyaṃ tathā yaralavādayaḥ || 39 ||

English

Just as Haritaki naturally causes purgation, similarly, other herbs like Yaralava affect the body through their properties.

English

O virtuous one, with pure and meritorious actions, the mind attains purity, just as gold is purified by the touchstone.

ānando vardhate dehe śuddhe cetasi rāghava | pūrṇendāvudite hyatra nairmalyam bhuvane yathā || 41 ||

English

O Raghava, joy increases in a pure body and mind, just as the full moon shines brightly in the clear sky.

sattvaśuddhyā vahantyete krameṇa prāṇavāyavaḥ | jarayanti tathānnāni vyādhistena vinaśyati || 42 ||

English

Through the purity of the mind, the vital airs function properly, digesting food and thus eliminating disease.

English

puryaṣṭakaparākhyasya jīvasya prāṇanāmikām | viddhi kuṇḍalinīmantarāmōdasyeva mañjarīm || 44 ||

English

tadā samastamevedamutplāvayati dehakam | nīrandhraṃ pavanāpūrṇaṃ bhastravāmbu tatāntaram || 48 ||

English

Then, it floods the entire body, which is filled with air and without any holes, like water in a leather bag.

Even the absence perceived directly is a valid proof, O Raghunandana. The absence of fire is also a proof of cold for all beings.

citsūrye nirmale dṛṣṭe nāma naśyedbhavodayam | vyomasūrye bahirdṛṣṭe yathā kṛṣṇaniśātamaḥ || 104 ||

English

When the pure consciousness (citsūrye) is seen, the cycle of birth and death (bhava-udayam) is destroyed, just as the darkness of night (kṛṣṇa-niśā-tamaḥ) is destroyed when the sun in the sky (vyoma-sūrye) is seen.

106

somaṃ prakaṭayatyagniściddehasya ciraṃ prabhām | svasaṃvinmayaminduściddhehasthaṃ rūpamarkajam || 106 ||

English

Fire (agni) reveals the eternal radiance (prabhām) of the body of consciousness (ciddehasya). The moon (indu), which is of the nature of self-awareness (svasaṃvinmayam), reveals the form (rūpam) of the sun (arkajam) within the body of consciousness.

cinniṣkriyā tv anāmā sā kevalā nopalabhyate | āloka iva dīpena dehenaivāvagamyate || 107 ||

English

The consciousness, which is actionless and nameless, cannot be perceived alone; it is understood through the body, just as light is perceived through a lamp.

citaścetyonmukhatvena lābhaḥ saiva ca saṃsṛtiḥ | niścetyāyāḥ śubho lābhaḥ nirvāṇaṃ vā tadeva hi || 108 ||

English

The gain of consciousness is its inclination towards activity, and that is the worldly existence. The gain of the absence of consciousness is auspicious, and that is indeed liberation.

anyonyalabdhasadvākyāvevaṃ kuḍyaprakāśavat | agnīṣomāvimau jñeyo saṃpṛktau dehadehinau || 109 ||

English

Thus, the body and the self are interdependent, like the two halves of a sentence that are understood in relation to each other, or like the fire and the moon that are perceived together.

atiśāyini nirvāṇe jāḍye caivātiśāyini | agnīṣomasya caivāṅga sthitirbhavati kevalā || 110 ||

English

In the state of supreme liberation and in the state of supreme inertia, the condition of the fire and the moon becomes singular.

111

prāṇo'gniruṣṇaprakṛtirapānaḥ śītalaḥ śaśī | chāyātapavadityetau saṃsthitau mukhamārgagau || 111 ||

English

The vital breath (prāṇa) is like fire, hot in nature, while the downward breath (apāna) is like the moon, cool in nature. These two are situated in the path of the mouth, like shadow and heat.

apāne śītale sattāmetyuṣṇaḥ prāṇapāvakaḥ | pratibimbamivādarśe sa ca tasmiṃstathaiva hi || 112 ||

English

The cool apana (downward breath) merges with the hot prana (upward breath), reflecting like an image in a mirror, and it is the same in that.

cidagniḥ padmapatrasthaṃ somaṃ vācātmakaṃ tviṣā | janayaty anubhūtyeha kuḍyālokaṃ yathā bahiḥ || 113 ||

English

The fire of consciousness, situated in the petals of the lotus, produces the moon-like speech-self with its brilliance, creating an experience here like the light of a wall outside.

114

saṃsṛtyādau yathā kācit saṃvicchītoṣṇarūpiṇī | agnīṣomābhidhāṃ prāptā saiva sar ge nṛṇāmiha || 114 ||

English

In the beginning of transmigration, a certain consciousness takes the form of cool and hot, known as Agni and Soma, and it is the same in the creation of humans here.

115

English

Where the lunar digit is eclipsed by the sun for a moment, the duration of two and a half measures from the mouth, there one should be with bound feet.

nūnaṃ sūryapadaṃ prāpto yatra somo hṛdambare | nūnaṃ kevalayā sthityā tatra baddhapado bhava || 116 ||

English

Certainly, where the moon reaches the solar region in the heart, certainly by mere existence there, one should be with bound feet.

uṣṇamagniścidādityaḥ śaityaṃ soma udāhṛtam yatraitau pratibimbasthau tatra baddhapado bhava || 117 ||

English

Heat is said to be fire and consciousness is the sun. Coolness is said to be the moon. Where these two are reflected, there one becomes bound.

118

English

O sinless one, know the transitions of the moon, sun, and fire in the body. There, the times of transitions are remembered as external like grass.

English

If you know the proper time of the transition and the solstices, and if you understand the internal and external winds of the body as experienced, then you will shine here, not again seeking the supreme.
