athaikadā pure śreṣṭhe kasmiṃścinmaṇḍalāntareanapatye nṛpaṃ mṛtyurahanmatsya ivāmiṣam || 1 ||
Once, in a certain excellent city, in a particular place, death seized the king who had no son, like a fish seizing bait.
एक बार किसी श्रेष्ठ नगर में, एक विशिष्ट स्थान में, मृत्यु ने पुत्रहीन राजा को मछली के समान बैट को पकड़ लिया।
तत्र प्रकृतयः खिन्ना नष्टदेशक्रमा नृपमन्विष्यन्ति स्म संयुक्तं गुणलक्ष्म्या विशालया || २ ||
tatra prakṛtayaḥ khinnā naṣṭadeśakramā nṛpamanviṣyanti sma saṃyuktaṃ guṇalakṣmyā viśālayā || 2 ||
There, the distressed subjects, whose country was destroyed, sought the king, who was endowed with good qualities and prosperity.
वहाँ, जिनका देश नष्ट हो चुका था, उन दुखी प्रजाओं ने गुणों और समृद्धि से सम्पन्न राजा को ढूँढा।
तं भगीरथमासाद्य स्थिरं भिक्षाचरं मुनिम्परिज्ञाय समानीय सैन्ये चक्रुर्महीपतिम् || ३ ||
taṃ bhagīrathamāsādya sthiraṃ bhikṣācaraṃ munimparijñāya samānīya sainye cakrurmahīpatim || 3 ||
Approaching Bhagiratha, who was steadfast and wandering as a mendicant, recognizing him as a sage, they brought him to the army and made him the king.
भगीरथ के पास जाकर, जो स्थिर और भिक्षु के रूप में घूमता था, उन्होंने उसे एक ऋषि के रूप में पहचाना और उसे सेना में ले आए और उसे राजा बनाया।
भगीरथः क्षणेनैव प्रावृषीवाम्बुना सरःवलितः सेनया गुर्व्या झटित्याशिश्रिये गजम् || ४ ||
bhagīrathaḥ kṣaṇenaiva prāvṛṣīvāmbunā saraḥvalitaḥ senayā gurvyā jhaṭityāśiśriye gajam || 4 ||
Bhagiratha, in an instant, like a lake filled with rainwater, was surrounded by a heavy army and quickly ascended the elephant.
भगीरथ एक क्षण में, जैसे बारिश के पानी से भरा तालाब, भारी सेना से घिर गया और तुरंत हाथी पर चढ़ गया।
भगीरथो जगन्नाथो जयतीति जनारवैःनीरन्ध्रतामुपाजग्मुर्गिरीन्द्राणां महागुहा || ५ ||
bhagīratho jagannātho jayatīti janāravaiḥnīrandhratāmupājagmurgirīndrāṇāṃ mahāguhā || 5 ||
Bhagiratha, the lord of the world, victorious, was praised by the people and attained the highest position among the great mountains.
भगीरथ, जगत् के स्वामी, विजयी, जनता द्वारा प्रशंसित हुआ और महान पर्वतों में सबसे ऊँची स्थिति प्राप्त की।
तत्र तं पालयन्तं तद्राज्यं राजानमादृताःआजग्मुः प्राक्प्रकृतयः प्राहुरित्थं नृपाधिपम् || ६ ||
tatra taṃ pālayantaṃ tadrājyaṃ rājānamādṛtāḥājagmuḥ prākprakṛtayaḥ prāhuritthaṃ nṛpādhipam || 6 ||
There, the ministers and subjects, respecting the king who was protecting that kingdom, approached and said this to the ruler.
वहाँ, मंत्री और प्रजा, उस राज्य की रक्षा करते हुए राजा का सम्मान करते हुए, उसके पास गए और शासक से यह कहा।
प्रकृतय ऊचुःराजन्नस्माकमधिपो यस्त्वया स पुरस्कृतःमृत्युना विनिगीर्णोऽसौ मत्स्येनेवामिषं मृदु || ७ ||
prakṛtaya ūcuḥrājannasmākamadhipo yastvayā sa puraskṛtaḥmṛtyunā vinigīrṇo'sau matsyenevāmiṣaṃ mṛdu || 7 ||
The subjects said, 'O King, our ruler whom you appointed has been swallowed by death like a fish swallows soft bait.'
प्रजा ने कहा, 'हे राजन्, जिस शासक को आपने नियुक्त किया था, उसे मृत्यु ने मछली के समान नरम बैट को निगल लिया है।'
तत्तत्पालयितुं राज्यं प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसिअप्रार्थितोपयातानां त्यागोऽर्थानां च नोचितः || ८ ||
tattatpālayituṃ rājyaṃ prasādaṃ kartumarhasiaprārthitopayātānāṃ tyāgo'rthānāṃ ca nocitaḥ || 8 ||
You should protect that kingdom and show grace. It is not appropriate to abandon those who have come seeking help.
आपको उस राज्य की रक्षा करनी चाहिए और कृपा दिखानी चाहिए। मदद माँगने वालों को छोड़ना उचित नहीं है।
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाचैति संप्रार्थितो राजा तदङ्गीकृत्य तद्वचःसप्तसागरचिह्नायाः स बभूव भुवः पतिः || ९ ||
śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaiti saṃprārthito rājā tadaṅgīkṛtya tadvacaḥsaptasāgaracihnāyāḥ sa babhūva bhuvaḥ patiḥ || 9 ||
Sri Vasistha said, 'Thus, the king, being requested, accepted their words and became the ruler of the earth marked by the seven seas.'
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा, 'इस प्रकार, राजा, अनुरोध किए जाने पर, उनके शब्दों को स्वीकार करते हुए, सात समुद्रों से चिह्नित पृथ्वी का शासक बन गया।'
समः शान्तमना मौनी वीतरागो विमत्सरःप्राप्तकार्यैककरणः स तिरोहितविस्मय || १० ||
samaḥ śāntamanā maunī vītarāgo vimatsaraḥprāptakāryaikakaraṇaḥ sa tirohitavismaya || 10 ||
He was calm, peaceful, silent, free from desire and envy, focused on achieving his goal, and devoid of wonder.
वह शांत, मन में शांति, मौन, इच्छा और ईर्ष्या से मुक्त, अपने लक्ष्य पर केंद्रित और आश्चर्य से रहित था।
पातालतलनष्टानां सागराकारकारिणांपितामहानां गङ्गाम्बु शुश्रुवे तारणक्षमम् || ११ ||
pātālatalanaṣṭānāṃ sāgarākārakāriṇāmpitāmahānāṃ gaṅgāmbu śuśruve tāraṇakṣamam || 11 ||
The water of the Ganges, capable of saving the ancestors who were destroyed and made into an ocean in the underworld, was heard.
पाताल में नष्ट हुए और सागर के रूप में परिवर्तित पितामहों को बचाने की क्षमता रखने वाले गंगा जल की खबर मिली।
तदा किल स्वर्गनदी वहति स्म न भूतलेपितृणां भूतविख्योऽभूत्तेन गङ्गाजलाञ्जलिः || १२ ||
tadā kila svarganadī vahati sma na bhūtalepitṝṇāṃ bhūtavikhyo'bhūttena gaṅgājalāñjaliḥ || 12 ||
At that time, the heavenly river did not flow for the ancestors who were smeared on the earth. The water of the Ganges was offered with the name of the beings.
उस समय, स्वर्ग की नदी पृथ्वी पर लिपटे हुए पितामहों के लिए नहीं बही। गंगा जल प्राणियों के नाम से अर्पित किया गया।
भगीरथेन च महीमवतारयितुं दिवःगङ्गां गृहीतो नियमस्ततःप्रभृति भूभृता || १३ ||
bhagīrathena ca mahīmavatārayituṃ divaḥgaṅgāṃ gṛhīto niyamastataḥprabhṛti bhūbhṛtā || 13 ||
Bhagiratha took a vow to bring down the Ganges from heaven to earth, and from that time onwards, the earth has been sustained.
भगीरथ ने स्वर्ग से गंगा को पृथ्वी पर लाने के लिए व्रत लिया, और तब से पृथ्वी सुरक्षित है।
ततो राज्यं परित्यज्य मन्त्रिणां भूपतिः शमीतपसे कार्यकार्येहो जगाम विजनं वनम् || १४ ||
tato rājyaṃ parityajya mantriṇāṃ bhūpatiḥ śamītapase kāryakāryeho jagāma vijanaṃ vanam || 14 ||
Then, the king, abandoning his kingdom and ministers, went to a solitary forest to perform penance for the sake of duty.
तब, राजा ने अपना राज्य और मंत्रियों को छोड़ दिया और कर्तव्य के लिए तपस्या करने के लिए एकांत वन में चले गए।
तत्र वर्षसहस्रैश्च समाराध्य पुनःपुनःब्रह्माणं शंकरं जह्नुं भुवि गङ्गामयोजयत् || १५ ||
tatra varṣasahasraiśca samārādhya punaḥpunaḥbrahmāṇaṃ śaṃkaraṃ jahnuṃ bhuvi gaṅgāmayojayat || 15 ||
There, by worshipping for thousands of years repeatedly, he united the Ganges with Brahma, Shankara, and Jahnu on earth.
वहाँ, हजारों वर्षों तक बार-बार पूजा करके, उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर ब्रह्मा, शंकर और जह्नु के साथ गंगा को जोड़ा।
ततः प्रभृत्यमलतरङ्गभङ्गिनी जगत्पतेः शशिविभृदङ्गसङ्गिनी | नभस्तलान्निपतति गां त्रिमार्गगा महात्मनामिव बहुपुण्यसंततिः || १६ ||
tataḥ prabhṛtyamalataraṅgabhaṅginī jagatpateḥ śaśivibhṛdaṅgasanginī | nabhastalānni patati gāṃ trimārgagā mahātmanāmiva bahupuṇyasaṃtatiḥ || 16 ||
From then on, the Ganges, which breaks the waves of impurities, and is adorned with the moon-like emblem of the Lord of the universe, descends from the sky to the earth, following three paths, like the continuous virtuous deeds of great souls.
तब से, पापों की लहरों को तोड़ने वाली और विश्व के स्वामी के चंद्रमा-सदृश चिह्न से सुशोभित गंगा, आकाश से पृथ्वी पर तीन मार्गों से उतरती है, मानो महान आत्माओं के लगातार पुण्य कार्य हों।
स्फुरत्तरङ्गभङ्गिनी स्वफेनपुञ्जहासिनी प्रसन्नपुण्यमञ्जरीयुतेव धर्मसंततिः | भगीरथे महीपतौ यशःप्रचारवीथिका तदा हि सा त्रिमार्गगा महीतले बभूव ह || १७ ||
sphurattaraṅgabhaṅginī svaphenapuñjahāsinī prasannapuṇyamañjarīyuteva dharmasaṃtatiḥ | bhagīrathe mahīpatau yaśaḥpracāravīthikā tadā hi sā trimārgagā mahītale babhūva ha || 17 ||
The Ganges, which breaks the sparkling waves and laughs with its own foam, is endowed with the pleasant garland of virtues, like the continuous flow of righteousness. At that time, in the reign of King Bhagiratha, she became famous and spread her glory, following three paths on the earth.
गंगा, जो चमकीली लहरों को तोड़ती है और अपने फेन से हँसती है, प्रसन्न पुण्य की माला से सुशोभित है, मानो धर्म का लगातार प्रवाह हो। उस समय, राजा भगीरथ के शासनकाल में, वह पृथ्वी पर तीन मार्गों से अपनी ख्याति और यश फैलाती हुई प्रसिद्ध हो गई।
