16.45.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atremāmavabodhāya vismayollāsakāriṇīm | apūrvāṃ caiva saṃkṣepādrāma ramyāṃ kathāṃ śṛṇu || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Now, Rama, listen briefly to this pleasant and never-before-told story, which will bring wonder and joy, so that you may understand.

yojanānāṃ sahasrāṇi vipulaṃ vimalaṃ sphuṭam | yugairapyajaradrūpamasti bilvaphalaṃ mahat || 2 ||

There is a great bilva fruit, thousands of yojanas across, vast, clear and bright, whose form never grows old, even through the ages.

36.45.3

avināśarasādhāraṃ sudhāmadhurasāravat | purāṇamapi bālendudalamārdavasundaram || 3 ||

Its juice never spoils, sweet like the very essence of nectar. Though very old, it is soft and lovely, like the crescent of a young moon.

vyūhamadhyamahāmeruṃ mandarādririvācalam | mahākalpāntavātyāyā api vegairacālitam || 4 ||

It stands like the great Mount Meru amid the ranges, unmoving like Mount Mandara. Even the fierce winds of the storm at the end of a great world age cannot shake it.

yasya bilvaphalasyoccai brahmāṇḍāni samīpataḥ | haranti līlāṃ śailādho rājikākaṇapaddhatteḥ || 5 ||

Next to this bilva fruit, all the universes nearby look as small as a row of mustard seeds lying at the foot of a mountain.

syandamānarasāpūrāṃ svādvīṃ rasacamatkṛtim| yasyātiśete no kaścidapi rāghava ṣaḍrasaḥ || 7 ||

It is full of flowing, sweet juice, a marvel of taste. Rama, not one of the six flavors can surpass it.

na kadācana pākena pātaṃ tena sameti yat| sadaiva pakvamapyanga jarasā yanna bādhyate || 8 ||

It never spoils or decays through ripening. Dear one, though it is always ripe, old age never touches it.

brahmaviṣṇvindrarudrādyā jarṭhāḥ kecid eva na| yasyotpattiṃ vijānanti mūlaṃ vā vṛntameva ca || 9 ||

Not even the old gods, Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, Rudra and the rest, know where it came from, or where its root is, or where its stem is.

adṛṣṭāṅkuravṛkṣasya tvadṛṣṭakusumākṛteḥ| astambhamūlaśākhasya phalasyāsya mahākṛteḥ || 10 ||

This great fruit grew on a tree whose sprout no one ever saw and whose flower no one ever saw either, a tree with no trunk, no root and no branch.

116.45.11

ekapiṇḍaghanākāravitata sthaulyaśālinaḥ| yasyotpatti vikārādipariṇāmo na dṛśyate || 11 ||

It has the shape of a single dense mass, spread out and huge. No one has ever seen it being born, or changing, or its form shifting in any way.

samastaphalasārasya phalasyāsya mahākṛteḥ | na majjā nāṣṭhi vitato nirvikāro nirañjanaḥ || 12 ||

This great fruit is the essence of all fruits. It has no stone and no seed pulp; it is vast, it never changes, and it is spotless.

śilāntariva nīrandhraḥ syandamānendubimbavat | rasaṃ svasaṃvidāsvādyaṃ syandamāna ivāmṛtam || 13 ||

It is solid, without a single gap, like the inside of a rock, yet it flows like the disc of the moon. Its juice, which only one's own awareness can taste, flows on like nectar.

kośaḥ sakalasaukhyānāṃ śītalālokakārakaḥ | śailābho'mṛtapiṇḍābho majjāātmaphalasthiteḥ || 14 ||

It is a storehouse of every comfort, giving off a cool light. It looks like a mountain, like a lump of nectar, the covering around the marrow-self that lives inside this fruit.

tasmātparamamajjā tu yāsau svātmacamatkṛtiḥ | anantarakṣito nityamananyaḥ śrīphalaṃ gataḥ || 15 ||

So that highest marrow, the very wonder of one's own self, always guarded, never broken, and without a second, has become this glorious fruit.

svasaṃniveśavaicitryamanyatvaphalatāṃ gatām | atyajantyā tayā tanvyā sthūlayāpyatibālayā || 16 ||

The many different forms of her own making turned into this fruit of otherness. That slender one did not give it up, though she was also vast, and though she was very young.

iyamasmeeti kalanaadasadapyanyataamalam | bhedaadyasambhavadidam svayamutpaadya bhaavitam || 17 ||

By the thought I am this, though it was not real, this became something wholly other. Such a division could not have been possible, yet it produced this out of itself and made it seem real.

186.45.18

ahankaalasamudayasamanantaramaeva saa | valitaakaashashabdaangatrailokyaparamaanubhih || 18 ||

Right after this fragment of I arose, she got tangled up with the atoms of space, sound, the body and the three worlds.

ityanukramato yaataa samvichchaktisvarupataam | majjaa praak sannivesham svam tamevaapy samujjhati || 19 ||

In this way, step by step, she came to have the very nature of the power of consciousness. On reaching that same state, the marrow let go of her own earlier form.

samvichchaktayaa tayaa tatra tatastaralaruupayaa | nija eva same ruupe drigittham samprasaaritaa || 20 ||

Through that power of awareness, which was trembling there in shape, seeing then spread itself out into that same one form, its very own.

idam vyoma mahaanantamiyam kaalamayee kalaa | iyam niyatiritiuktaa kriyeyam spandaruupinee || 21 ||

This is space, vast and endless. This is the portion made of time. This is called destiny. And this is action, taking the form of vibration.

226.45.22

ayaṃ saṃkalpavistārastvayamāśāntarabhramaḥ | rāgadveṣasthitiriyam heyopādeyadhīriyam || 22 ||

This is the spreading out of the will. This is the wandering from one desire to another. This is the state of liking and disliking. This is the mind that decides what to take and what to leave.

iyaṃ tvattā tviyaṃ mattā tatteyaṃ saṃsthitā svayam | brahmāṇḍaugho'yamūrdhvasthaḥ svayamaṅgordhvamapyadhaḥ || 23 ||

This is your sense of being 'you,' and this is my sense of being 'I' — that too stands there on its own, as yours. This is the whole flood of universes, standing above, itself a body reaching both upward and downward.

ayaṃ puraḥ pārśvato'yaṃ paścāddārāddavīyasī | idaṃ bhūtaṃ vartamānaṃ bhaviṣyattvidamityapi || 24 ||

This is in front, this is at the side, this is behind, and this is far away, farther still. This is the past, this is the present, and this too is the future.

idaṃ bhūtaṃ vartamānaṃ bhaviṣyattvidamityapi | brahmāṇḍamaṇḍapāpīḍakrīḍāmaṇḍapamaṇḍalam || 25 ||

This is the past, this is the present, and this too is the future. This is the round crest that sits on the playing-hall built above the great hall of the universe.

anantakalanātattvaparipallavitā hareḥ | hṛdabjakarṇikā ceyaṃ lokapadmākṣamālikā || 26 ||

This is the whorl of Hari's heart-lotus, grown full with the truth of endless motion. And this is the string of beads on the world's lotus.

276.45.27

iyam kīrṇamahārudraghaṇāpūritakoṭarā | dīrghābhrasaraṇirbhāntadhvaṃsanebhyaḥ prabhāvinī || 27 ||

This one, her hollow filled with the scattered hosts of the great Rudras, is the long path through the clouds, with the power to destroy those who wander lost.

iyam meruḥ kakubhyatra jagatpaṅkajakarṇikā | sphuradindumadhūllāsalampaṭāmaraṣaṭpadā || 28 ||

This is Meru among the directions here, the whorl of the world's lotus, the deathless bee greedy for the joy of the nectar of the shimmering moon.

296.45.29

iyamuddāmasaugandhyasvargasrīpuṣpamañjarī | jagajjaraṭhavṛkṣasya rajonarakamūlinaḥ || 29 ||

This is the richly fragrant cluster of heaven's glorious flowers, on the old tree of the world whose root is in dust and hell.

iyam ca tārākiñjalkā brahmārṇavataṭasthitā | apārāpāraparyantā vyomalīlāsarojinī || 30 ||

And this is the lotus with stars for its filaments, standing on the shore of the ocean of Brahman, reaching all the way to what has no end, the lotus-plant that plays in the sky.

iyam kriyāparigrāhā taraṅgataralāvalī | sargāvartavidhānasthabhūribhūtaparamparā || 31 ||

This takes hold of every action, a row of trembling waves. She is the vast chain of beings caught in the whirlpool of creation's law.

iyattayā prasariṇī kṣaṇakalpādipallavātejaḥkesariṇī kālanalinī vyomapaṅkajā || 32 ||

She spreads out to her full measure, her shoots being the moment, the aeon, and every span of time between. Her filaments are light itself. She is the lotus of time, the lotus of the sky.

imā bhāvavikārāḍhyā jarāmṛtiviṣūcikāḥvidyāvidyāvilāsāḍhyā imāḥ śāstrārthadṛṣṭayaḥ || 33 ||

These, full of every change of state, are old age, death, and cholera. These, full of the play of knowledge and ignorance, are the views that give the scriptures their meaning.

iti sā tasya bilvasya nijamajjācamatkṛtiḥsaṃkalpasaṃniveśāntarevaiva kṛtasaṃsthitiḥ || 34 ||

Thus she is the wondrous pulp of that bel fruit, her place set only within the gap where the will comes to rest.

śāntā svasthā nirābādhā saumyā bhāvanayojjhitākartṛtvamapyakartṛtvaṃ kṛtvā'kṛtveva saṃsthitā || 35 ||

She is peaceful, at ease, untroubled, and gentle, free of imagining. Having done both acting and not acting, she stands as though she had done neither.

eṣaikikaiva vividheva vibhāvyamānā naikātmikā na vividhā nanu saiva saivasatyāsthitā sakalaśāntisamaikarūpā sarvātmikātimahatī citirūpaśaktiḥ || 36 ||

She alone, though seen as many, is not one alone and not many either. She indeed, she alone, stands as the truth. Equal to complete peace, one same form, the self of everything, immense — this is the power that takes the shape of awareness.
