śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kevaleneindriyaiḥ sārdhaṃ vartamānārthavartinā | asaṅgamena manasā yatkaroṣi na tatkṛtam || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Whatever you do with the senses engaged in the present moment, without attachment of the mind, is not truly done.

English

Just as an object gives joy at the moment of acquisition, but not afterwards, who has not experienced this?

vāñchākāle tuṣṭaye yattatra vāñchāiva kāraṇam | tuṣṭistvatuṣṭiparyantā tasmādvāñchāṃ parityaj || 4 ||

English

The satisfaction that comes from desire is due to the desire itself. Satisfaction lasts only until dissatisfaction arises, therefore, give up desire.

vāñchākāle yathā vastu tuṣṭaye nānyadā tathā | tasmātkṣaṇasukhe saktiṃ bālo badhnāti netaraḥ || 5 ||

English

Just as an object gives satisfaction at the time of desire, but not at other times, therefore, only a fool becomes attached to momentary pleasure, not others.

ātmajñānācalasyāgre rāma viśrāntavānasi | ahaṃbhāvamahāśvabhre na punaḥ pātam arhasi || 6 ||

English

O Rama, you have rested at the peak of the mountain of self-knowledge. You should not fall again into the great pit of ego.

yatsmṛtānantasaddṛṣṭerjñatvameruśiraḥsthiteḥ | punargarbhānukārāntaḥpātāle patanaṃ kutaḥ || 7 ||

English

If the knowledge of the eternal truth is remembered, how can one fall into the lower realms again, even after reaching the highest state?

dṛśyate te svabhāvo'yaṃ samatāsatyatāmayaḥ | manye kṣīṇavikalpo'si jāto'si hatakālikaḥ || 8 ||

English

I see your nature is equanimity and truthfulness. I believe you are free from doubts and have transcended the limitations of time.

svabhāve saṃsthito rāma ityāvedayatīva me | saumya pūrṇārṇavaprakhyā samatā nirmalā tava || 9 ||

English

O Rama, it seems to me that you are established in your true nature, which is pure and equanimous, like the vast ocean.

āśā yātu nirāśatvamabhāvaṃ yātu bhāvanam | amanastvaṃ mano yātu tavāsaṅgena jīvataḥ || 10 ||

English

May hope turn into despair, may non-existence turn into existence. May the mindless become mindful through your association.

yāṃ yāṃ vastudṛśaṃ yāsi tasyāṃ tasyāmavasthitam | sattāsāmānyarūpeṇa brahma bṛṃhitaciddhanam || 11 ||

English

Whatever object you see, in that very object, Brahman is present in the form of universal existence, the expansive consciousness.

English

You are bound by ignorance of the Self; you are not bound by knowledge of the Self. O Rama, awaken yourself by your own Self with great effort.

yatra na svadate vastu svadate ca yathāgatam | avāsanatvaṃ tadviddhi sāmyamākāśakomalam || 13 ||

English

Where no object is tasted, and everything is tasted as it is, know that to be the state of non-attachment, which is as subtle as the sky.

vāsanārahitairantarindriyairāhara kriyāḥ | na vikriyāmavāpnoṣi khavatkṣobhaśatairapi || 14 ||

English

With senses free from desires, perform actions. You will not experience any disturbance, even if there are hundreds of agitations.

jñātā jñānaṃ tathā jñeyaṃ trayamekatayātmani | śāntātmānubhavā'bhavyaṃ na bhūyo bhavabhāgasi || 15 ||

English

The knower, the knowledge, and the known are one in the Self. The experience of the peaceful Self is imperishable; you will not be subject to worldly existence again.

cittonmeṣanimeṣābhyāṃ saṃsārapralayodayau | vāsanāprāṇasaṃrodhādanimeṣaṃ manaḥ kuru || 16 ||

English

The opening and closing of the mind lead to the rise and fall of the world. Control the breath and desires, and make the mind steady.

prāṇonmeṣanimēṣābhyāṃ saṃsṛteḥ pralayodayau tamabhyāsaprayogābhyāmunmēṣarahitaṃ kuru || 17 ||

English

By the opening and closing of the breath, the cycles of creation and dissolution occur. Through practice and application, make it devoid of opening.

mauṛkhyonmeṣanimēṣābhyāṃ karmaṇāṃ pralayodayau tadvilīnaṃ kuru balādguruśāstrārthasaṃyamaiḥ || 18 ||

English

By the opening and closing of ignorance, the cycles of actions' dissolution and arising occur. Make it dissolved through the force of the guru's teachings and self-control.

yathā vātarajaḥsaṅgaspandātkhaṃ bhāvavedanam tathā citaścetyatayā spandādidamupasthitam || 19 ||

English

Just as the vibration of the wind-borne dust reveals the sky, so too does the vibration of consciousness reveal this world.

dṛśyadarśanasambandhaspandene yaṃ jagadgatiḥ sphuratyālokakuḍyādisaṃgajā varṇadhīriva || 20 ||

English

The movement of the world arises from the vibration of the relationship between the seer and the seen, just as the perception of colors arises from the contact with light and objects.

dṛśyadarśanasambandhaspandābhāve na jāyate veda nā bhavadābhāsā citrapuṃsāmivāśaye || 21 ||

English

In the absence of the vibration of the relationship between the seer and the seen, there is no perception, just as there is no reflection in a mirror without an object.

cittaspandotthitā māyā tadabhāve vilīyate | payaḥspandotthitā vīcistadabhāve vinaśyati || 22 ||

English

The illusion arises from the vibrations of the mind; it dissolves in their absence. The wave arises from the vibrations of water; it perishes in their absence.

tyāgena vāsanāṃśasya bodhādvā prāṇarodhanāt | citte nispandatāṃ yāte kutaḥ spandasya saṃbhavaḥ || 23 ||

English

By renouncing desires or through knowledge or by controlling the breath, when the mind becomes still, how can there be any vibration?

asaṃvitspandamātreṇa yāti cittamacittatām | prāṇānāṃ vā nirodhena tadeva ca paraṃ padam || 24 ||

English

By mere unconscious vibration, the mind attains the state of no-mind. Or by controlling the breath, that itself is the supreme state.

dṛśyadarśanasambandhe yatsukhaṃ pāramārthikam | tadantaikāntasaṃvittyā brahmadṛṣṭyā manaḥkṣayaḥ || 25 ||

English

The bliss that arises from the connection between the seer and the seen is ultimate. By the complete awareness of that, through the vision of Brahman, the mind dissolves.

yatra nābhyuditaṃ cittaṃ tattatsukhamakṛtrimam | na svargādau saṃbhavati marau himagṛhaṃ yathā || 26 ||

English

Where the mind is not agitated, there is that natural bliss. It does not occur in heaven or elsewhere, just as a snow house does not exist in the desert.

cittopaśamajaṃ sphāramavācyaṃ vacasā sukhamkṣayātiśayanirmuktaṃ nodeti na ca śāmyati || 27 ||

English

The bliss born of the mind's tranquility is indescribable in words. It is free from decay and excess, neither rises nor subsides.

bodhādbhavati cittānto durbodhāccittaveditā | bālavetālavattena mohaśrīrghanatāṃ gatā || 28 ||

English

From knowledge, the mind reaches its end; from ignorance, the mind is known. By this childlike ghost, delusion has become dense.

vidyamānamapi hyetaccittaṃ bodhādvilīyate | sadapyasadivābhāti tāmraṃ hemīkṛtaṃ yathā || 29 ||

English

Even though it exists, this mind dissolves through knowledge. It appears as if it is non-existent, like copper turned into gold.

jñasya cittaṃ na cittākhyaṃ jñacittaṃ sattvamucyate | nāmārthānyatvabhākcittaṃ bodhāttāmrasuvarṇavat || 30 ||

English

The mind of the knower is not called the mind; the mind of the knower is called the essence. The mind, which is different from name and form, becomes like gold from copper through knowledge.

na saṃbhavati cittatvaṃ tena tatpravilīyate | bhramaḥ śāmyati bodhena nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ || 31 ||

English

The nature of the mind does not exist; therefore, it dissolves. Delusion subsides through knowledge; there is no non-existence of the existent.

avastveva vikalpātma cittādi śaśaśṛṅgavat sarvaṃ tadātmanastasmāttaddhi bodhādvilīyate || 32 ||

English

Indeed, all that is perceived as the mind and its modifications is like the horns of a hare; therefore, all that is the Self, and it dissolves in knowledge.

cittaṃ sattvaṃ samāyātaṃ kiṃcitkālaṃ jagatsthitau vihṛtya turyāvasthāyāṃ turyātītaṃ bhavatyataḥ || 33 ||

English

The mind, having attained purity, remains in the world for some time, enjoying the fourth state, and then it becomes transcendent.

brahmaiva bhūribhavanabhramavibhramaughairitthaṃ sthitaṃ samamanekatayaikameva sarvātma saṃbhavati netaradaṅga kiṃcicchittādikaṃ ca na hṛdīva hi sanniveśaḥ || 34 ||

English

Brahman alone, being established thus, remains the same in manifold diversity, becoming the all-pervading Self. There is nothing else, not even the mind and its modifications, which can be considered as distinct from the Self.
