16.40.1

īśvara uvāca | yathākālaṃ yathārambhaṃ na karōṣi karōṣi yat | cinmātrasya śivasya antastadevārcanamātmanaḥ || 1 ||

Ishvara said: whatever you do, or do not do, at the right time, in whatever you take up, that very thing, within the pure awareness that is Shiva, is the worship of the self.

tenaivāhlādamāyāti yāti prakaṭatāṃ tathā | tathā sthitena rūpeṇa svenaiva svayamīśvaraḥ || 2 ||

Through that alone he comes to joy, and in the same way he comes into view. In that same form, just as it stands, the Lord becomes himself, through himself alone.

rāgadveṣādiśabdārthānātmanyanyatayāmale | saṃbhavanti pṛthagrūpāvahnau vahnikanā iva || 3 ||

Liking, disliking, and the other things such words mean, arise in the stainless self as if they were something else, taking separate shapes, the way sparks of fire arise in fire.

yadyadrājatvadīnatvasukhaduḥkhādivedanam | ātmīyaṃ parakīyaṃ ca tattadarcanamātmanaḥ || 4 ||

Whatever is felt, being a king, being poor, pleasure, pain, and the rest, whether felt as one's own or as someone else's, each of these is the worship of the self.

viśvasaṃvittirevārcā nityasyātmana eva ca | ghaṭādyātmatayā brahma svayamātmā tathaiva ca || 5 ||

The awareness of the whole world is itself the worship of the eternal self. And in the same way, Brahman itself, taking the form of a pot and other things, is the self itself.

śivaṃ śāntamanābhāsamēkaṃ bhāsvaramāgatam | jagatpratyayavatsarvamātmarūpamidaṃ sthitam || 6 ||

This whole world, peaceful, one, radiant, without any separate appearance, come into being, and auspicious, is nothing more than the idea called the world; it stands here as the form of the self.

aho nu citramātmaiva ghaṭādyanyadvyavasthitam | jīvādisvasvabhāvo'ntarnūnaṃ vismṛtimāniva || 7 ||

Oh, how strange indeed, the self alone stands here as something else, such as a pot. Its own nature as a living being must, deep inside, be as if it has forgotten itself.

sarvātmakasyānantasya śivasyaantaḥ kilātmanaḥ | pūjyapūjakapūjākhyo vibhramaḥ proditaḥ kutaḥ || 8 ||

Within the self that is the self of everything, endless and auspicious, from where indeed has this confusion arisen, the one called the worshipped, the worshipper, and the worship?

niyatākāratā śānte na ca saṃbhavatīśvare | yatra saṃkalpyate brahmanpūjyapūjāmayaḥ kramaḥ || 9 ||

A fixed form is not possible at all in the peaceful Lord, O Brahmin, the one in whom a sequence made of the worshipped and the worship is merely imagined.

pūjyapūjādyavacchinno devo nityāmalātmanaḥ | sarvaśakteranantasya neśvaratvasya bhājanam || 10 ||

A god who is limited by the worshipped, the worship, and the rest is not a fit vessel for the lordship of the eternal, stainless self, which holds every power and has no end.

trijagatprasṛtācchācchasaṃvidrūpasya cātmanaḥ neśvarasyākṛterbrahmanvyapadeśo hi yujyate || 11 ||

Of the self, whose nature is consciousness, utterly clear and spread through the three worlds, no name at all fits, O Brahmin, that formless Lord.

deśakālaparicchinno yeṣāṃ syātparameśvaraḥ asmākamupadeśyāste na vipaścidvipaścitām || 12 ||

Those for whom the highest Lord would be something limited by place and time need to be taught by us; they are not the wise among the wise.

tadīyāṃ dṛṣṭimutsṛjya tathemāmavalambya ca samaḥ svacchamanāḥ śānto vītarāgo nirāmayaḥ || 13 ||

Give up their way of seeing, and instead hold on to this one. Be even minded, clear in mind, at peace, free from craving, free from sickness.

146.40.14

kāmopahārairabhito yathāprāptairakhinnadhīḥ ātmānamarcayaṃstiṣṭha sukhaduḥkhaśubhāśubhaiḥ || 14 ||

Whatever desired things come to you from every side, just as they come, do not let your mind grow tired of them. Remain worshipping the self, through pleasure and pain, good and bad.

adhigatavati sādhau caikamevānurūpaṃ tvayi taralitajīve janmaduḥkhādi kiṃcit na lagati pariśūnye sarvataḥ sphāṭikāṅge navasadana ivāṅke niṣkalaṅke kalaṅkaḥ || 15 ||

Sage, once you have found the one thing that truly fits you, and your restless self has grown calm, no trace of birth or suffering clings to you any more, since you are empty on every side and your body is like crystal, just as a stain does not cling to a spotless disc in a new house.
