A person should always meditate, by their own self, on this supreme Shiva who lives in the body, who is one's own self, and who makes every act of knowing happen.
He stays calm within the body's organs, yet has let go of every other, inner mark. Through the knowing of whatever comes to hand, worship him as the emblem of pure awareness.
He stands among things that come and go like a flowing stream, and he is made pure by bathing in his own awareness. Worship this emblem of pure awareness with the endless offering of that same awareness.
He is the awareness that always knows the whole flood of things that appear; he flows out through the body's gateways, taking the form of the breath at the mouth.
He turns every taste into himself and becomes the fine horse of breath rising within the heart. Riding the chariot of the in-breath and the out-breath, he stays hidden, living in the secret cave of the heart.
He is the knower of every view of what can be known, the doer of every deed, the enjoyer of everything that can be enjoyed, the one who remembers every act of knowing.
Think of this Shiva, whose whole body of parts is known as one, who takes shape through the thought of what exists and what does not, who shines out in everything that appears, vast and present everywhere.
He is without parts, and he is with parts; he lives in the body, and he moves through the sky; he is free of color, and he is colored; he is, always, the awareness inside every single limb.
He is present in the mind's power to think; he rises between the in-breath and the out-breath; he sits in the middle of the heart, the throat, and the palate; he rests in the seat between the eyebrows and the nostrils.
He is present in the countless states of the thirty-six parts, and he goes beyond even the state where the mind stops. He stirs up the inner sounds, and he drives the mind onward like a bird in flight.
He is present in both paths of speech, the one full of thought and the one free of thought, and, like oil hidden inside a sesame seed, he is present inside every limb.
kalākalaṅkarahitaṃ kaṭhinaṃ ca kalāgaṇaiḥ | ekadeśe suhṛtpadme sarvadehe ca saṃsthitam || 17 ||
He carries no stain from his many parts, yet he is made firm by that same multitude of parts. He is settled in one place, the lotus of the heart, and he is present, too, in the whole body.
He is pure awareness alone, shining without any stain; he is the very thought that counts up all the parts; he can be seen directly everywhere, made entirely out of one's own experience.
He is the awareness turned inward, one's very own self, yet he appears again as one who wants and needs. Reaching quickly toward things, in a single moment he seems to have become two.
Many wonderful powers of many kinds, each acting in its own way, worship me without end, in the state of the mind, the way wives attend an excellent husband.
mano me dvārapālo'yaṃ niveditajagattrayaḥ | cinteyaṃ me pratīhārī dvārasthā śuddharūpiṇī || 22 ||
This mind of mine is the gatekeeper who brings me news of the three worlds. This thought of mine is the female doorkeeper, standing at the gate, pure in form.
The organs of action, together with the group of organs of perception, are its doors. I am this, I am that, the infinite self, whose form has cast off all division.
na tṛptiṃ na kṣudhaṃ yāti nābhivāñchati nojjhati | samaḥ samasamācāraḥ samābhāsaḥ samākṛtiḥ || 27 ||
It knows neither being full nor being hungry; it neither longs for anything nor gives anything up. It is even, its conduct is even, its look is even, its form is even.
With whatever comes, with all of it, one worships that one, keeping the understanding equal toward everything; that one who is pure awareness itself, the highest divine consciousness.
One should worship him with whatever comes, in whatever order it comes. Not even the smallest effort should be made here to obtain some new, unattained thing.
With this body one has been given, always; with this action done for a purpose; and with the pursuit of one's desires, one should worship the radiant, all-pervading lord.
With food to chew and food to eat, with grain and drink, rich with every kind of plenty; with bed, seat and carriage, just as one gets them, one should worship the auspicious one.
With the pleasure of fine food and drink, of enjoyment, of abundance and the like; with happiness of every kind, and with full awareness, one should worship the self.
And with all the countless doings that make up the world's ongoing life, with death, with life, with dreams and all such things, just as they come, one should worship the self.
With poverty, and with a kingdom, letting the self fall into whatever stream of events comes; with the flower of all these various doings, one should worship the pure self.
With a friendliness that reaches into the hearts of good people, deep-rooted, cool like the moon, and sweet by nature, one should worship the self that dwells in the heart.
ākasmikopayātena sthitenaaniyatena ca | bhogābhogaikebogen prāptenātmānamarcayet || 41 ||
With what arrives suddenly, with what stays fixed, and with what is uncertain; with the single experience that holds both pleasure and its absence, just as it comes, one should worship the self.
Of pleasures allowed and pleasures forbidden, always, whether by giving them up or by pursuing them with passion, one should worship one's own pure self.
With everything one wants and everything one does not want, with a mind that is sometimes right and sometimes wrong, with wealth given away and wealth received - one should worship the lord of all things.
One should let go of each thing that is lost, and take up each thing that is gained. Doing this without letting it change you is the highest worship of the self.
Always, in every sight, whether it is liked or disliked, one should hold on to the highest evenness of mind, and follow this vow of forever worshipping the self.
One should find everything as good. One should know the good and the bad as the same thing. One should turn everything into the self, and follow this vow of forever worshipping the self.
Whatever seems pleasant at first sight, and whatever seems very hard to bear at first sight - knowing all of it as truly the same, one should follow this vow of forever worshipping the self.
One should give up dividing things into this is me and this is not me. Knowing for certain that everything is Brahman, one should follow this vow of forever worshipping the self.
na vāñchata na tyajatā daivaprāptāḥ svabhāvataḥ | saritaḥ sāgareṇeva bhoktavyā bhogabhūmayaḥ || 51 ||
Neither wishing for them nor pushing them away, one should live through the fields of experience that come naturally, by fate, just as the ocean takes in the rivers.
Whatever good or bad comes to a person through the meeting of place, time, and action - by taking hold of it without letting it change you, one should worship the self with that very thing.
The many kinds of offerings spoken of for this method of worshipping the self are, in truth, all steeped in one and the same flavour: evenness of mind.
Evenness of mind is sweet and full of flavour; the power of its taste is beyond the senses. Whatever thought it touches turns into nectar in an instant.
One should become full, like the full moon, with an even and steady glow, clear, a single dense mass of consciousness, which, though it is the knower, seems as still as a crystal.
Clear within, like open space, yet outwardly carrying on his ordinary actions, and free from the fog of attachment, the complete knower is the true worshipper.
When the cloud of ignorance has completely worn away, and the mist of ego and its kin has grown still, leaving no mark even on the heart in dreams, the knower shines like the clear autumn sky.
somārkamastamitamānasamātṛmeyaṃ sadyaḥprasūtaśiśuvedanavadvitānam | paśyanpraśāntamaticetanacittabījaṃ jīvannanuttamapadasthita eva tiṣṭha || 62 ||
See the calm seed of the mind, awake beyond the senses, in which the mind, the knower and the known have set like the sun and moon going down, and which spreads out like the bare feeling of a newborn child. While still alive, remain fixed in that highest state alone.
With the passing pleasures and pains of all things, rising in their turn through place, time and means, forever worship the lord of the body, and remain with a mind whose every craving has grown still.
