16.32.1

īśvara uvāca | mune śṛṇu kathaṃ kāryakāriṇī spandaśālinī | carantī ca tanuṃ puṃsāmupaiti paramābhidhām || 1 ||

Ishvara said: Listen, sage, how this power, which does its work and is filled with vibration, moving through the bodies of men, comes to bear the highest name.

prāktanais tair nihantyeva svamanomananehitaiḥ | karmavrātair vicitrehaiḥ paripīvaratāṃ gataiḥ || 2 ||

By those past workings of its own mind's thinking, and by heaps of actions of many kinds grown dense, it truly drives the body on.

manastayā gatā śaktiḥ sajjadevāgatā citeḥ | sā sphuraty anayā brahmann ucitā śaktibhūtayā || 3 ||

The power of consciousness turns into mind and seems to become dull. That same power, Brahmin, then shines out fittingly, having become this active power.

asyāḥ prasādād iha sā citkalaṅkavatī mune | jagadgandharvanagaraṃ karoti na karoti ca || 4 ||

Through the grace of this power, that tainted consciousness, sage, both makes the world into a city in the sky, and does not make it.

cittādyasattayā deho mūkastiṣṭhati kuḍyavat | tatsattayā hi sphurati nabhaḥsaṃpreritāśmavat || 5 ||

Without mind, the body stands mute like a wall. With mind present, the body moves, like a stone hurled through the sky.

sarvasthayātmaśaktyaiva jīva eṣa sphuraty alam | mukuro bimbamādatte dravyātmanyasthitādapi || 7 ||

By the power of the Self alone, present in everything, this jiva truly shines forth, just as a mirror catches an image, even though the object itself is not there inside the mirror.

pravismṛtasvabhāvatvājjīvo'yaṃ jaḍatāṃ gataḥ | mohādvismṛtabhāvatvācchūdratāmiva saddvijaḥ || 8 ||

Because it has forgotten its own nature completely, this jiva has fallen into dullness, like a true Brahmin who, through delusion, forgets his own nature and falls into the state of a Shudra.

pravismṛtasvabhāvā hi ciccittatvamupāgatā | mohāpahatacittatvātsumahāniva dīnatām || 9 ||

Consciousness, having completely forgotten its own nature, comes to be mind, its awareness overwhelmed by delusion, like a truly great man fallen into misery.

jaḍayā'vaśayā deho vātaśaktisamānayā | saṃcālyate tadanayā vārīva vīcimālayā || 10 ||

By that dull, uncontrolled mind, like the power of wind, the body is driven along, just as water is stirred by a line of waves.

karmātmanā varākeṇa jīvena manasāmunā | cālyante dehayantrāṇi pāṣāṇā iva vāyunā || 11 ||

By this poor jiva, whose nature is action, along with its mind, the machinery of the body is driven, like stones driven by the wind.

śarīraśakaṭānāṃ hi karṣaṇe paramātmanāmanaḥprāṇodayau brahmankṛtau karmakṛtau dṛḍhau || 12 ||

It is by these two firm powers that the cart of the body is pulled: the mind, which comes from Brahman, and the life-breath, which comes from karma.

cijjaḍaṃ tūrarīkṛtya rūpaṃ jīvatvametya camanorathamupāruhya vahatprāṇaturaṃgamam || 13 ||

Consciousness takes on the form of dull matter, becomes a jiva, and mounts the chariot of the mind, a chariot drawn by the horses that are the moving breaths of life.

kvacijjātapadārthatvaṃ kvacinnaṣṭapadārthatāmkvacidvahupadārthatvaṃ kvacidekapadārthatām || 14 ||

Sometimes it takes the state of a thing that has come into being, and sometimes the state of a thing destroyed. Sometimes it takes the state of being many things, and sometimes the state of being just one thing.

gateva bhinnevāstyevamatyajantī nijaṃ padamjalateva taraṅgatvaṃ saivāsadasadoditā || 15 ||

It seems to have gone away, seems to have become different, and yet it exists just as it is, never leaving its own true place, like the wave that belongs to water. That very thing has arisen as neither real nor unreal.

upajīvyātmano rūpaṃ paraṃ sphurati vṛttiṣuālokamupajīvyemaṃ rūpaśrīrdṛśyagā yathā || 16 ||

Resting on the Self's own highest form, it shines out within the mind's changing states, just as, resting on light, the beauty of a shape becomes visible.

paramātmani cittatve sthite sati nirāmaye | jīvo jīvati sālokaṃ dīpe sati gṛhaṃ yathā || 17 ||

When consciousness rests firmly in the Supreme Self, untouched by any illness, the jiva lives on, filled with light, just as a house has light when a lamp is burning in it.

ādhayo vyādhayaścaiva prayāntyasya prapīnatām | apāmiva taraṅgatvaṃ vīcitvasyaiva phenatā || 18 ||

Worries of the mind and sicknesses of the body grow thick upon the jiva, just as the wave belongs to the water, and foam belongs to the wave.

ādhivyādhibhirākīrṇaśarīrāmbhojaṣaṭpadaḥ | jīvo vaiṣamyamāyāti taraṅgatve yathā payaḥ || 19 ||

The jiva, the bee upon the lotus of the body now covered with worries and sicknesses, falls into disorder, just as water does when it turns into a wave.

cicchaktiḥ sarvaśaktitvānnāhaṃ ciditi bhāvanāt | atra saivaiti vaivaśyaṃ sūryo dīptairivāmbudaiḥ || 20 ||

Consciousness-power, though it holds all power, falls here into helplessness through the thought "I am not consciousness," like the sun losing its light behind bright clouds.

vaivaśyāccayavatī mauḍhyānna vindatyātmasaṃvidam | ghanajāḍyaparābhūtaḥ svāṅgāvadalanaṃ yathā || 21 ||

Falling away through this helplessness, and overcome by thick inertia, it does not find awareness of itself, lost in delusion, just as one is overwhelmed by the tearing of one's own limb.

prāpya cāpyanusaṃdhānamasyā moho vinaśyati | ghanamoharato jantuḥ svakāryasmaraṇaṃ yathā || 22 ||

And when awareness of this power returns, delusion is destroyed, just as a creature lost deep in confusion comes out of it the moment it remembers its own task.

yadāṅgasamvidāṃ vātaspandaśaktiḥ pramoṣataḥ | na karotyanusaṃdhānaṃ kuṣṭhī spandaiṣaṇaṃ yathā || 23 ||

When the vibrating power of the breath is stolen from the awareness of the limbs, no reconnection happens, just as a leper cannot recover feeling in a numbed limb.

asaṃvitspandato dehe padmapatraṃ hṛdi sthitaṃ | na sphuratypaparāmṛṣṭaṃ dārupātraṃ yathā bahiḥ || 24 ||

When the vibration in the body loses awareness, the lotus of the heart, left untouched, no longer stirs, like a wooden bowl sitting outside, untouched.

niḥspande padmapatre'ntaḥ prāṇāḥ śāntiṃ prayāntyamī | tālavṛnte yathā'spande bahiḥ pavanaśaktayaḥ || 25 ||

When the lotus of the heart within grows still, the breaths of life come to rest, just as, when a palm-leaf fan stops moving, the breeze outside it dies down.

prāṇe śāntetarasparśe jīvo niṣpūrṇamūkatāṃ | yāti śānte nabhovāyau na dṛśyatvaṃ yathā rajaḥ || 26 ||

When the breath grows fully still, touching nothing else, the jiva sinks into a complete and silent stillness, just as dust can no longer be seen when the wind in the sky falls still.

virajaṃ vigatādhāraṃ mano hi śiṣyate mune | tiṣṭhatyātmapadaṃ labdhvā jalāditarubījavat || 27 ||

The mind, free of all impurity and without any support left, simply remains, sage. It rests, having reached its own true place, like a tree's seed sitting in water.

iti vaikalyamāyātaiḥ kāraṇaughaiḥ samantataḥ | puryaṣṭake śamaṃ yāte dehaḥ patati niścalaḥ || 28 ||

Thus, when all the causes, on every side, break down, and the city of eight comes to rest, the body falls, motionless.

cicchetyacetanānmohātspandamāyānti vāsanāḥ | tadīritā smaratyantaranyadvismarati svayam || 29 ||

Out of confusion, taking the lifeless body for consciousness, the old desires begin to stir. Pushed by that, the mind remembers one thing inside itself, and forgets everything else on its own.

hṛtpadmapatrasphuraṇātsphuṭaṃ puryaṣṭakaṃ bhavet | hṛtpadmayantre vahanādruddhe puryaṣṭakaṃ kṣayi || 30 ||

When the petals of the heart's lotus throb, the city of eight stands out clearly. When the flow in the heart-lotus's mechanism is blocked, the city of eight wastes away.

dehe puryaṣṭakaṃ yāvadasti tāvatsa jīvati | śānte puryaṣṭake deho mṛta ityucyate dvija || 31 ||

As long as the city of eight remains in the body, he lives. When the city of eight grows still, the body is called dead, O Brahmin.

viruddhamalasambodhācchhedabhedadaśāvaśāt na prasphurati hṛtpadmayantramabhyantare yadā || 32 ||

When, because awareness is blocked by impurity, and in a state of being cut and torn apart, the mechanism of the heart's lotus no longer stirs within,

tadā puryaṣṭakaṃ śāntimupaiti gagane śanaiḥ saṃrodhite vātayantre yathā pavanasantatiḥ || 33 ||

then the city of eight settles slowly into space, the way the flow of air fades when a bellows is blocked.

svasaṃvittivāśājjīvo vaivaśyamupagacchati padmayantraṃ śarīrasthaṃ pravāhaṃ yāti nityadā || 34 ||

Bound by its own awareness, the living being falls under that power. The lotus-mechanism seated in the body keeps flowing on, always.

vāsanā vimalā yeṣāṃ hṛdayānnāpasarpati sthirairkarūpajīvāste jīvanmuktāścirāyuṣaḥ || 35 ||

Those from whose heart pure desire does not slip away, whose inner self remains steady, always the same, are free while they live, and live long.

saṃrudhde padmayantre hi prāṇe śāntimupāgate dehaḥ patatyadhairyo'yaṃ kāṣṭhaloṣṭasamaḥ kṣitau || 36 ||

When the lotus-mechanism is blocked and the breath grows still, this body falls helpless to the ground, no different from a log or a clod of earth.

yathaiva vyoma maruti līnaṃ puryaṣṭakaṃ bhavet | tathaiva tatraiva tadā layameti mano mune || 37 ||

Just as the city of eight dissolves into the wind of the sky, so too, right there, the mind then reaches its own dissolution, O sage.

sucirābhyastabhāvaṃ tu vāsanākhacitaṃ manaḥ | yatra tatra bhramatsvarganarakādi prapaśyati || 38 ||

But the mind, long shaped by habit and inlaid with desire, wanders here and there and sees heaven, hell, and everything of that kind.

śarīraṃ śavatāmeti manomārutavarjitam | gate gṛhajane dūraṃ gṛhaṃ saṃśūnyatāmiva || 39 ||

The body, left without mind or breath, becomes a corpse, the way a house turns completely empty when the family living there has gone far away.

sarvagā cicchetanato jīvībhūya manaḥsthitā | puryaṣṭakavapurbhūtvā sā''tivāhikadehinī || 40 ||

Consciousness, which is present everywhere, becomes a living being through its own power of awareness. It settles into the mind, takes on the shape of the city of eight, and becomes the one who carries a body that travels on.

tanmātrapañcakaṃ cittaṃ kroḍīkṛtya vyavasthitā | svapnabhramavadākāraṃ bhāvātsthūlaṃ prapaśyati || 41 ||

Holding the five subtle elements and the mind together within itself, it stays settled there. Then, the way a dream creates a confused shape, it sees a solid form simply out of its own imagining.

dṛḍhabhāvanayā paścāttatraiva rasashālinī | ātivāhikadehatvaṃ vismaratyakhilaṃ kṣaṇāt || 42 ||

Then, through this firm imagining, taking delight in that very place, it forgets completely, in an instant, that it ever was the body that travels on.

asatyeva śarīre'smin kṛtakṛtrimabhāvanā | nayatyasatyaṃ satyatvaṃ satyaṃ cāsatyatāmapi || 43 ||

Though this body is not real at all, a belief that has been artificially built up turns the unreal into something taken as real, and turns the real into something taken as unreal.

sarvagā hi cidaṃśena jīvībhūyābhavanmanaḥ | manaḥ puryaṣṭakarathamākrāmati tato jagat || 44 ||

Consciousness, though present everywhere, becomes a living being through a fragment of itself, and turns into mind. That mind then climbs into the chariot of the city of eight, and rides it out into the world.

puryaṣṭakaṃ vātamayaṃ dehamutthāpayatyalaṃ | hṛtspandivetāla iva jīvatītyucyate tadā || 45 ||

The city of eight, made of wind, is enough by itself to make the body rise up. Throbbing at the heart, like a spirit stirring a corpse, it is then said to 'be alive.'

kṣīṇe puryaṣṭake cittaṃ yadā vyomani līyate | tadā sphurati deho'yaṃ mṛta ityucyate'pi ca || 46 ||

When the city of eight is worn out, and the mind dissolves into space, then this body shows itself as it is, and is called dead too.

svabhāvavaśato jīvo vismṛtyā śaktimṛcchati | vaivaśyātkālavavaśataḥ parṇaṃ jarjaratāmiva || 47 ||

Ruled by its own nature, the living being, through forgetting itself, falls under a compelling power. Helpless, ruled by time, it withers like a leaf turning brittle.

jīvaśaktyā parāmṛṣṭe niruddhe padmayantrake | prāṇe saṃrodhamāyāte mriyate mānavo mune || 48 ||

When the power of the living being grips the lotus-mechanism and blocks it, and the breath comes to a stop, the man dies, O sage.

yathā jātāni jātāni cānyānyanyāni kālataḥ | vṛkṣātparṇāni śīryante śarīrāṇi tathā nṛṇām || 49 ||

Just as leaves are born on a tree one after another, each new one different, and in time they fall from it, so it is with the bodies of men.

jāyante ca mriyante ca śarīrāṇi śarīriṇām | pādapānāṃ ca parṇāni kā tatra paridevanā || 50 ||

The bodies of living beings are born and die, just as the leaves of trees are born and die. What is there in that to grieve over?

cidambudhau sphurantyetā dehabudbudapaṅkatayaḥ | itaścānyā itaścānyā etāsvāsthā na dhīmataḥ || 51 ||

In the ocean of consciousness these rows of bodies flash up like bubbles, one after another, again and again from every side. A wise man has no attachment to them.

sarvagāpi cidetasmiṃścetasi pratibimbiti | padārthamantarādatte nānyo hi mukurādṛte || 52 ||

Consciousness, though it is everywhere, is reflected in this mind. Nothing but a mirror can take an object inside itself like that.

cidamalanabhasi prayatnarūpāḥ parivitatte tadatanmayāḥ sphuranti | kalakalamukharāḥ sphuṭābhirāmā vividhaśarīravimohatāpanāya || 53 ||

In the stainless sky of consciousness, spread out everywhere, forms that look like striving beings flash into view, though they are not truly made of it. Loud with noise, bright and pleasing, they exist only to confuse and torment these various bodies.
