16.25.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | itthaṃ sa kathayanpakṣī pṛṣṭastatra punarmayā | kīdṛśī prāṇavātasya gatirityeva rāghava || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: While the bird was saying all this, I asked him again there, Rama: what is the movement of the breath of life?

bhūśuṇḍa uvāca | jānannapi mune sarva kiṃ māṃ pṛcchasi līlayā | yathāpṛṣṭamahaṃ vacmi śṛṇu tatrāpi madvacaḥ || 2 ||

Bhushunda said: Sage, you already know everything; why do you ask me only in play? I will tell you just as you asked; hear my words on this too.

prāṇo'yamaniśaṃ brahman spandaśaktiḥ sadāgatiḥ | sabāhyābhyantare dehe prāṇo'yamupari sthitaḥ || 3 ||

This up-breath never stops, O Brahmin; it is the power that vibrates, always moving. In the body, outside and inside together, this up-breath stays in the upper part.

apāno'pyaniśaṃ brahman spandaśaktiḥ sadāgatiḥ | sabāhyābhyantare dehe tvapāno'yamavāksthitaḥ || 4 ||

This down-breath too never stops, O Brahmin; it is the power that vibrates, always moving. In the body, outside and inside together, this down-breath stays in the lower part.

jāgrataḥ svapataścaiva prāṇāyāmo'yamuttamaḥ | pravartate yatastajjña tattāvacchreyase śṛṇu || 5 ||

For one who is awake, and for one who is asleep, this control of the breath is the highest kind. Listen to how it works, you who understand such things; listen well, for it is for your own good.

bāhyonmukhatvaṃ prāṇānāṃ yaddhṛdambujakoṭarāt svarasenāstayatnānāṃ taṃ dhīrā recakaṃ viduḥ || 6 ||

When the breath turns to face outward, moving on its own from the hollow of the heart-lotus, without any effort, the wise call that the out-breath.

dvādaśāṅgulaparyantaṃ bāhyamākramatām adhaḥ prāṇānāmaṅgasansparśo yaḥ sa pūraka ucyate || 7 ||

The breath moves downward and covers the space outside, up to twelve finger-widths away, then touches the body; that touch is called the in-breath.

bāhyātparāpatatyantarapāne yatnavarjitaḥ yo'yaṃ prapūraṇaḥ sparśo vidustamapi pūrakam || 8 ||

And the breath that falls from outside into the down-breath within, without any effort, that filling touch too is called the in-breath.

apāne'stamgate prāṇo yāvannābhyudito hṛdi tāvatsā kumbhakāvasthā yogibhiryānubhūyate || 9 ||

When the down-breath has gone down and settled, and the up-breath has not yet risen again in the heart, for that time, the state that yogis feel is called the held breath.

recakaḥ kumbhakaścaiva pūrakaśca tridhā sthitaḥ apānasyaodayasthāne dvādaśāntādadho bahiḥ || 10 ||

The out-breath, the held breath, and the in-breath all exist as three, at the place where the down-breath rises, below the point that is twelve finger-widths away, out in the open.

svabhāvāḥ sarvakālasthāḥ samyagyatnavivarjitāḥ | ye proktāḥ sphāramatibhistāñchṛṇu tvaṃ mahāmate || 11 ||

Now hear about the natural workings of the breath that stay the same at all times, entirely free of effort, as they have been told by people of great understanding; listen to them, wise one.

dvādaśāṅgulaparyantādbāhyādabhyuditaḥ prabho | yo vātastasya tatraiva svabhāvātpūrakādayaḥ || 12 ||

My lord, the breath that rises from that outer point twelve finger-widths away, for this breath, right there, the in-breath and the rest happen entirely on their own.

136.25.13

hṛdantarasthāniṣpannaghaṭavadyā sthitirbahiḥ | dvādaśāṅgulaparyante nāsāgrasamasammukhe || 13 ||

From inside the heart, the breath takes a settled shape, like a pot fully formed, and rests outside at the point twelve finger-widths away, level with and facing the tip of the nose.

vyomni nityamapānasya taṃ viduḥ kumbhakaṃ budhāḥ | bāhyonmukhasya vāyoryā nāsikāgrāvadhirgatiḥ || 14 ||

In that space, the wise call the down-breath's constant, steady state the held breath. The breath that turns outward moves only as far as the tip of the nose.

taṃ bāhyapūrakaṃ tvādyaṃ viduryogavidō janāḥ | nāsāgrādapi nirgatya dvādaśāntāvadhirgatiḥ || 15 ||

People who know this practice call that movement, up to the tip of the nose, the first outer in-breath. From the tip of the nose it goes out further, moving on to the point twelve finger-widths away.

yā vāyostaṁ vidurdhīrā aparaṁ bāhyapūrakam | vahirastaṁgate prāṇe yāvanna apāna udgataḥ || 16 ||

The wise call that movement of the breath, reaching the point twelve finger-widths away, the second outer in-breath. Once the breath has gone out and settled outside, there is a time before the down-breath rises again.

tāvatpūrṇam samāvastham bahiṣṭham kumbhakam viduḥ | yattadantarmukhatvam syādapānasyodayam vinā || 17 ||

For as long as that lasts, the full and evenly settled state that stays outside is called the held breath. There is also a turning inward that can happen even before the down-breath has risen.

tam bāhyarecakam vidyāccintyamānam vimuktidam | dvādaśāntādyadutthāya rūpapīvaratā parā || 18 ||

That inward turning, when watched closely, is known as the outer out-breath, and it brings freedom. Something else rises from the point twelve finger-widths away and swells into its fullest form.

apānasyabahiṣṭham tamaparam pūrakam viduḥ | bāhyānābhatantarāmścaitānkumbhakādīnanāratam || 19 ||

This, the outer form of the down-breath, is known as the other in-breath. These, the outer and the inner, the held breath and the rest, go on without pause.

prāṇāpānasvabhāvāmstamabuddhvā bhūyo na jāyate | aṣṭāvete mahābuddhe rātridivamanusmṛtāḥ || 20 ||

One who understands these natural workings of the up-breath and the down-breath is not born again. Great one, these are the eight, to be kept in mind night and day.

svabhāvā dehavāyūnāṃ kathitā muktidā mayā | gacchatastiṣṭhato vāpi jāgrataḥ svapato'pi vā || 21 ||

I have told you the natural workings of the body's breath, which lead to freedom, whether one is walking or standing still, awake or even asleep.

ete nirodhamāyānti prakṛtyā'ticalānilāḥ | yatkaroti yadaśnāti buddhyai'valamanusmaran || 22 ||

These breaths, restless by nature, come to rest and stillness in someone who keeps in mind, with full attention, whatever he does and whatever he eats.

kumbhakādīnnaraḥ svāntastatra kartā na kiṃcana | avyagramasminvyāpāre bāhyaṃ parijahanmanaḥ || 23 ||

In holding the breath and all the rest of it, a person does nothing at all by his own will; his mind stays undisturbed in this working, and it lets go of everything outside.

dinaiḥ katipayaireva padamāpnoti kevalam | etadabhyasataḥ puṃso bāhye viṣayavṛttiṣu || 24 ||

In just a few days he reaches that one pure state; this happens to a person who practises this, even while his outer life still runs after the things the senses want.

na baghnāti ratiṃ cetaḥ svadṛtau brāhmaṇo yathā | etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya ye sthitāḥ kṛtabuddhayaḥ || 25 ||

His mind forms no attachment there, just as a Brahmin takes no pleasure in a dog's skin. Those who hold to this insight and stay firm in it have made their understanding complete.

prāptaprāptavyamakhilaṃ tairakhinnaasta eva hi | tiṣṭhatā gacchatā nityaṃ svapatā jāgratā tathā || 26 ||

Without ever growing tired, these very people gain everything there is to gain, whether they are standing, walking, sleeping, or awake.

eṣā cetprekṣyate dṛṣṭistann na bandhanamāpyate | prāṇāpānānusaraṇaprāptabodhavatāmalam || 27 ||

If a person holds on to this way of seeing, he does not fall into bondage. This much is enough for those who have gained understanding by following the path of the out-breath and the in-breath.

saṃśāntamalamohēna svasthēnāntarihōṣyatē | sarvārambhānsadā svacchaḥ kurvanvāpi budhō janaḥ || 28 ||

The wise person, whose impurity and delusion have been quieted, rests steady within himself and dwells inwardly, right here, staying clear at all times, even while carrying out every task.

prāṇāpānagatiṃ prāpya susvasthaḥ sukhamēdhatē | prāṇasyābhyudayō brahmanpadmapatrāddhṛdi sthitāt || 29 ||

Once a person has grasped the movement of the out-breath and the in-breath, he becomes steady and lives happily. The out-breath rises, O Brahmin, from the lotus petal that sits in the heart.

dvādaśāṅgulaparyantē prāṇō'staṃ yātyayaṃ bahiḥ | apānasyaudayō bāhyāddvādaśāntānmahāmunē || 30 ||

This out-breath travels outward and comes to rest at a distance of twelve finger-widths. The in-breath then rises from outside, from that point twelve finger-widths away, great sage.

astaṃgatirathāmbhojamadhye hṛdayasaṃsthite | prāṇo yatra samāyāti dvādaśānte nabhaḥpade || 31 ||

Then it comes to rest in the middle of the lotus that sits in the heart, at that space twelve finger-widths within, where the breath arrives.

padāttasmādapāno'yaṃ khādeti samanantaram | bāhyākāśonmukhaḥ prāṇo vahatyagniśikhā yathā || 32 ||

From that point, this in-breath then moves on at once. The out-breath, turning toward the outer space, flows on like the flame of a fire.

hṛdākāśonmukho'pāno nimne vahati vārivat | apānaścandramā dehamāpyāyayati bāhyataḥ || 33 ||

The in-breath, turning toward the space in the heart, flows downward like water. The in-breath is the moon; it refreshes the body from outside.

prāṇaḥ sūryo'gnirathavā pacatyantaridaṃ vapuḥ | prāṇo hi hṛdayākāśaṃ tāpayitvā pratikṣaṇam || 34 ||

The out-breath is the sun, or rather fire; it cooks this body from within. It is the out-breath that heats the space of the heart, moment after moment,

mukhāgragaganaṃ paścāttāpayatyuttamo raviḥ | apānendurmakhāgraṃ tu plāvayitvā hṛdambaram || 35 ||

and afterward, being the supreme sun, it heats the space at the tip of the mouth too. The moon, the in-breath, then drenches the space at the tip of the mouth, and reaches on to the space of the heart,

paścādāpyāyayatyēṣa nimēṣasamanantaram | apānaśaśinō'ntasthā kalā prāṇavivasvatā || 36 ||

and right after, moment by moment, it nourishes that same heart-space. The inner sliver of the moon that is the in-breath is then reached by the sun that is the out-breath,

yatra grastā tadāsādya padaṃ bhūyo na śocyate | prāṇārkasya tathāntasthā yatrāpānasitāṃśunā || 37 ||

and once it is swallowed there, a person who reaches that state grieves no more. In the same way, the inner sliver of the sun that is the out-breath is reached by the white-rayed moon that is the in-breath,

grastā tatpadamāsādya na bhūyo janmabhāṅnaraḥ | prāṇa evārkatāṃ yāti sabāhyābhyantare'mbare || 38 ||

and once it is swallowed, a person who reaches that state is not born again. The out-breath itself then becomes the sun, in the space both outside and inside.

āpyāyanakarīṃ paścācchaśitāmadhitiṣṭhati | prāṇa evendutāṃ tyaktvā śarīrāpyāyakāriṇīm || 39 ||

Afterward, the out-breath takes on the moon's nature, the one that brings nourishment. Having given up being the sun, it is the out-breath itself that now takes up that moon-nature which restores the body.

kṣaṇādāyāti sūryatvaṃ saṃśoṣaṇakaraṃ padam | arkatāṃ saṃparityajya na yāvaccandratāṃ gataḥ || 40 ||

It does not reach, in an instant, the parching state of the sun until it has completely given up being the sun and has first turned into the moon.

prāṇastāvadvicāryante'deśakāle na śocyate | hṛdi candrārkayorjñātvā nityamastamayodayam || 41 ||

So long as a person keeps watching the two breaths closely, he does not grieve out of place or out of time, once he has come to know, within his own heart, the endless rising and setting of the moon and the sun.

ānmano nijamādhāraṃ na bhūyo jāyate manaḥ | sodayāstamayaṃ senduṃ saraśmiṃ sagamāgamam || 42 ||

and once he has come to know his own true foundation, the self, his mind is never born again, that same mind which used to have its rising and its setting, its own moon, its own rays, its own coming and going.

He who sees the sun god within his own heart is the one who truly sees. Outward darkness, whether it has faded away or not, does not help reach that attainment.

hārdaṃ tu kṣapayeddhvāntaṃ yatkṣaye siddhiruttamā | bāhye tamasi saṃkṣīṇo lokālokaḥ prajāyate || 44 ||

It is the darkness inside the heart that must be destroyed, destroying that brings the highest attainment. When only the darkness outside fades away, all a person gets is the ordinary sight of the world.

hārde tu tamasi kṣīṇe svālokaḥ jāyate mune | hārdāndhakārakṣayadaṃ parijñātaṃ vimuktidam || 45 ||

But when the darkness inside the heart is destroyed, sage, a light of one's own arises. Once a person has fully understood this, the destroying of the heart's darkness, it grants him freedom.

sodayāstamayaṃ yatnātprāṇārkamavalokayet | apānenduḥ prayātyastaṃ yatra hṛtpadmakoṭare || 46 ||

A person should watch closely the out-breath, the sun, along with its rising and setting, and see where the in-breath, the moon, comes to rest, in the hollow of the lotus in the heart.

padāttasmādudetyantaḥ prāṇārko bahirunmukhaḥ | apāne'stamgate prāṇaḥ samudeti hṛdambujāt || 47 ||

From that point, the out-breath, the sun, rises up within, turning toward the outside. Once the in-breath has come to rest, the out-breath rises up again from the lotus of the heart.

chāyāyāṃ galitāṅgāyāṃ tatraivāśu yathātapaḥ | prāṇe tvastaṃgate bāhyādapānaḥ proditaḥ kṣaṇāt || 48 ||

Just as sunlight appears the instant shade fades away, so too, the instant the out-breath comes to rest, the in-breath rises up at once from outside.

ātape parito naṣṭe chāyevānupadaṃ tathā | prāṇajanmāvanau naṣṭamapānaṃ viddhi sanmate || 49 ||

Just as shade follows right on the heels of sunlight the moment it has fully vanished, know this too, wise one: the in-breath is absent from the very ground where the out-breath is born.

apānajanmabhūmau ca prāṇaṃ naṣṭamavehi hi | astaṃgatavati prāṇe tvapāne'bhyudayonmukhe || 50 ||

And know for certain, too, that the out-breath is absent from the ground where the in-breath is born, once the out-breath has come to rest and the in-breath is about to rise.

bahiḥ kumbhakamālambya ciraṃ bhūyo na śocyate | apāne'staṃgate prāṇe kiṃcidabhyudayonmukhe || 51 ||

By holding on to breath-holding outside the body for a long time, a person no longer grieves, once apana has set and prana is only just beginning to rise.

antaḥkumbhakamālambya ciraṃ bhūyo na śocyate | prāṇarecakamālambya apānāddūrakoṭigam || 52 ||

By holding on to breath-holding inside the body for a long time, one grieves no more, releasing prana all the way out to its farthest point from apana.

svacchaṃ kumbhakamabhyasyya na bhūyaḥ paritapyate | apāne recakādhāraṃ prāṇapūrāntarāsthitam || 53 ||

By practicing pure breath-holding, one is troubled no more: apana is the base behind the out-breath, resting within the current where prana flows in.

svasaṃsthaṃ pūrakaṃ dṛṣṭvā na bhūyo jāyate naraḥ | prāṇāpānāvubhāvantaryatraitau vilayaṃ gatau || 54 ||

Seeing the in-breath settled in its own natural place, a person is not born again; that is the place within where both prana and apana dissolve.

tadālambya padaṃ śāntamātmānaṃ nānutapyate | prāṇabhakṣonmukhe'pāne deśaṃ kālaṃ ca niṣkalam || 55 ||

Relying on that peaceful state, the self grieves no more; when apana is about to consume prana, space and time become undivided.

vicārya bahirantarvā na bhūyaḥ pariśocyate | apānabhakṣaṇapare prāṇe hṛdi tathā bahiḥ || 56 ||

Having looked closely at this, whether outside or within, one grieves no more, when prana is about to consume apana, in the heart as much as outside.

deśaṃ kālaṃ ca saṃprekṣya na bhūyo jāyate manaḥ | yatra prāṇo hyapānena prāṇenāpāna eva ca || 57 ||

Having seen the place and the moment where prana becomes one with apana, and apana itself becomes one with prana, the mind is not born again.

nigīrṇau bahirantaśca deśakālau ca paśya tau | kṣaṇamastagataprāṇamapānodayavarjitam || 58 ||

See how space and time are swallowed up, both outside and within, in that moment when prana has set and apana does not rise at all.

ayatnasiddhabāhyasthaṃ kumbhakaṃ tatpadaṃ viduḥ | ayatnasiddho hyantasthakumbhakaḥ paramaṃ padam || 59 ||

The wise know effortless breath-holding outside the body as that state; effortless breath-holding within the body is indeed the highest state.

etattadātmano rūpaṃ śuddhaiṣā paramaiva cit | etattattatsadābhāsametatprāpya na śocyate || 60 ||

This is that very form of the self; this alone is pure, supreme awareness. This is that ever-present light; attaining this, one grieves no more.

puṣpasyaantarivāmodaḥ prāṇasyāntaravasthitam | na sa prāṇaṃ na vā'pānaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe || 61 ||

Like the fragrance held within a flower, it stays within prana; it is neither prana nor apana. We meditate on that self which is pure awareness.

jalasyāntarivāsvādamapānasyaantarasthitam | na saprāṇaṃ na vā'prāṇaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe || 62 ||

Like taste hidden within water, it stays within apana; it is neither joined to prana nor free of prana. We meditate on that self which is pure awareness.

636.25.63

prāṇakṣayasyopāntasthamapānakṣayakoṭigam | apānaprāṇayormadhyaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe || 63 ||

It stands at the edge where prana ends, it reaches the farthest point where apana ends, it is the exact mid-point between apana and prana; we meditate on that self which is pure awareness.

prāṇasya prāṇanaṃ proccaiḥ paraṃ jīvasya jīvanam | dehasya dhāraṇaṃ dhuryaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe || 64 ||

It is, above all, what breathes life into the breath itself, the life within life, the chief support that holds up the body; we meditate on that self which is pure awareness.

manaso mananaṃ satyaṃ buddherekāvabodhanam | ahaṃkṛterahaṃkāraṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe || 65 ||

It is the true thought behind the mind's thinking, the one understanding behind the intellect, the very sense of I behind the feeling of I; we meditate on that self which is pure awareness.

666.25.66

In it is everything, from it comes everything, it is everything, it is everywhere, and it is the ever-existing one in which everything rests; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

ālokālokanaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvapāvanapāvanam na ca bhāvanamanūnaṃ taccittattvamupāsmahe || 67 ||

It is the light that lets all seeing happen, it is sacred, the purifier of every purifying thing, a fullness that lacks nothing; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

Where apana has set and prana has not risen even for a moment, free from the least stain of division, we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness. Where apana has not risen and prana has come to its end, that whirling space at the tip of the nose, we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

696.25.69

Where prana goes to its setting, and apana too goes to its setting, where both together are unborn; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

In the place where prana and apana arise, resting both outside and within, these two are the very foundation of the yogi's state; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

Mounted on the chariot of prana and apana, yet not bound by prana and apana, the very power behind all powers; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

726.25.72

The shining one who is the holding of prana in the heart, and the holding of apana outside, who is released as a portion of every in-breath; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

The touch that grasps both prana and apana together, the awareness of pure being, without any fixed form, reached through deep attention to the breath; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

It is the very throb of the breath-wind; it is what turns that throb into joy; it is the cause behind all causes; we meditate on that reality which is pure awareness.

I take refuge in that highest, supreme state, free from the stain of all activity, yet always surrounded by its own many powers, a state whose only wealth is one's own direct experience of it, bowed to by all the gods.
