16.114.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | parasmādbrahmaṇaḥ pūrvaṃ manaḥ prathamamutthitam | mananātmakamābhogi tatstham eva sthitiṃ gatam || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: From the Supreme Brahman, the mind first arose, characterized by contemplation, and it remained in that state.

puṣpakośa ivāmodo mahormiriva sāgare | raśmijālamivāditye mano brahmaṇi rāghava || 2 ||

O Raghava, the mind is like the fragrance in a flower bud, like a great wave in the ocean, and like the network of rays in the sun.

tasyādṛśyātmatattvasya vismṛtyaiva gataṃ sthitim | nānyasmādāgataṃ rāma jagadrajjubhujagavat || 3 ||

O Rama, the mind, forgetting its own invisible nature, remains in its state. The world is not different from it, just as a snake is not different from a rope.

ādityavyatirekeṇa yo bhāvayati rāghava | raśmijālamidaṃ hyetattasyānyadiva bhāsvataḥ || 4 ||

O Raghava, one who thinks of the network of rays without the sun, it appears as if it is something different from the luminous sun.

kanakavyatirekeṇa keyūraṃ yena bhāvitam | keyūrameva tattasya na tasya kanakaṃ hi tat || 5 ||

One who thinks of the armlet without gold, for him, the armlet itself is not gold.

When the rays are perceived without the sun, it is called the sun itself without distinction.

salilavyatirekeṇa taraṅgo yena bhāvitaḥ | taraṅgabuddhirevaikā sthitā tasya na vāridhīḥ || 7 ||

When the wave is perceived without the water, the perception is only of the wave, not of the ocean.

salilāvyatirekeṇa taraṅgo yena bhāvyate | ambusāmānyatābuddhirnirvikalpaḥ sa ucyate || 8 ||

When the wave is perceived without the water, the perception is of the general nature of water without distinction.

kanakāvyatirekeṇa keyūraṃ yena bhāvyate | kanakaikamahābuddhirnirvikalpaḥ sa ucyate || 9 ||

When the armlet is perceived without the gold, the perception is of the greatness of gold without distinction.

pāvakavyatirekeṇa jvālālī yena bhāvitā | tasyāgnibuddhirgalati jvālādhīreva tiṣṭhati || 10 ||

When the flame is perceived without the fire, the perception of fire fades away, and only the perception of the flame remains.

jvālājālābhralekheva rañjitā sā tathā sthitiḥ| tāmevāsthāṃ samādatte tadgatānyākulā matiḥ || 11 ||

Just as the sky appears to be colored by the flames of a forest fire, so does the state of the mind become disturbed by the impressions of that state.

pāvakāvyatirekeṇa jvālālī yena bhāvyate| tasyāgnibuddhirekāsti nirvikalpaḥ sa ucyate || 12 ||

Just as a flame is perceived without the presence of fire, so too, there is a single cognition of fire, which is called nirvikalpa.

yo nirvikalpaḥ sumahānso'saṃkṣīṇamahāmatiḥ| prāptavyaṃ tena saṃprāptaṃ nāsau vastuṣu majjati || 13 ||

That which is nirvikalpa is great and of unlimited intelligence. By it, what is to be attained is attained, and it does not become immersed in objects.

nānātāmakhilāṃ tyaktvā śuddhacinmātrakoṭare| saṃvedyena vinirmukte saṃvittattve sthito bhava || 14 ||

Abandoning all diversity, dwell in the pure consciousness, free from the knowable, and established in the essence of consciousness.

svayamevātmanaivātmā śaktiṃ saṃkalpanāmikām| yadā karoti sphuratā spandaśaktimivānilaḥ || 15 ||

When the self, by itself, manifests the power of imagination, it vibrates like the wind.

tadā pṛthagivābhāsaṃ saṃkalpakalanāmayam | mano bhavati viśvātmā bhāvayansvākṛtiṃ svayam || 16 ||

Then, the mind, which is the cause of resolutions and calculations, appears distinctly as the universal self, contemplating its own form by itself.

tatsaṃkalpātmakaṃ ceto yathedamakhilaṃ jagat | saṃkalpayati saṃkalpais tathaiva bhavati kṣaṇāt || 17 ||

That mind, which is the essence of resolutions, just as this entire world, creates through its resolutions, and thus it becomes in an instant.

kīṭatvamabjajatvaṃ ca merutvaṃ marutāṃ tathā | mano jīvamahaṃkārabuddhicitādināmakam || 18 ||

The mind is named as the ego, intellect, and consciousness, which creates the forms of insects, lotuses, mountains, and winds.

saṃkalpato dvitaiakatvametya ceto jagatsthitim | tanoti tasyāṃ tadanu nānātāṃ gacchati svayam || 19 ||

The mind, through its resolutions, attains duality and unity, and establishes the stability of the world. Following that, it diversifies itself.

saṃkalpamayamevedaṃ jagadābhogi dṛśyate | na satyaṃ na ca mithyaiava svapnajālamivotthitam || 20 ||

This world, which is the enjoyer, is seen to be made of resolutions. It is neither true nor false, like a dream-like illusion that has arisen.

jantoryathā manorājyaṃ vividhārambhabhāsuram | brāhmaṃ tathedaṃ vitatam manorājyaṃ virājate || 21 ||

Just as the mind's kingdom of a living being is resplendent with various endeavors, so too does this Brahman's kingdom shine, spread out as the mind's kingdom.

yathābhūtārthabhāvitvāttadetatpravilīyate | paramārtheṇa dṛṣṭaṃ cet tadidaṃ naiva kiṃcana || 22 ||

Due to the nature of reality, this dissolves. If it is seen with the ultimate truth, then this is indeed nothing.

dṛśyaṃ tvaparamārtheṇa prayāti śataśākhatām | jalamūrmitarāṅgādikalanārhaṃ parisphuran || 23 ||

The visible, however, with the non-ultimate truth, goes to a hundred branches. Like water with waves and ripples, it shimmers, worthy of agitation.

yathāmbudhirvapurdhatte svabhāvena tathā citaḥ | kurvankarmasahasrāṇi hyaṇucitsandanādṛte || 24 ||

Just as the ocean holds its form by its nature, so does the conscious being, performing thousands of actions, due to the vibration of the atom.

nāpūrvaṃ kurute kiṃcit kiṃcidbhedamatastyajan | gacchanśrṛṇvan spṛśan jighran vadan vyavaharan svapan || 25 ||

It does not do anything new, abandoning some difference from that. Going, hearing, touching, smelling, speaking, behaving, sleeping.

nāpūrvaṃ vidyate kiṃcit satyamityeva bhāvayan | yadyatkaroṣi tadviddhi cinmātramamalaṃ tatam || 26 ||

There is nothing that is not new, knowing this as the truth | Whatever you do, know that it is pure consciousness, untainted and pervasive

brahma prabṛṃhitākāraṃ tasmādanyanna vidyate | padārthajāte sarvasmin saṃvitsāramaye sthite || 27 ||

Brahman is of an expanded form, nothing else exists besides it | In all objects, it is present as the essence of consciousness

saṃvidevedamakhilaṃ jagannānyāsti kalpanā | saṃvitsphuraṇamātre'smiñjagajjālakanāmani || 28 ||

Consciousness alone is this entire universe, there is no other imagination | In the mere flickering of consciousness, this world is known by various names

idamanyadidaṃ cānyaditi mithyāgrahaḥ kutaḥ | saṃbhavādakhilākāreṣvekasyā eva saṃvidaḥ | saṃvedyamapi nāstyeva bandhamokṣāvataḥ katham || 29 ||

How can there be a false notion that this is different and that is different? | Since consciousness alone exists in all forms, how can there be bondage and liberation?

mokṣo'yameṣa khalu bandha iti prasahya cintāṃ nirasya sakalāṃ viphalaābhimānām | maunī vaśī vigatamānamado mahātmā kurvansvakāryamanahaṃkṛtireva tiṣṭha || 30 ||

This liberation is indeed bondage, forcefully abandon all thoughts of vain pride | Being silent, self-controlled, free from arrogance, the great soul performs his duties without ego
