16.113.1

śrīrāma uvāca | mithyānaraprasaṅgena kiṃ māyāpuruṣaḥ prabho | kathito'yaṃ tvayā vyomarakṣaṇa ca kimucyate || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: O Lord, what is this illusory man described by you through the context of an unreal human? And what is meant by the protection of the sky?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | śṛṇu rāma yathābhūtametatprakaṭayāmi te | mithyāpuruṣavṛttāntakathā yā kathitādhunā || 2 ||

Vasistha said: Listen, O Rama, I will reveal to you the truth as it is. The story of the illusory man that has been narrated now.

māyāyantramayaḥ prokto yaḥ pumānraghunandana | enaṃ tvaṃ tamahaṃkāraṃ viddhi śūnyāmbarotthitam || 3 ||

O Raghunandana, the man described as a product of the illusory machine is this ego, know it to be arisen from the empty sky.

yasminnākāśakośe'smin sādho jagadidaṃ sthitam | tadanantamasacchūnyaṃ sargādau bhavati svayam || 4 ||

O virtuous one, in this sheath of space, this universe is situated. That infinite, unreal void exists by itself at the beginning of creation.

antaḥsthitasudurlakṣyabrahma vyomno'tha śabdavat | tasmādudetyahaṃkāraḥ pūrvaṃ spanda ivānilāt || 5 ||

The subtle and difficult-to-perceive Brahman resides within the space, like sound. From that, the ego arises first, like a vibration from the wind.

vṛddhiṃ yātaḥ sa gagane kalpayatyātmatāṃ gataḥ | anātmātmābhidhānena tenāsau yatate tataḥ || 6 ||

Having grown, he imagines himself to be the sky. By the designation of non-self as self, he strives for that.

anātmātmaikarakṣārthaṃ dehānnānāvidhānasau | bhūyobhūyo vināśe'pi sṛjatyākulatāṃ gataḥ || 7 ||

For the sake of protecting the unity of non-self and self, he creates various bodies. Even in repeated destruction, he creates confusion.

sa eva māyāpuruṣo mithyāpuruṣa eva saḥ | asadevodito vyartho'pyahaṃkāro hi māyayā || 8 ||

He himself is the illusory person, indeed a false person. Born of the unreal, he is useless, yet the ego is indeed due to illusion.

kūpakuṇḍacatuḥśālakumbhādīndehaakānasau | kṛtvā rakṣita ātmeti yāti tadvyomni bhāvanam || 9 ||

Having made various bodies like wells, ponds, halls, and pots, he protects them thinking they are the self and goes into that state of mind.

ahaṃkārasya tasyāsya nāmānīmāni rāghava | śṛṇu yairjagadākāravibhramairmohayatyasau || 10 ||

O Raghava, listen to the names of that ego, by which it deludes the world with various illusions.

jīvo buddhirmanshchittaṃ māyā prakṛtirityapi | saṃkalpaḥ kalanā kālaḥ kalā chetyapi viśrutaiḥ || 11 ||

The individual soul, intellect, mind, thought, illusion, nature, and so forth, are known by various names such as resolve, calculation, time, and art.

evamādyaistathānyaiścha nāmabhirbahutāṃ gataiḥ | sahasrarūpo'haṃkāraḥ kalpitārthairvijṛmbhate || 12 ||

Thus, with these and other numerous names, the ego, which has a thousand forms, manifests itself with imagined meanings.

bhūtākāśe tate śūnye jagannirbhitti niścitam | sukhaduḥkhānyanubhavanmithyaiva puruṣaḥ sthitaḥ || 13 ||

In the empty space of elements, the world is certainly without support, experiencing happiness and sorrow, the person is indeed falsely situated.

yathaiva mithyāpuruṣo rakṣanvyomātmaśaṅkayā | ghaṭākāśādiṣu kliṣṭa evaṃ mā kleśavānbhava || 14 ||

Just as a false person protects the sky with the doubt of the self, so he is afflicted in the space within a pot and so forth; thus, do not be afflicted.

ākāśādapi vistīrṇaḥ śuddhaḥ sūkṣmaḥ śivaḥ śubhaḥ | ya ātmā sa kathaṃ kena gṛhyate rakṣyate'thavā || 15 ||

That self, which is more expansive than space, pure, subtle, auspicious, and benevolent, how can it be grasped or protected by anyone?

hṛdayākāśamātrasya śarīrakṣayasaṃkṣaye | vyarthaṃ bhūtāni śocanti naṣṭa ātmeti śaṅkayā || 16 ||

When the body, which is merely the space of the heart, decays and perishes, beings mourn in vain, fearing that the self is lost.

ghaṭādiṣu praṇaṣṭeṣu yathākāśādyakhāṇḍitam | tathā deheṣu naṣṭeṣu dehī nityamalepakaḥ || 17 ||

Just as the space within pots remains unaffected when the pots are destroyed, similarly, the self remains unaffected when the bodies are destroyed.

śuddhaścinmātra ātmāyamākāśādapyṇoraṇuḥ | svānubhūtyaṃśamātraṃ hi khavadrāma na naśyati || 18 ||

This pure consciousness, the self, is subtler than space and the smallest particle. Indeed, it does not perish, just as space does not perish.

na jāyate na mriyate kvacitkiñcitkadācana | jagadvivartarūpeṇa kevalaṃ brahma jṛmbhate || 19 ||

It is neither born nor dies at any time. It manifests itself in the form of the world.

satyamekaṃ padaṃ śāntamādimadhyāntavarjitam | bhāvābhāvavinirmuktamiti matvā sukhī bhava || 20 ||

Knowing that the one true state is peaceful, devoid of beginning, middle, and end, and free from existence and non-existence, be happy.

sarvāpadāṃ nilayamadhruvamasvatantramāsannapātamavivekamanāryamajñaṃ | bodhādahaṃkṛtipadaṃ sakalaṃ vimucya śeṣe subaddhapadamuttamatāṃ prayāsi || 21 ||

Abandoning all misfortunes, which are transient, dependent, imminent, lacking discernment, ignoble, and ignorant, and renouncing the ego born of knowledge, one attains the supreme state of the well-established.
