16.11.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca punaḥpunaridaṃ rāma prabodhārthaṃ mayocyate abhyāsena vinā sādho nābhyudetyātmabhāvanā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Rama, I tell you this again and again, so that you understand it. Good man, without practice, awareness of the self does not arise.

ajñāname tadbalavadavidyetaranāmakam janmāntarasahasrotthaṃ ghanaṃ sthitimupāgatam || 2 ||

This ignorance is powerful; it is also called by the name avidya. Risen from a thousand past lives, it has grown dense and become fixed in place.

sabāhyābhyantaraṃ sarvairindriyairanubhūyate bhāvābhāveṣu dehasya tenātighanatāṃ gatam || 3 ||

It is felt with all the senses, outside and inside, whether the body exists or does not exist. Because of this, it has become extremely dense.

ātmajñānaṃ tu sarveṣāmindriyāṇāmagocaram sattāṃ kevalamāyāti manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyakṣaye || 4 ||

But knowledge of the self is beyond the reach of all the senses. It comes into being only when the six senses — the five senses and the mind — subside.

prollaṅghayendriyajāṃ vṛttiṃ yatsthitaṃ tatkathaṃ kila yāti pratyakṣatāṃ jantoḥ pratyakṣātītavṛttimat || 5 ||

Knowledge of the self stands beyond anything the senses produce. So how could it ever come within a creature's direct sight, when its very nature is to be beyond direct sight?

tvamavidyālatāmetāṃ prarūḍhāṃ hṛdayadruma | jñānābhyāsavilāsāsipātaiśchindhi svasiddhaye || 6 ||

Cut down this creeper of ignorance that has grown thick over the tree of your heart. Strike it with the sword-blows of joyful practice in knowledge, for your own success.

yathā viharati jñātajñeyo janakabhūpatiḥ | ātmajñānābhyāsaparastathā vihara rāghava || 7 ||

As King Janaka lives, having known what there is to know, so you too should live, Raghava, devoted to the practice of self-knowledge.

niścayo'yamabhūttasya kāryākāryavihāriṇaḥ | jāgratastiṣṭhato vāpi tajjñānāṃ tena satyatā || 8 ||

This was the conviction that stayed with Janaka, as he moved between doing and not doing, whether he was awake and busy or sitting quite still. It was this conviction that made his knowledge real.

niścayena hariryena vivividhācārakāriṇā | yoniṣvavataratyurvyāṃ tat tajjñatvamudāhṛtam || 9 ||

By the same conviction Hari uses when, acting in many different ways, he takes birth in various wombs on this earth — that conviction itself is called true knowledge.

The conviction that the three-eyed god holds while he dwells together with his beloved — or that Brahma holds, untouched by passion — may that same conviction be yours, Raghava.

yo niścayaḥ suragurorvākpaterbhārgavasya ca | divākarasya śaśinaḥ pavanasya analasya ca || 11 ||

The conviction held by the gods' teacher, who is also the lord of speech, and by Bhargava; by the Sun, the Moon, the Wind, and Fire —

nāradasya pulastyasya mama cāṅgirasastathā | pracetaso bhṛgoścaiva kratoratreḥ śukasya ca || 12 ||

of Narada, of Pulastya, of me, and of Angiras; of Pracetas, of Bhrigu, of Kratu, of Atri, and of Shuka —

anyeṣāmeva viprendra rājarṣīṇāṃ ca rāghava | yo niścayo vimuktānāṃ jīvatāṃ te bhavatvasau || 13 ||

And of others too, O foremost of the wise, and of the royal sages, Raghava — the conviction held by those who are liberated while still alive: may that same conviction become yours.

śrīrāma uvāca | yenaita bhagavandhīrā niścayena mahādhiyaḥ | viśokāḥ saṃsthitāstanme brahmanprabrūhi tattvataḥ || 14 ||

Sri Rama said: Venerable one, tell me truly what that conviction is, by which these steady, great-minded ones remain free of sorrow.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | rājaputra mahābāho viditākhilavedya he | sphuṭaṃ śṛṇu yathā pṛṣṭamayameṣāṃ hi niścayaḥ || 15 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Prince, mighty-armed one, you who already know all there is to know — listen clearly, as you have asked. This, indeed, is their conviction.

yadidaṃ kiṃcidābhogi jagajjālaṃ pradṛśyate | tatsarvamamalaṃ brahma bhavatyetadvyavasthitam || 16 ||

Whatever is seen here as this whole spreading net of the world — all of it is nothing but pure Brahman. This is settled and certain.

brahma cidbrahma bhuvanaṃ brahma bhūtaparamparāḥ | brahmāhaṃ brahma macchatruḥbrahma sanmitrabāndhavāḥ || 17 ||

Brahman is consciousness, Brahman is the world, Brahman is every being through its long lineage. Brahman is I, Brahman is my enemy, Brahman is my friends and kin.

brahma kālatrayaṃ tacca brahmaṇyeva vyavasthitam | taraṅgamālayāmbhodhiryathātmani vivardhate || 18 ||

Brahman is the three times — past, present, and future — and these rest in Brahman alone, just as the ocean swells within itself through a chain of waves.

tathā padārthalakṣmyetthamidaṃ brahma vivardhate | gṛhyate brahmaṇā brahma bhujyate brahma brahmaṇā || 19 ||

In the same way, Brahman spreads out as all these many things we see. Brahman grasps Brahman, and Brahman enjoys Brahman.

brahma brahmaṇi bṛṃhābhirbrahmaśaktyeva bṛṃhati | brahma macchatru rūpaṃ me brahmaṇo'priyakṛdyadi || 20 ||

Brahman grows within Brahman through its own expansions, by the power of Brahman alone. Brahman itself takes the form of my enemy; even if he does something that displeases me, that too is Brahman's doing.

tadbrahmaṇi brahmaniṣṭhaṃ kimanyatkasyacitkṛtam | rāgādīnāmavasthānaṃ kalpitānāṃ khavṛkṣavat || 21 ||

That which rests in Brahman, fixed firmly in Brahman — what else could anyone really do? The existence of passion and its kin is imagined, like a tree growing in the sky.

asaṃkalpena naṣṭānāṃ kaḥ prasaṅgo'tra vardhate | brahmaṇyeva hi sarvasmiṃścaraṇaspandanādikam || 22 ||

For things that vanish the moment intention stops, what real connection can grow here? All movement — even the stirring of a foot — happens in Brahman alone, in everything.

sphurati brahma sakalaṃ sukhitāduḥkhite kutaḥ | brahma brahmaṇi saṃtṛptaṃ brahma brahmaṇi saṃsthitam || 23 ||

Brahman alone shines forth as everything; how, then, can an unhappy person be different from a happy one? Brahman is content in Brahman, Brahman rests in Brahman.

sphurati brahmaṇi brahma nāhamasmītarātmakaḥ | ghaṭo brahma paṭo brahma brahmāhamidamātatam || 24 ||

Brahman shines within Brahman; I am not something separate from it. The pot is Brahman, the cloth is Brahman. I am Brahman, and this whole world is filled with it.

ato rāgavirāgāṇāṃ mṛṣeva kalaneha kā | maraṇabrahmaṇi svairaṃ dehabrahmaṇi saṅgate || 25 ||

So what false idea is this — of attachment and detachment — when death, which is Brahman, simply meets the body, which is also Brahman?

duḥkhitānām kaiva syādrajjusarpabhramopamā saṃbhogādau sukhaṃ brahmaṇyāsthite dehabrahmaṇi || 26 ||

So what is the sorrow of the sorrowful but the illusion of a snake mistaken for a rope? And the same is true of the pleasure in enjoyment, when the body — itself Brahman — simply rests in Brahman.

sampannametanma iti mudhā syātkalanā kutaḥ vīcyambhasoḥ spandavatorna tvanyadambuno yathā || 27 ||

The thought 'this has happened to me' would be pointless — how could it even arise? It is like the wave and the water: both stir and move, but the wave is nothing other than the water.

tvattāmattetathā na sto brahmaṇi spandarūpiṇi yathāvartamṛte toye na kiṃcinmriyate kvacit || 28 ||

In the same way, 'you' and 'I' do not really exist as two, within Brahman, whose very nature is movement. Just as a whirlpool is nothing apart from the water, nothing anywhere really dies.

mṛtibrahmatvamāyāte dehabrahmaṇi vai tathā yathā calācale toye tvattāmattena tiṣṭhatḥ || 29 ||

The body too is Brahman. So when what we call death comes to it, it is like this: in water that keeps moving and then goes still, no wave stays fixed forever as this one or that one.

tathā jaḍājaḍe rūpe na sthite paramātmani kaṭakatvaṃ yathā hemno yathāvarto jalasya ca || 30 ||

In the same way, the forms called living and lifeless do not really stand apart in the highest self, just as a bangle is nothing but gold, and a whirlpool is nothing but water.

tadatadbhāvarūpeyaṃ tathā prakṛtirātmanaḥ | idaṃ hi jīvabhūtātma jaḍarūpamidaṃ bhavet || 31 ||

In the same way, the true nature of the self shows itself as both this and not this. The very self that has become a living being also becomes this lifeless thing.

ityajñānātmano moho na ca jñānātmanaḥ kvacit | ajñasya duḥkhaughamayaṃ jñasyānandamayaṃ jagat || 32 ||

So this confusion belongs only to the one whose mind is ignorance, never at all to the one whose mind is knowledge. For the ignorant, the world is a flood of suffering; for the one who knows, the world is made of joy.

andhaṃ bhuvanamandhasya prakāśaṃ tu sacakṣuṣaḥ | jagadekātmakaṃ jñasya mūrkhasyātīva duḥkhadam || 33 ||

The world is dark for a blind man, but bright for one who has eyes. For the one who knows, the world is one single self; for the fool, it brings great suffering.

śiśoriva sphuradyakṣā niśā puṃsastu kevalā | asminbrahmaghaṭe nityamekasmin sarvataḥ sthite || 34 ||

To a child, the night seems full of a flickering ghost, but to a grown man it is simply night, nothing more. It is the same with this one eternal vessel that is Brahman, present everywhere.

na kiṃcinmriyate nāma na ca kiṃcana jīvati | yathollāsavilāseṣu na naśyati na jāyate || 35 ||

Nothing, in truth, ever dies, and nothing, in truth, ever lives, just as, in its own rising and playful movement, nothing is destroyed and nothing is born.

taraṅgādimahāmbhodhau bhūtavṛndaṃ tathātmaniidaṃ nāstīdamastīti bhrāntirnāmātmanātmani || 36 ||

Just as waves and the like appear in the great ocean, so the whole crowd of created beings appears in the self. To say this does not exist and this exists is nothing but delusion, arising in the self about the self.

śaktirnirhetukaivāntaḥ sphurati sphaṭikāṃśuvatjagacchaktyātmanātmaiva brahma svātmani saṃsthitam || 37 ||

A power with no cause of its own shines from within, like light flashing off a crystal. As the power that turns into the world, the self, which is Brahman, rests inside itself alone.

taraṅgakaṇajālena payasīva payo ghanamśarīranāśena kathaṃ brahmaṇo mṛtadhīrbhavet || 38 ||

Just as water thickened by a mass of waves and droplets is still only water, so how, by the destruction of the body, could the thought Brahman has died ever arise?

brahmaṇo vyatiriktaṃ hi na śarīrādi vidyatepayaso vyatirekeṇa taraṅgādi mahārṇave || 39 ||

Indeed, the body and everything else have no existence apart from Brahman, just as, in the great ocean, waves and the rest have no existence apart from water.

yaḥ kaṇo yā ca kaṇikā yā vīciryastaraṅgakaḥyaḥ pheno yā ca laharī tadyathā vāri vāriṇi || 40 ||

Whatever is a drop, whatever is a tiny droplet, whatever is a ripple, whatever is a small wave, whatever is foam, and whatever is a big wave, all of it is simply water within water.

yo deho yā ca kalanā yaddṛśyaṃ yau kṣayākṣayau yā bhāvaracanā yo'rthastayā tadbrahma brahmaṇi || 41 ||

Whatever is a body, whatever is a thought, whatever is seen, whatever is perishable or imperishable, whatever is the whole arrangement of things, whatever is an object, all of it, in the same way, is simply Brahman within Brahman.

saṃsthānaracanā citrā brahmaṇaḥ kanakādiva nānyarūpā vimūḍhānāṃ mṛṣaiva dvitvabhāvanā || 42 ||

Brahman's many different shapes are like things made of gold, they are nothing but gold itself. Only fools hold the false idea that there are two separate things.

mano buddhirahaṃkārastanmātrāṇīndriyāṇi ca brahmaiva sarvaṃ nānātma sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ na vidyate || 43 ||

Mind, intellect, the sense of I, the subtle elements, and the senses, all this is nothing but Brahman. There is no separate self anywhere, and pleasure and pain do not really exist.

ayaṃ so'hamidaṃ cittamityādyarthottayā girā śabdapratiśraveṇādrāvivātmātmani jṛmbhate || 44 ||

Through words like this, that, I, and this is the mind, by a kind of echo of sound, like an echo bouncing off a mountain, the self simply unfolds within itself.

brahmaivājñātamajñatvamabhyāgatamiva sthitam tathā hi dṛśyate svapne cetasātmanātmanaḥ || 45 ||

When Brahman is not known, it seems as if not-knowing has settled onto it, the same way a person's own mind shows the self things about itself in a dream.

abhāvitaṃ brahmatayā brahmājñānamalaṃ bhavet abhāvitaṃ hemata yathā hema ca mṛdbhavet || 46 ||

Brahman, when not known as Brahman, seems stained by ignorance, just as gold, when not recognized as gold, seems like mere clay.

svayaṃ prabhurmahātmaiva brahma brahmavidoviduḥ aparijñātamajñānamajñānāmiti kathyate || 47 ||

Those who know Brahman know it as its own master, the great self. What has not been fully understood is called the ignorance of those who do not know.

jñātaṃ brahmatayā brahma brahmaiva bhavati kṣaṇāt jñātaṃ hemata yā hema hemaiva bhavati kṣaṇāt || 48 ||

Brahman, once known as Brahman, becomes purely Brahman in an instant, just as gold, once recognized as gold, becomes purely gold in an instant.

brahmātmā sarvaśaktirhi tadyathā bhāvayatyalam nirhetukaḥ svayaṃ śaktyā tattathāśu prapaśyati || 49 ||

The self that is Brahman has every power. Whatever it fully conceives, by its own power and without any outside cause, it quickly sees come about, exactly as conceived.

akarmakartṛkaraṇamakāraṇamanāmayam svayaṃprabhuṃ mahātmānaṃ brahma brahmavidoviduḥ || 50 ||

The knowers of Brahman know it as having no action, no doer, no means of acting, as having no cause and no illness, as its own master, the great self.

516.11.51

aparijñātamajñānāmajñānamiti kathyate | parijñātaṃ bhavejjñānamajñānaparināśanam || 51 ||

What has not been fully understood is called ignorance for the ignorant. What has been fully understood becomes knowledge, which completely destroys ignorance.

bandhurevāparijñāto hyabandhuriti kathyate parijñāto bhavedbandhurabandhubhramanāśanāt || 52 ||

A relative, when not recognized, is indeed called not a relative. Once recognized, he becomes known as a relative, because the false idea of not a relative is destroyed.

dvaitaṃ tvasyamityantarjñāte sodeti bhāvanā | tasmādvaitācca vairasyādyayā kila virajyate || 54 ||

When someone comes to know, deep within, that this idea of two separate things is false, that feeling rises up in him. Because of that duality, and the distaste it brings, he truly becomes free of desire.

ayaṃ nāhamiti jñāte sphuṭe sodeti bhāvanā | mithyāhaṃkāratā tasmādyayā nūnaṃ virajyate || 55 ||

When it becomes clear and known that this is not I, that feeling rises up. From it comes the sense that the idea of I was false, and through that, one truly becomes free of desire.

brahmaivāhamiti jñāne satye sodeti bhāvanā | tasmin satye nije rūpe yathāntaḥ parilīyate || 56 ||

When the true knowledge I am Brahman alone arises, that feeling comes up, and in that true, own nature, one dissolves completely within it.

sati vistāraje tasminbrahmedamiti vedmyahamtvamahaṃtvādibādhe tatsadityādi jagadgatam || 57 ||

When that feeling has grown and truly settled in, I know, this is Brahman. Once the difference between you and I is set aside, all that is left, through the whole world, is simply that is real.

satyaṃ sarvaprakārāḍhyaṃ brahmedamiti vedmyahamna me duḥkhaṃ na karmāṇi na me moho na vāñchitam || 58 ||

I know this truth, full in every way, as Brahman. I have no sorrow, no actions, no delusion, and no desire.

samaḥ svastho viśoko'smi brahmāhamiti satyatākalākalaṅkamukto'smi sarvamasmi nirāmayaḥ || 59 ||

I am balanced, steady, and free from sorrow — the truth is that I am Brahman. I am free of every blemish, I am everything, and I am free of all illness.

na tyajāmi na vāñchāmi brahmāhamiti satyatāahaṃ raktamahaṃ māṃsamahamasthīnyahaṃ vapuḥ || 60 ||

I reject nothing and I want nothing — the truth is that I am Brahman. I am the blood, I am the flesh, I am the bones, I am the body.

cidahaṃ cetanaṃ cāhaṃ brahmāhamiti satyatādyaurahaṃ khamahaṃ sārkamahamāśā bhuvo'pyaham || 61 ||

I am consciousness, and I am the conscious self — the truth is that I am Brahman. I am the sky, I am space, I am the sun, I am the directions, and I am the earth too.

ahaṃ ghaṭapaṭākāro brahmāhamiti satyatā | ahaṃ tṛṇamahaṃ corvī gulmo'haṃ kānanādyaham || 62 ||

I am the shape of a pot, and I am the shape of a cloth — the truth is that I am Brahman. I am grass, and I am the earth, I am the bush, and I am the forest and everything else.

śailasāgarasārtho'haṃ brahmaikatvaṃ kila sthitam | ādānadānasankocapūrvikā bhūtaśaktayaḥ || 63 ||

I am the whole mass of mountains and oceans — the oneness of Brahman truly stands firm. The powers of living beings begin with taking in, giving out, and drawing back.

sarvameva cidātmāsmi brahmaṇyātatatārūpadhṛk | latāgulmāṅkurādīnāmahaṃsaṃbhavanaiṣiṇām || 64 ||

I am indeed everything, the self that is consciousness, wearing a form spread through Brahman — the form of creepers, bushes, sprouts, and the rest, all of which long to spring up into their own being.

cidātmāntargataṃ śāntaṃ paraṃ brahma rasātmakam | yasmin sarvaṃ yataḥ sarvaṃ yat sarvaṃ sarvataś ca yat || 65 ||

The self that is consciousness, gone deep within and at peace, is the supreme Brahman, the very essence of it all — the one in whom everything rests, from whom everything comes, who is everything, and who is present everywhere.

yo mataḥ sarva ekātmā paraṃ brahmeti niścayaḥ | cidātmā brahma satsatyamṛtaṃ jña iti nāmabhiḥ || 66 ||

What is recognized as the one self in all is settled as the supreme Brahman. This same conscious self, Brahman, goes by the names Sat, Satya, Rta, and Jna — that is, Being, Truth, the Right, and the Knower.

procyate sarvagaṃ tattvaṃ cinmātraṃ cetyavarjitam| ābhāsamātramamalaṃ sarvabhūtātmabodhakam || 67 ||

It is called the reality that reaches everywhere, pure consciousness alone, with nothing outside it left to know. It is mere shining, without stain, and it makes known the self within every being.

sarvatrāvasthitaṃ śāntaṃ cidbrahmetyanubhūyate| manobuddhīndriyavrātasamastakalanānvitam || 68 ||

Present everywhere and at peace, it is felt as consciousness that is Brahman — joined to all the working of the mind, the intellect, and the senses together.

bhedaṃ tyaktvā svamābhāsaṃ cidbrahmāhamanāmayam| śabdādīnāmaśeṣāṇāṃ kāraṇānāṃ jagatsthiteḥ || 69 ||

Having let go of all distinction, I am my own shining light — I am consciousness-Brahman, free from affliction. I am the source of every unending cause — sound and the rest — by which the world goes on existing.

tattvāvakāśakaṃ svacchaṃ cidbrahmāsmi na me kṣayaḥ| anāratagalatsvacchaciddhārāgahanātmakam || 70 ||

I am the clear consciousness-Brahman that makes room for all reality; nothing in me ever decays. I am the dense fullness of a clear stream of consciousness, flowing without pause.

ālokaḥ sumanomauṇaṃ cidbrahmāsmyamṛtaṃ param| anāratagaladrūpaṃ nityaṃ cānubhavāmṛtam || 71 ||

The light is the silent peace of a good mind; I am consciousness-Brahman, the highest nectar of immortality — flowing on without pause, eternal, the very nectar of direct experience.

726.11.72

ahaniḥśeṣacakrāṇi cidbrahmāhamalepakam | suṣuptasadṛśaṃ śāntamālokavimalātmakam || 72 ||

I am consciousness-Brahman — all the unbroken cycles of days, untouched by any stain, calm like dreamless sleep, and as pure in nature as clear light.

saṃbhogottamamābhāsaṃ cidbrahmāsmyapavāsanam | khaṇḍādisvādusaṃvittirīṣanmātrā tu tiṣṭhati || 73 ||

I am consciousness-Brahman, the finest shining of all enjoyment, free of any lingering craving. The taste of sweetness in sugar and the like remains only a faint thing.

cittādiṣvavabuddheṣu taddhi brahmāhamacyutaḥ | kāntāsaṃsaktacittasya candre samudite sati || 74 ||

When the mind and the other faculties are fully known, that itself is Brahman; I am the changeless one. A man's heart clings to his beloved, and the moon has risen in the sky.

candrapratyayasattvātma cidbrahmāhamanāmayam | bhūmiṣṭhanaradṛṣṭīnāṃ lagnānāṃ khe niśākare || 75 ||

My own self is the very awareness that appears as the moon; I am consciousness-Brahman, free from every flaw. The eyes of men standing on the earth are fixed on the moon in the sky.

yā khasthā nanu cicchaktistaccidbrahmāsti nirmalam | sukhaduḥkhādikalanāvikalo nirmalastathā || 76 ||

That power of consciousness that stands in the sky is itself the stainless consciousness-Brahman. In the same way, I am free from the workings of pleasure and pain, and free of every stain.

satyānubhavarūpātma cidbrahmātmāsmi śāśvataḥ| asaṃstutādhvagāloke manasyanyatra saṃsthite || 77 ||

My self, whose very nature is true, direct experience, is the eternal self of consciousness-Brahman. A stranger walks along the road while the mind is fixed elsewhere.

yā pratītiranāgaskā taccidbrahmāsmi sarvagaḥ| bhūvāryanilabījānāṃ saṃbandhe'ṅkurakarmasu || 78 ||

That bare perception, free of any attachment, is itself what I am — consciousness-Brahman, present everywhere. Earth, water, wind, and seed come together in the work of sprouting.

śaktirudgamanīyāntastaccidbrahmāhamātatam| kharjūranimbabimbānāṃ svayamātmani tiṣṭhatām || 79 ||

The power within the seed that is ready to sprout is itself what I am — consciousness-Brahman, spread through everything. Date palms, neem trees, and bimba plants stand by themselves, each in its own nature.

yā svādasattā līnāntastadbrahma cidahaṃ samaḥ| khedānandavimuktāntaḥ saṃvittirmamanodayā || 80 ||

The sweetness hidden within them is itself Brahman; I am that same consciousness. My awareness, free within from both sorrow and joy, arises through quiet reflection.

lābhālābhavidhau tulyā cidbrahmāsmi nirāmayam| yāvadbhūmyarkametāvaddṛṣṭisūtraṃ yadātatam || 81 ||

Whether there is gain or loss, I remain the same — I am consciousness-Brahman, free from every flaw. The thread of sight stretches out exactly as far as the earth and the sun.

tanmadhyasadṛśaṃ śāntaṃ nirmalaṃ cidahaṃ tatam | jāgratyapi suṣupte'pi tatsvapne'pi tathoditam || 82 ||

Calm and stainless like the middle point of that thread, I, consciousness, stretch through the whole of it. It appears the same way in waking, in deep sleep, and in dream.

turyaṃ rūpamanādyantaṃ cidbrahmāhamanāmayam | puṃsāṃ kṣetraśatottānāmikṣūṇāṃ svāduvatsthitam || 83 ||

I am the Fourth state, the form that has no beginning and no end — I am consciousness-Brahman, free from every flaw. It is present the way sweetness is present in sugarcanes grown in a hundred different men's fields.

sarveṣāmekarūpaṃ taccidbrahmāsmi samaḥ sthitaḥ | sarvagā prakṛtā svaccharūpā bhānoriva prabhā || 84 ||

That single sweetness present the same in all of them is itself what I am — consciousness-Brahman, standing equal everywhere. All-pervading, natural, clear in form, like the light of the sun.

ālokakāriṇī kāntā cidbrahmedamahaṃ tatam | saṃbhogānandalavavadamṛtāsvādaśaktivat || 85 ||

I am this consciousness and Brahman, spread through everything, lovely, the maker of light, like a drop of the joy of union, like the power to taste nectar.

svānubhūtyaikamātraṃ yaccidbrahmāsmi tadavyayam | protāṅgamapi guptāsyaṃ dehe tanturbise yathā || 86 ||

I am that imperishable consciousness and Brahman, known only through one's own experience, strung through every part of the body yet hidden at its ends, like the fibre inside a lotus stalk.

chede bhede sphuradrūpaṃ cidbrahmāhamanāmayam ākrāntabhuvanāpyabhramāleva spandaśālinī || 87 ||

I am consciousness and Brahman, free from sickness, a form that flashes out in every cutting and every division, and though it has spread over the whole world, it quivers like a line of clouds.

durlakṣyāṇumayākārā cicchaktirahamātatā anubhūtimayāntasthā snehamātropalakṣitā || 88 ||

I am the power of consciousness, hard to see, made of tiny particles in form, spread everywhere, standing within as pure experience, known only by the mark of affection.

kṣīrāddhṛtasya satteva cidahaṃ kṣayavarjitā kaṭakāṅgadakeyūraracanā tadatanmayī || 89 ||

I am consciousness, free from decay, like the being that comes out of milk as ghee, like a bracelet, an armlet and a band shaped from gold, forms that are gold and yet are not merely gold.

hemnīva saṃsthitā dehe cidbrahmātmāsmi sarvagaḥ padārthaughasya śailāderbahirantaśca sarvadā || 90 ||

I am the self that is consciousness and Brahman, present everywhere, existing in the mass of things the way gold exists in an ornament, always both outside and inside all things, mountains and the rest.

sattāsāmānyarūpeṇa yā citso'hamalepakaḥ sarvāsāmanubhūtīnāmādarśo yo hyakṛtrimaḥ || 91 ||

I am that consciousness which, as being itself, stays untouched by anything, the natural mirror of every experience.

agamyo malalekhānāṃ taccittattvamahaṃ mahat sarvasaṃkalpaphaladaṃ sarvatejaḥprakāśakam || 92 ||

I am that great principle of consciousness, which no line of dirt can reach, the giver of the fruit of every wish, the light that lights up all brightness.

idaṃ tvayuktamityantarjñāte sodeti bhāvanā yasmādayuktādvairasyādyayā kila virajyate || 93 ||

When someone knows inside that this is wrong, that feeling arises in him, a distaste for what is wrong, by which he truly becomes detached.

anāratakacadrūpaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe ghaṭe paṭe taṭe kūpe spandamānaṃ sadā tanau || 94 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, the form that shines without a break, always quivering in the body, in the pot, in the cloth, on the bank, in the well.

jāgratyapi suṣuptasthaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe uṣṇamagnau hime śītaṃ mṛṣṭamanne śitaṃ kṣure || 95 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, present as if in deep sleep even while awake, hot in fire, cold in ice, tasty in food, sharp in the razor.

kṛṣṇaṃ dhvānte sitaṃ candre cidātmānamupāsmahe ālokaṃ bahirantasthaṃ sthitaṃ ca svātmavastuni || 96 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, dark in darkness, white in the moon, the light standing both outside and inside, resting in its own true nature.

adūramapi dūrasthaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe mādhuryādiṣu mādhuryaṃ tīkṣṇādiṣu ca tīkṣṇatām || 97 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, near and yet standing far away, sweetness in sweet things, sharpness in sharp things.

gataṃ padārthajāteṣu cidātmānamupāsmahe jāgratsvapnasuṣupteṣu turyāturyātige pade || 98 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, present in every kind of thing, in waking, in dream, in deep sleep, and in the state that lies beyond both the fourth state and what is not the fourth state.

samaṃ sadaiva sarvatra cidātmānamupāsmahe praśāntasarvasaṃkalpaṃ vigatākhilakautukam || 99 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, equal always and everywhere, every thought fully stilled in it, all curiosity gone from it.

vigatāśeṣasaṃrambhaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe niṣkautukaṃ nirārambhaṃ nirīhaṃ sarvameva ca || 100 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, all agitation fully gone from it, free of curiosity, taking up nothing, wanting nothing, and yet it is everything.

niraṃśaṃ nirahaṃkāraṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe sarvasyāntaḥsthitaṃ sarvamapyapāraikarūpiṇam || 101 ||

We meditate on the self as consciousness, not made of parts, without ego, standing inside everything, and though it is everything, of one boundless form.

aparyantacidārambhaṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ trailokyadehamuktānāṃ tantumunnatamātatam || 102 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, whose start is boundless consciousness itself, the high, far-reaching thread running through all who are freed from the bodies of the three worlds.

pracārasaṃkocakaraṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ līnamantarbahiḥsvāptānkroḍīkṛtya jagatkhagān || 103 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, which makes things spread out and draw in, dissolved both inside and outside, holding to itself, as its own kind, the birds of the world.

citraṃ bṛhajjālamiva cidātmānamupāgataḥ sarvaṃ yatredamastyeva nāstyeva ca manāgapi || 104 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, like a great, wondrous net, in which all this indeed exists, and yet does not exist even a little.

sadasadrūpamekaṃ taṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ paramapratyayaṃ pūrṇamāspadaṃ sarvasaṃpadām || 105 ||

I have reached that one self, consciousness, which has the form of both the real and the unreal, the highest certainty, complete, the resting place of every treasure.

sarvākāravihārasthaṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ snehādhāramatho'śāntaṃ jaḍavātāhatibhramaiḥ || 106 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, present in play through every form, the ground of affection, yet made restless by the confusion stirred up by the blows of a mindless wind.

yuktaṃ muktaṃ ca ciddīpaṃ bahirantarupāsmahe hṛtsaraḥpadminīkandaṃ tantuṃ sarvāṅgasundaram || 107 ||

We worship the lamp of consciousness, both bound and free, outside and inside, the root of the lotus in the lake of the heart, the fibre beautiful in every part.

janatājīvanopāyaṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ akṣīrārṇavasaṃbhūtamaśaśāṅkamupasthitam || 108 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, the means of life for all people, arisen though not from any ocean of milk, present though it is not the moon.

ahāryamamṛtaṃ satyaṃ cidātmānamupāsmahe śabdarūparasasparśagandhairābhāsamāgatam || 109 ||

We worship the self as consciousness, never to be taken away, immortal, true, which comes into appearance as sound, sight, taste, touch and smell.

taireva rahitaṃ śāntaṃ cidātmānamupāgataḥ ākāśakośaviśadaṃ sarvalokasya rañjanam || 110 ||

I have reached the self that is consciousness, peaceful, free from those very things, sound, sight, taste, touch and smell, clear as the vessel of space, delighting the whole world.

1116.11.111

I have reached the self that is consciousness, which is neither the one who delights nor space itself, which carries great glory yet has none of the powers of this world. I have reached the self that is consciousness, which is not the doer even when acting.

akhilamidamahaṃ mamaiva sarvaṃ tvahamapi nāhamathetaracca nāham iti viditavato jagatkṛtaṃ me sthiramathavāstu gatajvaro bhavāmi || 112 ||

All this is I, and everything is truly mine, yet I myself am not even I, and nothing else is I either. Knowing this, whether the world, my own making, stays fixed or not, I become free of all suffering.
