In this way their brilliance stayed hidden, like the arms of Narayana. They were straight, even though they looked unsteady, standing like so many Meru mountains.
Amid such delightful things, charming with the laughter of women, pleasant with play and food, they stayed adorned, in enjoyment and in abstaining alike.
They entered among beings, moving and still alike, where all creatures found their rest, into the round of sacrificial rites, and into household life, each in its proper order.
terurhatagajendrāsu bhrāntabhūriśivāsu ca | bherībhāṃkārabhīmāsu saṃgrāmārṇavavīthiṣu || 11 ||
They crossed the lanes of the sea of battle, terrible with the boom of war drums, where great elephants lay slain and many jackals prowled.
But their minds were free of passion, free of all limits, and free of confusion. Unattached, liberated, and deeply at peace, their minds had reached the highest state of being.
na mamlau duḥkhaśokena grīṣmeṇeva vanasthalam | jaharṣa ca na bhogaughairavaśyāyairivauṣadhīḥ || 16 ||
He did not wither with pain and grief, the way a forest withers in the summer heat, and he did not thrill with floods of pleasure, the way herbs thrill with the dew.
te hi kevalamavyagrāḥ kurvantaḥ kāmamañjarīḥ | iṣṭāniṣṭaphalaṃ rāma nābhileṣurna tatyajuḥ || 17 ||
They, simply undisturbed, carried out the flowering buds of desire. And, Rama, they neither craved the fruit, welcome or unwelcome, nor did they refuse it.
mumuhurna vimohaṣu na mamajjurvipatkramaaiḥ | na jaharṣuḥ śubhaiḥ śokairurudurna bhavāniv || 19 ||
They were not bewildered by bewildering things. They did not sink beneath the weight of misfortune. They did not delight in good fortune. And they did not weep with grief, as you do.
Why do you weep with such heavy distress, and grieve like a fool? You wander with a bewildered mind, like a blade of grass caught in a gentle whirlpool.
My pride and delusion are gone. I am free from arrogance and envy. My true self has awakened for good, and my grief is calmed at last. I will not fall into sorrow again. With a clear and single mind, whatever you tell me, good sage, I will do without any doubt.
