15.91.1

śrīrāma uvāca | paramākāśakośādrirūḍhalokāntaradrumam | tārakāpuṣpaśabalaṃ devāsuravihangamam || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: There is a tree grown on the mountain that holds the highest sky inside it, standing among all the worlds. Its flowers are the stars, scattered everywhere, and gods and demons are the birds living on it.

25.91.2

vidyunmañjaritopāntanīlanīradapallavam | sarvarturamya candrārkagaṇaramyakadanturam || 2 ||

Dark clouds are its new shoots, blossoming at its edges with flashes of lightning. It is jagged with many moons and suns, delightful through every season.

35.91.3

saptābdhivāpīvalitaṃ saricchatamanoharam | caturdaśavidhānantabhūtajātopajīvitam || 3 ||

The seven oceans surround it like ponds, and hundreds of rivers make it beautiful. Endless creatures, born in all fourteen worlds, live on it.

jagatkānanamākramya sthitāyāḥ kṛtajālakam | brahmansaṃsṛtimṛdvīkālatāyā vitatākṛteḥ || 4 ||

O Brahmin, a creeper has spread over the whole forest of the world and settled there, catching it in a net. This creeper is the vine of the endless cycle of rebirth, its shape stretching out far and wide.

55.91.5

jarāmaraṇaparvāyāḥ sukhaduḥkhaphalāvaleḥ | ārūḍhamūlamālāyā mohasekajalāñjaleḥ || 5 ||

Old age and death are its joints. Pleasure and pain are the row of fruits it bears. Its roots have grown up and spread everywhere, and delusion is the water that feeds it.

kiṃ bījamatha bījasya tasya kiṃ bījamucyateatha tasyāpi kiṃ bījaṃ bījaṃ tasyāpi kiṃ bhavet || 6 ||

What is the seed of this vine? And what is called the seed of that seed? Then what is the seed of that one too? What, again, would be the seed of that?

sarvametatsamāsena punarbodhavivṛddhayesiddhaye jñānasārasya vada me vadatāṃvara || 7 ||

Tell me all this in brief, so that my understanding may grow again, and so that I may grasp the heart of true knowledge, O best of all speakers.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaantarlīnaghanārambhaśubhāśubhamahāṅkuramsaṃsṛtivrataterbījaṃ śarīraṃ viddhi rāghava || 8 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Know this, Raghava, the body is the seed of the vine of endless rebirth. It is a great sprout, hidden deep within, packed tight at first, that grows out into everything good and bad.

śākhāpratānagahanā phalapallavaśālinīteneyaṃ bhavati sphītā śaradīva vasundharā || 9 ||

This vine, thick with spreading branches, rich with fruit and shoots, grows abundant because of that seed, the way the earth grows abundant in autumn.

bhāvābhāvadaśākośaṃ duḥkharatnasamudgakambījamasya śarīrasya cittamāśāvaśānugam || 10 ||

The seed of this body is the mind. The mind is a box that holds both being and not being. It is a small casket holding the jewel of suffering, and it follows wherever desire leads.

cittādidamudetyuccaiḥ sadasaccāṅgajālakamtathā caitatsvayaṃ svapnasaṃbhrameṣvanubhūyate || 11 ||

From the mind surges up this whole net of things, both real and unreal. You can see this for yourself in the confusion of a dream.

yathā gandharvasaṃkalpātpuramevaṃ hi cetasaḥsavātāyanamākārabhāsuraṃ jāyate vapuḥ || 12 ||

Just as a city in the sky appears from pure imagination, so a body is born from the mind, complete with windows and bright in shape.

yadidaṃ kiṃcidābhogi jāgataṃ dṛśyatāṃ gatamrūpaṃ taccetasaḥ sphāraṃ ghaṭāditvaṃ mṛdo yathā || 13 ||

Whatever we see in this waking world, in all its variety, is simply the mind stretched out into shape, the way a pot is nothing but clay.

dve bīje cittavṛkṣasya vṛttivratatidhāriṇaḥekaṃ prāṇaparispando dvitīyaṃ dṛḍhabhāvanā || 14 ||

The tree of the mind carries the vine of all its thoughts and activity, and this tree has two seeds. One seed is the movement of the breath. The other seed is a firm, fixed conviction.

yadā praspandate prāṇo nāḍīsaṃsparśanodyataḥtadā saṃvedanamayaṃ cittamāśu prajāyate || 15 ||

When the breath moves and touches the channels of the body, the mind full of feeling springs up at once.

yadā na spandate prāṇaḥ śirāsaraṇikoṭare | asaṃvittivashātena cittamantarna jāyate || 16 ||

But when the breath stays still inside the body's channels, there is no feeling, and so the mind does not arise at all.

prāṇaspandanamevedaṃ cittadvāreṇa dṛśyate | jagannāmāgataṃ vyomni nīlatvādivadīdṛśam || 17 ||

This whole thing called the world is seen through the gateway of the mind, and it is nothing but the vibration of the breath, like the blue of the sky, or other such things.

prāṇaspandanasuptā ca tacchāntiṃ śāntirucyate | prāṇasaṃspandanātsaṃvidyāti vīṭeva coditā || 18 ||

When the breath is still and consciousness rests with it, that stillness is called true peace. But when the breath stirs, consciousness sets off, like a ball that has just been struck.

saṃvitsphurati deheṣu prāṇaspandaprabodhitā | cakrāvartairaṅgaṇeṣu vīṭeva karatāḍitā || 19 ||

Consciousness stirs to life in bodies, woken by the movement of the breath. It spins round and round through open ground, like a ball struck by the hand.

satī sarvagatā saṃvitprāṇaspandena bodhyate | sūkṣmātsūkṣmatarākārā gandhalekheva vāyunā || 20 ||

Consciousness is present everywhere, but it becomes known only through the movement of the breath. Its shape is finer than the finest thing there is, like a trace of scent carried on the wind.

saṃvitsaṃrodhane śreyaḥ paramaṃ viddhi rāghava| kāraṇākramanaṃ yatra kṣobhas tatra na vidyate || 21 ||

Know this, Raghava, the greatest good lies in holding consciousness in check. Where the cause never stirs, no disturbance can ever arise.

saṃvitsamuditaivāśu yāti saṃvedyamādarāt| saṃvedanādanantāni tato duḥkhāni cetasaḥ || 22 ||

The instant consciousness arises, it rushes eagerly toward something to sense. And from that sensing come endless sufferings for the mind.

saṃsuptāntarabodhāya saṃvitsaṃtiṣṭhate yadā| labdhaṃ bhavati labdhavyaṃ tadā tadamalaṃ padam || 23 ||

When consciousness stops and turns instead toward the deep, sleeping awareness inside, then what is worth gaining is gained, that pure, stainless state.

tasmātprāṇaparispandairvāsanācodanais tathā| no cet saṃvidamucchūnāṃ karōṣi tadajo bhavān || 24 ||

So then, if you do not let the vibrations of the breath and the pull of your own impressions swell up your consciousness, you become the one who is never born again.

saṃviducchūnatāṃ cittaṃ viddhi tenedamātatam| anarthajālamālūnaviśīrṇajanajīvakam || 25 ||

Know that the mind is nothing but consciousness swollen up. Because of that, this whole world is stretched out, a net of misfortune in which people's lives are mown down and scattered.

yoginaścittashāntyarthaṃ kurvanti prāṇarodhanam | prāṇāyāmaistathā dhyānaiḥ prayogairyuktikalpitaiḥ || 26 ||

To calm the mind, yogis hold the breath in check. They do this through breath control, through meditation, and through methods worked out with careful reasoning.

cittopashāntiphalaṃdaṃ paramaṃ sāmyakāraṇam | subhagaṃ saṃvidaḥ svāsthyaṃ prāṇasarodhanaṃ viduḥ || 27 ||

They know that holding the breath in check gives the mind peace as its fruit. It is the greatest cause of calm balance, and the good health and steadiness of consciousness.

jñānavadbhiḥ prakaṭitāmanubhūtāṃ ca rāghava | cittasya utpattimaparāṃ vāsanājīvitāṃ śrṇu || 28 ||

Now listen, Raghava, to another account of how the mind arises, one shown and experienced by those who truly know, an origin that lives on nothing but impression.

dṛḍhabhāvanayā tyaktapūrvāparavicāraṇam | yadādānaṃ padārthasya vāsanā sā prakīrtitā || 29 ||

When something is seized upon through a firm, fixed conviction, with no thought given to what came before or what follows, that grasping is called an impression.

bhāvitastīvrasaṃvegādātmanā yattadeva saḥ | bhavatyāśu mahābāho vigatetarasaṃsmṛtiḥ || 30 ||

Whatever a person fixes his mind on with great intensity, that very thing he quickly becomes, O mighty-armed one, with every other memory gone.

vāsanāvegavaivashyātsvarūpaṃ prajahāti tat | bhrāntaṃ paśyati durdṛṣṭiḥ sarvaṃ madavaśādiva || 32 ||

Overpowered by the force of its own impressions, the mind loses its true nature. A person whose sight has gone bad sees everything wrongly, as if he were drunk.

tādṛgrūpaḥ sa puruṣo vāsanāvivaśīkṛtaḥ | yatpaśyati tadetattatsadvastviti vimuhyati || 33 ||

A person overpowered by his own impressions takes on that same nature; whatever he sees, he falls into the delusion that it is a real thing.

asamyagdarśanaṃ yasmādanātmanyātmabhāvanam | yadavastuni vastutvaṃ taccittaṃ viddhi rāghava || 34 ||

O Raghava, know that this wrong seeing is the mind — it imagines the self in what is not the self, and it sees something real in what is not real.

dṛḍhābhyāsapadārthaikavāsanādaticañcalam | cittaṃ saṃjāyate janmajarāmaraṇakāraṇam || 35 ||

From a single impression for one thing, held firm by long practice, the extremely restless mind is born — the cause of birth, old age, and death.

yadā na vāsyate kiñcid dheyopādeyarūpi yat | sthīyate sakalaṃ tyaktvā tadā cittaṃ na jāyate || 36 ||

When nothing that is to be rejected or taken up leaves any mark, and a person stays still, having let go of everything, then no mind is born.

avāsanatvātsatataṃ yadā na manute manaḥ| amanastā tadodeti paramopaśamapradā|| 37||

When, being always free of impressions, the mind stops thinking anything at all, then the state of no mind arises, which gives supreme peace.

yadā kiñcinnna saṃvittau sphuratyabhramivāmbare| tadā padma ivākāśe cittamantarnna jāyate|| 38||

When nothing at all rises up in awareness, as no cloud appears in a clear sky, then, like a lotus growing in the sky, no mind is born within.

yadā na bhāvyate bhāvaḥ kvacijjagati vastuni| tadā hṛdambare śūnye kathaṃ cittaṃ prajāyate|| 39||

When no notion is formed about anything at all in the world, then, in the empty sky of the heart, how can any mind be born?

etāvanmātrakaṃ manye rūpaṃ cittasya rāghava| yadbhāvanaṃ vastuno'ntarvastutvena rasena ca|| 40||

O Raghava, I hold that the nature of the mind is just this much: the inward imagining of a thing as real, done with relish.

na kiñcitkalpanāyogyaṃ dṛśyaṃ bhāvayatastataḥ| ākāśakośasvacchasya kutaścittodayo bhavet|| 41||

For one who then imagines no visible thing at all worth imagining, whose inner being is as clear as space, from where could a mind ever arise?

yadabhāvanamāsthāya yadabhāvasya bhāvanam | yadyathāvastudarśitvaṃ tadacittatvamucyate || 42 ||

Resting in the absence of imagining, taking the very absence of things as one's object, and seeing things exactly as they are — this is called the state of no mind.

sarvamantaḥ parityajya śītalāśayavarti yat | vṛttisthamapi taccittamasadrūpamudāhṛtam || 43 ||

The mind that, having given up everything within, rests in a cool, quiet place — even though it still exists as an activity, that mind is declared to have no real existence.

vāsanāyā rasādhyānādrāgo yasya na vidyate | tasya cittamacittatvaṃ gataṃ sattvaṃ taducyate || 44 ||

One in whom no attachment arises even from dwelling on the pleasure of an impression — his mind, having reached the state of no mind, is called pure being.

He whose impressions that cause rebirth are no longer thick — he is liberated while living, resting in pure being, carrying on like a wheel still turning from its own old momentum.

bhṛṣṭabījopamā yeṣāṃ punarjananavarjitā | vāsanārasanirhīnā jīvanmuktā hi te sthitāḥ || 46 ||

Those whose impressions are like roasted seeds, empty of the power to sprout again into birth, without even the relish of an impression left in them — they indeed stand as liberated while living.

sattvarūpapariprāptacittāste jñānapāragāḥ | acittā iti kathyante dehānte vyomarūpiṇaḥ || 47 ||

They whose minds have fully reached the nature of pure being, who have gone all the way to the end of knowledge — they are called the mindless ones, and when the body ends, they take on the nature of space.

dve bīje rāma cittasya prāṇaspandanavāsane | ekasmiṃśca tayoḥ kṣīṇe kṣipraṃ dve api naśyataḥ || 48 ||

O Rama, the mind has two seeds: the throb of the breath and the impression. When either one of the two fades away, both perish quickly.

mithaḥ kāraṇamete hi bīje janmani cetasaḥ | jalāṅgīkaraṇe rāma jalāśayaghaṭāviva || 49 ||

O Rama, these two seeds are indeed the cause of each other in the birth of the mind, like a lake and a pot, in the matter of holding water.

ghanā na vāsanā yasya punarjananakāriṇī | bījāṅkuravadete hi saṃsthite tilatailavat || 50 ||

For one whose impressions that cause rebirth are no longer thick, these two stand joined like seed and sprout, like the sesame seed and its oil.

avinābhāvinī nityaṃ kālākāṅkṣikrame tathā | sarvamutpādayatyetaccittakaḥ saṃvidātmakaḥ || 51 ||

Ever inseparable from each other, and unfolding gradually in time, this pair produces everything — this is what is called the mind, whose very nature is awareness.

yathāprāṇendriyānandamānandapavanāvubhau | cittasyotpādike sārdhaṃ yadaite vāsane tadā || 52 ||

Just as the breath and the pleasure of the senses, and joy together with the breath, are both producers of the mind, so it is when these two turn into impressions.

āmodapuṣpavattailatilavacca vyavasthite | vāsanāvaśataḥ prāṇaspandastena ca vāsanā || 53 ||

The two being set in place like fragrance in a flower, like oil in a sesame seed — from the force of the impression comes the throb of the breath, and from that throb comes the impression in turn.

jāyate cittabījasya tena bījāṅkurakramaḥ | vāsanotplavamānatvātsaṃvitprakṣobhakarmaṇā || 54 ||

In this way the seed-and-sprout process of the mind's seed comes about, because the impression keeps surging up, through the stirring up of awareness.

evaṃ hi vāsanāprāṇaspandau dvau tasya kāraṇam || 56 ||

Thus indeed, the impression and the throb of the breath, these two, are the cause of the mind.

tayorekakṣaye nāśo dvayościttasya rāghava | sukhaduḥkhamanḥspanda śārīrakavṛhatphalam || 57 ||

O Raghava, when one of the two is destroyed, both are destroyed, and with them the mind — its throb as pleasure and pain, and the great result bound up with the body.

585.91.58

kāryapallavitākāraṃ kṛtivratativēṣṭitam | tṛṣṇākṛṣṇāhivalitaṃ rāgarogabakālayam || 58 ||

It is a shape sprung up from action. It is bound round by the creeper of deeds. It is coiled by the black snake of craving. It is the home of the crane that is the disease of attachment.

prāṇaspandaṃ bodhayati tena cittaṃ prajāyate | prāṇaḥ spandanadharmitvātspandate spṛṣṭahṛdguṇaḥ || 59 ||

The impression rouses the throb of the breath, and from that the mind is born. Because the breath is vibrating by its very nature, it throbs, touching the heart with its quality.

prapātayati vātaughaḥ kālapakvaphalaṃ yathā | pāṇḍurīkṛtasarvāśaṃ sthagitākhiladarśanam || 60 ||

A gust of wind brings it down, just as it brings down a fruit ripened by time. It has turned every hope pale. It has shut out all sight.

vilolajaladākāram ajñānāvakarotthitam | tṛṣṇātṛṇalavavyāptaṃ stambhākṛti śarīrakam || 61 ||

This little body is shaped like a restless, drifting cloud. It has sprung up from the rubbish heap of ignorance. It is covered with the grass of craving. It is shaped like a post.

sphurattanu tanukṣubdhaṃ sukhamutplavanaṃ prati | antaḥsthitamahālokamapaśyatpravilīyate || 62 ||

With a quivering body, faintly stirred by a rush of pleasure, and not seeing the great world within, it melts away.

pavanaspaṃdarodhācca rāma cittarajaḥ kṣaṇāt| vāsanāprāṇapavanaspaṃdayoranayordvayoḥ || 63 ||

And Rama, when the throb of the breath is checked, the dust on the mind disappears in an instant. Of these two, the tendency and the throb of the life breath,

saṃvedyaṃ bījamityuktam sphuratastau yatastataḥ| hṛdi saṃvedyamāpyaiva prāṇaspaṃdo'tha vāsanā || 64 ||

the thing that is known is said to be their seed, since it is from that alone that the two of them keep springing up, wherever they arise. On reaching the known thing within the heart, the throb of the life breath and the tendency spring up.

udeti tasmātsaṃvedyaṃ kathitaṃ bījametayoḥ| saṃvedyasaṃparityāgātprāṇaspaṃdanavāsane || 65 ||

It rises from that alone. The known thing is declared to be the seed of these two. Once the known thing is completely given up, the throb of the life breath and the tendency,

samūlaṃ naśyataḥ kṣipraṃ mūlacchedādiva drumāḥ| saṃvidaṃ viddhi saṃvedyaṃ bījaṃ dhīratayā vinā || 66 ||

both die out completely and at once, the way a tree dies when its root is cut. Know that awareness itself, when it has no steadiness, becomes the seed called the known thing.

na bahirnāntare kiṃcit saṃvedyaṃ vidyate pṛthak| na saṃbhavati saṃvedyaṃ tailahīnastilo yathā || 67 ||

Nothing that is known exists apart, neither outside nor inside. The known thing cannot exist on its own, just as sesame cannot exist without its oil.

saṃvitsphurantī saṃkalpātsaṃvedyaṃ paśyati svataḥ | svapne yathātmamaraṇaṃ tathā deśāntarasthitiḥ || 68 ||

Awareness, stirring through imagination, sees on its own the thing it knows, the way one sees one's own death in a dream, or finds oneself standing in some far off place.

svacamatkārayogena saṃvedyaṃ saṃvidas tathā | svavedanaṃ svasaṃkalpāt saṃvido yatra vartate || 69 ||

In the same way, through its own wonder, awareness brings about the thing it knows. Awareness experiences itself out of its own imagining, in whatever place it settles.

jagajjālamato bhāti tadidaṃ raghunandana | yathā bālasya vetālaḥ svasaṃkalpodbhavādbhavet || 70 ||

So this net of the world shines out from that, Rama, the way a ghost appears to a child, born from the child's own imagining.

puruṣatvaṃ yathā sthāṇoḥ saṃvedyaṃ saṃvidas tathā | yathā candrārkarashmīnāṃ daṇḍatā reṇutā tathā || 71 ||

The way a post seems to be a man, so is the thing known by awareness. The way the light of the sun and moon can look like a straight rod, or like fine dust, so it is.

yathā nausthācalaspandaḥ saṃvedyaṃ saṃvidas tathā | etanmithyā hi durjñānaṃ samyagjñānād vilīyate || 72 ||

The way, to someone sitting in a boat, the still bank seems to move, so is the thing known by awareness. This false, wrongly known thing dissolves through right knowledge.

rajjvāmiva bhujaṅgatvaṃ dvīndutvaṃ svīkṣitādivaśuddhaiva saṃvittrijagatsavedyaṃ nānyadastyalam || 73 ||

The way a rope seems to be a snake, the way one's own faulty sight shows two moons, so, only unclear awareness turns the three worlds into something known. There is nothing else at all.

ityantarniścayo rūḍhaḥ samyagjñānaṃ vidurbudhāḥpūrvaṃ dṛṣṭamadṛṣṭaṃ vā yadasyāḥ pratibhāsate || 74 ||

When this inner certainty becomes firmly settled, the wise call it right knowledge, no matter whether what then appears of this awareness was seen before or never seen.

saṃvidastatprayatnena mārjanīyaṃ vijānatātadamārjanamātraṃ hi mahāsaṃsārasaṃgatam || 75 ||

One who understands should cleanse awareness of this through effort. Merely failing to cleanse it is exactly what binds one to the great round of rebirth.

tatpramārjanamātraṃ tu mokṣa ityanubhūyatesaṃvedanamanantāya duḥkhāya jananātmane || 76 ||

But merely cleansing it away is what is felt as liberation itself. Awareness of things leads only to endless suffering, the very nature of being born again.

asaṃvittirajāḍyasthā sukhāyājananātmaneajaḍo galitānandastyaktasaṃvedano bhavaasaṃvedyaprabuddhātmā yastu sa tvaṃ raghūdvaha || 77 ||

A not knowing that is not dullness brings happiness and freedom from rebirth. Become one who is not dull, whose bliss flows freely, who has let go of the awareness of things. The one whose awakened self is not known through things, that is you, Rama.

śrīrāma uvāca | ajaḍaścāpyasaṃvittiḥ kīdṛśo bhavati prabho | asaṃvittau ca jāḍyaṃ tatkathaṃ vā vinivartate || 78 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, how can there be a not knowing that is also not dull? And in that not knowing, how does dullness go away?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yaḥ sarvatrānavasthāstho viśrāntāstho na kutracit | jīvo na vindate kiṃcidasaṃvidajaḍo hi saḥ || 79 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: The person who has no fixed place anywhere and rests nowhere at all grasps nothing. He is the one who is without the awareness of things, yet is not dull.

saṃvidvastudṛśālambo sa yasyeha na vidyate | so'saṃvidajaḍaḥ proktaḥ kurvankāryaśatānyapi || 80 ||

He who here has nothing to hold on to in seeing awareness as a thing, he is called one without the awareness of things yet not dull, even while he does hundreds of tasks.

saṃvedyena hṛdākāśo manāgapi na lipyate | yasyāsāvajaḍā saṃvijjīvanmuktaśca kathyate || 81 ||

He whose heart space is not touched even a little by the things he perceives, his awareness, free of dullness, is what we call liberated while still alive.

yadā na bhāvyate kiṃcin nirvāsanatayātmani | bālamūkādivijñānamiva ca sthīyate sthiram || 82 ||

When, being free of the tendency, nothing at all is any longer imagined within the self, and one remains as steady as the bare awareness of a baby or a mute person,

tadā jāḍyavinirmuktamacchavedanamātatam | āśritaṃ bhavati prājño yasmādbhūyo na lipyate || 83 ||

then the wise person rests in a clear, spread out awareness free of dullness, and from then on he is never tainted again.

samastavāsanātyāgī nirvikalpasamādhitaḥ | nīlatvamiva khātsphāra ānandaḥ saṃpravartate || 84 ||

For one who has given up every tendency, through concentration free of thought, a vast bliss arises on its own, the way blueness seems to spread from the sky.

yoginastatra tiṣṭhanti saṃvedanamasanvidaḥ | tanmayatvādanādyantaṃ tadapyantarvilīyate || 85 ||

Yogis remain fixed there, beyond the awareness that ordinary knowing has of things. Through their oneness with that which has no beginning and no end, even that bliss dissolves within.

gacchaṃstiṣṭhanspṛśañjighrannapi tena sa ucyate | ajaḍo galitānandastyaktasaṃvedanaḥ sukhī || 86 ||

Even while he walks, stands, touches or smells things, for that very reason he is called: not dull, one whose bliss flows freely, one who has let go of the awareness of things, and happy.

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya kaṣṭayā yatnaceṣṭayā | tara duḥkhāmbudheḥ pāramapāraguṇasāgara || 87 ||

Hold on to this way of seeing, through hard and steady effort, and cross to the far shore of the ocean of suffering, Rama, boundless ocean of good qualities.

yathā bījādbṛhadvṛkṣo vyoma vyāpnoti kālataḥ | tathaivedaṃ svasaṃkalpātsaṃvedyamasadutthitam || 88 ||

Just as a huge tree grows from a seed and in time comes to fill the sky, so too this world we perceive, though unreal, has risen out of one's own imagining.

yadā saṃkalpya saṃkalpya saṃvitsvaṃ vindate vapuḥ | tadāsya janmajālasya saiva gacchati bījatām || 89 ||

When awareness, by imagining again and again, comes to have a body of its own, that same awareness becomes the seed of this whole net of births.

janayitvātmanātmānaṃ mohayitvā punaḥpunaḥ | svayaṃ mokṣaṃ nayatyantaḥ saṃvitsvaṃ viddhi rāghava || 90 ||

Know this about awareness, Rama. It gives birth to itself, by itself. It deludes itself again and again. And in the end it leads itself to liberation, all on its own.

yadeva bhāvayatyēṣā tadeva bhavati kṣaṇāt | na bhavadbhūmikāmuktā samāyāti cirādvapuḥ || 91 ||

Whatever this awareness pictures, that very thing comes into being in an instant. It never steps outside the part it is playing, so its shape never takes long to appear.

devo nāsau suraḥ rakṣo yakṣaḥ kiṃ kinnaro janaḥ | ātmaivaādyavilāsinyā jagannāṭyaṃ pranṛtyati || 92 ||

That being is not a god, not a demigod, not a demon, not a yaksha, not a kinnara, not an ordinary person. It is the self alone that, through its own age old playfulness, dances out the drama of the world.

baddhvātmānaṃ ruditvā ca kośakārakṛmiryathā | cirātkevalatāmeti svayaṃ saṃvitsvabhāvataḥ || 93 ||

It is like the silkworm: it wraps itself up in its own thread and cries there, and after a long time, by its own nature, it comes out alone. In the same way, awareness too, after a long time, returns on its own, by its own nature, to its single, pure state.

jagajjaladhijālānāṃ saṃvijjalamalaṃ gatā | eṣaivāpūrvadikcakraṃ sphuratyadvyāditāṃ gatā || 94 ||

Awareness itself has become the water that fills the ocean-like worlds. This same awareness shines out freely, as a whole new space, in every direction.

dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ | ityasyā vīcayaḥ proktāḥ saṃvitsalilasantateḥ || 95 ||

The sky, the earth, the wind, space, the mountains, the rivers, the directions — all these are called the waves of this endless water that is awareness.

saṃvinmātraṃ jagatsarvaṃ dvitīyā nāsti kalpanā | ityeva samyagjñānena saṃvidgacchati nānyatām || 96 ||

The whole world is nothing but awareness; there is no second thing at all. Only with this complete understanding does awareness stay itself and never become something other.

yadā na vindate kiṃcits pandate na na vepate | svātmanyeva sthitiṃ yāti saṃvinno lipyate tadā || 97 ||

When awareness knows nothing else, when it neither stirs nor trembles, and rests only in itself, then it is untouched by anything.

athāsyāḥ saṃvido rāma sanmātraṃ bījamucyate | saṃvinmātrādudeyteṣā prākāśyamiva tejasaḥ || 98 ||

Now, Rama, the seed of this awareness is said to be pure being alone. This arises out of mere awareness, the way brightness arises out of light.

dve rūpe tatra sattāyā ekaṃ nānākṛti sthitam | dvitīyamekarūpaṃ tu vibhāgo'yaṃ tayoḥ śrṛṇu || 99 ||

Being has two forms. One exists as many different shapes. The other is a single form. Listen now to the difference between the two.

ghaṭatā paṭatā caiva tvattā matteti kathyate | sattārūpavibhāgena yattannānākṛti sthitam || 100 ||

Take words like potness, clothness, your-ness, my-ness — these come only from splitting up the one being into forms. This is the being that exists as many different shapes.

vibhāgaṃ tu parityajya sattaikātmatayā tatam | sāmānyenaiva sattāyā rūpamekamudāhṛtam || 101 ||

But set the division aside. Being spreads out as a single self through everything. This, taken only in its general sense, is called the one form of being.

viśeṣaṃ saṃparityajya sanmātraṃ yadalepakam | ekarūpaṃ mahārūpaṃ sattāyāstarpadaṃ viduḥ || 102 ||

Leave aside every particular thing. What remains is pure being alone, untouched by anything. The wise call this the single form, the great form, the true state of being.

rūpaṃ nānākṛtitvena sattāyā na kadācana | asaṃvedyaṃ saṃbhavati tasmādetadavastukam || 103 ||

The manifold form of being is never something that cannot be known — it is always just an object that is known. So this manifold form has no reality of its own.

ekarūpaṃ tu yadrūpaṃ sattāyā vimalātmakam | na kadācana tadyāti nāśaṃ nāpi ca vismṛtim || 104 ||

But the single, pure form of being is never destroyed, and it is never even forgotten.

kālasattā kalāsattā vastusatteyamityapi | vibhāgakalanāṃ tyaktvā sanmātraikaparo bhava || 105 ||

There is the being of time, the being of a part, and the being of a thing — such distinctions exist too, but set aside the making of these divisions, and hold only to pure being alone.

kālasattā svasattā ca pronmuktakalanā satī | yadyapyuttamasadrūpā tathāpyeṣā na vāstavī || 106 ||

The being of time, and the being of the individual self — even taken as whole, without any division, and even though they seem like the finest kind of being — even so, they are not the ultimate reality.

vibhāgakalanā yatra vibhinnapadadāyinī | nānātākāraṇaṃ dṛṣṭā tatkathaṃ pāvanaṃ bhavet || 107 ||

Wherever the making of divisions gives rise to separate positions, and is seen to be the very cause of this multiplicity, how could that ever be something pure?

sattāsāmānyamevaikaṃ bhāvayatsakalaṃ vapuḥ | paripūrṇaparānandī tiṣṭhābharitadigbharaḥ || 108 ||

See that the one shared being alone fills this whole body of the world. Then remain complete, full of the highest bliss, filling every direction.

sattā sāmānyamātrasya yā koṭiḥ kovideśvara | saivāsya bījatāṃ yātā tata eva pravartate || 109 ||

Best of the wise, the highest point of this one shared being becomes the seed of this world, and everything unfolds from that seed alone.

sattāsāmānyaparyante yattatkalanayojjhitam | padamādyamanādyantaṃ tasya bījaṃ na vidyate || 110 ||

At the very limit of this shared being, there is a state free of all construction — the first state, without beginning or end. That state itself has no seed; nothing causes it.

sattā layaṃ yāti yatra nirvikāraṃ ca tiṣṭhati | bhūyo nāvartate duḥkhe tatra labdhapadaḥ pumān || 111 ||

There is a state where being itself dissolves, and what remains stands unchanging. A person who reaches that state never falls back into suffering again.

taddhetuḥ sarvahetūnāṃ tasya heturna vidyate | saṃsāraḥ sarvasārāṇāṃ tasmātsāraṃ na vidyate || 112 ||

That state is the cause of every cause, and it has no cause of its own. It is the essence of the whole cycle of the world, and beyond it there is no further essence.

tasmiṃściddarpaṇe sphāre samastā vastudṛṣṭayaḥ| imāstāḥ pratibimbanti sarasīva taṭadrumāḥ || 113 ||

In that vast mirror of consciousness, every view of every object is reflected — the way trees standing on the bank are reflected in a lake.

sarve bhāvā ime tatra svadante sādhuvāridheḥ| ṣaḍrasā iva jihvāyāḥ prakaṭatvaṃ prayānti ca || 114 ||

All these things are savored there, in that fine ocean, and come out into view, just as the six flavors show themselves on a tongue.

tasmādacchatarasyāpi cidākāśasya vai padam sarveṣāṃ svādujātīnāmalamāsvādanaṃ ca tat || 115 ||

So the state of that space of consciousness, clearer than anything, is itself the full tasting of every kind of flavor there is.

jāyate vartate caiva vardhate spṛśyate’tha vā| tiṣṭhanti ca galantīha tatrāṅga jagatāṃ gaṇāḥ || 116 ||

My friend, all the multitudes of worlds are born there, exist there, grow there, are touched there, stand there, and melt away there.

tattadguru garīṣṭhānāṃ tattallaghu laghīyasām| tattatsthūlaṃ sthaviṣṭhānāmaṇīyastadaṇīyasām || 117 ||

It is the heaviest of the heavy things, the lightest of the light things. It is the biggest of the big things, the smallest of the small things.

davīyasāṃ daviṣṭhaṃ tadantikānāṃ tadantikam | kanīyasāṃ kanīyastattajjyeṣṭhaṃ jyāyasāmapi || 118 ||

It is the farthest of the far things and the nearest of the near things. It is the youngest of the young and the eldest of the great.

tejasāmapi tattejastamasāmapi tattamaḥ | vastūnāmapi tadvastu diśāmapyanga dikparā || 119 ||

It is the light within all lights, and the darkness within all darkness. It is the thing within all things. My friend, it is the farthest direction within all directions.

tanna kiṃcicca kiṃcicca tattadasīva nāsti ca | tattaddṛśyamadṛśyaṃ ca tattadasmi na cāsmi ca || 120 ||

It is nothing, and yet it is something. It seems to exist, and yet it does not exist. It is seen, and it is unseen. It is 'I am,' and it is 'I am not.'

rāma sarvaprayatnena tasminparamapāvane | pade sthitimupāyāsi yathā kuru tathānagha || 121 ||

Rama, put your whole effort into reaching a steady place in that supremely pure state. Do whatever is needed to reach it, sinless one.

tadamalamajaraṃ tadātmatattvaṃ tadavagatāvupaśāntimeti cetḥ | avagatavitataikatatsvarūpo bhavabhayamuktapado'si taccirāya || 122 ||

That is stainless and never grows old; that is the true nature of the self. The mind finds peace once it understands this. Once you have understood this one nature spread through everything, you will be free from the fear of worldly existence, and you will remain that, forever.
