2

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya vicāraparayā dhiyā saṃsārasāgarādasmatāratamyena saṃtara || 2 ||

English

Holding onto this vision with a mind focused on inquiry, cross over this ocean of worldly existence with the means of liberation.

English

Now, O Rama, listen to this other vision, which grants the ultimate state, narrated by the sage Vītahavya, by which the unquestionable state is established.

vītahavyo mahātejā vibabhrāma vane purāvindhyaśailadarīrdīrghā ravirmerudarīriva || 5 ||

English

The great sage, free from doubts, wandered in the forest long ago, like the sun moving through the long valleys of the Vindhya mountains.

There, on the pure and level seat spread with deer skin, he rested like a rainless cloud on a peaceful mountain.

9

बद्धपद्मासनस्थौ पार्ष्ण्योरधिकराङ्गुलिःशृङ्गवच्छान्तचलनमतिष्ठत्स्पष्टकन्धरम् || ९ ||

bāhyānābhyantarāṃścaiva sparśānparijahatkramātidamākalayāmāsa manasā vigatainasā || 11 ||

English

He gradually abandoned both external and internal sensations, and thus he contemplated with a mind free from sin.

aho nu cañcalamidaṃ pratyāhṛtamapi kṣaṇāt | na manaḥ sthairyamāyāti taraṅgaprauḍhaparṇavat || 12 ||

English

Alas, this mind is indeed restless; even when restrained, it does not attain steadiness in a moment, like a leaf tossed by the waves.

cakṣurādibhiruddāmai rūpairāhitasaṃbhramaiḥ | ajasramutpatatyeva vīṭeva talatāḍitā || 13 ||

English

Due to the intense forms perceived by the senses, the mind is constantly agitated, like a ball repeatedly struck.

tyajadevānugṛhṇāti vṛttīrindriyavardhitāḥ | yasmānnivāryate tasmin pronmatta iva dhāvati || 14 ||

English

When one abandons the senses, the mind, which is nourished by sensory activities, becomes agitated and rushes towards them like a mad person.

ghaṭātpaṭamupāyāti paṭācchakaṭamutkaṭam | cittamartheṣu carati pādapeṣviva markaṭaḥ || 15 ||

English

The mind moves from one object to another, just like a monkey jumping from one tree to another.

pañcadvārāṇi manasaścakṣurādīnyamūnyalam | dagdhendriyābhidhānāni tāvadālokayāmyaham || 16 ||

English

I now observe the five senses, which are the doors of the mind, and which are referred to as the burning senses.

he he hatendriyagaṇāḥ kiṃ me bodhāya neha vaḥ | velā vilulitāmbūnāmabdhīmiva cañcalāḥ || 17 ||

English

Oh, you senses, why do you not awaken me? You are restless like the waves of the ocean.

mā kurudhvamanarthāya cāpalaṃ capalāśayāḥ | smaratātītavṛttīni duḥkhajālāni bhūriśaḥ || 18 ||

English

Do not act in a way that is not beneficial, O restless-minded ones. Remember the past actions that have caused much suffering.

rūpāṇi manaso yūyaṃ jaḍā eva kilādhamāḥ | jaḍe tūtsiktatā vyarthe mṛgatṛṣṇeva valgati || 19 ||

English

You are merely forms of the mind, inert and inferior. Desire for the inert is useless, like a mirage.

asārātmasvarūpāṇāmanālokavatī sadā | andhānāmuddhatiryeyaṃ sā dṛśyāyaiva jāyate || 20 ||

English

The essence of those without substance is always without light. This arrogance of the blind is only for display.

cidātmā bhagavānsarvaṃ sākṣitvena karomyaham | hatendriyagaṇā yūyaṃ kiṃ nirarthakamākulāḥ || 21 ||

English

I, the divine self, witness everything. O senses, why are you confused and useless?

mithyaiava me vivalganti nīrūpā nayanādayaḥ | alātacakrapratimāḥ sarparajjubhramopamāḥ || 22 ||

English

The sense organs, such as the eyes, appear to me as false, like the illusory circle of a whirling torch or the mistaken perception of a snake in a rope.

tenātmanā bahujñena nirjñātāścakṣurādayaḥ | manāgapi na saṃbandho dyupātālatalādrvat || 23 ||

English

By that self-knowing wise person, the sense organs like the eyes are known to have no connection, just like the sky, the underworld, and the mountains.

bhītaḥ pāntha ivāhibhyaḥ pukkasebhya iva dvijaḥ | dūre tiṣṭhati cinmātramindriyebhyastvanāmayam || 24 ||

English

Like a traveler afraid of snakes or a Brahmin afraid of outcastes, the pure consciousness stands far away from the sense organs, free from defects.

citsattāmātrakeṇālaṃ saṃkṣobho bhavatāṃ mithaḥ | tiṣṭhati svairamāditye dinakāryavatāmiva || 25 ||

English

The mere existence of pure consciousness is sufficient for the mutual disturbance of beings. It stands independently like the sun performing its daily duties.

citta cāraṇa cārvāka caturdikkukṣibhikṣuka | śveva vyarthamanarthāya maivam vihara he jagat || 26 ||

English

O world, do not wander aimlessly like the mind, the wandering mendicant, the materialist, the beggar in all directions, or the dog. It is useless and leads to harm.

ahaṃ cidvaditi vyarthamasatyā tava vāsanā | atyantabhinnayoraiykaṃ nāsti cinmanasoḥ śaṭha || 27 ||

English

The notion that 'I am conscious' is false and useless, O foolish one! There is no unity between the mind and consciousness, which are entirely distinct.

jīvāmyevāhamityeṣā tavāhaṃkāradurmatiḥ | mithyaiva jātā duḥkhāya na satyā satyavarjitā || 28 ||

English

This notion 'I am the individual self' is your foolish egoistic thought. It is false and born of ignorance, leading only to suffering, not truth, devoid of reality.

ahaṃkārodaye so'smītyetāṃ saṃrabdhatāṃ tyaja | na kiṃcidapi mūrkha tvaṃ kiṃ vyarthaṃ taralāyase || 29 ||

English

Abandon this stubbornness born of the ego's rise, thinking 'I am that.' O foolish one, why do you waver uselessly? You are nothing.

saṃvicchittvamanādyantaṃ saṃvido'nyannavidyate | dehesmiṃstanmahāmūrkha kiṃ tvaṃ syāścittanāmakam || 30 ||

English

Consciousness is eternal, without beginning or end. There is nothing other than consciousness. O great fool, why do you consider yourself to be the mind in this body?

viṣaparyavasāneyaṃ rasāyanavadutthitā | bhoktṛtākartṛtāśaṅkā bata citta mudhaiva hi || 31 ||

English

This doubt about being the doer and enjoyer arises like poison, born of the elixir of the mind. O mind, it is indeed foolish.

mopahāsapadaṃ gaccha mūrkhendriyagaṇāśrayam | na kartā tvaṃ na bhoktā tvaṃ jaḍo'syanyena bodhyase || 32 ||

English

Go to the state of mockery, the abode of foolish senses | You are neither the doer nor the enjoyer, you are inert and can only be known by another

kastvaṃ bhavasi bhogānāṃ ke vā bhogā bhavanti te | jaḍasyātmaiva te nāsti bandhumitrādi tatkutaḥ || 33 ||

English

Who are you in the enjoyment of pleasures? What are the enjoyments that you have? For the inert, there is no self, so how can there be relatives and friends?

yajjaḍaṃ taddhi nāstveva sadevāsattayānvitam | jñatvakartṛtva bhoktṛtvamanyatvānāmasaṃbhavāt || 34 ||

English

That which is inert does not truly exist, it is only perceived as real due to its association with existence. The qualities of knowledge, doership, enjoyership, and otherness do not truly exist.

pratyakcetanarūpaścetttvaṃ tadātmaiva te vapuḥ | bhāvābhāvamayī cittasattā te keva duḥkhadā || 35 ||

English

If you are the form of inner consciousness, then that is your true self. The existence of the mind, which is full of being and non-being, is only a cause of suffering.

yathā kartṛtva bhoktṛtve mithyaivādhigate tvayā | mayā te hi pramārjyete śṛṇu yuktyā kathaṃ śanaiḥ || 36 ||

English

Just as you have falsely understood doership and enjoyership, I will gradually explain to you with reasoning how they should be cleansed.

svayaṃ tāvadbhavaṃneṣa jaḍo nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ | jaḍasya kīdṛkkartṛtvaṃ nṛtyantīha kathaṃ śilāḥ || 37 ||

English

You yourself are indeed inert, there is no doubt about it. How can inert objects like stones dance here?

upajīva ciraṃ tasmācchuddhaṃ tadbhāgamaiśvaram | jīvasīcchasi haṃsi tvaṃ vṛthā yāsi vivalgasi || 38 ||

English

You have long depended on that pure divine part. You desire to live, you laugh, you wander aimlessly, you are confused.

kriyate yattu yacchaktyā tattenaiva kṛtaṃ bhavet | lunāti dātraṃ puṃśaktyā lāvakaḥ procyate pumān || 39 ||

English

Whatever is done by any power, it is done by that power alone. The sickle cuts by the power of the reaper, the reaper is called a man.

hanyate yastu yacchaktyā sa tenaiva hato bhavet | nihanti khaḍgaḥ puṃśaktyā hantaiva procyate pumān || 40 ||

English

English

Whoever drinks by any power, it is drunk by that power alone. The drink is drunk by the vessel, the drinker is called a man.

prakṛtyevāsi sujaḍaḥ samastajñena bodhyase | tenātmaivātmanātmānaṃ cinotīdaṃ hi no bhavat || 42 ||

English

You are like nature, ignorant, and can be understood by the omniscient. By that, the self itself realizes the self. This indeed is our nature.

anārataṃ bodhayati tvāmātmā parameśvaraḥ | bodhanīyā budhairmūḍhāḥ kilāvṛttiśatairapi || 43 ||

English

The Supreme Self constantly enlightens you. The ignorant should be enlightened by the wise, even with hundreds of efforts.

ātmasattai va bodhaikarūpiṇī sphuratīha hi | tayaiva cittaśabdārthāvaṅgīkṛtya tvayā sthitam || 44 ||

English

The existence of the self is the sole form of knowledge that shines here. By that, the meanings of the words 'mind' and 'thought' are accepted by you.

Thus, the mind, which has come to you due to ignorance of the self's power, is dissolved in knowledge like ice in the intense heat of the sun.

English

If you are of pure consciousness, O fool, then from that supreme state | You are eternally inseparable, why do you grieve for anything else

satyavalokanaj jate cittajadyadrisho kshaye | sampadyate yattu tajjam svasamvedanamatrakam || 56 ||

English

From the realization of truth, the destruction of the perception of the inert mind occurs. What arises then is the pure self-awareness.

57

English

What kind of doership is the mind? How can a flower exist in the sky? In the mud, free from oscillations, it has the form of the destruction of thought || 76 ||

English

Just as the ocean shines with foam, bubbles, and waves, the self shines in every appearance as pure consciousness.

dvitīyā nāsti kalanā taptāṅgāra ivāmbudhau| kalanārahite deve dehe manasi vā jaḍe || 79 ||

English

There is no second entity in the self, just as there is no second entity in a red-hot iron ball in the ocean. In the self, which is devoid of any division, there is no body, mind, or inert matter.

English

Thus, there is no false imagination, just as there is no forest in the sky. This is pure consciousness devoid of the known. How can there be a false notion of 'I am this' and 'I am that'?

English

In the eternal, all-encompassing essence of all objects, established in pure consciousness, filled with the unbearable burden of directions, in the Self, which is as if unreal, having attained purity, my delusion of happiness and sorrow has diminished.
