15.81.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ vicārya buddhvāntaḥ punaritthaṃ vicāryate | tattvavidbhirmahābāho jñeya ātmā mahātmabhiḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having thought this over and understood it within himself, one thinks it over again in this way. O mighty-armed one, the self is what the great souls who know the truth must come to know.

ātmaivedaṃ jagaditi satyaṃ cittena mārjitam | utthitaṃ syātkutaścittamaho cittamavastu yat || 2 ||

The truth that this world is nothing but the self is what the mind, in its reflection, arrives at. But then where could this mind itself have come from? Ah, the mind is a thing that does not really exist at all.

avidyatvādacittatvānmāyātvāccāsadeva hi | dhruvaṃ nāstyeva vā cittaṃ bhramādanyatkhavaṛkṣavat || 3 ||

Because it comes from ignorance, because it is not really a thing of awareness, and because it is only illusion, it is indeed unreal. The mind certainly does not exist as anything other than confusion, like a tree in the sky.

siddhaḥ sthāṇuparispando naugatasya yathā śiśoḥ | abuddhasya na buddhasya tathā cittamasantmayam || 4 ||

A child sitting in a boat sees a fixed post on the bank as if it were moving. This happens for someone unaware, not for someone who understands. In the same way, the mind, which is made of the unreal, seems real only to the one who does not understand, not to the one who does.

maurkhyamohabhrame śānte cittaṃ nopalabhāmahe | cakrārohabhramasyaante parvataspandanaṃ yathā || 5 ||

Once the confusion of foolish delusion has settled, we find no mind there at all, just as, when the dizziness from riding on a spinning wheel ends, the feeling that the mountain is shaking also ends.

evaṃ hi cittaṃ nāstyeva brahmaivāsti tathātmakam | padārthabhāvanāścittāttenāsatyā mayojjhitāḥ || 6 ||

So the mind does not exist at all. Only brahman exists, and it has that same nature as the self. The ideas of separate things that come from the mind are unreal for this very reason, and I have thrown them away.

jāto'smi śāntasaṃdehaḥ sthito'smi vigatajvaraḥ | tathā tiṣṭhāmi tiṣṭhāmi tathaiva vigataiṣaṇam || 7 ||

I have become someone whose doubts are at rest. I now stand free of that inner fever. I remain like this, I remain like this, with every craving gone.

cittābhāve parikṣīṇā bālyatṛṣṇādayo guṇāḥ | ālokoparame citrā varṇākhyā iva saṃvidaḥ || 8 ||

When the mind is gone, the qualities that begin with a child's craving all wear away completely, just as, when the light goes out, the awareness of a picture's many colors goes with it.

mṛtaṃ cittaṃ gatā tṛṣṇā prakṣīṇo mohapañjaraḥ | nirahaṃkāratā jātā jāgratyasminprabuddhavān || 9 ||

The mind has died, craving is gone, the cage of delusion has crumbled away, and freedom from ego has come. I have awakened, fully aware, right within this waking state.

ekameva jagacchāntaṃ nānātvaṃ na sadityapi | kimanyadvimṛśāmyantaḥ kathayaivālametayā || 10 ||

The world is one alone and at peace. There is no multiplicity in it either. What more is left for me to ponder within? Just say it plainly, enough of this endless questioning.

nirābhāsam anādyantaṃ padaṃ pāvanam āgataḥ | saumyaḥ sarvagataḥ sūkṣmaḥ sthita ātmāsmi śāśvataḥ || 11 ||

I have reached the state that has no appearance, no beginning and no end, the pure state. I am the self: gentle, present everywhere, subtle, steady, and everlasting.

yad asti yac ca nāstīha cittādyātmādyavastu ca | tat khādacchataraṃ śāntamanantāgrāhyam ātatam || 12 ||

Whatever exists and whatever does not exist in this world, including notions of mind and notions of self, none of these are real things. That truth is clearer than the sky, is at peace, has no end, cannot be grasped, and stretches through all things.

cittaṃ bhavatu mā vāntarmriyatāṃ sthitimetu vā | ko vicāraṇayārtho meṃ ciraṃ sāmyoditātmanaḥ || 13 ||

Let the mind exist or not exist, let it die within me or let it remain. What use is there for me in reasoning any further, since my very self has long since risen into perfect balance?

vicārākārako maurkhyādahamāsaṃ mitasthitiḥ | vicāreṇāmitākāraḥ kva nāmāhaṃ vicārakaḥ || 14 ||

Out of foolishness I became someone shaped by inquiry, a being of limited standing. Through that same inquiry I became boundless in form. So where, then, am I, the one who was inquiring?

mṛte'pi manasīyaṃ meṃ vikalpaśrīrnirarthikā | manovetālavṛttyarthaṃ kimarthamupajāyate || 15 ||

Even though the mind is dead, this pointless wealth of thoughts and doubts still comes to me. Why does it keep appearing, only to keep the mind moving like a corpse stirred by a ghost?

tāmimāṃ prajahāmyantaḥ saṃkalpakalanāmiti | nirṇīyomiti śāntātmā tiṣṭhāmyātmani maunavat || 16 ||

I give up, within myself, this whole business of forming intentions and thoughts. Having settled this with Om, my mind at peace, I remain within myself in silence.

aśnangacchansvapaṃstiṣṭhanniti rāghava cetasā | sarvatra prajñayā tajjñaḥ pratyahaṃ pravicārayet || 17 ||

While eating, while walking, while sleeping, while sitting still, in all these, Rama, a person who knows this truth should reflect on it with wisdom, everywhere, every day, within their mind.

pravicārya svasaṃsthena svasthena svena cetasā | tiṣṭhanti vigatodvegaṃ santaḥ prakṛtakarmasu || 18 ||

Having reflected in this way, with a mind that rests calmly in itself and stands on its own, good people go about their ordinary daily work without any anxiety or disturbance.

vigatamānamadā muditāśayāḥ śaradupoḍhaśaśāṃkasamatviṣaḥ | prakṛtasaṃvyavahāravihāriṇastvihi sukhaṃ viharanti mahādhiyaḥ || 19 ||

Free of pride and arrogance, joyful at heart, glowing like the clear autumn moon, taking part in the ordinary business of daily life, these great-minded ones live happily right here in this world.
