Sri Vasishtha said: for the wise man who considers this deeply within himself, desire for pleasures never arises at all, dear one, even when those pleasures stand right in front of him.
The eye exists only to see. The living self exists only to feel pleasure and pain. The ox exists only to carry the load. It is the master who enjoys the goods.
When the eye sinks itself into a shape, what real disturbance does that bring to the person who owns it? When a donkey sinks into a puddle of mud, what real harm does that do to the army's commander?
By this same power a person counts things, and by this same power he tastes them and runs after them. By his own actions, this clever man is quickly tied down and turned harsh.
O eye, do not cling to a shape. It arises only to be destroyed, it feels pleasant only for the first instant, and it is made of nothing real. You are undying, so do not walk into your own destruction.
O eye, you stand there only as a witness. The shape rests within itself. The seeing of it comes and goes only because of time, so why do you alone burn over it?
Seeing is like the trembling of water, like a tuft of feathers risen into the sky. It flickers only according to its own nature. O mind, what has come over you?
Like a little fish darting in the flood waters at the end of an age, the sense of I flickers up all by itself within the mind, since the mind's own nature is to flicker. Where have you, risen up like this, come from?
Light and shape are both always lifeless, only flickering against each other, one holding the other the way a container holds what is inside it. O mind, your confusion over them is for nothing.
Shape, light, and the mind's attention have no bond with each other at all, yet they look as if they have come together, like a face's likeness in a mirror.
It is by the creature of ignorance that these three have become fused, seeming unbroken. But once ignorance is swallowed up by knowledge, they stand apart, shown to be made of nothing real.
The thread is nothing but the mind thinking about itself, spun with effort by the mind's own habit. Careful inquiry cuts that thread, and once it is cut, the very feeling of ignorance is cut away with it.
O mind, you strut about for nothing. I have already seen through you completely. You are worthless at your start and at your end, and you are dying even now, in this very moment.
Why do you leap about inside, for nothing, wearing five different shapes? You can only prance about in front of someone who thinks you are his own self.
tvadvālganaṃ me kumano na manāgapi tuṣṭaye | māyāmanaḥspanda iva vyarthaṃ vṛttiṣu dahyase || 19 ||
O wicked mind, your antics do not please me even a little. Like the trembling of a mind that illusion has made up, you burn yourself up for nothing in your own passing moods.
tiṣṭha vā gaccha vā citta nāsi me na ca jīvasi | prakṛtyāsi mṛtaṃ nityaṃ vicārātsumṛtaṃ smṛtam || 20 ||
Stay or go, mind. You are not mine, and you are not even alive. By your very nature you are always dead, and careful inquiry shows that you are truly, thoroughly dead.
nistattvaṃ tvaṃ jaḍaṃ bhrāntaṃ śaṭhaṃ nityamṛtākṛte | mūḍha eva tvayājñena bādhyo na pravicāravān || 21 ||
You have no substance in you. You are lifeless, confused, and deceitful, you whose very shape is forever dead. Only a fool without knowledge is troubled by you, never someone of clear discernment.
Out of sheer foolishness, we failed to know that you were dead all along. But now, for us, you are dead, the way darkness is dead once the lamps are lit.
pūrvamevāsi nāsīstvaṃ saṃpratyeva śaṭhaṃ jagat | na bhaviṣyasi cedānīṃ vetāla kiṃ na lajjase || 25 ||
You did not exist before, and you do not exist now either, you are just a cheat, a false world. You will not exist after this either. Ghost, are you not ashamed?
What courage do you have? What strength do you have? What shelter do you have? If you try to strut in front of me, remember, among people you can only torment a dead body.
Luckily, after a long time, the mind-ghost, who had risen up huge and wild like a palm tree, has at last been struck down, badly wounded by the sword of reflection, and thrown out of the house of the heart.
To the One who has done all that had to be done, who is eternal, whose self is pure, who is called undivided consciousness, to myself alone, salutation, salutation.

na śoko'sti na moho'sti na caivāhamahaṃ svayaṃ | naca nāhaṃ nacānyo'haṃ mahyameva namo namaḥ || 41 ||
There is no grief, there is no delusion, and I myself am not even I. I am not not-I either, nor am I someone else. To myself alone, salutation, salutation.
na mamāśā na karmāṇi na saṃsāro na kartṛtā | na bhoktṛtā na deho me mahyameva namo namaḥ || 42 ||
I have no desire, no actions, no wandering through this world, no doership. I have no experiencership, no body. To myself alone, salutation, salutation.
I am not a separate self, nor is there anyone else. I am not this, and I am not other than this. I am everything. To this very self, to myself alone, salutation, salutation.
To the changeless, the eternal, the partless, the great self, to the all, to that which spans all time, to myself alone, salutation, salutation.
To the formless, the nameless, the shining one, the great self, who rests alone in himself alone, to myself alone, salutation, salutation.
samāṃ sarvagatāṃ sūkṣmāṃ jagadekaprakāśinīm sattāmupagato'smyantarmahyameva namo namaḥ || 47 ||
I have inwardly come to that being which is equal everywhere, all-pervading, subtle, the one light of the whole world. To myself alone, salutation, salutation.
This world, with its mountain, its ocean, its earth, its river, whether it is myself or not myself, this whole world, full of countless things, to myself alone, salutation, salutation.
I bow to that imperishable Lord, who is my own true form, free of all thought, beautiful in his perfect stillness, who has brought the whole universe into view and yet is not the universe, endless, himself unborn, unaging, beyond the three qualities.
