अस्त्यस्तमितसर्वापदुद्यत्संपदुदारधीः | विदेहानां महीपालो जनको नाम वीर्यवान् || १ ||

astyastamitasarvāpadudyatsaṃpadudāradhīḥ | videhānāṃ mahīpālo janako nāma vīryavān || 1 ||

English

There was a king named Janaka, who was wise, prosperous, and free from all misfortunes. He was the ruler of Videha and was known for his valor.

हिन्दी

विदेह के राजा जनक थे, जो सभी विपदाओं से मुक्त, समृद्धि से युक्त और उदार बुद्धि वाले थे। वे वीर्यवान थे।

कल्पवृक्षोऽर्थिसार्थानां मित्रालानां दिवाकरः | माधवो बन्धुपुष्पाणां स्त्रीणां मकरकेतनः || २ ||

kalpavṛkṣo'rthisārthānāṃ mitrālānāṃ divākaraḥ | mādhavo bandhupuṣpāṇāṃ strīṇāṃ makaraketanaḥ || 2 ||

English

He is like a wish-fulfilling tree for the needy, a sun for the friendless, a spring season for the relatives, and a love-god for the women.

हिन्दी

वह गरीबों के लिए कल्पवृक्ष के समान है, मित्रहीनों के लिए सूर्य के समान है, रिश्तेदारों के लिए वसंत ऋतु के समान है, और स्त्रियों के लिए कामदेव के समान है।

द्विजकैरवशीतांशुर्द्विपत्तिमिरभास्करः | सौजन्यरत्नजलधिर्भुवं विष्णुरिवास्थितः || ३ ||

dvijakairavaśītāṃśurdvipattimirabhāskaraḥ | saujanyaratnajaladhirbhuvam viṣṇurivāsthitaḥ || 3 ||

English

He is like the cool moonlight for the twice-born, a sun that dispels the darkness of dual afflictions, an ocean of the jewel of kindness, and stands on the earth like Vishnu.

हिन्दी

वह द्विजों के लिए ठंडी चाँदनी के समान है, द्वंद्व के अंधकार को दूर करने वाले सूर्य के समान है, दया के रत्न के समुद्र के समान है, और पृथ्वी पर विष्णु के समान स्थित है।

प्रफुल्लवाललतिके मञ्जरीपुञ्जपिञ्जरे | स कदाचिन्मधौ मत्ते कोकिलालापलासिनि || ४ ||

praPhullavālalatike mañjarīpuñjapiñjare | sa kadācinmadhau matte kokilālāpalāsini || 4 ||

English

Once, in the spring season, when the cuckoos were singing sweetly in the blooming creepers and clusters of flowers.

एक बार, वसंत ऋतु में, जब खिले हुए लताओं और फूलों के झुंडों में कोयल मधुर स्वर में गा रही थी।

ययौ कुसुमिताभोगंसुविलासलताङ्गनम् | लीलयोपवनं कान्तं नन्दनं वासवो यथा || ५ ||

yayau kusumitābhogaṃsuvilāsalatāṅganam | līlayopavanaṃ kāntaṃ nandanaṃ vāsavo yathā || 5 ||

English

He went to a delightful garden, adorned with blooming flowers and charming creepers, resembling the Nandana garden of Indra.

हिन्दी

वह एक आनंदमय उद्यान में गया, जो खिले हुए फूलों और मनमोहक लताओं से सजा हुआ था, और जो इंद्र के नंदन उद्यान के समान था।

तस्मिन्वरवने हृद्ये केसरोद्दाममारुते| दूरस्थानुचरः सानुकुञ्जेषु विचचार ह || ६ ||

tasminvaravane hṛdye kesaroddāmamārute| dūrasthānucaraḥ sānukuñjeṣu vicacāra ha || 6 ||

English

In that delightful forest, with the breeze carrying the fragrance of pollen, he wandered in the distant mountain valleys.

हिन्दी

उस हृदयविभोर वन में, जहाँ हवा में केसर की सुगंध फैली हुई थी, वह दूर के पहाड़ी घाटियों में भटकता रहा।

अथ शुश्राव कस्मिंश्चित्तमालवनगुल्मके| सिद्धानामप्रदृश्यानां स्वप्रसङ्गादुदाहृताः || ७ ||

atha śuśrāva kasmiṃścittamālavanagulmake| siddhānāmapradṛśyānāṃ svaprasaṅgādudāhṛtāḥ || 7 ||

English

Then he heard in a certain part of the Tāmāla forest grove, the words of the invisible Siddhas, spoken from their own context.

हिन्दी

फिर उसने तामाल वन के एक झुंड में, अदृश्य सिद्धों के शब्द सुने, जो उनके अपने संदर्भ से कहे गए थे।

विविक्तवासिनां नित्यं शैलकन्दरचारिणाम्| इमाः कमलपत्राक्ष गीता गीतात्मभावनाः || ८ ||

viviktavāsināṃ nityaṃ śailakandaracāriṇām| imāḥ kamalapatrākṣa gītā gītātmabhāvanāḥ || 8 ||

English

These songs, O lotus-eyed one, are always sung by those who dwell in solitude and roam in the mountain caves, immersed in the essence of the song.

हिन्दी

हे कमलनयन, ये गीत हमेशा उनके द्वारा गाए जाते हैं जो एकांत में रहते हैं और पहाड़ी गुफाओं में घूमते हैं, गीत की आत्मा में डूबे हुए।

सिद्धा ऊचुः| द्रष्टृदृश्यसमायोगात्प्रत्ययानन्दनिश्चयः| यस्तं स्वमात्मतत्त्वोत्थं निःस्पन्दं समुपास्महे || ९ ||

siddhā ūcuḥ| draṣṭṛdṛśyasamāyogātpratyayānandaniścayaḥ| yastaṃ svamātmatattvotthaṃ niḥspandaṃ samupāsmahe || 9 ||

English

The Siddhas said: From the union of the seer and the seen arises the certainty of the bliss of realization. We worship that which is motionless, arising from the essence of one's own self.

हिन्दी

सिद्ध ने कहा: देखने वाले और देखे जाने वाले के संयोग से आनंद की निश्चयात्मक प्रतीति उत्पन्न होती है। हम उसकी उपासना करते हैं जो निश्चल है, अपने आत्मतत्त्व से उत्पन्न है।

अन्ये ऊचुः| द्रष्टृदर्शनदृश्यानि त्यक्त्वा वासनया सह| दर्शनप्रथमाभासमात्मानं समुपास्महे || १० ||

anye ūcuḥ| draṣṭṛdarśanadṛśyāni tyaktvā vāsanayā saha| darśanaprathamābhāsamātmānaṃ samupāsmahe || 10 ||

English

Others said: Having abandoned the seer, the act of seeing, and the seen, along with the impressions, we worship the self, which is the first reflection of perception.

हिन्दी

दूसरे ने कहा: देखने वाले, देखने की क्रिया, और देखे जाने वाले को, साथ ही संस्कारों को त्यागकर, हम उस आत्मा की उपासना करते हैं जो प्रत्यक्षण का पहला प्रतिबिंब है।

anye ūcuḥ | dvayormadhyagataṃ nityamastināstīti pakṣayoḥ | prakāśanaṃ prakāśyānāmātmānaṃ samupāsmahe || 11 ||

English

Others say: We worship the Self, which is the eternal manifestation of the two aspects, existence and non-existence, and the illumination of the illuminable.

हिन्दी

दूसरे कहते हैं: हम उस आत्मा की उपासना करते हैं जो अस्तित्व और अनस्तित्व के दो पक्षों के मध्य में नित्य रूप से स्थित है और जो प्रकाशित करने योग्य है।

अन्ये ऊचुः | यस्मिन्सर्वं यस्य सर्वं यतः सर्वं यस्मायिदम् | येन सर्वं यद्धि सर्वं तत्सत्यं समुपास्महे || १२ ||

anye ūcuḥ | yasmin sarvaṃ yasya sarvaṃ yataḥ sarvaṃ yasmāyidam | yena sarvaṃ yaddhi sarvaṃ tatsatyaṃ samupāsmahe || 12 ||

English

Others say: We worship that which is the truth, in which all exists, from which all comes, by which all is pervaded, and to which all returns.

हिन्दी

दूसरे कहते हैं: हम उसकी उपासना करते हैं जो सत्य है, जिसमें सब कुछ है, जिससे सब कुछ उत्पन्न होता है, जिससे सब कुछ व्याप्त है, और जिसमें सब कुछ लौटता है।

अन्ये ऊचुः | अशिरस्कं हकारान्तमशेषाकारसंस्थितम् | अजस्रमुच्चरन्तं स्वं तमात्मानमुपास्महे || १३ ||

anye ūcuḥ | aśiraskaṃ hakārāntamaśeṣākārasaṃsthitam | ajasramuccaranataṃ svaṃ tamātmānamupāsmahe || 13 ||

English

Others say: We worship the Self, which is headless, ending in 'ha', situated in all forms, and constantly uttering its own sound.

हिन्दी

दूसरे कहते हैं: हम उस आत्मा की उपासना करते हैं जो सिर रहित है, 'ह' से समाप्त होता है, सभी रूपों में स्थित है, और निरंतर अपनी ध्वनि को उच्चारित करता है।

अन्ये ऊचुः | संत्यज्य हृद्गुहेशानं देवमन्यं प्रयान्ति ये | ते रत्नमभिवाञ्छन्ति त्यक्तहस्तस्थकौस्तुभाः || १४ ||

anye ūcuḥ | saṃtyajya hṛdguheśānaṃ devamanyaṃ prayānti ye | te ratnamabhivāñchanti tyaktahastasthakauṣtubhāḥ || 14 ||

English

Others say: Those who abandon the Lord of the heart's cave and go to other deities, they desire a jewel, having left the Kaustubha jewel in their hands.

हिन्दी

दूसरे कहते हैं: जो हृदय के गुहा के ईश्वर को छोड़कर दूसरे देवताओं की ओर जाते हैं, वे एक रत्न की इच्छा करते हैं, हाथ में कौस्तुभ रत्न को छोड़कर।

अन्ये ऊचुः | सर्वाशाः किल संत्यज्य फलमेतदवाप्यते | येनाशाविषवल्लीनां मूलमाला विलूयते || १५ ||

anye ūcuḥ | sarvāśāḥ kila saṃtyajya phalametadavāpyate | yenāśāviṣavallīnāṃ mūlamālā vilūyate || 15 ||

English

Others say: By abandoning all desires, this fruit is attained, by which the root of the poisonous creeper of desires is destroyed.

हिन्दी

दूसरे कहते हैं: सभी इच्छाओं को छोड़कर यह फल प्राप्त होता है, जिससे इच्छाओं की विषैली लता की जड़ नष्ट हो जाती है।

अन्ये ऊचुः | बुद्ध्वाप्यत्यन्तवैरस्यं यः पदार्थेषु दुर्मतिः | बध्नाति भावनां भूयो नरो नासौ स गर्दभः || १६ ||

anye ūcuḥ | buddhvāpyatyantavairasyaṃ yaḥ padārtheṣu dumatiḥ | badhnāti bhāvanāṃ bhūyo naro nāsau sa gardabhaḥ || 16 ||

English

Others said: Even after understanding the extreme enmity, the one who has a bad mind towards objects and binds the imagination again, that man is not a donkey.

हिन्दी

दूसरे बोले: अत्यंत वैर को समझने के बाद भी जो व्यक्ति वस्तुओं के प्रति बुरा विचार रखता है और कल्पना को फिर से बाँधता है, वह व्यक्ति गधा नहीं है।

अन्ये ऊचुः | उत्थितानुत्थितानेतानिन्द्रियाहीन्पुनः पुनः | हन्याद्विवेकदण्डेन वज्रेणेव हरिर्गिरीन् || १७ ||

anye ūcuḥ | utthitānutthitānetānindriyāhīnpunaḥ punaḥ | hanyādvivekadaṇḍena vajreṇeva harirgirīn || 17 ||

English

Others said: One should repeatedly destroy the senses, whether they are active or inactive, with the weapon of discrimination, just as Indra destroys mountains with his thunderbolt.

हिन्दी

दूसरे बोले: चाहे इन्द्रियाँ सक्रिय हों या निष्क्रिय, उन्हें बार-बार विवेक के अस्त्र से नष्ट कर देना चाहिए, जैसे इंद्र अपने वज्र से पर्वतों को नष्ट करते हैं।

अन्ये ऊचुः | उपशमसुखमाहरेत्पवित्रं सुशमवतः शममेति साधुचेतः | प्रशमितमनसः स्वके स्वरूपे भवति सुखे स्थितिरुत्तमा चिराय || १८ ||

anye ūcuḥ | upaśamasukhamāharetpavitraṃ suśamavataḥ śamameti sādhucetaḥ | praśamitamanasaḥ svake svarūpe bhavati sukhe sthitiruttamā cirāya || 18 ||

English

Others said: One should bring the joy of peace, which is pure, from a peaceful mind. The good-minded person attains peace. For those whose minds are calmed, there is an excellent and enduring state of happiness in their own nature.

हिन्दी

दूसरे बोले: एक शांत मन से शुद्ध शांति का सुख लाना चाहिए। सद्बुद्धि वाला व्यक्ति शांति प्राप्त करता है। जिनके मन शांत होते हैं, उनके स्वभाव में एक उत्तम और स्थायी सुख की स्थिति होती है।
