Just as a round whirlpool appears out of the stirring of water, looking like something separate from the water, so the world appears out of the vibration of the mind, looking like something separate from it.
Just as, when the eye trembles, circles like peacock feathers and strings of pearls appear in the sky, unreal though they look real, so the world too, though unreal, looks real, because of the mind's vibration.
in just the same way, Raghava, the mind and its vibration are joined together. Between these two, the mind and the vibration of the mind, they are not separate. The difference between them is only imagined, and false.
Between these two, the mind and the vibration of the mind, if just one of the pair comes to an end, both end together, since by their own nature they stand as a quality and the thing that has the quality. There is no doubt about this.
Sri Rama said: When, in what manner, and by what method, the one called yoga, which controls prana and apana, does the mind reach that peace which gives endless happiness?
Sri Vasishtha said: In this body, the air that pulses everywhere in the body's channels, the way water on the ground trembles in ripples, that is called prana.
Because of its pulsing, it takes on a variety of functions within the body. The names apana and the rest have been given to it by those who have mastered themselves.
From the vibration of prana comes the vibration of consciousness, and from that very vibration come waves of awareness that swirl into circles and whirlpools, just like waves from the stirring of water.
Those who are masters of the scriptures say that the mind is nothing but the vibration of prana. When that vibration is held in check, the mind surely becomes calm.
When the vibration of the mind is calmed, this whole cycle of worldly existence dissolves, just as, when the movement of sunlight stops, all worldly business comes to a stop.
Sri Rama said: The breaths, prana and the rest, move ceaselessly in the house of the body, roaming through empty space. How can their vibration be stopped?
Sri Vasishtha said: Through contact with scripture and good people, and through the practice of dispassion, when disregard has grown for one's former habits of worldly life,
From meditating on one's chosen object until it becomes, over a long time, a single unbroken state, from this intense practice of dwelling on one single reality, the vibration of prana is checked.
From the steady, effortless practice of controlling the breath, beginning with inhalation, and from joining this with one-pointed meditation, the vibration of prana is checked.
From dwelling on the true nature of sound at the point where the chanting of Om fades into silence, when an awareness like deep, dreamless sleep arises, the vibration of prana is checked.
When exhalation is well mastered, and prana, spreading wide, passes into space without touching the body's openings again, the vibration of prana is checked.
When inhalation is well mastered, and prana, filled in, becomes as steady and solid as a mountain, moving in complete calm, the vibration of prana is checked.
In breath retention, remaining still like a sealed pot for what feels like endless time, when, through practice, prana is made completely motionless, the vibration of prana is checked.
By deliberately pressing the tongue against the uvula, the little bell of flesh at the root of the palate, and so directing prana into the upper passage, the vibration of prana is checked.
When, through meditation, awareness dissolves into that subtle emptiness called nothing at all, free of every thought and construct, the vibration of prana is checked.
When the seeing awareness, fixed on the clear space twelve finger-widths out from the tip of the nose, becomes completely calm, the vibration of prana is checked.
Through practice, when prana, moving by the upper passage above the palate to the point twelve finger-widths above the head, dissolves and is drawn fully within, the vibration of prana is checked.
Between the eyebrows, when the inner starlight grows still and fades to its end, and the seat of awareness is fully known, the throb of the breath comes to a stop.
The awareness that springs up in an instant — when a person stays firmly fixed in it, in the part that no thought clings to, the throb of the breath comes to a stop.
O sage, when for a long time the heart holds the awareness of that lovely emptiness, and the mind, free of all desire, stays absorbed in that meditation, the throb of the breath comes to a stop.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca sādho jagati bhūtānām hṛdayam dvividham smṛtam upādeyam ca heyaṃ ca vibhāgo'yam tayoḥ śṛṇu || 33 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Good man, in this world the heart of living beings is said to be of two kinds — one to be kept and one to be given up. Listen now to how the two differ.
In the body, which has a fixed size and shape, the hollow space inside the chest — know this as the heart that is to be given up, sitting at just one place in the body.
So, when a person's inner impressions are stripped away and the mind is firmly fixed in the pure heart that is consciousness itself, the throb of the breath comes to a stop.
By these ways, and other ones too, shaped by many different intentions and found at the various bends and turns spread through the body, the throb of the breath is stopped.
When it has grown firm through practice and is marked by true dispassion, the control of the breaths, carried out according to one's own inner leanings, is said to bear fruit.
At the points twelve finger-widths away, resting at the eyebrows, the nose, and the palate — through practice the breath grows calm, the way a mountain river grows quiet far away.
Again and again, through long practice, the tip of the tongue touches the little bell at the back of the palate, and by this the breath is made to flow strongly upward.
These states of deep absorption, though at first full of many thoughts, quickly become free of all thought through one's own practice, for the sake of the highest peace.
The throb of the breath is simply a form the mind takes; from it comes the whirl of worldly life. When that alone comes to rest, the fever of worldly life is ended.
When a creature's thought-constructs are worn away, only that one state remains — the state from which words, with all they try to grasp, turn back and cannot reach.
It is the place where everything exists, the source everything comes from, the thing that is everything, and the thing present in everything everywhere. It is also where this world is not, the source this world does not come from, the thing this world is not — this world is nothing like it.
vināśitvādvikalpatvādguṇitvān nirguṇātmanaḥ | yasya no sadṛśo dṛṣṭo dṛṣṭāntaḥ kaścideva hi || 51 ||
Because everything else perishes, is caught up in thought, and carries qualities, none of it can match the one whose own nature has no qualities — for this, truly, no fitting comparison has ever been found.
The wise person who takes hold of this state, the outermost limit of everything, and stands firm in it with a steady mind, truly knowing it — that person is called free while still alive.
The finest of men, with a mind set free, loses all eagerness for anything he might pursue, lets go completely of every idea of what helps and what harms, and stays even-minded through all his dealings.
