Sri Vasishtha said: I have already described, in many ways, the marks of one who is freed while still living. Listen once more, O mighty armed one, as I tell it again.
He who has given up all craving, and has realized the Self, always sees this whole world as unreal, everywhere, like something in deep sleep, even though it seems so absorbing.
One who has gained sight of the Self remains as if he has reached final freedom, as if his mind were fully asleep, swaying like a drunk man, yet full of bliss.
Seeing the whole bustle of people as nothing but puppets moving on strings, watching it with a gaze turned inward and absorbed, the man of peaceful mind smiles.
Within, he has let go of everything, and he is always free of inner craving. Even while performing his outward duties, he remains exactly the same throughout.
Outwardly he carries on all the ordinary activities of life, turning to whatever action comes his way, and he keeps up the duties toward his family that come to him in the natural course of his own work.
His whole being enjoys every kind of happiness, and he seems to live amid every desire. He performs all actions, but the illusion that he is their doer has left him.
udāsīnavadāsīnaḥ prakṛtaḥ kramakarmasunābhivāñchati na dveṣṭi na śocati na hṛṣyati || 12 ||
He sits like someone unconcerned, going about his usual round of actions, he does not crave, does not hate, does not grieve, and does not rejoice.
Toward a person caught up in worldly ties, his mind stays free of attachment, with someone devoted, he acts as one devoted himself, and with a cunning person, he behaves as though he too were cunning.
Among children he is a child, among old people he is old, among the composed he is full of composure, among the young behaving as the young do, he is young, and among the sorrowful, he shares their sorrow.
His words flow into wholesome talk, his mind has let go of all misery, his understanding stays steady while his joy keeps rising, he is gentle, and he speaks in praise of what is good.
He is wise, pleasant and gentle in speech, complete in the rising of his own insight, all sorrow and misfortune have left him, and he is as warm as a loving kinsman to everyone.
His whole bearing shows noble conduct, he is even tempered, an ocean of gentle happiness, deeply affectionate, cool to the touch, like a full moon risen in the sky.
na kāryakāraṇārambhairna niṣkṛtatayā tathā | na bandhena na mokṣeṇa na pātālena nodivā || 19 ||
He has no need to begin actions for their effects, nor for any act of atonement, no need for bondage, no need for liberation, no need for the netherworld, no need for heaven.
ghūrṇankṣīva ivānandī mandībhūtapunarbhavaḥanupādeyabuddhyā tu na smaratyakṛtaṃ kṛtam || 24 ||
He sways like a drunk man, yet he is full of joy; for him being born again has grown weak and faint. With a mind that holds on to nothing, he does not keep count of what he has done or left undone.
Even while he stays busy with tasks, moving through their places, times and steps of action, he is not touched even a little by the pleasure or pain those tasks bring.
bahiḥ prakṛtasarvārtho'pyantaḥ punaraniḥayā | na sattāṃ yojayatyarthe na phalānyanudhāvati || 27 ||
Outwardly he is occupied with every kind of object, but inwardly he is free of any striving; he does not attach his being to the object, and he does not run after its results.
nopēkṣatē duḥkhadaśāṃ na sukhāśāmapēkṣatē | kāryōdayē naiti mudaṃ kāryanāśē na khidyatē || 28 ||
He does not dwell on a state of suffering, and he does not look for any hope of happiness. When a task succeeds he feels no joy, and when it fails he feels no grief.
api śītarucāvarke sutaptē'pīndumaṇḍalē | apyadhaḥ prasaratyagnau vismayo'sya na jāyatē || 29 ||
Even if the sun turned cool and its light lost all heat, even if the moon's disc grew burning hot, even if fire spread downward instead of up, he would feel no surprise.
He knows that these are simply the powers of the conscious self flashing out in this way; and so, amid all the wonders of this world, no curiosity rises in him.
na dayādainyamādatte na krauryamanudhāvati na lajjāmanusaṃdhatte nālajjatvaṃ ca gacchati || 31 ||
He does not take on the misery that comes with pity, and he does not run after cruelty. He does not hold on to a sense of shame, and he does not fall into shamelessness either.
na kadācana dīnātmā noddhatātmā kadācana na pramatto na khinnātmā nodvigno na ca harṣavān || 32 ||
He is never downcast, and he is never proud. He is never careless, never troubled in mind, never anxious, and never overjoyed.
In his mind, spread out wide and clear like the autumn sky, anger and its kin do not arise, just as fresh shoots cannot sprout in the sky.
It is like foam hurrying along in fast-moving water, and the passing procession of created beings is the same. Where, then, is anything fixed here? From where, and how, could pleasure and pain have any hold on it?
Through endless, ceaseless coming into being and going out of it, creature after creature keeps appearing; but the man who has understood that seeing itself is the making of the world is not worn away by this, and does not arise from it either.
These feelings of suffering take on a life of their own once the good is gone and happiness is absent. But what are they really, how did they come about, and where indeed are they now?
This feeling of suffering rises only when a feeling of happiness ends, and then it keeps sowing its own seed further. But this same feeling of suffering has now gone quiet, so once happiness itself has vanished, how could it still be there?
kṣīṇābhyāṃ sukhaduḥkhābhyāṃ heyopādeyayoḥ kṣaye | īpsitānīpsite kva sto galite'tha śubhāśubhe || 41 ||
Once happiness and suffering have both faded away, once the very ideas of what to reject and what to accept have died out, where then are the wanted and the unwanted? And once good and bad themselves have melted away, where are they too?
When the very sight of the pleasant and the unpleasant is destroyed, when the longing for enjoyment is gone, and when this freedom from desire grows steady and full, the mind melts away like snow.
āmūlānmanasi kṣīṇe saṃkalpasya kathā ca kā | tileṣvivātidagdheṣu tailasya kalanā kutaḥ || 43 ||
When the mind has been destroyed right down to its root, what is there left to say about thought and intention? It is like sesame seeds burnt to nothing. Where, then, would you find any oil in them?
Amid all things that exist, seeing them as thick with non-being, the great soul cuts loose every tie to them; they stand there for him like empty sky. Toward his own mind he is glad in himself, one same being spread through everything; such a knower stays, sleeps, and lives, always content.
