श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । ब्रह्मणः समुपायान्ति जगन्तीमानि राघव । स्थैर्यं यान्त्यविवेकेन शाम्यन्त्येव विवेकतः || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | brahmaṇaḥ samupāyānti jagantīmāni rāghava | sthairyam yāntyavivekena śāmyantyeva vivekataḥ || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O Raghava, all these worlds approach Brahman. They attain stability due to ignorance and are pacified through discrimination.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे रघुनन्दन, ये सभी जगत् ब्रह्म की ओर बढ़ते हैं। वे अज्ञान के कारण स्थिर होते हैं और विवेक के द्वारा शान्त हो जाते हैं।

जगज्जालजलावर्तवृत्तयो ब्रह्मवारिधौ । संख्यातुं केन शक्यन्ते भासां च त्रसरेणवः || २ ||

jagajjālajalāvartavṛttayo brahmavāridhau | saṃkhyātuṃ kena śakyante bhāsāṃ ca trasareṇavaḥ || 2 ||

English

The whirlpools of the world's illusions in the ocean of Brahman, who can count them? And the ripples of appearances?

हिन्दी

ब्रह्म के सागर में जगत् के भ्रम के भंवर, उन्हें कौन गिन सकता है? और प्रतीतियों के तरंगों को?

असम्यक्प्रेक्षणं विद्धि कारणं जगतः स्थितौ । संसारशान्तये कान्त कारणं सम्यगीक्षणम् || ३ ||

asamyakprekṣaṇaṃ viddhi kāraṇaṃ jagataḥ sthitau | saṃsāraśāntaye kānta kāraṇaṃ samyagīkṣaṇam || 3 ||

English

Know that incorrect perception is the cause of the world's existence. O beloved, the cause of the world's peace is correct perception.

हिन्दी

जानो कि असही दृष्टि जगत् के अस्तित्व का कारण है। हे प्रिय, सही दृष्टि जगत् की शान्ति का कारण है।

अयं हि परदुष्पारो घोरः संसारसागरः । विना युक्तिप्रयत्नाभ्यामस्माद्राम न तीर्यते || ४ ||

ayaṃ hi paraduṣpāro ghoro saṃsārasāgaraḥ | vinā yuktiprayatnābhyāmasmādrāma na tīryate || 4 ||

English

Indeed, this ocean of the world is very difficult to cross and terrible. Without effort and means, O Rama, one cannot cross it.

हिन्दी

निश्चय ही, यह जगत् का सागर अत्यन्त कठिन और भयंकर है। हे राम, प्रयत्न और साधनों के बिना इसे पार नहीं किया जा सकता।

यस्यायं सागरः पूर्णो मोहाम्बुभरपूरितः । अगाधमरणावर्तकल्लोलाकुलकोटरः || ५ ||

yasyāyaṃ sāgaraḥ pūrṇo mohāmbubharapūritaḥ | agādhamarṇāvartakallolākulakoṭaraḥ || 5 ||

English

This ocean is full of the water of delusion, filled with deep whirlpools and turbulent waves.

हिन्दी

यह सागर भ्रम के जल से भरा हुआ है, गहरे भंवरों और उथले तरंगों से भरा हुआ है।

प्रभ्रमत्पुण्यडिण्डीरो ज्वलन्नरकवाडवः | तृष्णाविलोललहरिर्मनोजलमतङ्गजः || ६ ||

prabhramatpuṇyaḍiṇḍīro jvalannarakavāḍavaḥ | tṛṣṇāvilolalaharirmanojalamataṅgajaḥ || 6 ||

English

The mind, like an unsteady boat of merit, is a burning whirlpool of hell | The mind, agitated by desires, is like a restless wave, an elephant in the lake of the mind.

हिन्दी

मन पुण्य के अस्थिर नाव के समान है, जो नरक का ज्वलन्त भंवर है | इच्छाओं से विचलित मन एक अस्थिर लहर के समान है, मन के सरोवर में हाथी के समान।

आलीनजीवितसरिद्भोगरत्नसमुद्गकः | क्षुब्धरोगोरगाकीर्ण इन्द्रियग्राहघर्घरः || ७ ||

ālīnajīvitasaridbhogaratnasamudgakaḥ | kṣubdharogoragākīrṇa indriyagrāhaghargharaḥ || 7 ||

English

The life-giving river of enjoyment, adorned with the jewels of pleasure, is filled with agitated serpents of disease | The senses, like a roaring crocodile, are overwhelmed by desires.

हिन्दी

भोग की जीवनदायी नदी, जो सुख के रत्नों से अलंकृत है, रोगों के उत्तेजित सर्पों से भरी हुई है | इन्द्रियाँ, इच्छाओं से भरी, एक गर्जन करते मगरमच्छ के समान हैं।

पश्यास्मिन्प्रसृता राम वीचयश्चारुचञ्चलाः | इमा मुग्धाङ्गनानाम्न्यः शिखराकर्षणक्षमाः || ८ ||

paśyāsmiṃprasṛtā rāma vīcayaścārucañcalāḥ | imā mugdhāṅganānāmnyaḥ śikharākarṣaṇakṣamāḥ || 8 ||

English

See, O Rama, the beautiful and restless waves spread out in this | These are the naive young women capable of attracting the peaks.

हिन्दी

देखो, हे राम, इसमें फैली हुई सुंदर और अस्थिर लहरें | ये शिखरों को आकर्षित करने में सक्षम सरल युवतियाँ हैं।

छदश्रीपद्मरागाढ्या नेत्रनीलोत्पलाकुलाः | दन्तपुष्पफलाकीर्णाः स्मितफेनोपशोभिताः || ९ ||

chadaśrīpadmarāgāḍhyā netranīlotpalākulāḥ | dantapuṣpaphalākīrṇāḥ smitaphenopaśobhitāḥ || 9 ||

English

Adorned with the splendor of the lotus, rich with rubies, filled with blue lotuses in the eyes | Filled with the flowers and fruits of the teeth, beautified with the foam of the smile.

हिन्दी

कमल की शोभा से अलंकृत, माणिक से भरी, नेत्रों में नील कमलों से भरी | दाँतों के फूलों और फलों से भरी, मुस्कान के फेन से सुशोभित।

केशेन्द्रनीलवलया भ्रूविलासतरङ्गिताः | नितम्बपुलिनस्फीताः कण्ठकम्बुविभूषिताः || १० ||

keśendranīlavalayā bhrūvilāsataraṅgitāḥ | nitambapulinasphītāḥ kaṇṭhakambuvibhūṣitāḥ || 10 ||

English

Adorned with the garland of blue sapphires, with the waves of the eyebrows' grace | With the expanded hips, adorned with the conch shell of the throat.

हिन्दी

नीलम के हार से अलंकृत, भौंहों के लहरों की शोभा से सुशोभित | नितम्बों से भरी, कण्ठ के शंख से विभूषित।

ललाटमणिपट्टाढ्या विलासग्राहसंकुलाः | कटाक्षलोलगहना वर्णकाञ्चनवालुकाः || ११ ||

lalāṭamaṇipaṭṭāḍhyā vilāsagrāhasaṅkulāḥ | kaṭākṣalolagahanā varṇakāñcanavālukāḥ || 11 ||

English

Their foreheads adorned with jewels, full of playful grace, with deep, playful glances, and with golden ornaments.

हिन्दी

उनके माथे मणियों से सजे हुए हैं, खेल के आनंद से भरे हुए हैं, गहरे खेल के नज़रों से और सोने के आभूषणों से सजे हुए हैं।

एवं विलोललहरीभीमात्संसारसागरात् | उत्तीर्यते चेन्मग्नेन तत्परं पौरुषं भवेत् || १२ ||

evaṃ vilolalaharībhīmātsaṃsārasāgarāt | uttīryate cenmagnen tatparaṃ pauruṣaṃ bhavet || 12 ||

English

Thus, if one crosses the terrifying ocean of worldly existence with its playful waves, that is the supreme human effort.

हिन्दी

इस प्रकार, यदि कोई संसार सागर के खेल के लहरों से भरे भयानक सागर को पार करता है, तो वह उत्तम मानवीय प्रयास है।

सत्यां प्रज्ञामहानावि विवेके सति नाविके | संसारसागरादस्माद्यो न तीर्णो धिगस्तु तम् || १३ ||

satyāṃ prajñāmahānāvi viveke sati nāvike | saṃsārasāgarādasmādyo na tīrṇo dhigastu tam || 13 ||

English

In the true boat of wisdom, with discrimination as the navigator, one who has not crossed this ocean of worldly existence is to be pitied.

हिन्दी

सत्य के ज्ञान के बड़े नाव में, विवेक के साथ नाविक के रूप में, जो इस संसार सागर को पार नहीं कर पाया है, उसे दया की दृष्टि से देखा जाना चाहिए।

अपारावारमाक्रम्य प्रमेयीकृत्य सर्वतः | संसाराब्धिं गाहते यः स एव पुरुषः स्मृतः || १४ ||

apārāvāramākramya prameyīkṛtya sarvataḥ | saṃsārābdhiṃ gāhate yaḥ sa eva puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ || 14 ||

English

He who, having crossed the boundless ocean of worldly existence, has measured it from all sides, is truly considered a man.

हिन्दी

जो सीमाहीन संसार सागर को पार कर चुका है और उसे सभी दिशाओं से माप चुका है, वही सच्चा मानव माना जाता है।

विचार्यार्यैः सहालोक्य धिया संसारसागरम् | एतस्मिंस्तदनु क्रीडा शोभते राम नान्यथा || १५ ||

vicāryāryaiḥ sahālokya dhiyā saṃsārasāgaram | etasmiṃstadanu krīḍā śobhate rāma nānyathā || 15 ||

English

Having considered with wise men and with the intellect, the ocean of worldly existence, only in this way does the play shine, O Rama, not otherwise.

हिन्दी

बुद्धिमान लोगों के साथ और बुद्धि से संसार सागर का विचार करने के बाद, हे राम, यही खेल चमकता है, किसी अन्य तरीके से नहीं।

इह भव्यो भवान्साधो विचारपरया धिया त्वयाधुनैव तेनायं संसारः प्रविचार्यते || १६ ||

iha bhavyo bhavānsādho vicāraparayā dhiyā tvayādhunaiva tenāyaṃ saṃsāraḥ pravicāryate || 16 ||

English

O wise one, with a mind focused on contemplation, you are now examining this world through that very contemplation.

हिन्दी

हे विद्वान, विचार में लगी बुद्धि से आप अब इस संसार का विचार कर रहे हैं।

17

भवानिव विचार्यादौ संसारमतिकान्तया मत्या यो गाहते लोको नेहासौ परिमज्जति || १७ ||

bhavāniva vicāryādau saṃsāramatikāntayā matyā yo gāhate loko nehāsau parimajjati || 17 ||

English

Just like you, one who initially examines the world with great delight through contemplation does not get entangled in it.

हिन्दी

जैसे आप, जो पहले विचार से संसार का आनंद लेकर उसका विचार करता है, वह उसमें उलझा नहीं जाता।

18

पूर्वं धिया विचार्यैते भोगा भोगिभयप्रदाः भोक्तव्याश्चरमं राम गरुडेनेव पन्नगाः || १८ ||

pūrvaṃ dhiyā vicāryaite bhogā bhogibhayapradāḥ bhoktavyāścaramaṃ rāma garuḍeneva pannagāḥ || 18 ||

English

O Rama, previously, through contemplation, one should examine the enjoyments that cause fear to the enjoyer. They should be enjoyed like a serpent being enjoyed by Garuda.

हिन्दी

हे राम, पहले, विचार से, भोगों का विचार किया जाना चाहिए जो भोगी को भय देते हैं। वे गरुड द्वारा सर्प की तरह भोगे जाने चाहिए।

विचार्य तत्त्वमालोक्य सेव्यन्ते या विभूतयः ता उदर्कोदया जन्तोः शेषा दुःखाय केवलम् || १९ ||

vicārya tattvamālokya sevyante yā vibhūtayaḥ tā udarkodayā jantoḥ śeṣā duḥkhāya kevalam || 19 ||

English

Those who, after contemplating and realizing the truth, worship the divine manifestations, they rise above. The rest remain only for suffering.

हिन्दी

जो विचार करके और सत्य को जानकर, दिव्य विभूतियों की पूजा करते हैं, वे ऊपर उठते हैं। शेष केवल दुःख के लिए रहते हैं।

बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च दृष्टतत्त्वस्य वर्धते सवसन्तस्य वृक्षस्य सौन्दर्याद्या गुणा इव || २० ||

balaṃ buddhiśca tejaśca dṛṣṭatattvasya vardhate savasantasya vṛkṣasya saundaryādyā guṇā iva || 20 ||

English

Strength, intelligence, and radiance increase for one who has realized the truth, just as the qualities of beauty and others increase in a tree in spring.

हिन्दी

बल, बुद्धि और तेज सत्य को जानने वाले के लिए बढ़ता है, जैसे वसंत ऋतु में पेड़ के सौंदर्य और अन्य गुण बढ़ते हैं।

घनरसायनपूर्णसुशीतया विमलया समया सततं श्रिया | शिशिररश्मिरिवातिविराजसे विदितवेद्य सुखं रघुनन्दन || २१ ||

ghanarasāyanapūrṇasuśītayā vimalayā samayā satataṃ śriyā | śiśiraraśmirivātivirājase viditavedya sukhaṃ raghunandana || 21 ||

English

O Raghunandana, you shine like the cool and pure rays of the moon, always filled with the nectar of bliss, known and experienced by the wise.

हिन्दी

हे रघुनन्दन, आप ऐसे चमकते हैं जैसे चन्द्रमा की ठंडी और शुद्ध किरणें, जो हमेशा आनंद के अमृत से भरी होती हैं, जिसे ज्ञानी लोग जानते और अनुभव करते हैं।
