evaṃvicārayā dṛṣṭyā dvaitatyāgena rāghavasvabhāvaḥ prāpyate tajjñaistajjñaiścintāmaṇiryathā || 1 ||

English

By reflecting in this way and by renouncing duality, O Raghava, one attains one's true nature, just as the wish-fulfilling gem is attained by those who know it.

athemāmaparāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ śrṛṇu rāmānayā yathādṛśyasyātmānamacalaṃ bhaviṣyasi ca divyadṛk || 2 ||

English

Now listen to this supreme vision, O Rama, by which you will see your immovable self and become a divine seer.

ahaṃ khamahamādityo diśo'hamahamapyadhaḥahaṃ daityā ahaṃ devā lokāścāhamahaṃ mahaḥ || 3 ||

English

I am the sky, I am the sun, I am the directions, I am also below, I am the demons, I am the gods, I am the worlds, I am the great.

ahaṃ tamo'hamabhrāṇi bhūḥ samudrādikaṃ tvahamrajo vāyurathāgniśca jagatsarvamidaṃ tvaham || 4 ||

English

I am the darkness, I am the clouds, I am the earth, I am the oceans and more, I am the dust, the wind, and the fire, and all this universe is me.

jagattraye'haṃ sarvatra ya ātmaiva kilāsthitaḥko'haṃ kimanyaddehādi dvitvamekasya kīdṛśam || 5 ||

English

In the three worlds, I am everywhere, that which is the self alone is established. Who am I? What is this duality of the body and the one? What kind is it?

iti niścayavānantarbhūtamātmatayā jagatpaśya harṣaviṣādābhyāṃ nāvaśaḥ paribhūyase || 6 ||

English

Thus, seeing the world as pervaded by the Self, you will not be overcome by joy or sorrow.

tanmaye'sminkila jagatyakhile saṃsthite'naghakimātmīyaṃ paraṃ kiṃ syātkamalekṣaṇa kathyatām || 7 ||

English

In this world, which is pervaded by That, what is the highest Self? O lotus-eyed one, please tell me.

kiṃ tajjñavyatirekeṇa vidyate yadupāgatamharṣametu viṣādaṃ vā viṣāde jño jaganmayaḥ || 8 ||

English

What exists apart from the knower of That? Whatever comes, let it be joy or sorrow, the knower of the world is unaffected.

ahaṃkāradṛśāvete sāttvike dve'tinirmaletattvajñānātpravartete mokṣade pāramārthike || 9 ||

English

These two views, arising from ego, are very pure in the mode of goodness and lead to the knowledge of reality, which is the ultimate liberation.

paro'ṇuḥ sakalātītarūpo'haṃ cetyahaṃkṛtiḥprathamā sarvamevāhamityanyoktā raghūdvaha || 10 ||

English

The ego, which says 'I am the supreme, the minute, beyond all, and I am everything,' is the first to be discarded, O Raghava.

ahaṃkāradṛganyā tu tṛtīyā vidyate'naghadeho'hamiti tāṃ viddhi duḥkhāyaiva na śāntaye || 11 ||

English

The third type of ego-centric view is the belief 'I am the body.' Know this to be the cause of suffering, not of peace.

atha caitattrayamapi tyaktvā sakalasiddhayeyaccheṣaṃ tadupālambya tiṣṭhāvaṣṭabdhatatparaḥ || 12 ||

English

Therefore, having abandoned these three views, remain steadfast in the pursuit of the ultimate goal, firmly established in that.

sarvātītasvarūpo'pi sarvasattātigo'pi caasattāpūritajagadastyevātmā prakāśakaḥ || 13 ||

English

Even though the self is beyond all attributes and all beings, it is the illuminator of the world filled with non-existence.

svānubhūtyaiva paśyāśu sa evāsi sadoditaḥāśayaṃ hṛdayagranthiṃ tyaja tattvavidāṃvara || 14 ||

English

Realize through your own experience quickly, that you are the ever-shining self. O best among the knowers of truth, abandon the knot of the heart.

English

O Rama, the self is not known through inference or the words of others. It is always and in every way directly experienced.

yadidaṃ sparśanaṃ spandaṃ kiṃcidyatsaṃvidādyapitatsarvamātmā bhagavāndṛśyadarśanavarjitaḥ || 16 ||

English

That which is touch, movement, and any perception, all of that is the Self, the Lord, who is beyond the seer and the seen.

English

That God is neither existent nor non-existent, neither small nor great, neither in the middle of the seer and the seen, but He is all this and everywhere.

English

He alone speaks thus, and He cannot be described. This is different, O son, see the Self which is free from disease.

nātmāyamayamapyātmā saṃjñābheda iti svayamtenaiva sarvagatayā śaktyā svātmani kalpitaḥ || 19 ||

English

This is not the Self, nor is it not the Self. It is a distinction in name only. By its own all-pervading power, it is imagined in the Self.

English

He is established everywhere in all three times, like the sun. Due to his subtlety and greatness, he is not perceived separately.

satsvanantapadārtheṣu jīvatvenābhibimbatiātmā puryaṣṭakādarśe svabhāvavaśataḥ svataḥ || 21 ||

English

The self (ātmā) reflects as the individual soul (jīva) in the objects of the world (satsvanantapadārtheṣu) due to its own nature (svabhāvavaśataḥ) and independently (svataḥ) in the mirror of the eight-fold city (puryaṣṭakādarśe).

puryaṣṭakodayādeva svayamātmānubhūyatesarvadā sarvasaṃsthaḥ khe ghanāspandādivānilaḥ || 22 ||

English

Through the rise of the eight-fold city (puryaṣṭakodayādeva), the self (ātmā) is experienced directly (svayamātmānubhūyate). It is always (sarvadā) and everywhere (sarvasaṃsthaḥ) like the wind (vānilaḥ) in the sky (khe) with dense (ghanā) and subtle (spandādi) movements.

cidātmā sarvago vyāpī na kvacinnāma saṃsthitaḥyadvatsarvapadārthānāṃ sattā tadvanmaheśvaraḥ || 23 ||

English

The conscious self (cidātmā) is all-pervading (sarvago) and omnipresent (vyāpī), not located anywhere specific (na kvacinnāma saṃsthitaḥ). Just as the existence (sattā) of all objects (sarvapadārthānāṃ) is due to the supreme lord (maheśvaraḥ), so is the self.

sati puryaṣṭake tasmiñjīvaḥ sphurati nopalesati vāyāviva rajaḥ sati dīpa ivekṣaṇam || 24 ||

English

When the eight-fold city (puryaṣṭake) exists (sati), the individual soul (jīvaḥ) shines (sphurati) and does not disappear (nopalesati). It is like dust (rajaḥ) in the wind (vāyāviva) and like the light (dīpa) of a lamp (ivekṣaṇam).

iyaṃ puryaṣṭake svecchā svātmanyevātmani sthitesati sphuratyabhyudite bhānāviva janaiṣaṇā || 25 ||

English

This desire (iyaṃ svecchā) in the eight-fold city (puryaṣṭake), situated in one's own self (svātmanyevātmani sthite), shines (sphuraty) when it arises (abhyudite), like the light (bhānāviva) of the sun (janaiṣaṇā).

yadi sūrye sthite vyomni tādṛśocitasaṃsthitiḥnaśyati vyavahāro'yaṃ bhāskare tatkimāgatam || 26 ||

English

If the sun were to cease to exist, the world would still function. What then is the significance of the sun?

yadyātmani sthite deve tatsattā labdhasaṃsthitiḥdeho nāśamupāyāti tatkiṃ naṣṭamihātmani || 27 ||

English

If the divine self is established within the ātman, then that existence is attained. The body perishes, but what is lost in the ātman?

na jāyate na mriyate nādatte nābhivāñchatina mukto na ca baddho'yamātmā sarvasya sarvadā || 28 ||

English

The self is never born, nor does it ever die. It does not take birth, nor does it desire. It is neither bound nor free. This self is eternal and all-pervading.

ātmāprabodhābhyuditā nirātmanyātmatāṃ gatāsarparajjubhramākārā bhrāntirduḥkhāya kevalam || 29 ||

English

The self is realized through self-awareness. The illusion of identifying with the non-self leads to suffering. This is like mistaking a rope for a snake.

anāditvānna jāto'yamajātatvānna naśyatiātmātmavyatiriktaṃ tu nābhivāñchatyasaṃbhavāt || 30 ||

English

The self is not born because it is beginningless. It does not die because it is unborn. The self does not desire anything other than itself because it is impossible.

dikkālādyanavacchedānna baddho'yaṃ kadācana bandhābhāve kva muktiḥ syādamokṣastena saṃsthitaḥ || 31 ||

English

Since this one is never bound by limitations of space, time, and the like, where is the question of liberation when there is no bondage? Thus, liberation is inherently established in him.

evaṃguṇaviśiṣṭo'yamātmā sarvasya rāghava avicāravaśānmūḍho loko'yaṃ pariroditi || 32 ||

English

O Rāghava, this Self, endowed with such qualities, belongs to all. Yet, due to lack of reflection, this deluded world obstructs it.

samyagālokitāśeṣapūrvāparajagatkramaḥ mā śokaṃ gaccha sumate maurkhyopagatalokavat || 33 ||

English

O wise one, having rightly seen the entire sequence of past and future worlds, do not grieve like those who are attached to delusion.

dve eva kalane tyaktvā mokṣabandhātmike yathā viduṣā vyavahartavyaṃ yantraṇevātmamauninā || 34 ||

English

Just as one abandons the two states of bondage and liberation, the wise should conduct themselves with the restraint of a machine and the silence of the Self.

na mokṣo nabhasaḥ pṛṣṭhe na pātāle na bhūtale mokṣo hi ceto vimalaṃ samyagjñānavibodhitam || 35 ||

English

Liberation is not on the surface of the sky, nor in the netherworld, nor on the earth. Liberation is indeed the pure consciousness awakened by right knowledge.

sakalāśāsvasaṃsaktyā yatsvayaṃ cetasaḥ kṣayaḥsa mokṣanāmnā kathitastattvajñairātmadarśibhiḥ || 36 ||

English

The destruction of one's own mind through complete detachment is called liberation by those who know the truth and see the self.

yāvatprabodho vimalo noditastāvadeva saḥmaurkhyāddīnatayā rāma bhaktyā mokṣobhivāñchyate || 37 ||

English

Until pure awakening is attained, one should desire liberation through devotion to Rama, with humility and simplicity.

paraṃ prabodhamāsādya citte cittattvatāṃ gatedaśa mokṣā na vāñchyante kimutaiko hi mokṣakaḥ || 38 ||

English

Having attained the supreme awakening, when the mind reaches the state of pure consciousness, liberation is not desired, let alone one type of liberation.

ayaṃ mokṣastvayaṃ bandhaḥ pelavāṃ kalanāmitiparityajya mahātyāgī sa tvameva bhavābhava || 39 ||

English

This is liberation, this is bondage; it is a mere trifle, a small distinction. Having abandoned it, you are the great renouncer, you are the existence and non-existence.

parigalitavikalpanāṃ prayātaḥ sagarasutaughanikhātamekhalāṅkamavanivalayamantarastasaṅgaściramanupālaya sarvadoditaśrīḥ || 40 ||

English

Having abandoned all doubts, go forth, adorned with the belt of the ocean's waves, and forever protect the earth, O ever-shining one.
