English

Vasishtha said: You are not born when the body is born, nor do you perish when the body perishes. You are the pure, unblemished Self, and the body is not yours.

yaḥ kuṇḍabadaranyāyo yā ghaṭākāśasaṃsthitiḥ | tatraikasminkṣate kṣīṇe dve iti vyarthakalpanā || 2 ||

English

The analogy of the pot and the space within it is like the analogy of the jasmine flower and its reflection. When one is destroyed, both are destroyed, which is a futile imagination.

vināśini vinaṣṭe'smindehe svāṃ sthitimāgate | vinaśyāmīti yaḥ khedī taṃ dhigastvandhacetasam || 3 ||

English

When this perishable body has reached its own state of destruction, one who grieves thinking 'I am destroyed' is indeed foolish.

yādṛśo raśmirathayoḥ snehoudevagavivarjitaḥ | sambandhastādṛśo dehacittendriyamukhaiściteḥ || 4 ||

English

Just as the relationship between the sun's rays and the chariot is devoid of affection and agitation, so is the relationship between the Self and the body, mind, and senses.

gate'taretarāpekṣaḥ sarḥpaṅkāmalāmbhasām | yathā rāghava sambandhastathā dehendriyātmanām || 5 ||

English

Just as the relationship between the lotus, mud, and water is one of mutual dependence, so is the relationship between the body, senses, and the Self.

yādṛśo'dhvā gatādhvānāṃ nirāsthāparidevanaḥ | saṃyogo viprayogaśca tādṛśo dehadehinoḥ || 6 ||

English

Just as the path traversed by travelers is devoid of attachment and lamentation, so is the union and separation of the body and the embodied soul.

yathā kalpitavetālavikārabhayabhītayaḥ | mithyāiva kalpitā ete tathā snehāsukhādayaḥ || 7 ||

English

Just as the fears created by an imagined ghost are false, so too are the affections and pleasures.

bhūtapañcakasaṃpiṇḍādracitā janatāḥ pṛthak | ekasmādeva viṭapādvicitrā iva putrikāḥ || 8 ||

English

People are created from the combination of the five elements, distinct like the varied leaves from a single tree.

kāṣṭhetaratkāṣṭhabhāre kiṃcidanyanna dṛśyate | bhūtapiṇḍetaraddehe kiṃcidanyanna dṛśyate || 9 ||

English

In a load of wood, nothing other than wood is seen. In the body, which is a lump of elements, nothing other than the elements is seen.

bhūtapañcakavikṣobhanāśotpādeṣu he janāḥ | harṣāmarṣaviṣādānāṃ kiṃ bhavanto vaśaṃ gatāḥ || 10 ||

English

O people, why are you subject to joy, anger, and sorrow in the transformations, destructions, and creations of the five elements?

ko nāmātiśayaḥ puṃsāṃ strīnāmnyaparanāmni ca | pelave bhūtasaṃghāte prodbhūtajanapātavat || 11 ||

English

What is the greatness in names, whether it is a man's name or a woman's name, in a small collection of elements that has arisen like a sudden downpour of people?

saṃniveśāṃśavaicitryamajñānāmeva tuṣṭaye | tajjñānāṃ tu yathābhūtabhūtapañcakadarśanam || 12 ||

English

The variety in the parts of the body is for the satisfaction of the ignorant. But the knowledge of the five elements as they truly are is for the wise.

mithaḥ śilāputrakayoryathaikopalaputrayoḥ | śliṣṭayorapi no rāgastathā cittaśarīrayoḥ || 13 ||

English

Just as there is no attachment between a stone and its son, or between a single grain and its son, even if they are closely connected, similarly, there is no attachment between the mind and the body.

mṛtpum̐sāṃ yādṛśo'nyonyamāśayaḥ saṃgame bhavet | buddhīndriyātmamanasāṃ saṃgame tādṛśo'stu te || 14 ||

English

Just as there is a certain mutual understanding between clay figures when they come together, let there be a similar understanding between the intellect, senses, self, and mind when they come together.

nānyonyasnehasaṃbandhabhājanaṃ śailaputrakāḥ | dehendriyātmaprāṇāśca kasyātra paridevanā || 15 ||

English

Stone figures do not have the bond of mutual affection. So, why should there be lamentation for the body, senses, self, and vital breath?

itashcetashca jātāni yathā saṃśleṣayantyalam | taraṅgāstṛṇajālāni tathā bhūtāni dehadṛk || 16 ||

English

Just as waves and networks of grass come together and dissolve, so do the elements in the body, O seer of the body.

saṃyujyante viyujyante tṛṇānyabdhijale yathā | muktāntaḥkalanaṃ dehe bhūtānyātmani vai tathā || 17 ||

English

Just as grasses unite and separate in the ocean water, so do the elements in the body unite and separate in the self.

ātmā cittatayā dehabhūtānyāśleṣayansthitaḥ | tṛṇānyāvṛttavṛttāntakalanotsiktamabdhivat || 18 ||

English

The self, through the mind, unites the elements of the body, just as grasses are tossed about in the ocean.

prabodhāccetyatāṃ tyaktvā vrajatyātmātmatāṃ svayam | svaspanḍavaśato vāri tyaktvācchatvamivācchatāṃ || 19 ||

English

Awakening and leaving behind the state of consciousness, the self attains its own nature, just as water leaves its liquid state due to its own vibration.

tato viśliṣṭabhūtaugho dehaṃ saṃprati paśyati | vāyuskandhagato janturvasudhāmaṇḍalaṃ yathā || 20 ||

English

Then, with the elements dissolved, one sees the body as it is, just as a being carried by the wind sees the globe of the earth.

pṛthagbhūtagaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā dehātīto bhavatyajaḥ | paraṃ prakāśamāyāti sūryakāntirivāhani || 21 ||

English

Upon seeing the distinct elements, the unborn one transcends the body and attains the supreme light, like the radiance of the sun in the sky.

jānātyathātmānātmānaṃ mānameyāmayojjhitam | muktakṣībataye'vāntaḥ svāṃ saṃvidamanusmaran || 22 ||

English

Then, one knows the self by the self, devoid of the measurer and the measured, like a freed nail, remembering one's own consciousness within.

ātmaiva spandate viśvaṃ vastujātairivoditam | taraṅgakaṇakallolairanantāmbvambudhāviva || 23 ||

English

The self alone vibrates as the universe, as if expressed by various objects, like the endless ocean with its waves, droplets, and billows.

evaṃprāyamahābodhā vītarāgā gataienasaḥ | jīvanmuktāścarantīha mahāsattvapadaṃ gatāḥ || 24 ||

English

Thus, the greatly enlightened ones, free from desires and sins, live as liberated souls in this world, having attained the state of great beings.

yathā caranti vividhairmaṇiratnairmahormayaḥ | nirastavāsanāścittavyavahāraistathottamāḥ || 25 ||

English

Just as various precious gems move with great waves, similarly, the supreme ones move with mental activities free from desires.

na kūlakāṣṭhairjaladhirna rajobhirnabhastalam | na mlāyati nijairlokavyavahārairihaatmavān || 26 ||

English

The ocean is not sullied by the wood on its shores, nor is the sky sullied by dust. Similarly, the self is not affected by worldly affairs.

gatairabhyāgataiḥ svacchaiścapalairmalinaírjadaiḥ | na rāgo nāmbudherdveṣo bhogaiścādhigatātmanaḥ || 27 ||

English

The one who has realized the self has no attachment or aversion to the various states of beings, whether they are pure, impure, active, or inactive.

yanmanomananaṁ kiñcit samagraṁ jagati sthitaṁ | tacchetyonmukhacittatvavilāsollasanaṁ viduḥ || 28 ||

English

Whatever is contemplated by the mind, everything that exists in the world, is known to be the manifestation of the pure consciousness that is turned towards the self.

yadahaṁ yacca bhūtādi kālatritayabhāvi yat | dṛśyadarśanasambandhavistāraistadvijṛmbhate || 29 ||

English

Whatever is the self, whatever is the origin of beings, whatever exists in the threefold time, all these manifest through the expansion of the relationship between the seer and the seen.

yadṛśyaṁ tadasatsadvā dṛṣṭimekāmupāśritam | anyattvalepakaṁ tasmāddharṣaśokadṛśau kutaḥ || 30 ||

English

Whatever is seen is either unreal or real, depending on the single vision. Anything else is a mere stain. From where, then, come joy and sorrow?

asatyamevāsatyam hi satyam satyam sadeva hi | satyāsatyamasadviddhi tadartham kiṃ nu muhyasi || 31 ||

English

The unreal is indeed unreal, and the real is indeed real. Know the unreal as unreal and the real as real. Why are you confused about this?

asamyagdarśanam tyaktvā samyakpaśya sulocana | na kvacinmuhyati prauḍhaḥ samyagdarśanavāniha || 32 ||

English

Abandon incorrect perception and see correctly, O beautiful-eyed one. The wise one who has correct perception does not get confused anywhere.

dṛśyadarśanasambandhavistāraistadvijṛmbhate | dṛśyadarśanasambandhe yatsukham pāramātmikam || 33 ||

English

The manifestation of the Supreme Self expands through the various relationships between the seer and the seen. The bliss that arises from this relationship is supreme.

anubhūtimayam tasmātsāram brahmeti kathyate | dṛśyadarśanasambandhe sukhasaṃvidanuttamā || 34 ||

English

Therefore, the essence of experience is called Brahman. The supreme bliss of awareness arises from the relationship between the seer and the seen.

dadātyajñāya saṃsāram jñāya mokṣam sadodayam | dṛśyadarśanasambandhasukhamātmavapurviduḥ || 35 ||

English

Ignorance leads to the worldly existence, while knowledge leads to eternal liberation. The wise know that the bliss arising from the relationship between the seer and the seen is the true form of the Self.

tadṛśyavalitaṃ bandhastanmuktaṃ muktirucyate | dṛśyadarśanasambandhasukhasaṃvidanāmayā || 36 ||

English

The bondage is said to be that which is associated with the seen, and liberation is said to be freedom from that.

kṣayātiśayamuktā cet tatmuktiḥ socyate budhaiḥ | dṛśyadarśanasambandhe yānubhūtiḥ svagocarā || 37 ||

English

If one is free from the fluctuations of decay and excess, then that is considered liberation by the wise. The experience of the relationship between the seen and the seer is within one's own realm.

dṛśyadarśananirmuktā tāmālambya bhavābhavaḥ | sauṣuptī dṛṣṭireṣā hi yātyevaṃ saṃprakāśate || 38 ||

English

Free from the seen and the seer, relying on that, existence and non-existence arise. This vision is like deep sleep, and it illuminates in this way.

evaṃ ca yāti turyatvamevaṃ muktiriti smṛtā | dṛśyadarśanamuktāyāṃ yuktāyāṃ parayā dhiyā || 39 ||

English

Thus, one attains the state of the fourth, and this is remembered as liberation. When one is free from the seen and the seer, and is united with the supreme intellect.

dṛśyadarśanasambandhasaṃvidasyāṃ tu rāghava | nātmā sthūlo na caivāṇurna pratyakṣo na cetaraḥ || 40 ||

English

O Raghava, in the awareness of the relationship between the seen and the seer, the self is neither gross, nor subtle, nor perceptible, nor anything else.

na cetano na ca jaḍo na caivāsanna sanmayaḥ | nāhaṃ nānyo na caivaiko nāneko nāpyanekavān || 41 ||

English

It is neither conscious nor inert, neither real nor unreal, neither I nor another, neither one nor many, neither manifold nor non-manifold.

nābhyāśastho na dūrastho naivāsti na ca nāsti ca | na prāpyo nāti cāprāpyo na vā sarvo na sarvagaḥ || 42 ||

English

It is neither near nor far, neither exists nor does not exist, neither attainable nor unattainable, neither all nor omnipresent.

na padārtho nāpadārtho na pañcātmā na pañca ca | yadidaṃ dṛśyatāṃ prāptaṃ manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyāspadam || 43 ||

English

It is neither an object nor a non-object, neither the five elements nor the five senses. Whatever is seen and experienced through the mind and senses is not that.

tadatītaṃ padaṃ yatsyāttanna kimcideveha tat | yathābhūtamidaṃ samyagjñasya saṃpaśyato jagat || 44 ||

English

That which is beyond this state is not anything here. The wise one sees the world as it truly is.

sarvamātmamayaṃ viśvaṃ nāstyānātmamayaṃ kvacit | kāṭhinyadravaṇaspandakhāvakāśāvalokanaiḥ || 45 ||

English

The entire universe is pervaded by the Self. There is nothing anywhere that is not pervaded by the Self. This is realized through the observation of hardness, fluidity, motion, space, and ether.

ātmaiva sarvaṃ sarveṣu bhūvāryanilakhāgniṣu | sattaivāsti na vastūnāṃ yā yā rāma citā vinā | vyatiriktaṃ tato'smīti viddhipronmattajalpitam || 46 ||

English

The Self alone is everything in all beings, in earth, water, air, and fire. Only existence is there, not the objects, O Rama, without consciousness. Know that the idea of 'I am different from that' is the ravings of a madman.

eko jaganti sakalāni samastakālakalpakramāntaragatāni gatāgatāni | ātmaiva netarakalākalanāsti kāciditthaṃmatirbhava tayātigato mahātman || 47 ||

English

The One exists in the entire universe, encompassing all times and cycles. Only the Self exists, there is no other reality. O great soul, have this understanding and be liberated.
