The English and Hindi are machine translations, not yet reviewed by a scholar. How they are madeये कैसे बने
Sri Vasishtha said: the self does not really see any body, as if it were all just play. Yet in time this idea of a body is born within the self itself, the way a false idea of an ugly flaw can rise in the heart of someone who has not actually seen any crookedness in something beautiful.
Because of that, this illusion has come, huge, big bellied, a great power like intoxication, growing out of no more than a drop's taste of wine.
Through this ever changing illusion, which is both a thing and not that thing, this whole world has come into being, like water appearing in a desert because of heat.
The difference between the mind stuff and the ego is only in words, not in fact. What is called the mind stuff is really the ego, and what is called the ego is really the mind.
manohaṃkārayorantardvayorekatarakṣaye kṣīṇe dve eva hi yathā paṭaśauklye paṭakṣaye || 7 ||
Between the mind and the ego, since the two are one at heart, when either one dies out, both die out together, just as, when a white cloth is destroyed, its whiteness is destroyed with it.
Give up the petty idea of being liberated, and also the idea of being bound, and every craving. Through your own dispassion and clear understanding alone, wear away the mind completely.
If within you the thought arises, let me be freed, and the mind gets excited, eager to dwell on this again and again, that alone greatly harms the body.
ātmanyatīte sarvasmātsarvabhūte'thavā tate ko bandhaḥ kaśca vā mokṣo nirmūlaṃ mananaṃ kuru || 10 ||
The self is beyond everything, or else it is spread through every being, so what is bondage, and what is liberation? Root out this very thinking, down to its base.
Consciousness, spreading through everything, subtle, does not move, is not moved by anything, and never stirs on its own, like the mountain of the gods, that even the winds cannot shake.
So what is this delusion, you deluded people, this great cause of suffering for you, the thought I am this, these limbs are mine, this thing is mine, that fills minds of poor understanding?
In this way, through a vision shaken like waves, the eternal self mistaken for something passing, one comes to feel the workings of ignorance, of being a doer, and of being an enjoyer.
There the thought is born, I am this one who comes and goes, who enjoys, who acts, a useless idea, rising out of some unrecognised inner burning, like a craving that is really a mirage.
This ignorance, though it is unreal, drags along the mind, a wild deer thirsty for sense objects, as if it were real, the way a mirage pulls a thirsty deer.
Once you truly know it, one of true nature, it is destroyed and it runs away, just as a chandala's daughter, once she is found out among brahmins, runs away.
Ignorance, once you see it clearly, no longer drags you along, just as a mirage, once it is recognised, no longer pulls a thirsty creature toward it.
paramārthāvabodhena samūlaṃ rāma vāsanā | dīpeneveāndhakāraśrīrgaltiāloka eti ca || 21 ||
Through the understanding of the highest truth, Rama, craving is torn out by the root, as darkness melts away before a lamp, and light takes its place.
When, through the reasoning of the scriptures, the firm certainty arises that there is no such thing as ignorance, ignorance melts away in that very heat, just as a grain of frost melts in heat.
What use are pleasures for the sake of this lifeless body, with this certainty firmly held, the one who knows breaks craving completely, just as a lion breaks out of its cage.
He shines with the highest beauty, like the autumn sky. He cannot be contained even within himself, so vast, like the ocean overflowing at the end of an age.
He becomes free of all turmoil, like a cloud gone silent after its rain. The one who knows rests within himself, calm, like a quiet sea.
He takes on the deepest steadiness, unmoving like Mount Meru. He shines with a clear brightness, like a fire whose fuel has burned down to a quiet glow.
He has walked off the stage of attachment. The fever of pride and restless thought in him has gone quiet. He sits resting in love for his own true self, whole and pure in mind.
The stain of desire's mud has been wiped away from him, and the knot of his own confusion is cut. He is free from the fault and the fear that come from opposites, and he has crossed the ocean of this world.
He has found the highest rest, and he has gained the highest place that others cannot reach. In mind, in action, and in speech, he has arrived at the state from which there is no turning back.
sarvābhivāñchitārambho na kiñcidapi vāñchati | sarvānumoditānando na kiñcidanumodate || 36 ||
He could begin anything that anyone wishes for, yet he himself wishes for nothing. Everyone takes joy in his happiness, yet he himself takes joy in nothing.
na dadāti na cādatte na stauti na ca nindati | nāstameti na codeti na tuṣyati na śocati || 37 ||
He does not give, and he does not take. He does not praise, and he does not blame. He does not set, and he does not rise. He is not pleased, and he does not grieve.
One who has given up every undertaking, who is free from every limiting condition, who has let go of every hope completely — he is known as one who is free while still alive.
Let go of every craving in your mind, and become still — completely, without holding anything back — just as a cloud becomes empty once it has poured out all its rain.
na himādrern na muktābhyo na rambhābhyo na candanāt| na ca candramasaḥ śaityaṃ nairāśyādyadavāpyate || 43 ||
Not from the snow-capped mountains, not from pearls, not from banana trees, not from sandalwood, and not even from the moon comes the coolness that desirelessness gives.
api rājyādapi svargādapi indorapi mādhavāt| api kāntāsamāsaṅgānnai rāśyaṃ paramaṃ sukham || 44 ||
More than a kingdom, more than heaven, more than the moon, more than spring, even more than the embrace of a beloved woman — desirelessness is the highest happiness.
Hold fast to desirelessness. It is the axe that cuts down calamity, the very seat of highest peace, the flower cluster on the tree of tranquility.
For one whose whole being is adorned with desirelessness, Rama, the earth is a cow's hoofprint, Mount Meru a mere post, the directions of space tiny boxes, and the three worlds a blade of grass.
It lies beyond the reach of every danger, and it is itself free of danger — happiness enough, the mind's highest fortune. Hold fast to desirelessness.
Do not hope for anything; you do not belong to hope. Know this world to be a false illusion, arising just as the circle of directions seems to turn when one rides along in a moving chariot.
Why are you confused, mighty-armed one, like a fool, even after being taught — your mind still whirling with thoughts like 'this is mine,' 'that is his,' 'this is he,' 'I am this'?
ātmaivedaṃ jagatsarvaṃ nānāteha na vidyate | ekarūpaṃ jagajjñātvā dhīrairnāma na khidyate || 54 ||
This whole world is nothing but the self; there is no real difference here. Once the wise and steady know the world to be one single reality, they never grieve.
Hold on to that true nature which is free from the contradiction between being and not-being, which stays the same at the beginning and at the end — and settle, on that basis, what all things really are.
From a mind that is heroic in giving things up, this deeply deluding illusion — the very stuff of this world — runs away, just as a doe runs away from a lion.
Pleasures do not delight him within, and troubles do not distress him. Visible splendors do not carry him away, dear one, any more than wind can move a mountain.
Even in a sage who seems drawn to a young woman, if he is a knower with a noble mind, the arrows of desire in his heart crumble to dust, grain by grain.
One who knows his own true nature is not dragged along helplessly by attraction and aversion. Not even a tremor stirs in him because of these two — how then could they ever overpower him?
He looks at a swaying creeper and a restless woman with the same eye, and his nature is like a rock on a mountain. He takes no delight in pleasures, as a traveler takes no delight in the desert sand.
The wise man, whose mind is unattached to anything, enjoys with ease everything that comes to him without effort. He enjoys the whole weight of pleasure the way the eye takes in light.
kākatālīyavatprāptā bhogālī lalanādikā | svāditāpyaṅga dhīrasya na duḥkhāya na tuṣṭaye || 64 ||
Enjoyments, women included, come to him by chance, like a crow landing just as a palm fruit falls. Friend, even when tasted, they bring the steady man neither sorrow nor delight.
samyagdṛṣṭapathaṃ tajjñaṃ sukhaduḥkhama tī manāk | dve vīcyāviva śailendraṃ kṣobhaṃ netuṃ na śaknutḥ || 65 ||
Pleasure and pain cannot stir, even a little, the man who has rightly seen the path and known the truth, just as two waves cannot shake a great mountain.
He looks upon pleasures with indifference. He is gentle, self-controlled, free of inner restlessness. He rests on his own true state, which lives within every being.
The knower remains free of restlessness, even while he is caught up in restless activity. Even while bringing the worlds into being, he is Brahman itself, absorbed only in his own self.
When pleasure and pain come to him, each in its own time, its own place, its own order, he is not disturbed, like a mountain standing firm through the seasons.
Rama, the man of great wisdom seems immersed in the movements of his hands, feet, and senses, but because his mind is always unattached, nothing in him truly sinks.
Gold is called tarnished only when it carries a real inner stain, not otherwise. In the same way, a creature is called attached only when there is a real attachment of feeling within it, not otherwise.
sakṛtprabhātaṃ vimalaṃ yajjñātaṃ jñātameva tat | nahi bandhuḥ parijñātaḥ punarajñātatāṃ vrajet || 72 ||
What has once dawned clear stays known; known once, it stays known forever. Someone once fully recognized as one's own does not become a stranger again.
Once the illusion of a snake is gone, the thought of a snake in the rope does not come back, just as a monsoon river, once it has run down from the mountain slope, does not flow back again.
na hema tāpaśuddhāṅgaṃ svabhāvamalamāgatam | kardame magnampi satsamādatte malaṃ punaḥ || 74 ||
Gold whose base impurity has been burned away by fire, and which has come fully into its own true nature, does not turn stained again even when it sinks into mud.
Once the knot of the heart is undone, the strands of nature can never bind him again. However hard anyone tries, who can tie a fruit back onto its branch once it has fallen?
Once ignorance has been fully understood, who sinks into it again? Once a Brahmin has learned what the outcastes do, would he care to go and watch them?
Just as, on clear water, the thought that it is milk goes away on close examination, so the deep habit of clinging to the world goes away, in the same way, through close examination by the mind.
yathā maṣīkusumbhādi striyāścitre tathaiva hi| jīvatyā api keśoṣṭhaṃ kastāṃ pari kila grahaḥ || 81 ||
Just as the hair and lips of a woman in a painting are only ink and red dye, the hair and lips of a living woman are exactly the same. What, then, is there to be so taken with?
Jaggery once tasted as sweet cannot be made otherwise by burning it or cutting it up; so too the direct sight of one's own true nature, once known, cannot be undone.
What could make the mind of the great soul who knows the truth forget the light of consciousness and bliss it rests on, the same bliss that runs through the whole world alike?
She keeps up her unbroken round of household dealings, full of every pleasure and pain, bound to her family's will, worn down by her husband and father-in-law.
Yet, because of the lover she holds in her own mind, that same woman, lost in her secret passion, grows languid with joy, and is not troubled by her many sorrows.
In the same way, the man whose ignorance has melted away, though fully caught up in worldly affairs, being of right vision and good conduct, finds joy within, in his own inmost self.
chidyate na nikṛttāṅgo galadaśrurna roditi | dahyate na pradagdho'pi naṣṭo'pi na vinaśyati || 90 ||
Though his limb is cut off, he is not cut; though his tears flow, he does not weep; though he is burned, he is not burned; though destroyed, he does not perish.
Untouched by the rise of pleasure and pain, unshaken even amid harsh blows of fate, let him live joyfully, whether in a house, or in the finest of cities, on a vast mountain, in a wild forest, or in a hermitage.
