śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yāvatturyaparāmarśastāvatkevalatāpadam | jīvanmuktasya viṣayo vacasāṃ ca raghūdvaha || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: As long as there is reflection on the fourth state, there is the state of absolute solitude. The realm of the liberated while living and of words, O Raghunatha.

ata ūrdhvamadehānāṃ muktānāṃ vacasā tathā | viṣayo na mahābāho puruṣāṇāmivāmbaram || 2 ||

English

Therefore, beyond this, for the liberated who are bodiless, and for words, there is no realm, O mighty-armed one, like the sky for embodied beings.

sā hi viśrāntipadavī dūrebhyo'pi davīyasī | gamyā videhamuktānāṃ khalekheva nabhasvatām || 3 ||

English

That indeed is the abode of rest, more distant even than the distant, attainable by the bodiless liberated ones, like the sky for the clouds.

suṣuptāvasthayā kañcitkālaṃ bhuktvā jagatsthitim | turyatāmeti tadanu paramānandaghūrṇitaḥ || 4 ||

English

Having experienced the state of deep sleep for some time, and then the worldly existence, one attains the fourth state, being intoxicated with supreme bliss.

turyātītadaśāṃ tajjñā yathā yāntyātmakovidāḥ | tathādhigaccha nirdvandvaṃ padaṃ raghukulodvaha || 5 ||

English

Knowers of the self reach the state beyond the fourth, as they know that. Therefore, attain the state free from duality, O Raghunatha.

English

O Rama, be engaged in worldly activities as if in deep sleep | Like the moon and the stars, you have no decay or anxiety

śarīrasaṃniveśasya kṣaye sthairye ca saṃvidaḥ | mā gṛhāṇa bhramo hyeṣa śarīramiti jṛmbhate || 7 ||

English

Do not be deluded by the decay and stability of the body's condition | This is indeed an illusion, it yawns as the body

dehanāśena ko'rthaste ko'rthaste dehasaṃsthayā | bhava tvaṃ prakṛtārambhastiṣṭhatveṣa yathāsthitam || 8 ||

English

What is the purpose of the destruction of the body? What is the purpose of the body's existence? Be in your natural state, remain as you are

jñātavānasi tatsatyaṃ buddhvānasi tatpadam | prāptavānasi rūpaṃ svaṃ viśoko bhava bhūtaye || 9 ||

English

You have known that truth, you have understood that state | You have attained your own form, be free from sorrow for the welfare of all beings

īpsitānīpsitaṃ tyaktvā śītalālokaśobhayā | andhakārāttathāmbhodānmuktaṃ khamiva śobhate || 10 ||

English

Giving up the desirable and the undesirable, with the cool brilliance of the world | Like the sky freed from darkness and clouds, it shines

manastavātmasaṃpannaṃ nādhaḥ samanudhāvati | yogamantratapaḥsiddhaḥ puruṣaḥ khādivāvanim || 11 ||

English

The mind, endowed with the Self, does not descend to lower realms. The person who is accomplished in yoga, mantra, and austerities is like space in the sky.

iha śuddhā cidevāsti pārāvāravivarjitā | ayaṃ so'hamidaṃ tanma iti te māstu vibhramaḥ || 12 ||

English

Here, only pure consciousness exists, devoid of any distinctions. May there be no confusion in understanding 'I am this, that is mine.'

ātmeti vyavahārārthamabhidhā kalpitā vibhoḥ | nāmarūpādibhedastu dūramasmādalam gataḥ || 13 ||

English

The term 'Self' is designated for practical purposes. The distinctions of name and form are far removed from this.

jalameva yathāmbhodhirna taraṅgādikaṃ pṛthak | ātmaivedaṃ tathā sarvaṃ na bhūtoyādikaṃ pṛthak || 14 ||

English

Just as the ocean is only water, not separate from its waves, so too is everything only the Self, not separate from its manifestations.

yathā samastājjaladhau jalādanyannna labhyate | tathaiva jagataḥ sphārādātmano'nyannna labhyate || 15 ||

English

Just as nothing other than water is found in the entire ocean, so too nothing other than the Self is found in the entire universe.

English

O wise one, where do you establish the notion 'I am this'? What is that reality? What is yours and what is not yours?

na dvitvamasti no dehāḥ saṃbandho na ca taiḥ sthitaḥ| saṃbhāvyate kalaṅko vā bhānoriva tamaḥpaṭaiḥ || 17 ||

English

There is no duality, nor are there bodies, nor is there any connection with them. Just as darkness is not perceived in the presence of light, so too, there is no blemish.

dvitvamabhyupagamyāpi kathayāmi tavārihan| dehādibhiḥ sadbhirapi na saṃbandho vibhorbhavet || 18 ||

English

Even if duality is accepted, I tell you, O enemy of Ari, there is no connection with the body and other entities, even if they exist.

chāyātapaprasarayoḥ prakāśatamasoryathā| na saṃbhavati saṃbandhas tathā vai dehadehinoḥ || 19 ||

English

Just as there is no connection between shadow and light, similarly, there is no connection between the body and the self.

yathā śītoṣṇayornityaṃ parasparaviruddhayoḥ| na saṃbhavati saṃbandho rāma dehātmanostathā || 20 ||

English

Just as there is no connection between the eternally opposing cold and heat, O Rama, similarly, there is no connection between the body and the self.

avinābhāvino ryastu saṃbandhaḥ kathametayoḥ| jaḍacetanayordehadēhinoranubhūyatē || 21 ||

English

How is the relationship between the inseparable body and the self, which are insentient and sentient, experienced?

cinmātrasya ātmano dēhasaṃbandha iti yā kathā| saiṣā duravabōdhārthā dāvāgnau jaladhiryathā || 22 ||

English

The story of the self, which is pure consciousness, having a connection with the body is difficult to comprehend, like the ocean in a forest fire.

satyāvalōkanēnēṣā mithyādṛṣṭirvinaśyati| avalōkanayā sāmyamātapē jaladhiryathā || 23 ||

English

By the true perception, this false view is destroyed, just as the illusion of water in the sun's heat is destroyed by observation.

cidātmā nirmalo nityaḥ svāvabhāso nirāmayaḥ| dēhas tv anityo malavānstēna saṃbadhyatē katham || 24 ||

English

The self, which is pure consciousness, is pure, eternal, self-luminous, and free from defects. How can the body, which is impure and transient, be connected to it?

spandamāyāti vātēna bhūtairvā pīvarīkṛtaḥ| dēhas tēna na saṃbandhaḥ manāgēva sahātmanā || 25 ||

English

The body moves due to wind or is made robust by the elements. Therefore, it has no real connection with the self.

siddhe dvitve'pi dehasya na saṃbandhasya saṃbhavaḥdvitvāsiddhau tu sumate kalanaivedṛśī kutaḥ || 26 ||

English

Even if the duality of the body is established, there is no occurrence of connection. But in the absence of duality, O wise one, how can there be such a perception?

sarvamātmamayaṃ śāntamityevaṃ pratyayaṃ sphuṭamsabāhyābhyantaraṃ rāma sarvatra dṛḍhatāṃ naya || 28 ||

English

Everything is pervaded by the peaceful self. Thus, firmly establish this clear conviction everywhere, both externally and internally, O Rama.

sukhī duḥkhī vimūḍho'smītyetā durdṛṣṭayaḥ smṛtāḥāsu cedvastubuddhiste tacciraṃ duḥkhamicchasi || 29 ||

English

The thoughts 'I am happy,' 'I am unhappy,' 'I am confused' are considered bad omens. If you have such materialistic thoughts, you will desire suffering for a long time.

yaḥ kramaḥ śailatṛṇayoḥ kauśeyopalayostathāsāmyaṃ prati sa evoktaḥ paramātmaśarīrayoḥ || 30 ||

English

The relationship between the supreme self and the body is like that between a mountain and a blade of grass, or between silk and a stone.

yathā tejastimirayorna saṃbandho na tulyatāatyantabhinnayo rāma tathaivātmaśarīrayoḥ || 31 ||

English

Just as there is no relationship between light and darkness, nor are they identical or completely different, O Rama, so too is the relationship between the self and the body.

yathā śītoṣṇayoraiakyaṃ kathāsvapi na dṛśyate | jaḍaprakāśayoḥ śleṣo na tathātmaśarīrayoḥ || 32 ||

English

Just as the unity of cold and heat is not seen even in stories, the union of the inert and the luminous is not so with the self and the body.

dehaścalati vātena tenaivāyāti gacchati | śabdaṃ karoti vātena dehanāḍīvilāsinā || 33 ||

English

The body moves due to the wind (vata), and by the same wind, it comes and goes. It produces sound through the wind that moves in the body's channels.

śabdaḥ kacaṭataprāyaḥ sphuratyantaḥ samīraṇaiḥ | yathā prajāyate vaṃśādddeharandhrāttathaiva hi || 34 ||

English

Sound, which is predominantly kacaṭata, manifests internally through the winds. Just as it is born from a flute, so too it arises from the body's orifices.

kanīnikāparispandaścakṣuḥspandasya mārutāt | indriyasphuraṇātsaiva saṃvitkevalamātmanaḥ || 35 ||

English

The blinking of the eyelids is due to the wind, and the movement of the eyes is also due to the wind. From the pulsation of the senses, there is only the awareness of the self.

ākāśopalakuḍyādau sarvatrātmadaśā sthitā | pratibimbamivādarśe citta evātra dṛśyate || 36 ||

English

In the sky, stones, and walls, the state of the self is present everywhere. Like a reflection in a mirror, only the mind is seen here.

śarīrālayamutsṛjya yatra cittavihangamaḥ | svavāsanāvaśādyāti tatraivātmānubhūyate || 37 ||

English

Leaving the abode of the body, the mind-bird goes wherever it is led by its own tendencies, and there it experiences the self.

yatra puṣpaṃ tatra gandhasaṃvidaḥ saṃsthitā yathā | yatra cittaṃ hi tatrātmasaṃvidaḥ saṃsthitāstathā || 38 ||

English

Just as the fragrance is present wherever there is a flower, similarly, the awareness of the self is present wherever the mind is.

sarvatra sthitamākāśamādarśe pratibimbiti | yathā tathātmā sarvatra sthitaścetasi dṛśyate || 39 ||

English

Just as the sky, which is present everywhere, is reflected in a mirror, similarly, the self, which is present everywhere, is seen in the mind.

apāmavanataṃ sthānamāspadaṃ bhūtale yathā | antaḥkaraṇamevātmasaṃvidāmāspadaṃ tathā || 40 ||

English

Just as water finds its place on the earth, similarly, the mind is the abode of the awareness of the self.

satyāsatyam jagadrūpamantaḥkaraṇabimbitā | ātmasaṃvittanotīdamālokamiva sūryabhā || 41 ||

English

The world, which is a mixture of truth and untruth, is reflected in the mind. The awareness of the self illuminates this like the light of the sun.

antaḥkaraṇamevātaḥ kāraṇaṃ bhūtasaṃsṛtau ātmā sarvātigatvāttu kāraṇaṃ sadakāraṇam || 42 ||

English

The inner mind is the cause of the cycle of existence. The self, being beyond all, is the cause of the true cause.

avicāraṇamajñānaṃ maurkhyamāhurmahādhiyaḥ saṃsārasaṃsṛtau sāramantaḥkaraṇakāraṇam || 43 ||

English

Lack of discernment is ignorance, and the wise call it foolishness. The essence of the cycle of existence is the cause of the inner mind.

asamyakprekṣaṇānmohāc cetḥsattāṃ gṛhītavat saṃmohabījakaṇikāṃ tamo'rkādiva dṛśyate || 44 ||

English

Due to improper vision and delusion, one grasps the reality of the mind. The seed of delusion appears like darkness before the sun.

yathā bhūtātmatattvaikaparijñānena rāghava asattāmetyalam cetḥ dīpeneva tamaḥ kṣaṇāt || 45 ||

English

O Raghava, just as by the knowledge of the single truth of the self and the elements, the mind attains non-existence like darkness vanishes instantly with a lamp.

saṃsārakāraṇamitaḥ svayaṃ cetḥ vichārayet jīvo'ntaḥkaraṇaṃ cittaṃ manaścetyādināmakam || 46 ||

English

One should reflect on the cause of the world oneself. The living being, the inner mind, the consciousness, and the mind are known by various names.

śrīrāma uvāca | etāḥ saṃjñāḥ prabho brahmaṃścetaso rūḍhimāgatāḥ | kathamityeva kathaya mayi mānada siddhaye || 47 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Lord, these designations have entered the mind. Please explain to me, O respectful one, how they can be accomplished.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sarve bhāvā ime nityamātmatatvaikarūpiṇaḥ | cittāttarangakagaṇā jalaikakalitā yathā || 48 ||

English

Vasistha said: All these states are eternally of the nature of the one self. They are like the waves of the mind, merged in the one water.

ātmā spandaiakarūpātmā sthitasteṣu kvacitkvacit | taraṅgeṣu viloleṣu payodheḥ salilaṃ yathā || 49 ||

English

The self, which is of the nature of vibration, is sometimes situated in these (states). Like the water in the wavering waves of the ocean.

kvacidaspandarūpātmā sthitasteṣu maheśvaraḥ | taraṅgatvamayāteṣu jalabhāvo jaleṣviva || 50 ||

English

Sometimes the self, which is of the nature of non-vibration, is situated in these (states), like the water nature in the waves that have ceased to be waves.

tatropalādayo bhāvā alolāḥ svātmani sthitāḥ | surāphenavadutspandā lolāstu puruṣādayaḥ || 51 ||

English

There, states like stones are unmoving, situated in their own self. Like the foam of wine, the vibrating ones are moving, such as humans.

tatra teṣu śarīreṣu sarvaśaktistadātmanaḥ| kalitā'jñānakalanā tenājñānamasau sthitaḥ || 52 ||

English

In those bodies, all the powers of the Self are mixed with the vibrations of ignorance, and thus ignorance resides there.

tadajñānamanantātmabhūṣitaṃ jīva ucyate| sa saṃsāre mahāmohamāyāpañjarakuñjaraḥ || 53 ||

English

That ignorance, adorned with the infinite Self, is called the individual soul (jīva). It is like an elephant in the cage of the great delusion of the worldly existence.

jīvanājjīva ityukto'haṃbhāvaḥ syāttvahaṃtayā| buddhirniścāyakatvena saṃkalpakalanānmanaḥ || 54 ||

English

The individual soul is called 'jīva' because it has the sense of 'I' (ahaṃbhāva). This sense of 'I' arises from the ego (ahaṃtā). The intellect (buddhi) decides, and the mind (manaḥ) forms resolutions and calculations.

prakṛtiḥ prakṛtitvena deho digdhatayā sthitaḥ| jaḍaḥ prakṛtibhāvena cetanaḥ svātmasattayā || 55 ||

English

Nature (prakṛti) exists as nature. The body is situated as stained. The inert (jaḍa) exists due to the nature of matter, and the conscious (cetana) exists due to the reality of the Self.

jaḍājaḍadṛśormadhyaṃ yattattvaṃ pāramātmikam| tadetadeva nānātvaṃ nānāsaṃjñābhirātatam || 56 ||

English

The essence that is between the inert (jaḍa) and the conscious (ajaḍa) is the supreme reality (pāramātmika). This very diversity is pervaded by various names.

evaṃ svarūpaṃ jīvasya bṛhadāraṇyakādiṣu | bahudhā bahuṣu proktaṃ vedānteṣu kilānagha || 57 ||

English

Thus, the nature of the individual soul is described in various ways in the Vedanta texts such as the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, O sinless one.

ajñais tv etāsu saṃjñāsu kuvikalpakutārkikaiḥ | mohāya kevalaṃ mūḍhair vyartham āsthāḥ prakalpitāḥ || 58 ||

English

These designations are merely imagined by the ignorant, who are deluded by false arguments and logic, for the sake of delusion alone, O foolish ones.

evam eṣa mahābāho jīvaḥ saṃsārakāraṇam | mūkenātivarākeṇa dehakena iha kiṃ kṛtam || 59 ||

English

Thus, O mighty-armed one, the individual soul is the cause of the worldly existence. What has been done here with this mute and very brilliant body?

ādhārādheyayorekanāśe nānyasya naṣṭatā | yathā tathā śarīrādināśe nātmani naṣṭatā || 60 ||

English

Just as the destruction of one does not imply the destruction of the other in the case of the support and the supported, similarly, the destruction of the body and other elements does not imply the destruction of the self.

ekaparṇarase kṣīṇe raso naiti yathā kṣayam | yāti parṇarasaścārkararśmijālāntare yathā || 61 ||

English

Just as the essence of a single leaf does not perish when it withers, but merges into the network of sun rays, similarly, the essence of the individual does not perish but merges into the divine.

śarīrasaṃkṣaye dehī na kṣayaṃ yāti kasyacitnirvāsanaścettadvyomni tiṣṭhatyātmapade tathā || 62 ||

English

In the destruction of the body, the embodied soul does not perish. If the dwelling is destroyed, it remains in the sky, in the state of the self.

dehanāśe vinaṣṭo'smītyevaṃ yasyā'materbhramaḥmātuḥ stanataṭāttasya manye vetāla utthitaḥ || 63 ||

English

One who thinks, 'I am destroyed with the destruction of the body,' is deluded. I believe a ghost has arisen from his mother's breast.

yasya hyātyantiko nāśaḥ syādasāvuditaḥ smṛtaḥcittanāśo hi nāśaḥ syātsa mokṣa iti kathyate || 64 ||

English

One whose ultimate destruction is said to be non-existent, that destruction of the mind is said to be liberation.

mṛto naṣṭa iti prokto manye tacca mṛṣā hyasatsa deśakālāntarito bhūtvā bhūtvānubhūyate || 65 ||

English

One who is said to be dead and destroyed, I believe that is false. Having become different in place and time, it is experienced.

ihohyante janairevaṃ taraṅgāntastṛṇairivamaraṇavyapadeśāsu deśakālatirohitaiḥ || 66 ||

English

People are carried away like waves by the grass of death, hidden by place and time.

vāsanāvasthito jīvo yātyutsṛjya śarīrakamkapirvanataruṃ tyaktvā tarvantaramivāsthitaḥ || 67 ||

English

The soul, situated in desires, leaves the body and, like a monkey leaving one tree, takes hold of another.

punastadapi saṃtyajya gacchatyanyadapi kṣaṇātanyasminvitate deśe kāle'nyasmiṃśca rāghava || 68 ||

English

Again, leaving that, it goes to another in an instant, situated in another place and time, O Raghava.

itaścetaśca nīyante jīvā vāsanayā svayāciraṃ tadapijīvinyā dhūrtyā dhātryaiva bālakāḥ || 69 ||

English

Here and there, souls are carried away by their own desires, like children by a deceitful nurse.

vāsanārajjuvalitā jīrṇāḥ parvatakukṣiṣujarayantyatiduḥkhena jīvitaṃ jīvajīvikāḥ || 70 ||

jaraṭhajaradupoḍhaduḥkhabhārāḥ pariṇatijarjarajīvitāśca satyaḥhṛdayajanitavāsanānuvṛttyā narakabhare janatāściraṃ patanti || 71 ||

English

Those who are burdened with the sorrows of old age and decrepit bodies, and whose lives are worn out, fall into the endless hell due to their attachment to the desires arising from their hearts.

śrīvālmīkiruvācaityuktavatyatha munau divaso jagāma sāyaṃtanāya vidhaye'stamino jagāmasnātuṃ sabhā kṛtanamaskaraṇā jagāma śyāmākṣaye ravikaraiśca sahājagāma || 72 ||

English

Sri Valmiki said, 'After speaking thus, the sage went to perform his evening rituals. He went to the river to bathe, and the assembly, having paid their respects, also went with the rays of the setting sun.'
